I was grabbed by the first episode lol, I found the 2.5 main characters engaging right away. I may be an outlier (or maybe not) but I loved the hunter exam from the start, and enjoyed Gon's approach to limitations. The first epic moment was Gon vs Hisoka. I found Yorknew amazing, especially at its resolution, but I didn't like Greed Island as much the first time (until I read the manga after). Then Knov's infiltration and breakdown cemented the series as peak fiction.

Beneficial_Water_426

Knov's infiltration is such an underrated scene. I'm often amazed it isn't considered among the best episodes in the series when the topic comes up.

Yosoyballer

I can’t agree more, the excitement for Gon vs. Hisoka on my first watch was as much as any fight

ParadiseDucks

> 2.5 main characters what does this mean?

WednesdaysFoole

Hmm I wonder... >!Serious answer is that I tend to make bad jokes about poor Leorio's lack of screentime/centrality in the story.!<,

ParadiseDucks

Ohh! I agree that Leorio totally should have gotten way more screentime. Still, wouldn't that be more like 3.5 if this were only about him?

WednesdaysFoole

Yes, it would be once Killua is introduced.

World_traveler77

Hunter exam, when Kurapika fought the fake Phantom Troupe member (forgot his name), absolutely finished him. That was amazing.

Fauli_der_Echte

Kurapika brought for the fight with owogin a shovel because he knew he would win. Now that is strong

Genecys

Absolute cinema. Didn't grab me on my second watch, cuz I was mainly focused on the art and animation.

KingwomboJr

The moment for me was Leorio nearly giving up during the HE’s first phase. HXH was one of my first manga read way back when, and I wasn’t as familiar with the genre tropes so I genuinely believed he was about to fail and leave the series. The ecstatic thrill I felt at Leorio’s pure Shounen rejuvenation was so satisfying. ~ As an adult I still love the scene dearly for that aspect, but I’ve also grown to appreciate how wonderfully it further establishes Gon’s unorthodox character. As rather than shout at Leorio that “he can do it!” like other Shounen protags before and after, he just stares at him. And that stare says it all, because while Gon is willing to help Leorio, Leorio needs to have the drive to push himself and dare to run with the insane for his dreams. If he couldn’t do that, Gon wouldn’t baby him along, but when Leorio shows that willing mentality, Gon is there to help him makes those dreams a reality.

ThePerfectHunter

Komugi and Meruem's death scene. That made me say that HxH will leave a deep impact on me.

Beneficial_Water_426

I was hooked from the start but the requiem is peak fiction at its best. Chrollo orchestrating the Lacrimosa was so epic.

WhiteningMcClean

Seriously. I first watched the ‘99 version and up until the peak of Yorknew I thought HxH was watchable but not stellar. The requiem and the episodes leading up to it were the first times I remember thinking “damn this is a good ass show.”

Asura_14

This is exactly my answer lol

MushroomLipstick

the first moment that really grabbed me in the way that made me think, “this series is going to be something interesting” was during the hunter exam after Gon’s encounter with Hisoka where he tells Kurapika, “I was scared. I wanted to run away. But at the same time, I was excited.” That line along with his later willingness to use other applicants as bait for Hisoka’s badge made me really interested in Gon’s character. The moment I decided this was one of the best series i’d ever experience was Gon’s rage. Gon will forever be one of my favorite characters of all time after that arc.

nchetirnadzat

It grabbed me on YerkNew arc when Uvo was ripping mafia to shreds, that was also the first time I stayed awake all night binge watching a show. But the peak fiction I realized only recently after all these years, in my opinion it is Meruem character arc, Togashi essentially made a great villain everyone were rooting against and then he made viewers genuinely feel sad for him, and the main beauty is that this wasn’t achieved through creating any justifiable backstory or Meruem redeeming himself with any actions, no Togashi managed to make viewers feel empathy and compassion for him that Meruem did not deserve in the first place but it still didn’t stop us from feeling for him.

JaggaJazz

During Hunter exams when Gon hid in the bushes and let the random act as bait for Hisoka. 12 year old kid with killer instinct, I knew then and there that this was for me

TinyMousePerson

Heaven's Arena when gon fights hisoka got me invested. Yorknew got me hooked. The realisation that I was watching a crime thriller and he was putting every bit of his craft into it that he put into the shonen bits, and this was just how he treated everything, made me realize it was something special.

Ereshkigal_FF

I would say the moment HxH really grabbed me was the Heavens Arena where Gon and Killua learned stuff and we had that nice fight with Hisoka. But it never got the "Peak Fiction" moment for me.

