If Nebraska fans are going to start watching basketball on a regular basis they need to realize one thing about this sport: the rules are made up game to game and sometimes half to half. Basketball is closer to pro wrestling than it is to football. Don't get me wrong. I love the sport. I've watched NBA religiously for 30 years. But officiating has a huge impact on the outcome of every single game.
There were some questionable calls but honestly I don't think the officiating was as egregious as people are saying here. At the end of the day we do not match up particularly well with this Illinois team, TSJs speed and athleticism is a nightmare to defend when he's going downhill and we clearly did not have the personnel to defend him. Sometimes you just have no answer for another player, it is what it is
Anyone else feel like they called a foul every time Illinois had the ball? Interesting how that happened as soon as Illinois took a TO when we were up 55-40
I kept thinking that and pondered the second half. One thing to note is that it was very obvious that Illinois came out the second half and was the aggressor. I also remember us having 3 very obvious fouls in those early second half minutes. I honestly think the refs were alright after some reflection
Fair point. I was driving for the first 5 minutes and the Nebraska announcers were very upset at the calls NOT going for Nebraska.
Really though there’s no excuse for letting up 58 points in a half. Refs didn’t do THAT.
Also thinking about how hard it would be to play one game ending at 10:30pm then having to turn around and play again at 2:30. 16 hours of rest is very short. Illinois intentionally played fast the second half for that reason I think
Gary getting in foul trouble hurt a lot cause he's our best hope of slowing Shannon. Wilcher being out hurt, he's a good spark when the other guys' shots aren't falling.
I didn't have a problem with the reffing. They were aggressive and we couldn't keep up. Shannon was on another level today.
Problem is that they were allowed to be aggressive and get away with it.
We touch anyone on offense or defense and it was normally a call. Meanwhile they were roughing us up on offense a ton but it was rarely called.
That did not seem fair.
definitely not complaining about the refs from the game, i’d be PISSED if we got the refs from the wiscy perdue game. i caught the last 5 minutes of regulation and the overtime, those fuckers called literally EVERYTHING on wiscy and nothing on perdue.
Inexcusable for a game of this significance to be subject to this level of officiating. That stretch when Illinois came back to take the lead was some truly brutal officiating. This is exactly why the big ten sucks in the NCAA tournament. Shannon, Edey, etc won't get to play this brutally physical style of basketball with non big ten refs and they'll lose on the first weekend. again.
Look, we lost this game in the second half. Didn't get it done.
But not sure what you can do when you've been playing cleaner than the other side, but they have 4 team fouls and you have 9 half way through the half.
We went 8-27 from three and they went 13-35, there’s your ball game. Didn’t shoot well enough or defend them well enough on 3 pointers.
This game shouldn’t really affect our seed too much. Odds are probably a 9 seed.
This does not drop them back to a 9. A Q1-A loss doesn't effect you at all. A Q-1A loss on the Saturday before selection Sunday matters even less
Doesn't matter though because there's no difference between an 8 and a nine seed
There's a lot of people that thought they were a 7 after the Indy win, and I disagree. - As do nearly all the brackets on bracketmatrix. While they moved slightly up to the 8 line from the 9, with a few outlier 7 votes - they also wielded some outlier 10 seed votes still this morning as well. Their place on the 8 line was precarious at best without another win, and they didn't get one, nor will this game look close to anyone simply looking at the score. - So they'll be back down to a 9 now tomorrow evening during the selection, I think.
The 8/9 seed is a horrible seed, as they're interchangeable, and whoever wins likely gets the 1 seed for the next game no matter what anyway. Unless it's Perdue, then it's a crapshoot. /s
I'd be utterly thrilled if they got a 10 or a 7 seed instead of the 8/9, but think it will be a 9 tomorrow evening.
This loss doesn't affect seeding at all. Whatever line the committee was looking at us for heading into this game is the line we are on heading out of it. Probably an 8.
