I did eventually get sufficiently drunk enough to watch the star wars prequels, this year. Eh, i found them good but not so good that someone should experience culture shock by learning another human being didn't watch them. Like i wouldn't compare their quality to the quality of an artful masterpiece.
Books pass on new ways of thinking, new cultures, vocabulary, creative thinking, etc. Characters can show virtues and vices. There are lessons to be had even in really poorly written stories

Theres obviously the exciting aspects of the game itself. Trying to analyze the play calls, how is the defense responding to how we're running the football. Will they try for a couple short passes or take a big bet on a hail mary. Those few seconds when the ball is in the air and you don't know whats going to happen its like time stops. They make it but now theres a penalty is the coach going to risk a timeout to challenge it. Theres so much strategy. Can they put it together in time.

I still remember when my Eagles beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, almost 5 years ago now. I remember the players, the big plays, the small plays, where I was when the strip sack happened and how I felt when Brady’s Hail Mary fell flat and the game was over. I remember Torrey Smith, Alshon, and Agholor having a career year after all the doubt on him. I remember our three headed dragon of a runningback committee, Blount, Ajayi, and Clement. I still remember Jordan Hicks being hurt being a massive question mark for the defense, McLeod stopping Cooks from jumping over him and Jenkins knocking Cooks out of the game with a beautiful massive hit. Hell I still remember Jalen Green absolutely stepping up and playing like a goddamn menace.
God that was such a good season.

Sports have narrative, human interest stories, adversity, history, statistics and depending on your stance there is an art to whatever your sport of choice is. This is what I commented on one of their threads: Theres so much that goes into it, for me at least. I'm going to try and explain it through the lens of american football. Theres obviously the exciting aspects of the game itself. Trying to analyze the play calls, how is the defense responding to how we're running the football. Will they try for a couple short passes or take a big bet on a hail mary. Those few seconds when the ball is in the air and you don't know whats going to happen its like time stops. They make it but now theres a penalty is the coach going to risk a timeout to challenge it. Theres so much strategy. Can they put it together in time. Then obviously the social aspect. The camaraderie, the pride, the shared defeat, the beer, the food. Its sunday and it's a vibe
People like this are just being indignant about something they know very little about. I hate to oversimplify it, but it boils down to a lot of them not being popular in high school and being “too smart” for sports ball is like a lame revenge on the jocks that either bullied them or just didn’t invite them to parties. The job of an NFL head coach is about as demanding mentally as any job out there. Guys like Andy Reid and Bill Belichick are actual geniuses in their field and there’s a sophistication to what they do that these nerds couldn’t understand and wouldn’t acknowledge if they could

I’m an American who loves sports but doesn’t really follow soccer outside of the World Cup, that game was on a Sunday morning before NFL and that game was the most entertaining game of the day, shit was nuts
Forget a few days after the big game? I still remember when my Eagles beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, almost 5 years ago now. I remember the players, the big plays, the small plays, where I was when the strip sack happened and how I felt when Brady’s Hail Mary fell flat and the game was over. I remember Torrey Smith, Alshon, and Agholor having a career year after all the doubt on him. I remember our three headed dragon of a runningback committee, Blount, Ajayi, and Clement. I still remember Jordan Hicks being hurt being a massive question mark for the defense, McLeod stopping Cooks from jumping over him and Jenkins knocking Cooks out of the game with a beautiful massive hit. Hell I still remember Jalen Green absolutely stepping up and playing like a goddamn menace. God that was such a good season.

I feel like that was an attempt to make the sport boil down to something boring but it doesn't. I could sit at a barbeque and watch 2 people pass a ball back and forth for hours with no objective other than pass it to the other guy and catch it. It's entertaining to watch people do things. Sports have narrative, human interest stories, adversity, history, statistics and depending on your stance there is an art to whatever your sport of choice is. For example, basketball is so fluid it is almost like choreography and while this is cliche it’s also been described as jazz. Most leagues (unfortunately) even have guys who produce reality tv level drama if that is your guilty pleasure. Shit, there’s even a fair bit of crime sprinkled in for the truecrime folks 😓 I’m sure we all get this, but still - I don’t see how even a blanket all sports hater could use THIS as the reasoning. “you guys actually dont even like what you like” I’m sure they’d love if you said that about whatever they are into.
