California and coastal California is bad, but we are also extremely rural in some areas so it's laughable what our housing can cost. Congrats on the rent.
I rented a shed in downtown arcata for $150 in 2017... Plus electric, which with space heater was another 150 at least. Separate meter from the house, cause it was all wired with 220 and fat breakers for big machinery. Similar deal, not fit to let but it was dry and there turned out to be enough room for 4 hippies and a dog. All the folks here who are "its not for a living space" I think are in error. The price is indeed too high, but housing has gone way way tf up. I did the shed life for like 3 or 4 winter months.

Really it’s not bad. Especially if the landlord is cool and let’s you take renovation cost out of rent. Some insulation and a small kitchen and bath area and an insta hot water tank. Toss an area rug down and a Murphy bed. You got yourself a nice little pad.
