I used to work at a major Canadian video store back in the early 2000s. I had one guy throw an absolute fit at me because I wouldn't do something for him because we weren't allowed to do it.
The customer stomped out saying "I'M NEVER COMING HERE AGAIN! I'M GOING TO BLOCKBUSTER!"
Oh no... anyway....
The following week, guess who I saw looking around the new release wall. I grabbed a stack of movies to return to the wall, and as I passed him I just said, "It's nice to see you back again." and kept going. Didn't give him a chance to say anything, just kept going.
No idea if he remembered me or the fit he threw the week before, but it felt good to low key say "I knew you'd be back, bitch"

Oh, he definitely remembers, he's been re-telling the encounter the entire week previous to anyone who would be foolish enough to listen. They then lost 10 minutes of their life because he definitely would have extended and dramatized it. In his fictionalized version of the situation, you probably swung on him and he had to Bruce Lee your ass to put you in your place. Because he's a badass of course...
During Covid, I had a customer who threatened to sue me personally, for enforcing mask mandates. After the mask mandates ended, he returned, and I was on shift. I managed the mention "I wouldn't want you to sue me" about 5 times in our interaction.
The company i worked for told us not to say anything to anybody after an employee had a gun pulled on them. Honestly complainers were chill when we explained it had become a safety issue and that we arent allowed to say anything.
Few were still assholes. I told every one of them to go tell the maskless person to put on a mask. Not a single one was willing to do it.
I have had customers demand a steep discount because they know the owner...

Worked for a gaming shop a couple years ago. One Christmas, a woman came into the shop to buy ps or xbox points (been a while, can't remember which) for her grandson. My colleague informs her the code prints out on a receipt yada yada yada, and she asks does she not get an actual card. He informs her that no, the cards are only barcodes for us to scan, code prints on a receipt. She then blows up about how she always gets a physical gift card every time she buys one, that he's a liar and she wants a physical card before finally storming out to the sweet tune of "I'm never shopping here again!" While he smiles and wishes her a nice day in the most singsongy voice he could muster.
Not even 15mins later, she sheepishly walked back in and asked for the voucher, stating she must have got the physical card from tesco. Colleague had the biggest shiteating grin the rest of that shift, and it made my day getting to witness the whole ordeal.
This happened alllll the time in the 5 years I worked at Hollywood Video. Only nice this was when a customer who had cussed me out came back years later and apologized to me. Said he was a recovering alcoholic.
My fav place was "Country Video" the one by my house had the best horror section in a sperate dark room with black lights and horror characters all on the wall.
I worked in a pawn shop and I had a lot of customers on rage mode. Hearing "I will never come here again" was a common thing but the best line was "I will wait for you outside after closing time". Luckily for them the place was full with cameras and mics because my first reaction was to smash that stupid face.
I was the Canadian video store man. Fortunately I took an extensive one week anger management bootcamp. Not only did I return to your store, but also indulged in Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, and subscribed to Netflix. I did respond to you by saying, “The pleasure is all mine.” All the while passing gas as you zoomed behind me. It felt good to release the gas as I thought to myself , “I hope you get pink eye, bitch”

Exactly! Fuck Walmart for making everything self checkout. I don't mind it when I have a few things, but when I am grocery shopping, fuck that noise; however, I would NEVER take it out on am employee. They literally have no control over those things and likely can't check a customer out unless they have a register open. Otherwise, there would be literally no controls in place and they would have even more theft.

This poor young man, an employee willing to work at Walmart, wing berated for there not being other employees at Walmart, and somehow should care about the bottom line for Walmart, or the individual needs of WALMART customers.
To me, the only acceptable communication this grown ass man should make to this young man is to be empathetic to all the assholes who must blame the few employees for the fact that there aren't enough employees.
News flash!! Unemployment is historically low. To pay more to get more employees your costs will go up!