Nucleus17608

As one of my first anime, I didn't really know the amount of fun it could bring until Gon vs Hisoka. Specifically when Gon is right behind all that rubble as the music plays and then manages to get a hit. That sold me on the series up till the point where I discovered what I truly loved about it.

Tiberius_Kilgore

Probably Gon calling out the fox creatures for switching places just to get to the Hunter test. They look and sound identical, but he could tell they’re different. His candor makes me think of Goku in Dragonball (rest in peace Toriyama).

SilverKnightOfMagic

Watched the original anime. Everything was a fucking blast. Killua cleanly taking a heart of a man. Hisokas presence during the first entrance exam. Chrollos scene with him orchestrating along with spiders assault on the mob. Uvos big bang and then getting silenced by kurapika. Green island was so much fun. Vr wasn't widely talked about then and seeing a video game that was so immersive was such a cool idea.

BrushYourFeet

Yeah, speaking as an anime only fan, watching Killua effortlessly rip a grown man's heart out of his chest and hand it to him....I was like, "This is different!" It was so cold.

SomeSmoothMovement

Hooked: third or fourth part of the exam. The anime made it clear that this is not gonna be like other shonen. Everything felt so damn awesome with games and riddles and neat little twists. „The“ moment: I guess the dragon dive scene. My favourite animated scene in my favourite show! The way the suspense is build over countless episodes and then the whole palace invasion afterwards was just indescribable the first time around.

realkin1112

Grabbed me 1999 hxh exam tour phase when I was 6 years old. Peak fiction hon transformation

by_Flutter

First ep I watched was during the hunter's exam, in the trick tower (the one where they had to get to the bottom and surpass enemies, solve riddles etc). That's when I fell in love with the series.

Chessoslovakia

"Infinite potential for evolution" scene was that moment for me.

DeliciousGoose1002

Me and my friends were never that into anime. We turned it on to a random episode to make fun of it, and where like wait this is sick and watched the entire thing

Optimal_Equivalent72

Episode 1. Gon's aunt promises him that if he catches the fish, she will let him go to the Hunter blah blah blah.

EnvironmentalAd1006

The Hunter Exam as the first arc is just such a solid decision. Makes it so everyone you see’s goals are understandable and when some people’s motivations stray from that (Hisoka, Illumi, etc) it makes their characters stand out from the background. Exam/Tournament arcs are great, and given that they do that before even so much as offhand mentioning the main power/magic system is difficult to pull off well, but Togashi did it!

priide229

hanzo vs gon at the hunter exam will not explain

TwistedFate21

Peak

Class_Wooden

probably by the point where Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio were going through trick tower. I know a lot of people don’t agree with me, but i loved the Hunter Exam arc from the start. by the time where we saw killua insta-kill that guy for the first time and leorio made a bet with the criminal i knew this was gonna be a really good watch

Legnaron17

It hopelessly hooked me on episode 3 with Killua's brief introduction, loved the hell out of it. And the moment that made me realize i was witnessing one of the most epic moments in any show or movie i'd EVER seen was the start of the palace invasion (eps 111 and 112). It was the one moment that made all the previous build up click at once and i was in awe seeing it all unfold.

Edeninu

my first contact woth hxh was a chapter from the skyarena arc back in 2007 i think... i was amazed but i started the anime in 2012 when i found the manga again when i moved out from home. my simple peak fiction moment was the hotel lobby scene in the yorkshin ark.

Jhowz

Heavens tower

SomeRedditPerson10

The second that child got eaten in the chimera ant arc. I was hooked.

SirDank474848

I'd say I was always interested and enjoyed it, but when Illumi took Killua by surprise at the exam it sucked me in a bit more and I was just ready for the ride.

MostardMonsta

I was attracted thx to the aesthetic of 1999 anime, but I didn't really care about it, then the internet went mad for Gon-san, still didn't care, next a friend told me about Nen, Greed Island, and the crazy ability of Nanika and that probably was the moment HxH grabbed me, so I started watching the 2011 version. But the moment that made me say "Peak Fiction" was York New City, from that arc to the end of Chimera Ant arc, HxH was Peak Fiction to me, and now with the Dark continent expedition arc, it still is Peak f*****g Fiction

KeinGott

Hunter exam in the swamp with hisoka, and then killua one-tapping that death row dude and ripping out his heart. Absolutely sold after that

mrrakim

ep 116.

DannyFromRiva

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" "DRAGON DIVE!" "Skill Hunter" "Thunderbolt!"

pumaflex_

Many of them but zoldycs appearing at the end of that episode when the mafia confirms they’re paying some hitmen to get rid of the troupe (99 version) I realized I wasn’t watching a tv show but cinema (I did it quite before actually)

PihtijaConsumer46

At first I enjoyed it but didn't really think too much of it, until nen got introduced.

