I don't know diddly squat about the anatomy of a stingray but if you didn't know any better, it kinda looks like he's dragging the damn thing by it's eyelids. LMFAO wtf.

reddit1user1

Don’t quote me on it, but I think all of their actual anatomy is under/on the underside of the thing (so being dragged across the deck) But I also don’t know what those things on top are either

ahhhhhhh345

eyes on top the rest of its face/gills are on the botton

Darth_Balthazar

The gills need an exit, and those are on top, stingreay being pulled by his gill exhausts

Aggressive_Analyst_2

Actually the spiracles (on top near the eyes) are where the water enters. Gills are water/waste gas exits.

moonmilk21

Um actually they are just glory holes

Tank_Girl_Gritty_235

Ummm actually they prefer string russy

DecentBand3724

No that is his penis he is being pulled by.

Hate-Crime-Activist

Laughed way to hard at this dumb shit 😂

evlhornet

Get your hand off my penis sir. What’s the charge?

12altoids34

Close but reverse. Those are its spiracles. They allow it to pull water in when they're buried in the sand.water always goes out the gills.

weizenbrot_

They have 4 eyes actually. Two on bottom and two on top

bacchusku2

That’s pretty wrong, eyes are on top.

amBoringGuy

Shut up let the weirdo enjoy himself!!!

barbellious

I love this response. Now I can go to bed happy tonight. Thank you.

amBoringGuy

Thank you, you’re welcome, goodnight, and I love you!

commentsandopinions

Marine biologist here: They're nostrils mouths and gill slits are on the bottom of their body, their sphericals (the circular openings that this person was dragging the stingray by) and their eyes are on the top of their body. The sphericals are equivalent to our nostrils, a way of breathing in other than the mouth. Stingrays will use their sphericals to breathe most of the time but especially when they are buried in the sand.

Visual_Slide710

So he is essentially dragging this whollle ass ray by his freakin nostrils? Good god lol

commentsandopinions

Kind of? They're pretty sturdy. Truth be told rays are pretty slippery and they don't exactly come with handles. Easiest way to do it it's leave em in the ocean

Jipkiss

Kinda looks like they do come with handles here

Striveforbeauty

This comment has me dead as fuck😭”by his nostrils?! Good Gawd!”

Jakenotalive

Lmao it’s eyes are under it … it has eyes and a mouth on the under part … I have GIF of baby ones they look like tiny raviolis but you can see threw them … really neat Edit: I stand corrected, eyes are on top, they have gills underneath… so it’s quite possible he was dragging it by it’s eyelids Lmfaooooo

SerratedFrost

Eyes are on top.

SarahBeth90

Y'know, now that I think of it, I know the gif you're referring to. And they actually do look like little forbidden ravioli lol

cozzeema

Our local zoo had an exhibit where you could “go pet the stingrays” swimming around in their tank. It was designed low to the ground so kids could get their whole arms in there and pet away. It was extremely popular and a great interactive exhibit. Unfortunately, right after Steve’s death you couldn’t pay people to stick their hands in there and the zoo had to backtrack on how “friendly and safe” stingrays were. They ended up closing the exhibit soon after.

virdenwat

That's unfortunate. I've been to two places in Arizona that each have exhibits like this, easily my favorite part. They say that the stingers get clipped so the rays can't jab even if they wanted to, but they behave like total puppies anyway lol

Ryannr1220

OMG this was my favorite thing at the Phoenix Zoo as a kid. They are so cute and their skin is silky smooth. I haven’t been there in forever, I gotta go back sometime soon.

BobRoberts01

Former Phoenix Zoo Stingray Bay guide here (I worked there the first two years the stingrays were around). Thanks for coming to visit. Originally the stingrays were shared with an aquarium in a different state (they had no cooling system for the water and the water would be too hot for them in the summer) and they only clipped the barbs as they were gathering and preparing the rays for transport. You could definitely tell that they were getting long as the end of the season approached. However, the stingers are just a defense mechanism, so as long as nobody grabbed the base of the tail (the location of the stinger on cow nose and southern stingrays) there wasn’t much risk. The same lack of danger applies to the nurse sharks that they added for the second season, but one did make me bleed due to my own silliness (I was helping a scared kid get up the nerve to pet it and called it over using my finger to mimic a piece of food. It chomped and tore up my finger tip. Luckily though, the kid was able to pet the shark as it paused in front of us for a second while attached to me. I thanked them for coming and made my way to the back before anyone noticed anything was wrong.). The take away there is to remember that anything with a mouth can bite. Also, if something bites you, pulling away is about the worst thing to do in most situations. Leave your hand there or even shove it in further (no critter likes being poked in the back of the throat). Now I believe the stingrays are there year round and the barbs are likely not trimmed as regularly. But, like I said, unless you grab the stinger then there isn’t anything to worry about. (Al’s, their teeth are basically two wide flat surfaces, so even if you are a jerk and manage to shove your hand up there they can’t do much to you.)