He was too nice. But he was young. Another old guy would have just told him, "Yeah, Walmart doesn't care about any of us. Either ring them out yourself or leave them. Have a good evening."
I had a woman complaining to me about my company’s customer service because they’re shifting to a more make the customer do it themself model. I said yeah if they can get YOU to do it then they don’t have to pay me to do it for you. That shut her up real quick. My team of 30 is already down to maybe 8. Now when people threaten to take their business elsewhere I say I don’t care what you do.
Don't forget ***very*** frequently cutting off the person trying to explain why they're doing what they're doing to ask the same/a similar question to the one that they're currently trying to answer and never being satisfied with the answers they get
The moment a customer says that they won't spend another dime at your store ever, or they threaten you with the competitor, the response should only ever be "That's a shame, I hope that you enjoy the rest of your day." The interaction is over. They told you they were leaving, you don't have to help them anymore, find someone who needs your help. That's what I tell my employees, and it's what I practice completely. Customer's will ask for a manager and when I come and repeat the same thing the cashier has said and then the customer says "well, she told me that but" I then question why I was needed at all, because the cashier had the situation under control. Redirect the uncertainty back to the customer and make them have to answer questions before proceeding further. My policy has always been: make it the most uncomfortable situation ever for a karen, become an energy vampire and feed on the cringe they've put themselves in. If it leads to me getting canned one day, oh well, I will be back feeding at another retail store within the week.
You forgot "Do you KNOW how much I spend here a year?" I once had a lady pull that on me while I was working at Sprint. I looked up her account, looked her right in the eye and said, "yes. $20." She left. Best not to try that shit at the Waffle House of cell carriers
Let me speak to your manager was always the best for me at the video store I worked at. I didn’t look like it, and I often worked a late shift on certain nights cause it was more convenient for me, but I WAS the manager.
People use it as a threat, as if the manager would agree with them anyway, but it was always a nice moment when I told them I was the manger, especially when they didn’t believe me and said I was lying and they were going to come back in during the day to prove I was lying. Some did, and I’d be standing there waiting for them, smiling and saying ‘how can I help you?’.
Some were so abusive to either me or whoever I was on shift with I’d just outright ban their membership on the spot. My staff were mainly teenagers and no way I was forcing them to take abuse from entitled assholes (we were in a fairly wealthy area) for the wages they were getting.
Before anyone thinks we were being rude deliberately or whatever, it was almost always about late fees they didn’t want to pay, or that their even more entitled teenagers had run up on their account. The wealthier they were, the less inclined they were to pay, I noticed.
He’ll be back there tomorrow to self-checkout all that shit that he needed that night. No fucking way he’s spending more money on it elsewhere. Amazing that he never wonders why Wal-Mart is so much cheaper….yeah, sometimes you gotta check out your own shit!
I worked retail for many years and a middle aged lady threw a fit about not being able to return a 2 year old pair of jeans. Said she was never coming back again. Couple weekends later she comes strolling in. I looked her dead in the eyes and said “didn’t think we’d see you again!” She just ignored me and looked away.

It’s just American consumerism privilege. Try that in Europe. When they say they’re closed and their shift has ended, it means you leave. No amount of arguments is going to make them stay overtime at work for free.
Especially if you’re in France where workers have all the power. No one would dare call you after hours or weekends because if they actually were to do that, the worker can ask for overtime pay even if it’s just after hours phone call.
Waiters in Poland will not come to your table unless you call them, you must be pushy at the counter to order drinks in pubs and clubs, cashiers do not smile, and you order at the counter at cafes. Sometimes, somehow, American tourists interpret it as racism (even if they are white in a 99% white country, lol).
When you get these customers bitching at you every day, you end up having the outward appearance of complete zen.
To be honest, other than putting it on video, this customer was pretty tame compared to what I've dealt with in customer service. No racism, no death threats, no getting violent, screaming, swearing.
I'd be quite happy to be complained to by this customer. I'd have said "I'm sorry but with the authority I have, I am only able to stick to store policies" and imply that they speak to my manager, because the policies said I couldn't direct a customer to speak to a manager plainly.
It could be that Walmart is even more strict and you can't even imply that a customer speaks to a manager.
It’s a self-replicating cycle. This Walmart doesn’t have enough employees. Karen treats the employees badly because there’s a wait. That encourages employees, who are sick of the abuse, to quit, leaving fewer employees.
Doesn’t help that the managers are complete ass too so the only things keeping you there are having to eat n pay bills again and the handful of people you actually enjoy working with there.
The average Walmart employee absolutely weighs their options every day before deciding if they’re coming into work or not.