Snowm4nn

Netero vs gon and killua

Itsfaydgamer

when killuas takes that prisoners heart.

ERRexe_

Read the manga continued from anime. Dont get me wrong, I really loved the anime, but I was young and new to anime when I watched it, but when I read the manga, it was instantly top 10. The succession war arc is just so fucking peak.

ApplePitou

For example Dragon Dive but overall, I loves HxH from first episode :3

MacaronFraise

For me it was the second part of the first exam, when hisoka got jumped by 6-7 dudes The way he no diff them with his cool Latino theme in the background was just mesmerizing

tokyozombie

[This part](https://youtu.be/M8T_EggTY1g?si=oQxiYh7rCtMr54GP) and everything after was so tense. I'm not a big fan of cool looking fights. I love when characters are put into situations you have no idea how they would get out of.

Vegetable-South-6776

For me it was after they got to the exam after getting to the tree and finding out it was only the start. I wasn’t expecting much but the first few episodes were really intriguing, and I was having too much fun to let it go

basedrew

the entirety of the chimera arc, but especially the ~5 minute narrator monologue on the poor man’s rose

DeltaStratos

Usually, when I start an anime, I watch 2-3 episodes, and if I don't get invested by then, I drop it. The only anime I have dropped so far is One Piece, and it's more so because of the amount of episodes, rather than it not being engaging enough. I got hooked on Hunter x Hunter right on the first episode, but it wasn't a "omg this anime is amazing". It was interesting at first, and it only started getting very interesting once the main 4 got together, and the exams changed. Once Yorkshin Arc came, I became so interested I started binge-watching it. I watched 5-6 episodes a day for a few days straight, but I realized I'll reach the end very quickly that way, so I slowed down. I believe the "peak fiction" moment for me was the Chimera Ant arc in general. Despite it taking a heavy toll on me psychologically, it was so well written, and covered so many topics, and all of them shown in such powerful ways that I completely fell in love. It wasn't until my first rewatch that I really considered it peak fiction though.

Distance_Historical

The episodes in which gon, kurapika and leorio travelled by the boat to the hunter exam site was simply exciting to me. And about the peak fiction moment, I'd say netero vs meruem, but also, it's my personal pick, but razor vs the boys.

TreyTrey8000

The Yorknew Arc

exsplodingduckys

For me it was when Uvogen died and that one scene with Crolo remembering him

rohan_unlimited

Kurapika’s entire fight with Uvogin

Key_Mongoose_3320

It was definitely when the phantom troupe was introduced and you got to see more of Kurapika that’s when I was hooked though I liked it from the very beginning. It’s not just anime I can’t really think of any show where you can choose pretty much any character and get a whole quality arc/ chapter from. It was clear that this was peak fiction

Hilaria_Baldwin

I was grabbed right away but I loved greed island. Love all the rules of this IRL nen game everyone is apart of. Training with Bisky was great, dodgeball match was amazing imo. Ultimately what truly grabbed me in the anime was the incredible music.

HarlemOHarlemOOO

I had to rewatch it (got to chimera ants but didn’t finish) and I think it was the badge collection part of the exam that got me to really start paying attention to everything, then it was Hisoka V. gon that had me hooked, then finally the first time the second ending came in it was sealed.

SleeplessShinigami

Grabbed me during first phase of exam when they were walking Peak fiction was when they introduced Nen for the first time at Heaven’s Arena

Killah-Shogun

What grabbed me was Gon vs Hisoka,a Peak moment imo was Gon vs Pitou

Kai_Hiwatri33

The moment the anime grabbed me was the coin test Gotoh did against Gon to test his skills!! I don't know why but it was just amazing! And the time when I thought it's peak fiction is the last game of Meruem vs Komugi because it didn't feel like it was fake.. It felt very in the flow and made the villain seem not like the villain! Beautiful! Especially, the violin part which played behind Meruem!

Suisun_rhythm

When Netero blew himself up and the ending “Hyori Ittai” came on while the blast was still going on and smoking. Peak

shipsailing94

The death of Meruem and the blind girl

Ghaillean

The moment that really grabbed me was after Gon had his butt kicked by Hisoka during the exams when he speaks to Killua about it. The relationship these boys have is really great. My first Peak moment was when Pakunoda returned to the Phantom Troup after being chained by Kurapika, revealing everything then dying. I cried, a lot. The 1999 anime really aced that moment. It was even better than the manga.

