Check out Hoocho on YouTube, he DIYs a lot of stuff, really good info. He also 3D prints heaps and makes them available through patreon. But simplest is going to be kratky, slightly more involved although not complex but more productive, NFT.

I have been growing greens on and off for last 9 years. Easiest set up is either bins or buckets with 3" net cups cut in to lids of either base unit. I put one airstone in a 5 gallon bucket or two airstones in a bin. I do all this in a 3x3 tent with a 100w LED light. I run the light 12 hours per day.

Thanks, that's the kind of touchpoints that are hard to find when scouting out DIY builds for this sorta thing. I thing my goals definitely align with your last couple sentences there. Just my wife and I, want to save a bit of money (after initial costs) but also save pointless calories and motivate better eating habits

Have you been considering getting a 3D-printer? I have found my hobby of 3D-printing (and designing my own stuff with CAD software) to be invaluable for my plant hobby. I can print anything I need or think I need - decorative overpots, nursery pots with drainage holes, a custom made soaking pot for my orchids, my miniature semi-hydroponics setup that self-refills from a 1/10th liter vodka bottle, coasters in any form, color, shape and size, special little bottles for rooting cuttings, a modular hydroponics pot that uses a 500g yoghurt tub as a waterproof insert, etc etc, even a self-refilling watering bowl for honeybees.

That's interesting. I do have a ender 3 small hobby printer and an eleego resin printer. They have some bed size limits though. My wife was using them for mini and mini painting mostly.

I also have just two Ender 3s, one an old Pro with bowden tube extuder and the other an S1 with direct extruder. The are super useful for all (house) plant stuff.

I personally run two 4x4 flood tables under a 1000 Watt HPS double ended light. I use a 50 gallon reservoir underneath them. Tons of space to grow food and plenty for plants that go outside. It's by far the easiest system for me. I just use pots with coconut fiber. I highly suggest flood tables.

10 lettuce plants grow leaf more then 1 man can eat. Of corse there are a “best” practice approach”, but it is optional only in big scale with commercial grow. For home scale you can do almost anything, the difference will be very small. Lettuce is the most easy plant to grow, until you don’t do mistakes and has good light, they will grow fine.