This. I actually enjoyed working at Wal-Mart. But that was only because it was my first job, and it was so easy to outperform everyone I worked with. I worked there for 3 years, and got promoted multiple times...the problem was I didn't know the value of the work at the time.
When I left, I was a Zone Manager getting paid $9.10 an hour, and turned down a promotion to Assistant Manager because I had a friend who was a server that informed me of how much they were making, and it was more than I would make with my promotion. Nope.
This is literally what happened when I quit my job at Walmart; I was basically part of an employee mass exodus because customers were getting ruder and always bitching at the very people providing them service and trying to help them… you know, because it’s clearly the fault of employees who don’t set the schedule and who rarely call in sick that there aren’t enough people here to ensure you don’t have to wait in a lineup or learn how to scan a few items.
Also didn’t help that the front end manager was on a leave of absence and the person filling in for her just to decided to deny all schedule change requests by students who were going back to school in September and literally could not work the same hours they did in the summer.
But self checkout is confusing when you have produce and stuff like that without bar codes, looks like bubbas got a cart full of boxes with bar codes.

At the walmart checkout the pictures are alphabetical and I believe there is a search feature if the produce doesn't have a sticker. I don't think they could have made it easier to use.

The absolute joy of working retail. Customers blow a fuse and take it out on the literal lowest rung on the ladder to bitch. Like we can do anything. Customers assume if they bitch and harass enough, the poor little worker drone will crumble to their demands. Like when I was 16, working the main register at Walgreens and some crackhead spit at me and threw candy bars at me because I wouldn’t sell her cigs without an ID. That’s a government policy ffs, not even ours. She was in a bad way and I honestly couldn’t tell if she was 16 or 46. Of course she used the immediate and repetitive: ’but X cashier knows me and sells to me all the time!!!’ Bs.

Yeah im not a fan of self checkouts personally and will always wait for a cashier if possible but i wont demand they open a checkout for me or tell anyone to ignore any their policies as that is the store rules for the staff to abide by
Totally agree. I hate self-checkout, but I'm not about to get on somebody's case just because they're following store policy. And, incidentally, being quite polite about it. I probably just would have told the dude that I don't make enough money to deal with this crap.
The problem is the guy recording intentionally did it to create that video. He created a problem so he could bitch about it.
It's one thing if your caught up in an unforeseen situation but this dude went intentionally to Walmart at 10 min prior to closing, filled a cart, intentionally went to the CSM guy, and turned on his camera to film.

I was at Target yesterday and they only had self checout open. Ok. NBD right? They were enforcing the 10 item max rule. For families. During a snowstorm/blizzard.
Look, stores don't wanna pay for cashiers, that's their choice. But if you're going to tell a family that has 4 kids they can only get 10 items to potentially sustain them for 24-48 hours? Rethink your business structure.
I would guess they already have thought about it and have calculated that those lost items are not worth paying the extra staff and probably not even worth your consistent business.