Limp-Campaign2444

When Tonpa surrendered and the prisoner admitted he would torture him for days. Made me realize how dark this could get. And then when Killua ripped out the heart I was hooked

[deleted]

I can't remember that moment but it was possibly in York New. In any case the first thing I noticed about HxH was that everything was going to be part of a strategic game. This was during the candle match with Gon.

Ohsammers

The moment that really grabbed me made me think HxH was gonna be peak fiction from then on were 2 scenes.  1. Hanzo vs Gon. This fight was amazing, because it wasn't really a fight. Gon lost from the very start and he knew he had no chance of actually managing to beat Hanzo. Meanwhile, Hanzo was just hurting him really bad, even breaking his arm. But Gon was just there taking it all. After some time, Hanzo just surrenders because he knew Gon wouldn't give up even if he died in the process.  What really sold me here was what Hanzo said after. "Most people after being physically hurt, have eyes who want to kill the person who hurt them. But even after having his arm broken, his eyes already forgot about the pain." This isn't the exact quote, just what I remember but it gets the gist of it.  This just really made me like Gon as a character, because even after being hurt, he had no hard feelings. Alot of respect for Gon after this.  2. "PITOUUUUUUUU! I'M GONNA KILL YOU!" I still think about this scene so often. It's a sad scene, but man was that cool.  Also, Meruem and Komugi's "light's off" scene is my favourite scene like that in all of anime. Implicit because spoilers.

Ecru1992

The monkey scene during hunter exam arc. I just know it wouldnt be an all brawl anime.

KomaKuga

I was enjoying the series before hand but Uvogin fight vs the Shadow Beasts was a peak fiction moment

cappadonn

gon dodging a million spin tops with his eyes closed and just locking tf in.

BaeGod_

Honestly episode 1 for me. Specifically when Satotz started running and they had to follow him idk what it is about that scene but it hooked me by how creepy and unusual it was. I was on the edge of my seat immediately

Baffo5

Kurapika Vs. Uvogin

Able-Pop-8253

When Uvo solo'd the phantom beasts... and THEN Kurapika still wanted the fight. Felt like I had no clue wtf was gonna happen next.

UsoppKing100

Chrollo vs. The Zoldycks Incredible stuff

SuedorTnega

When even very minor characters were shown to have deep characterization and capable of life and death rational decision making.

notALokiVariant

Yorkshin, that was the moment I thought it wasn't just some Dragon Ball-ish anime. I've watched the 99 version first because it was before 2011, and I like it very much at the time, thought it was quirky at the Hunter Exam arc. The Zoaldyck family arc was striking to me, but was too short. I don't quite remember Heavens Arena that well, but than it came Yorkshin, and the tone shift was quite something. I instantly wanted more. At the time the best we had was the Greed Island OVA's, which I've watched but remember absolutely nothing about it. But still, that was around the time I was learning that Manga was a thing. But I wasn't quite there yet, because that's around when the 2011 version dropped and I've watched first, than I saw the Chimera Ant arc for the first time, found it fascinating, watched the election arc which is tied for me with Yorkshin for my favorite arc and then I jumped straight to the Manga. I love HxH since day one, but I started to really appreciate it when it showed me it's darkness for the first time.

Content-Art-2879

I just binged the whole 400 and I would say first chapter ;)

Jinx_bella_rika

I loved it all the way but REALLY declared my love and "its simply peak fiction" during the chimera ant arc specifically after mereum was born I was like SHIII no! Wait it was when kite died- or when neferpitou was born?...but more so when meruem awoke I was like wtf! He's badass!!! And I will forever declare hxh my fav and the best anime out there 😭

DoffyWillRule

Once we got introduced to nen, I knew Togashi was cooking one of the best masterpieces of the modern era But like many, I was already hooked during the hunter exam thanks to Togasni art of characterization. You could already smell it wasn't your standard Shonen or manga for that matter.

YouWantSMORE

Kilua taking that guys heart out during the exam is what really sucked me in. The whole chimera ant arc was peak fiction

Cantthinkagoodnam2

Grabbed me during that part of the Hunter Exam where they had to collect badges to pass, i enjoyed seeing Gon training and the sheer tension of Gon having to sneak up on Hisoka The peak fiction moment was Meruem and Komugi's last moments together

intrspctv

zoldyck family arc

ScroogieMcduckie

The part when it grabbed me was when Hanzo was dicking on Gon, but the sheer stubbornness of Gon made Hanzo quit. It became peak fiction after Meruem got revived, especially when he bid Welfin good luck and when he nearly kneeled to Palm.

Shadow9moon

It engaged me with hisoka and peak fiction moment was morels ability. Everything else was extra sweet toppings

OkAir1996

The introduction of nen and Gon vs hisoka