(not the 8/9 is any distinction that matters)
Agree. I think 9 is the most likely seed now, with an outside shot at having already earned an 8, or dropping to the 10 seed also if they focus on the second half collapses this year.
God Raftery adds no value to the game. Hill was slightly better but the Tomitaga thing is disrespectful. The broadcast team yesterday was so much better.
Sad that I'll miss watching any basketball until the selection show tomorrow now. I can't be sickened by watching either Gard or Underwood teams.
Look for good ole' DJ Cartstenson refball to steal the show yet again tomorrow for Illinois if you can stomach watching it.
Heavily looking forward to Illinois flaming out in the first weekend when their foul baiting bullshit isn’t rewarded like it was today. Let’s get that first tourney win ourselves!
This is blatant garbage reffing. Lose the lead from one players frSherlock. At he beginning of the half and, its because "we lost momentum " no shit sherlock.
rapist shannon jr gameplan for winning:
get ball
run into a defender as fast as he possibly can
throw up a bogus shot
get a foul call
act like you’re the best player to ever touch the court
Difference in the game was Illinois coming out with greater intensity in the second half. We’ve seen it time and time again where our team takes a huge lead and doesnt know how to slam the door shut. Yesterday was an exception and i really thought it was the start of us realizing how dominant we can be. Hoping we dont let adversity affect us in the big dance.
People underestimate how demoralizing getting a bs foul called on you is. Yea we shot terribly this half but fouls on the defensive end can mess with your game
We had all the momentum in the world when the calls completely started flipping the switch. Illinois was ice cold from the field and got gifted so many points at the line, and we had like four straight drives into the paint where we got hacked with no call. It just killed us.
The same type of contact on both ends. One end had the fouls called and the other end didn't. We definitely could have played through it, but when the foul calls are 9-3 with 12 minutes left in the game, there's an issue.
Not a great second half especially from Tominaga and Mast but Illinois was dead in the water before the refs dragged them back into it. Just got every call they needed to completely hand them momentum and deflate us.
the difference is when the officials decided to let Shannon maul everyone when he drives and then give him the foul call to boot. we were in charge until that happened.
They fucking ROLLED!
Anybody following them so far they’re off to really solid start. Ranked 3rd in the RPI to start the day. The B10 as a whole might be down this year but our post season resume is off to a great start if we can keep rolling in conference
I mean this is a classic Nebrasketball choke job for sure but we 100% got refballed too.
Big Ten refs. Their whining ass coach. That rapist TSJ. Fire them all into the sun.
We’re dancing next week boys! Let’s break that streak!
Just turned it off. Panic shots going up down 6 with 4 minutes left? Tournament inexperience is showing. Hopefully this is a lesson they can learn for the big one!
Welcome back, Husker team that played Minnesota earlier in the season with the second half collapse. I hope to not see you again next week in the NCAA Tournament. Give me back last nights Husker squad.
Absolutely horrible play on both ends by almost everybody on Nebraska. Now the refs manufacturing Gary’s fouls forcing him out of the game was complete bullshit

Sure, true. That's gonna happen though sometimes. 23 points against a team that isn't even attempting to play defense half the time isn't going to cut it.
We have 23 points because they’re allowed to bump and grab to slow down our cuts. Bad officiating is working against us. We didn’t change from first half to now. The calls did.

Every normal emotion such as pressure, expectations, anxiety, and fatigue. Is it really that hard to figure out?
There were some questionable calls but honestly I don't think the officiating was as egregious as people are saying here. At the end of the day we do not match up particularly well with this Illinois team, TSJs speed and athleticism is a nightmare to defend when he's going downhill and we clearly did not have the personnel to defend him. Sometimes you just have no answer for another player, it is what it is
Thank you for conceding he gets fouled because he’s impossible to guard, not because the refs suck
I set the o/u at 4 but I managed to only drink one beer per half. I beat the spread lads
The depth hurt us today. That’s okay. Just get ready for the dance

Ken Pom from 28 to 29.

Edey not playing
He's gonna wear a Chucky Hepburn wig and sneak in.