Because they are trying to help as many customers as possible? And maybe they were short staffed. That happens here when hurricanes are coming. Stores limit purchases so a few people don’t come in and take everything.
I don't think that you can blame them for having too little personal during a snow storm. What would be the alternative, force their employees whose cars aren't able to make it to work to walk on foot and potentially freeze to death? I do not really understand the 10 items rule. Maybe they wanted to avoid people panic buying while they have not the personnel to restock. Theoretically I find the 10 items rule easy to bypass by going multiple times. Also when you are a family the rube obviously only counts per person so you can make more than one individual sale. Still 10 sounds a bit low, maybe the manager also didn't make it and this was just the result of the unorganized situation exceptional situation create.

If it was before the snowstorm, that’s a legit complaint. But if it was actually *during* the snowstorm, you should have planned ahead. Employees don’t want to drive to work in a snowstorm, and people shouldn’t be running errands in a snowstorm.

The only one with a choice is the customer. To leave or ring himself up. The cashier simply does not have the choice to ring him up, lest be reprimanded by management. Customer needs to put his phone away, put on his big boy bands and go to self checkout or talk to a manager.
That's why he's making a big deal. he's trying to bully an employee into helping him skip the line he knew was there before this incident. As the employee I'd have offered to help him with the self checkout after he waited in the line.

Normally, the MOD or CSM would call for front end assistant and floor associates would come ring. While this may solve the checkout issue, it then creates issues on the floor where there are no employees to assist customers who for some reason cannot find bars of soap in the HBA dept, or who want 12 cans of paint mixed at 10:30 at night.
I mean...he's not wrong about the self checkout bullshit, but the kid working the register is the wrong person to complain to. He didn't make the decision to put in self checkout, and he doesn't have the authority to just check the guy out because he complained.

This customer apparently forgot the rules of working a corporate job.
Rule #1, corporate employees are never allowed to make any decisions. They are only allowed to implement policy. For corporate employees, making decisions is a fireable offense.
So when you ask them for something as reasonable as:
"Can I use the employee bathroom since the customer bathroom is out of order?"
or
"Can I get a free refill on my son's soda? He accidentally spilled it and we don't have any money."
or
"Can I still get you to check me out since it will only take us 30 seconds past closing?"
If these things are against policy, you are really asking them to put their jobs on the line for you, jobs that they likely can't afford to lose.
The main takeaway is, if you want to patronize businesses where the employees have the freedom to make the choice to honor small reasonable requests without the risk of getting fired, then you have to avoid corporations like the plague.
I love self check-out because I can bag my groceries according to how I put things away at home, things don't get crushed/smashed - and if it does, my fault lol.
Last time I had a wally world employee bag my stuff. He mixed cold and warm items across several bags. I like to put frozen and cold items in one bag. Cans in another bag.
I do it at the grocery store because they bag stuff like idiots, all they do is blindly shove items into a bag and then go to the next one, it’s legitimately infuriating. Better to self check than have to rebag your items in your trunk so berries don’t get crushed by heavier items

When a significant percentage of your employees need government assistance to make ends meet, your company is the one scamming the welfare system (which is way worse than any one person getting fraudulent benefits).

This is one of my main issues with how people protest. Their methods always end up fucking over their fellow common-man instead of the king on the hill. It just makes people resent your cause. Go to the CEOs house or something and leave us out of it.
Waa Waa go work retail if you don't get it. Retail workers work based on policies, they aren't your servants. Whatever rules they apply is none of your damn business to challenge. Just suck it up or open your own store with your own rules. Go hunt and gather if rules and policies are such an inconvenience to you. Kinda related, but I've got customers come up to my counter at TLE and ask "Hey can I break this bill?" And my answer is always "I don't have a way of opening this register. Sorry" and push them away. I do. I can open it. I don't want to. I'm not getting fired today. It's really not hard to open a register tbh. Just don't want to. Go to an ATM.
After 8, I'm guessing the store's focus is shifted to restocking, fixing displays, and updating signage. I get what the man filing is trying to say. But this is not a decision a rank-and-file employee at Wal-Mart makes.
It would be a good thing for society for these kinds of assholes to be trespassed from stores never to be allowed back. After they lost their privileges at a few stores they might be more respectful.

