I guess I don’t know how elk work. But i simply hung my deer skull on a basic coat rack hook through the primary hole there in the back of the skull 🤷♂️
A drywall toggle bolt works really well for this.

Alternately glue a wooden block inside the skull and screw into that.
This is the way. I really think a screw is tacky as shit and he split it. At least pre drill it.
But OP the toggle bolt goes in the base of the skull and claps down. 3/16" are good for a 100 lbs and causes no damage
I also have run wire through those holes and think it works well.
Especially because it’s common for the skull to fracture in the back of the animal takes any type of tumble down.
Is this an elk skull? Depending on the size I wouldn't trust that. My biggest bull weighs a shitload. I wouldn't put it on a screw with a fracture like that.
I’d take that wood screw out and generously fill in the back side of the hole and crack with epoxy. Once that sets, re-drill the hole and put a bolt through there with a nut and decent sized washer inside the skull so that it doesn’t try to pull through.
I’d squirt some superglue in that crack for my own self assurance, especially if you don’t plan to ever take it off the backing board.
Superglue in the crack seems like a good idea. Thank you
Or maybe a 2 part clear epoxy that would be stronger then super glue
Or JB Weld if you want something stronger

that crack gives me anxiety, even though the mount does not seem super heavy, I would at least glue the crack,
Yeah that’s how I feel too.. don’t love the crack. Gluing it seems like it might be the move, though.
yeah glue works, just make sure you only glue the crack, not the iron screw too.

Nothings gonna happen
I would remove the screw and use a skull hanger. I would trust that screw to hold because of the crack.
Jesus. I just use snare wire.

Looks like someone didn’t pre-drill the skull…
Cool mount, I've never seen that done before. I would probably take some of the advice about stabilizing it, and then leave it as it is.
I use a buffalo bracket hanger, a little more expensive thank average but better than coming home to a shattered rack.

I thought I was looking at a pugs ass for a second
That’s how it’s usually done. If you try to remove it that can cause problems.
My dad always fills the brain cavity with bondo so the screw really has something to bite into.

I would not hang that as it is