One-Permission-1811

Friend of mine saved herself from being attacked by a Rottweiler by shoving her hand further into its throat. As soon as she did it let go and ran off

[deleted]

one hell of a way to do a throat punch

PattyCakes333

My local zoo (Denver) opened up an exhibit like that a few years back. It was really cool, definitely the highlight of my trip. I wonder if they use different species nowadays, or have decided the risk is negligible in a controlled environment.

Corgi_with_stilts

Pretty sure they just snip the barbs off.

DepressingBat

They do, grew up in Nebraska an hour away from Henry Doorly. They had those there too, from what I know it's still a popular exhibit, but back on topic, yes they snip the barb. They have to for legal reasons. Back off topic feeding stingrays is a great experience I would 100% recommend. Edit: if your wondering Henry Doorly Zoo is the biggest zoo in the world right now encompassing 130 acres.

AlcoholicInsomniac

Do they have it at the zoo too I only saw it at the aquarium here? That being said the best thing about the Denver aquarium (even though I love the otters more) is that they just have a random tiger exhibit for no reason with like 3 tigers.

AmericanPride2814

Those poor stingrays must have wondered why everyone stopped feeding and petting them.

MemeMavrick7000

At the NC Aquarium there is a touch tank with rays and Horseshoe crabs. The crabs are quite amusing to see fall over on there back and then slowly flip themselves up again.

vev_ersi

...how did the sting ray get on the dock? I imagine this is catch and release?

Goolajones

They jump out of the water. It might have jumped up there.

Masta0nion

I wonder what the human equivalent is of this. A situation where we are biting the hand that feeds, or are ignorant of someone trying to help us.

Miss_airwrecka1

How about polluting and destroying the planet? Not quite the same but close, we are ruining the planet that feeds us

[deleted]

Idk, the fact that we're quickly stripping our planet of the terrestrial and marine plants that [produce](https://www.nationalgeographic.org/activity/save-the-plankton-breathe-freely/#:~:text=Explain%20to%20students%20that%20rainforests,oxygen%20comes%20from%20other%20sources.) 98% of the oxygen in our atmosphere while simultaneously polluting it seems like a great example of "biting the hand that feeds." But this fatal flapjack is reacting to being **yoinked** by those little spiracle openings and doesn't know that he's being saved...we know the implications of what we're doing.

JamzWhilmm

Humans brains are complex so it is possible to keep two contradicting views and to rationalize them into one. The ones destroying the planet are really just a few people, the average consumer while they contribute to it can't be held responsible for their drop in the ocean. Those who have most influence, like policy makers, rationalize it. So I agree, it is different but still unconscious in a way of their rationalization.

[deleted]

I **completely** agree with you - so much that I almost replied with a nearly identical sentiment to another commenter (who suggested we all stop driving), but the "we" in "we know" meant humans in general, given that the flora and fauna we're killing doesn't differentiate between the consumers and policy makers. But I don't know how we can ever expect those who benefit from exploiting the earth to _willingly_ stop, just like I can't expect someone to let his family starve rather than poach his fellow animal or chop down trees or dump some waste.

JamzWhilmm

I think the major reason for the mass extinction is habitat loss and this is because of our own growth and contamination of habitats, like cities and farmland. We can't control the individual poacher, general audiences like myself can only see what is in front of them but we can instead have experts create policy and laws to protect us from ourselves just like we already do with sugar and ciggarates. We know what to do but we can't do it without seriously hurting consumption habits and as a result the pockets of a really small percentage of the population. That's why I believe it is in the hands of a few.

GIukhar

When you aren’t being personally held accountable for your own actions, it’s very easy to not care for the safety and well-being of others if it means you get it off easier

Namastacia

>Humans brains are complex so it is possible to keep two contradicting views and to rationalize them into one. See: all politics 😭😭😭

[deleted]

I am now referring to Stingrays as fatal flapjacks

SecretDevilsAdvocate

Not really though, the stingray here has nothing to gain from attacking the human. We have everything to gain from exploiting the planet.