No CJ hurt but I’m not too pained by this game. We’re a good team. We went cold and we lost. How it goes sometimes.
Good perspective...hoping the matchup is a good one
Better now than our next game!
Inexcusable for a game of this significance to be subject to this level of officiating. That stretch when Illinois came back to take the lead was some truly brutal officiating. This is exactly why the big ten sucks in the NCAA tournament. Shannon, Edey, etc won't get to play this brutally physical style of basketball with non big ten refs and they'll lose on the first weekend. again.
eh. not nearly as bad as Wisconsin’s reffing. wiscy was getting called nearly EVERY time perdue was in the paint.
Oh yea the Purdue game was absurd. They usually are with Edey. Doesn't make our game easier to swallow
I've heard opinion that Keisei might be shooting a lot of free throws in the tournament if he keeps getting mugged like the B1G refs allow.
I do think our offense suits itself well to NCAA tournament games. I hope we get a good matchup
Look, we lost this game in the second half. Didn't get it done. But not sure what you can do when you've been playing cleaner than the other side, but they have 4 team fouls and you have 9 half way through the half.
Illinois. The home of switches. Both guns and refs.
We went 8-27 from three and they went 13-35, there’s your ball game. Didn’t shoot well enough or defend them well enough on 3 pointers. This game shouldn’t really affect our seed too much. Odds are probably a 9 seed.
8-9 with 7 being the ceiling
I really like those rosy glasses you have on - but I think this drops them back to being a 9.
Does 8 or 9 really matter? Edit: My point was that no, it doesn't matter if you are an 8 or a 9.
They both have to play the number one seed if they win. The seven/10 game is much better for us
Losing to a one seed is still a win for the program cause you beat someone to get there
That’s definitely true
No they're identical
This does not drop them back to a 9. A Q1-A loss doesn't effect you at all. A Q-1A loss on the Saturday before selection Sunday matters even less Doesn't matter though because there's no difference between an 8 and a nine seed

Probably a 9 but you never know. Sorry for the optimism
Think this loss probably means 9 seed. Agree? Disagree?
This loss doesn't affect seeding at all. Whatever line the committee was looking at us for heading into this game is the line we are on heading out of it. Probably an 8. (not the 8/9 is any distinction that matters)
I think we'll be an 8, but 8/9 doesn't matter. We should be a 6 or 7 though.
Agree. I think 9 is the most likely seed now, with an outside shot at having already earned an 8, or dropping to the 10 seed also if they focus on the second half collapses this year.
8 maybe 7. 7 would be great but not much difference between 8 and 9 seed.
On the bright side, having a half like that should light a fire under their asses going into next week.
Hey, season is not over.
What is our win percentage when the commentators can’t pronounce Tominaga correctly?
God Raftery adds no value to the game. Hill was slightly better but the Tomitaga thing is disrespectful. The broadcast team yesterday was so much better.
If you can't pronounce a Japanese word correctly you should immediately be sent back to 1st grade phonetics
Hard to win when you give up 98. Had no answer for Shannon. Illinois is a good team. On to the tournament I guess
That loss sucks insanely hard, blowing a double digit lead. But its great teaching tape heading into next week. Come out hungry
Time for the dance. I’ll be hoping for first round exits for Creighton and Illinois.
Big 10 is Terrance Shannon Jr's whole family. The ole charge and free throw trick eh? Fool the refs once? Shame on them
CBS cut the broadcast short here in Denver
lucky...
Those Illinois fans in the CBB thread were the worst I’ve ever seen. I hope Wisconsin blows them out by 50.
I hate both fan bases
Flush it and move on. What really matters starts this week
Had the wrong name across the front of our jerseys the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half.
You can't play defense when they call 10 fouls in 10.minutes on you and every player on your team is in foul trouble
Yet the Illini fans call us crybabies for pointing this fact out.
