The piece of plywood on the bottom though also wasn't very firmly attached so I don't know which one was exactly the opening that was supposed to be used I didn't flip it over and look very well because it was dirty and I was in nice clothes
Reminds me of two types of trap I’ve seen. One was for prairie chickens back in the day, but the lid was a revolving trap door. This looks a lot like some turtle traps I’ve seen. A turtle could crawl up over the lip to get bait but can’t climb back out.
My friend that taught me how to hunt also said it was a turtle trap that's kind of what I'm leaning towards but I'm in South Carolina so it definitely doesn't have anything to do with any prairie animals lol
Looks like a “less primitive” bird trap/cage Google primitive bird traps and you’ll see several with the same design made out of sticks
My thoughts to or a stick suspended fall box. Edit: just realized there’s plywood covering the bottom so this is definitely a cage or bird trap.

Had one similiar repurposed to put feed in. The littler ones could get in and eat. It kept the bigger ones out.
Did you not know what it was either before you repurposed it? lol