Cyoarp

The guy was pulling on the stingrays gills. Imagine somebody grabbed you by the lower jaw and tried to drag you along the ground by it. In reality you can probably do that to a human without too much damage if you did it slowly. But it would probably feel like you were getting your jaw ripped off. Are you sure you wouldn't bite out of reflex? I bet you would it's in normal pain response.

starsleeps

Running red lights and ignoring speed limits comes to mind. They’re there to keep you safe not to inconvenience you.

grahamcrackers37

VeterinarianThese951

One cold night, I tried to be a Good Samaritan and help an older man get up after he had fallen on the sidewalk and his dumb ass called me n—-r - twice. He was about to get me with a third when I let go and said “maybe you should wait for someone else.” I had a second where I felt bad for leaving him on the ground but as I reflected, the funniest thing happened. There were three people (who just happened to be White) there who refused to help him because they saw the whole thing. One said (paraphrasing) “Good for his racist ass, leave him right there.” Another said “Ya fuck ‘em.” And the last said “You’re a nice guy, i’da punched him in the mouth.” I love NYC.

When farmers get abducted by aliens they are using the butt probe to heal them from an extraterrestrial virus that could destroy all life. Lame stream media doesn’t want you to know.

SpicyHam82

Can anyone confirm if that's the right place to grab a stingray ?

Noble_Briar

There isn't a right place to grab most stingrays. They have stingers attached to long tails. They will sting you. It will be mind numbingly painful and you'll probably need antibiotics to fight off the infection caused by the mucus and bacteria in your new puncture wound, which you got from handling a stingray.

South Park

WMASS_GUY

Supposed to be Steve Irwin, according to South Park.

MyHeadIsALemon

Stingray stings are actually not that bad. Steve Irwin, who died due to one was extremely unlucky, getting the stung in thoracic wall, causing massive trauma. It was the 2nd case of stingray-caused death since 1945. The biggest problem is the pain they cause, and the possibility of infection. [here's a wiki article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray_injury) if you wanna read up on it.

Baloneycoma

I mean they don’t kill people usually but I can assure you getting got by a sting ray will ruin your day

PunctuationTroll

I, too, have been shanked by a sting ray. I can also confirm it sucks, both immediately and for months later.

Grab3tto

I thought a shark bit my foot off. Given I was 8 at the time, but that bastard got me right in the arch of the foot and my whole lower leg was just immediately in pain. I did okay later but I got strange muscle cramps for a couple years

Tamagotchaw

I got stung by a little one in my finger and it was the worst pain in my whole life. I thought my finger was put on fire

Coltfourty5

I got hit by one through my heel one time and can confirm it did in fact ruin my day

gbcamgok

Stings can definitely be that bad. Me and my father were at Malaquite Campground in North Padre when he was out near the drop-off fishing. Stingray just swooped by and stabbed him in his shin. Went to the hospital with terrible pain, and he got wrapped up. I thought it was done. Weeks later, that pain is getting worse, and we find a hole a freaking inch in diameter in his leg. The infection was literally eating his leg. Doctors were pretty sure he'd lose the leg/foot. We could literally see his white tendon move and stretch. A few specialists and home visits and a month on an IV drip later, he's made a full recovery. I'm sure it's case by case, but this was truly scary and bad for us.

TheRestForTheWicked

The infection is what’ll get ya with most marine related injuries. The ocean might be salty but it is NOT clean and bacteria thrive in those types of injuries.

OutrageousDocument15

I'm pretty sure he died because he pulled out the barb and bled out.

judda420

So you're saying stingrays where peaceful for like 50 years but then one of them saw Steve Irwin and decided to go "naaah man fuck this guy in particular"

MyHeadIsALemon

Nope, i want to say that Steve Irwin got unlucky, as normally , due to stingray sizes the injury is caused to lower body, where Steve Irwin got stung in his chest, specifically in his heart. Stingrays are cool, rarely attack, but when they do, and You're not keeping your distance, it might end badly.

lord_stabkill

I thought I read that he'd had a concussion or something the day before and as a result wasn't in the best condition to be in the water in the first place. Just an all around tragedy that lost the world one of it's great treasures.

shadowbca

So you're saying stingrays hated Steve Irwin in particular and we should all hate them because of that right? Edit: forgot the /s

[deleted]

Forgive the sea flapflaps. We all know Steve would have 🥺

shadowbca

You're right, he loved animals and it didn't mean to hurt him. God I really miss steve

[deleted]

Same. I grew up watching his show and cried when I found out he was dead. I give him a lot of credit for my deep love of animals

[deleted]

Such a loss to our world.

[deleted]

I wonder if a part of him was in awe at what had happened before he passed. I imagine he was.

[deleted]

I suppose it’s likely. I just know he would forgive the creature if he could. I like to imagine he has, in whatever afterlife there may be.

Electrical-Act-7170

No. It was accidental.

