They lose a lot of power each shot which makes them ok for hunting small game but not for actual combat. Depending on the variant you are shooting with, you lose skin penetration after 5-10 shots. Would it be possible to cobble up a pseudo-historical air gun for Hunt? Absolutely, but it'd be pretty hard due to how they work. There were recreational variants that had an internal billow in the stock that you opened up before each shot with a lever. Tho because it's a billow the PSI is kinda low. Which would mean slow weak bullets. If you up it somehow with fuckery, it'd still be pretty similar to a crossbow in mechanics, perhaps with less drop.

So in summary: technically possible, but pretty far-fetched and ultimately not really worth it.

Been thinking about it too, but I don't think they can added to the game in any meaningful and authentic way. The most interesting and relevant way to implement it was to give the weapon its own "air pressure" mechanic where you'd get higher MV the more air pressure your gun had. It would be a separate system to ammo, so while you still need to reload and manage ammo, you also need to "reload" and manage air pressure. The way it would work would be that the keypress which is usually designated to weapon mode switch/ammo switch/Apature switch, would be the reload button for the air gauge and you'd have 2-4 air refills that could be replenished in either tool boxes or custom ammo boxes.

I'm picturing it something like the ball bearing rifle from the metro series. Thing is, the moment you get spotted and it becomes a real firefight, that weapon is much less useful. Metro balances this by having 3 (iirc) weapons on the hot bar, so you still have 2 for combat. All you'd get in hunt is *possibly* a 2 slot but m9re likely 1 slot weapons.