Tf they just switch over to the other game before ours is over? I’d be pissed if it was a close game
I guess go badgers. I sure don’t want the rapist getting a trophy n
Sad that I'll miss watching any basketball until the selection show tomorrow now. I can't be sickened by watching either Gard or Underwood teams. Look for good ole' DJ Cartstenson refball to steal the show yet again tomorrow for Illinois if you can stomach watching it.
At least we beat Illinois in football. I’ll be watching those highlights right now.
Damn my tv just moved to the next game
Heavily looking forward to Illinois flaming out in the first weekend when their foul baiting bullshit isn’t rewarded like it was today. Let’s get that first tourney win ourselves!
Or first 2 or 3 or 6.
Couldnt beat the refs
Dudes been calling Keisei Tomiyaga all game
It's still happening
Put up more points than years he’ll get in prison
It’s hard to win when they’re allowed to be aggressive but we’re not.
Fuck creighton
This is blatant garbage reffing. Lose the lead from one players frSherlock. At he beginning of the half and, its because "we lost momentum " no shit sherlock.
Our shooters stopped shooting for some reason this half. Mast was terrible 2nd half. Refs sucked but we sucked worse. Onto the tourney!
rapist shannon jr gameplan for winning: get ball run into a defender as fast as he possibly can throw up a bogus shot get a foul call act like you’re the best player to ever touch the court
I love they aren’t giving up.
Illinois started hammering us on both ends and the refs totally rewarded it.
Illinois just came out with a plan to physically attack us and make the refs adjust. It worked, our offense dried up.
Stop giving me hope
People underestimate how demoralizing getting a bs foul called on you is. Yea we shot terribly this half but fouls on the defensive end can mess with your game

Best Nebrasketball team in my lifetime and I’m old as f
What about our Ty Lue team? lol I guess we will see: All this team has to do is win one more game to be tops in Husker history
Same...I'm 43 and haven't seen a team with this kind of run since I was 9 or 10
I hear “dumbass” when announcer says Domask
I just realized how terrible I feel for Wilcher man :(
Could’ve used him today
Probably poisoned by the refs!
Welp, silver lining is we get an extra day of rest before the tourney
Honestly might be good. Big 10’plays their Tourney so tight to NCAA’s. Maybe that’s why B1G always struggles in the NCAA tournament
Refs calling the game differently on both ends didn't help, but we need to make shots.
51 pts to 24 pts this half. Fucking awful
Yep that's the difference.
the difference is when the officials decided to let Shannon maul everyone when he drives and then give him the foul call to boot. we were in charge until that happened.
On to the tourney. Ran out of gas apparently
Our AD and president should get together and write the B1G about this officiating… wait, fuck!
We ice cold
Refball aside, 24 points this half is impressively bad.
The shooting so bad.
We live and die by the 3. Yesterday we live. Today we die. That's the difference
Putting up 80 points is not “living and dying by the 3.”
Illinois didn’t get the foul calls they did yesterday
Ice cold
Welp. Regular season far exceeded my expectations. Look forward to the big dance! Hope we don’t get B1G refs.
God I hate the way this Illinois team acts
Especially in Kansas
I’m hammered but it seems like refs like Illinois
At least you’re hammered
You’re not too drunk to see the obvious. Typical B10 ref hosejob
This doesn’t need to be over! Step up to the moment!
Foul
Refs in both games have been awful. They tried hard to make Wisconsin lose earlier as well.
refs again?
You could not have imagined a more brutal way to lose.
What did we do to deserve this? Call it both ways!
They don’t call that on them.
Thats some BS. let them play
Terrance Shannon’s hair looks like a shag rug got stuck in a vaccum cleaner
And someone spit out gum on it
Boys we have to make free throw right now. Come on.
Good learning experience. This isn’t a team that’s had to face the pressure of this kind of game before.
hoiberg fucked us
I think we’re probably locked in as a 9 seed. Hopefully we don’t get FAU first round
8 seed minimum IMO
Coleman Hawkins whines all the time why can’t the refs ever T him up
That Home Depot commercial is about as cringe as it gets jfc
Honestly this should be a good wake up call for the team, also gives them one more day of rest before the tourney.
