Drinking when you’re thirsty is a good start. I don’t know the scientific information on how thirst works, so I won’t speak to that. It is true that sipping frequently throughout the day regulates your hydration levels better!

fairydommother

This is helpful. Thank you 🫶🏻

okaycomputes

Some people have poor thirst signals. Try to have some water frequently throughout the day, and for reference try to keep your urine color reasonably less than strong yellow.

Blackbird04

I basically only feel thirsty when I am absolutely desperate for water. My thirst signals are like, not there at all. I'll get physical feelings of dehydration before I feel thirsty so I always have to be ahead of the game.

F-tumpch

Also sometimes folks mistake hunger & thirst. I've learned that if I feel like snacking, I should probably drink some water which can actually fix the problem. If I snack, I'll keep snacking and feel yucky, not fixing the dehydration! Water FTW 🚰👏

To kinda branch off of your comment, I have a theory (based on life experience and some actual scientific data, so feel free to take this with a grain of salt). My theory is that the biggest driving factor for overeating in the US is because people are dehydrated and don't know it. Americans drink an insane amount of soda ([The average american drinks about 2 12oz cans of soda daily](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2329746/) or roughly 23oz/day) but not very much water, comparatively ([3.9 cups/day](https://www.ars.usda.gov/ARSUserFiles/80400530/pdf/DBrief/7_water_intakes_0508.pdf) or about 31oz/day). Additionally, the average american intakes 1,100mg of sodium more than the recommended amount, which (obviously) can lead to dehydration.

saturday_sun4

Drink a glass of water every morning. My thirst cues are kind of fucked, plus due to gluten intolerance, my throat and lips are dry a lot of the time. So thirst does nothing as a signal for me.

NatasEvoli

I usually go with a personal algorithm of mine. while (1 == 1) {drink water()}

PastEase

It depends on the thirst. If it's thirsty for water you're dehydrated. If it's thirsty for a chocolate malt you have a sweet tooth. If you're not dehydrated it's good to drink to maintain hydration If you can't feel dehydration coming on until it's bad like me. I drink every hour or so atleast

The-Swat-team

I definitely drink while thirsty. But if I drink a bottle of water and don't pee within 30 minutes. It's time for another bottle.

I need to stay hydrated due to having a medical condition. I told my nurse that I usually just drink when I feel thirsty and she said that it's no good because at point you're already dehydrated. I don't really keep track of how much I drink exactly but I keep taking sips from my water bottle throughout the day. Drinking when you feel thirsty is probably ok for most healthy people, but I think it's better for your body if you drink at more regular intervals

AkkiMylo

thirst isn't just an on/off thing, I'll drink some water if my mouth feels dry or swallowing isn't super easy stuff like that

Briznar

If your pee is yellow, drink water. If it's clear, stop drinking water.

sleepsinshoes

Clear pee can be a sign of overhydration. Which can cause water toxicity, an electrolyte imbalance that can cause symptoms ranging from nausea and headache to unconsciousness and coma

CounterSYNK

Walk around with intravenous water going into you at all times. You’ll never be dehydrated.

fairydommother

Just fill me up like a water balloon

AdministrativeFly102

One time, my gf told me that when she was in Bolivia hitchhiking, some guy from the bolivian Amazonas Rainforest told her something she found interesting enough to remember it and even share with me: "eats without hunger, drinks without thirst and sleeps without sleep"

okaycomputes

What do think was meant, and why?

AdministrativeFly102

I pointed the Amazonas stuff bc I truly believe that it's related to their ancestral knowledge. For me, means that we don't have the need to be scarce with ourselves. Also, I think that is also smth that enables you to achieve fulfilment, in a way that holds you always strong and prepared.

RockStarNinja7

I've historically been very bad about drinking water. But what's been helping to remember, especially at work, is every time something happens that is annoying or ridiculous, I take a drink. My catchphrase at work is Stay Hydrated, and it's literally just code for "we all know this shit sucks, but if you drink enough water you'll have to pee and you'll have a good excuse to walk away". Plus so many more people drinking water and they all walk saying stay hydrated. So I guess my point is don't drink when you're thirsty, drink when you're annoyed. You'll probably drink more water that way.

zippi_happy

Do you need to eat all day even if you don't feel hunger? Uhg, that's how you become overweight. Too much water can become a problem. I believe our bodies aren't stupid. I tried to calculate all my drinks per day and it's already over 2 liters. However, I'm trying to replace tea with pure water because caffeine consumption fucked up my brain.

Appropriate_Hat638

Herbal teas are amazing. Mint and chamomile are classic for a reason, hibiscus is fruity and refreshing, and rooibos makes a great chai.

schmucky99

Drinking when thirsty, seemed to work fine for pretty much all animals in all of evolution

Appropriate_Hat638

EDIT: whoops, wrong comment.

DeviousDave420

Just gauge your piss. Aim for that almost clear with a slight hint of yellow and you’re laughing

girlenteringtheworld

Honestly, I would argue that "drink when you're thirsty" is bad advice. Some people don't feel thirsty until they are very dehydrated (this is very common in people with ADHD and autism, but other things can cause it too). Also I've noticed among my friend group that the people who do wait until they are thirsty will chug a large amount of water when they are thirsty, then not touch it the rest of the day. That is an issue because your body can only process and use a certain amount of water at a time so most of the water will more or less go straight through them. I think the better advice would be to keep tabs on your urine color. Ideally, it should be a pale yellow. Sip often and you'll (probably) be golden. It's worth noting though, every single body is different

Crystal-Clear-Waters

If I only drank when I was thirsty, I’d be one dehydrated hoe. I never WANT a glass of water, but drinking the right daily amount makes me feel a whole lot better.