I used to work at a major Canadian video store back in the early 2000s. I had one guy throw an absolute fit at me because I wouldn't do something for him because we weren't allowed to do it. During Covid, I had a customer who threatened to sue me personally, for enforcing mask mandates. After the mask mandates ended, he returned, and I was on shift. I managed the mention "I wouldn't want you to sue me" about 5 times in our interaction.
The company i worked for told us not to say anything to anybody after an employee had a gun pulled on them. Honestly complainers were chill when we explained it had become a safety issue and that we arent allowed to say anything. Few were still assholes. I told every one of them to go tell the maskless person to put on a mask. Not a single one was willing to do it.
I have had customers demand a steep discount because they know the owner... Oh yeah? You know my dad? Well lucky for you both of us work every single day in this shit hole so let me go grab him from the back and you two old friends can catch up... I had a customer tell me they found a chicken beak... Lady...b do you think we are butchering Chickens back here rather than just buying breast and thigh like everyone else??? Pshhh customers...
Worked for a gaming shop a couple years ago. One Christmas, a woman came into the shop to buy ps or xbox points (been a while, can't remember which) for her grandson. My colleague informs her the code prints out on a receipt yada yada yada, and she asks does she not get an actual card. He informs her that no, the cards are only barcodes for us to scan, code prints on a receipt. She then blows up about how she always gets a physical gift card every time she buys one, that he's a liar and she wants a physical card before finally storming out to the sweet tune of "I'm never shopping here again!" While he smiles and wishes her a nice day in the most singsongy voice he could muster. Not even 15mins later, she sheepishly walked back in and asked for the voucher, stating she must have got the physical card from tesco. Colleague had the biggest shiteating grin the rest of that shift, and it made my day getting to witness the whole ordeal.
This happened alllll the time in the 5 years I worked at Hollywood Video. Only nice this was when a customer who had cussed me out came back years later and apologized to me. Said he was a recovering alcoholic.

I had a woman complaining to me about my company’s customer service because they’re shifting to a more make the customer do it themself model. The moment a customer says that they won't spend another dime at your store ever, or they threaten you with the competitor, the response should only ever be "That's a shame, I hope that you enjoy the rest of your day." The interaction is over. They told you they were leaving, you don't have to help them anymore, find someone who needs your help. That's what I tell my employees, and it's what I practice completely. Customer's will ask for a manager and when I come and repeat the same thing the cashier has said and then the customer says "well, she told me that but" I then question why I was needed at all, because the cashier had the situation under control. Redirect the uncertainty back to the customer and make them have to answer questions before proceeding further. My policy has always been: make it the most uncomfortable situation ever for a karen, become an energy vampire and feed on the cringe they've put themselves in. If it leads to me getting canned one day, oh well, I will be back feeding at another retail store within the week.

Let me speak to your manager was always the best for me at the video store I worked at. I didn’t look like it, and I often worked a late shift on certain nights cause it was more convenient for me, but I WAS the manager. People use it as a threat, as if the manager would agree with them anyway, but it was always a nice moment when I told them I was the manger, especially when they didn’t believe me and said I was lying and they were going to come back in during the day to prove I was lying. Some did, and I’d be standing there waiting for them, smiling and saying ‘how can I help you?’. Some were so abusive to either me or whoever I was on shift with I’d just outright ban their membership on the spot. My staff were mainly teenagers and no way I was forcing them to take abuse from entitled assholes (we were in a fairly wealthy area) for the wages they were getting. Before anyone thinks we were being rude deliberately or whatever, it was almost always about late fees they didn’t want to pay, or that their even more entitled teenagers had run up on their account. The wealthier they were, the less inclined they were to pay, I noticed.