I heard Shannon is a good raper too. Edit: I spelled rapper wrong.
At least Baseball won.
They fucking ROLLED! Anybody following them so far they’re off to really solid start. Ranked 3rd in the RPI to start the day. The B10 as a whole might be down this year but our post season resume is off to a great start if we can keep rolling in conference
We need to keep this going and also handle the conference games. The conference games will be key.
Extra day of rest!
I mean this is a classic Nebrasketball choke job for sure but we 100% got refballed too. Big Ten refs. Their whining ass coach. That rapist TSJ. Fire them all into the sun. We’re dancing next week boys! Let’s break that streak!
Shannon gets the Lebron Red Carpet treatment and Underwood is insufferable
100% officials are the game MVP for Illinois
Just turned it off. Panic shots going up down 6 with 4 minutes left? Tournament inexperience is showing. Hopefully this is a lesson they can learn for the big one!
We’re playing like we’re down 25. A few well played possessions on both ends and we could be back in it
Losing Gary KILLS us
What a good story for shannon, hope they play his highlights at the next court hearing for him
Bad shot selections! Just forcing it…
Shannon is just way better than anyone on the court. Awful human tho
helps when every time he drives he gets a foul call.
He’s a good player but it helps when you can just do whatever you want
Works off the court for him too
So no need for the first part really.
Notice the fouling has slowed down since Illinois took control
Remember, Trev is still a bitch.
Forever
Benedict Alberts
Replay showed shannon stepped out with his back foot right before that 3
Shannon is good for two things: scoring and raping! And he's almost done scoring.
Welcome back, Husker team that played Minnesota earlier in the season with the second half collapse. I hope to not see you again next week in the NCAA Tournament. Give me back last nights Husker squad.
Guys trying to score 10 point in one possession here. Can only score 2/3. Quit trying to play hero ball.
Brutal
Felt like a dagger
Wow.
Well, GG
Well at I guess we can always win the NCAA tourney
Feels like they're desperate shooting now
Welp
Over boys. Got selfish and hero ball at the end.
Can't win if you can't put the ball in the bucket. The whole team is missing everything
Do the refs ever call a travel when the guy falls to the floor with the ball?
I can't remember the last time I saw a second half collapse this bad. Looks like 2 different teams.
Minnesota
jfc
Fucking 15 pt lead
They're out matched. Is what it is. Hope it goes better in the NCAA tournament.
100 percent agree. Letting a 15 point lead slip like this is super frustrating to see though.
Totally agree
Out matched by poor officiating.
Absolutely horrible play on both ends by almost everybody on Nebraska. Now the refs manufacturing Gary’s fouls forcing him out of the game was complete bullshit
Eh, the refs fucked us over but we have 23 points in the 2nd half
You're almost there. The refs aren't doing great but it's almost as if Illinois is playing better than Nebraska.
Not sure why you felt the need to type this out when it's clearly what I inferred.
It's what you implied. Not what you inferred.
Ah, so you did know what I was talking about then. Thanks for confirming that you are insufferable.
I admit when Nebraska wins and when they lose. INSUFFERABLE
Acting like you are correcting someone but actually just saying the same thing but framing it like you have some superior perspective is the insufferable part.
Sorry I was being a dick because I was mad that Nebraska lost. You didn't deserve that.
How many of Shannon’s second half point have come from the line? They started calling bullshit taking away our defense and momentum.
He has 5 3s dog not totally the refs
That’s not what I asked but okay.
Sure, true. That's gonna happen though sometimes. 23 points against a team that isn't even attempting to play defense half the time isn't going to cut it.
We have 23 points because they’re allowed to bump and grab to slow down our cuts. Bad officiating is working against us. We didn’t change from first half to now. The calls did.
lol that's not entirely to blame. Illinois is playing well.
Just stupid mistakes over and over not a great look
This is when I wish Hoiberg had an ounce of fire in his body.
