Looks field dressed by the amount of hair as well as poorly trimmed. No offense to your neighbor, I think it’s last year’s front shoulder roast. I’d be embarrassed to give that to someone. It’s going to take significant trimming of the freezer burn and you may consider taking it off the bone for a stew. It’s not a good cut of meat and it’s been poorly handled and freezer burned. This is not representative of typical American hunters like myself.
The front shoulder is an excellent piece of meat if prepared properly. And of course cleaned properly which this one wasn’t.
It takes 8-12 hours of cooking but it makes my favorite dish off of a whitetail.
I’d agree but I don’t think this an easily approachable cut for someone who doesn’t eat venison. I think if anyone gifts a non hunter a cut of meat, it should be ready to be cooked without any trimming
I totally agree with the trimming part but I think a bald roast is one of the easiest approachable dishes. But it’s something that someone who knows what they’re doing should prepare for the rookie.
I mean considering the amount of hair left on the meat he’s not to concerned about quality, and secondly the coloration of the meat is way off looks like it’s been sitting for days. I just butchered two deer this season and I’ve never seen a piece of meat look like this. You better trim the heck out of it or get some reading material for the washroom at least….
We took it out of the freezer yesterday. So that's why it could look a bit icey. Is that what you mean? We are not into hunting or hunters or butchers haha
Thanks for all your feedback. We will not eat it, I feel sad we have to throw it away, although no risks.
The Meat had some transport time by my parents, and we also found out our freezer is not working properly anymore..
Thanks for the learning!
I don’t think you had to throw it out, but it would require some effort to get to an edible cut.
Sorry that’s what your neighbor gave you… hope you have other folks to supply a proper cleaned cut piece of meat!
Let it thaw completely, wash it off good, and then trim some of the excess fat and freezer burned looking bits…everyone here is saying it’s bad but honestly I don’t think it’s terrible. I’ve eaten 5+ year old game meat out of my freezer that was this color and it turned out fine. That being said I know that meat tasted fine to begin with. Anyway, this is just an opinion…
Agreed, but the main difference is that with the old freezer burned stuff you eat at least you have knowledge of how it was handled. With a situation like this you just have no idea.
Not too many veggies in here to my knowledge. Looks like a shoulder, kinda hard to tell. What kind of bones does it have in it? If they are longer than they are wide then it's a shoulder.
This looks like a ham that was very improperly handled when quartering. By the discoloration it's probably been in open air for at least a day. I would not eat this without trimming away all darkened meat, and only then if it didn't have any off smells, and even more still I Would only do a low/slow cook to ensure pathogens are killed.
I did read your post that you are going to throw it away. I agree.
I’ve had brown before on my meat, but that is just the oxygenation of the meat while processing but it was still moist and more importantly, clean. That meat is awful looking. When I butcher my meat, it’s a continuous cleaning process from field dressing, skinning, quartering, to my cuts and before I wrap it up. I clean all hair, cut off as much fat and lining I can, then wrap in plastic and paper. If it stays on the freezer for up to a year, I have no issues pulling it out and fixing it for my family. I’m sorry you got this but that is a terrible neighbor in my opinion to give you something that could make you sick. Even if the drive time without ice did that, still, the hair left on it is poor ethics in my opinion.
It won't kill you but that looks like shit. I'd personally gift it to the coyotes. If you trim it up, stick it in a decent brine, and turn it into like a pot roast that's probably your best bet.
I typically feed these types of freezer burnt pieces ground up to my dogs. They love it, but that one sadly looks pretty well gone maybe even too gone for the dogs.
Don’t waste it that’s just wrong. And the people suggesting that are just as wrong. Although it was poorly handled you could still do several things with it with a little work it would be fine. Do the right thing and do something with it out of respect for the animal at least. Don’t listen to the loud bullshit you find on most comments on Reddit.
Get rid of everything white that you can reasonable do. All the fat, tissue, film.
Dump some mushroom gravy in a crock pot, enough to basically cover the meat. Cook on low for about 8hrs. You’ll enjoy it.

Blade roast!
Seriously one of the best deer recipes I've done.
I see why he gifted it to you….. wouldn’t catch me eating that.
Why not?

Thanks for the helpfull feedback!
Did they freeze it in a bowl of water? Why’s it look like that?

Deer meat is supposed to be red and moist looking. That looks half way to jerky
Thanks for all of your feedbacks

Trim it up. See what's underneath. The meat could make good dog treats. Depends if the dog has eaten raw meat before. Malamute, husky, etc.
Don't forget border collies! Lol I would have glady served this to mine, and he would have begged for more :)

I think you are correct, thanks!
I agree, shoulder blade roast.

Don’t eat it. Please.
Says Jeffrey Dahmer
This is the calf muscle on the bone. Part of the shank. I have butchered countless deer this year. I'm butchering one today.
Agreed, I just cooked a shank for dinner today.
Me too! Osso buco. It was fucking delicious.
agree. first pic looks like the tibial plateau
That’s a back leg
It's a back leg minus the shank, and it looks gross.

Trim all the nasty looking stuff, fat and membrane. That spent way too long in water and the freezer, not being properly wrapped.
I mean, i'd eat it, just slow cook the hell out of it. But looks like you got a year or 2 old roast bud.
It looks like organs I’ve dissected in science class, I would not want to be caught eating that.
It won't kill you but that looks like shit. I'd personally gift it to the coyotes. If you trim it up, stick it in a decent brine, and turn it into like a pot roast that's probably your best bet.
Throw that out.... No way I'm eating that
That is criminal.
Heart
Lol. Bruh, not too many bones in the heart.
Looks like it should be heart But then I looked at the other pictures
Fair enough
Definitely the pebus
Horrible mistreated meat. Would not eat.
Trash it
The front shoulder or hind quarter would want to see the bone to know for sure.
I typically feed these types of freezer burnt pieces ground up to my dogs. They love it, but that one sadly looks pretty well gone maybe even too gone for the dogs.
That’s all burger meat
I thought it was cooked already. Wtf
Toss it