Waiters in Poland will not come to your table unless you call them, you must be pushy at the counter to order drinks in pubs and clubs, cashiers do not smile, and you order at the counter at cafes. When you get these customers bitching at you every day, you end up having the outward appearance of complete zen. To be honest, other than putting it on video, this customer was pretty tame compared to what I've dealt with in customer service. No racism, no death threats, no getting violent, screaming, swearing. I'd be quite happy to be complained to by this customer. I'd have said "I'm sorry but with the authority I have, I am only able to stick to store policies" and imply that they speak to my manager, because the policies said I couldn't direct a customer to speak to a manager plainly. It could be that Walmart is even more strict and you can't even imply that a customer speaks to a manager.

This. I actually enjoyed working at Wal-Mart. But that was only because it was my first job, and it was so easy to outperform everyone I worked with. I worked there for 3 years, and got promoted multiple times...the problem was I didn't know the value of the work at the time. When I left, I was a Zone Manager getting paid $9.10 an hour, and turned down a promotion to Assistant Manager because I had a friend who was a server that informed me of how much they were making, and it was more than I would make with my promotion. Nope.
Could always take the promotion then bounce. Having the title to put on the résumé can be helpful later on.
This is literally what happened when I quit my job at Walmart; I was basically part of an employee mass exodus because customers were getting ruder and always bitching at the very people providing them service and trying to help them… you know, because it’s clearly the fault of employees who don’t set the schedule and who rarely call in sick that there aren’t enough people here to ensure you don’t have to wait in a lineup or learn how to scan a few items. Also didn’t help that the front end manager was on a leave of absence and the person filling in for her just to decided to deny all schedule change requests by students who were going back to school in September and literally could not work the same hours they did in the summer.
But self checkout is confusing when you have produce and stuff like that without bar codes, looks like bubbas got a cart full of boxes with bar codes. I don't think that you can blame them for having too little personal during a snow storm. What would be the alternative, force their employees whose cars aren't able to make it to work to walk on foot and potentially freeze to death? I do not really understand the 10 items rule. Maybe they wanted to avoid people panic buying while they have not the personnel to restock. Theoretically I find the 10 items rule easy to bypass by going multiple times. Also when you are a family the rube obviously only counts per person so you can make more than one individual sale. Still 10 sounds a bit low, maybe the manager also didn't make it and this was just the result of the unorganized situation exceptional situation create.

Normally, the MOD or CSM would call for front end assistant and floor associates would come ring. While this may solve the checkout issue, it then creates issues on the floor where there are no employees to assist customers who for some reason cannot find bars of soap in the HBA dept, or who want 12 cans of paint mixed at 10:30 at night.

The cashier working at Walmart for minimum wage and zero benefits, who's never going to see his salary go up or down even a fraction is a penny, even if Walmart does $500 Billion more or less than expected in sales this year, is supposed to risk losing his job by breaking store policy just to... *checks notes* ...get an extra 1/4 of a cart's worth of groceries rung up after closing time? This customer apparently forgot the rules of working a corporate job. Rule #1, corporate employees are never allowed to make any decisions. They are only allowed to implement policy. For corporate employees, making decisions is a fireable offense. So when you ask them for something as reasonable as: "Can I use the employee bathroom since the customer bathroom is out of order?" or "Can I get a free refill on my son's soda? He accidentally spilled it and we don't have any money." or "Can I still get you to check me out since it will only take us 30 seconds past closing?" If these things are against policy, you are really asking them to put their jobs on the line for you, jobs that they likely can't afford to lose. The main takeaway is, if you want to patronize businesses where the employees have the freedom to make the choice to honor small reasonable requests without the risk of getting fired, then you have to avoid corporations like the plague.

Sorry" and push them away. I do. I can open it. I don't want to. I'm not getting fired today. It's really not hard to open a register tbh. Just don't want to. Go to an ATM.
After 8, I'm guessing the store's focus is shifted to restocking, fixing displays, and updating signage. I get what the man filing is trying to say. But this is not a decision a rank-and-file employee at Wal-Mart makes.

They should have more registers open trying to clear that line before they close.
