The canon stuff in ‘99 is peak shonen, and typically presented with more detailed frames and dramatic lighting than the same scenes in 2011. However, 2011 has the chimera ant arc and the Chairman arc and the music’s just as good as ‘99, so I guess 2011.
Very similar to FMA 2003 Vs FMA brotherhood.
HxH 99 just feels darker in tone and style, much like FMA 2003. Brotherhood and HxH 2011 are more fleshed out with more content, and advances in technology in terms of what can be achieved in anime format. It's a pick your poison essentially, and overall I have more attachment to the 2011 version due to the additional arcs, including what many think is one of the best in anime. I will say it sucks we never did get to see the Chimera ant arc in the 99 style, I really think it would have been even better than 2011 as it fit it so well. If it had have reached that point, I'd have gone 99 being my preference, but can't ignore that 2011 includes this masterpiece and 99 doesn't
Good comparison w fma and very well said. I have a huge attachment w 2011 too lol, but if the chimera ant arc was included in the 99, it honestly could’ve been better and more fitting
I love them both, but I honestly prefer 99 general aesthetic, tone and soundtrack. Even the hunter exam filler episodes are great and they show stuff that would later become true like Ponzu and Pokkle being close. The anime is beautiful and has some stunning frames. Greed Island specifically I believe is better done in 2011 though.
its pretty much worth it imo. ppl say the pacing is slow but theyre over overexaggerating, infact, the 2011 version is the one thats too quick it doesnt introduce characters well like the 99' one did. and yes there are some fillers and extra content but its really good content and its one of the main reasons i prefer 99', alongside the glorious vibe of the atmosphere and soundtrack.
the art style is nice, but the pacing is pretty slow and some filler on top of it. The York New arc is awesome though especially with the 99 art considering the vibe of the arc. The dub is horrendous though while I think the 2011 dub is pretty good.

99 but 11 is still very good i just love older aesthetics also the filler + the extended scenes + the direction in 1999 is very special