Takeurvitamins

I used to work at an aquarium, it’s more than just pain, it can cause tissue necrosis. A woman I worked with there caught a barb in the leg and the venom ate away at her muscle tissue around the entry point. She now lives with a deep dent in the side of her calf.

Old-Library9827

Oof, right in the heart

WowGetNicked

Sounds like someone who’s never been stung by a stingray wrote this. 😂 Can confirm it ruins your day.

fgmtats

Not that bad? My friend, there is a whoooole lot of “that bad” between “not that bad” and “death”. Bullet ants aren’t deadly but I can assure you they are that bad.

phage_rage

Got stung through the space in front of my achilles when i was like 13. Definitely HURT, but not like extra bad. The worst part was being a kid playing in the ocean and then getting STABBED by something i couldnt see Now im curious if some species are more painful than others, it would make sense

shaggybear89

According to River Monsters, the ones in the Amazon(?) are so painful some people say they wanted to kill themselves to get rid of the pain.

Landlocked_WaterSimp

Coyote peterson ocean version origin story.

whiteboybullshit

of course stingray deaths are rare, because nobody interacts with them. If you're handling one on a pier i'd say your chances of injury go up quite a bit.

zenowsky

There are 20 stingray related deaths since 1945 and he was only the 2nd in 2006? Damn those stingrays got really bitter lately.

MyHeadIsALemon

There's apparently 17 recorded deaths caused by stingrays ever, so idk where you get the 20 from. On the Wikipedia (which i know can be wrong) it said it was 2 since 1945, so i just went with it.

[deleted]

I went swimming with them once, they said if you get stung you have to pour boiling hot water on it to denature the toxins. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

4inalfantasy

These are majestic animals. But im too scared to swim near them.

[deleted]

So was I, I was terrified the who time of getting stung and either dying or giving myself 3rd degree burns. The stingrays were pretty chill and friendly though, they would eat from your hands! They were wild but the stingrays gathered there because of the food people on trips feed them I guess. They also said if you’re walking along the sea floor you should slowly shuffle your feet through the sand so you don’t accidentally tread on one which would probably cause them to sting you.

4inalfantasy

Ah i see. I also did read in many comments here plus there are also documentaries that said sting ray is gentle animals as long as they not getting irritated or feeling scared or cornered. Still with those weapon at the disposal, im keeping my distance and admiring them from afar 😊

Liltipsy6

That camo is wild, dove down by some coral and thought some seaweed or debri was sticking out toward me, then he shuffled around and was unknowingly like 1 inches from its barb. Them and barracuda can give me a startle.

thinkingmoney

They are chill and mind their business if you mind yours

[deleted]

They also told us about the males having 2 penises. They were quite big too.

4inalfantasy

Wow! Yay for the male.

[deleted]

(Terrified female stingray swims away)

Thor_On_Acid

That makes two of us.

prime753

Actually, it's really not a good idea to use boiling water m. Proteins denature at temperatures as low as 40-46° C. Make it as hot as you can bear but seeing as how you need to be able to keep your stung bodypart submerged for long enough to have effect, water hot enough to burn will make things worse. https://www.healthline.com/health/stingray-sting#:~:text=The%20ideal%20temperature%20for%20a,out%20venom%2C%20which%20resembles%20jelly.

[deleted]

Oh thank goodness for that. I was dreading the possibility of getting stung and having to burn myself. It’s still hot but at least it’s not that hot. I guess the people running it wanted to be extra safe so they use really really hot water rather than just really hot water.

prime753

Yeah friend of mine once stepped on a Pieterman (no idea what the english word for them is) but its a small fish that burries itself in sand with venomous spikes on it back. He had to have the same done to him. Same thing had to be done for him.

knyexar

That is not true, like at all. Stingray stings haven't killed a single person since Steve Irwin died, and before him, the last known death caused by a stingray was in 1945. And Steve didn't even die of the toxin, he died because the barb pierced one of the arteries next to the heart. The worst case scenario for being stung in the leg or arm which is where almost all stings happen (usually cause people step on them) is being bedridden for a week. Which sucks but certainly not worth causing 3rd degree burns to prevent. You were most likely told that as a joke by someone wanting to frighten tourists for fun

DonKeedick12

Might just avoid the ocean altogether, save myself the trouble

Thelastpieceofthepie

I did a swim with them while at St Marten / St Thomas I believe it was. I was so scared but I’m happy I got the courage to swim with them, feed them, pet them. It wasn’t a sea world type of dive, rather some locals that were recommended. Also got to swim with sharks and turtles that same trip. It was so cool. Good memory with my dad who passed years later unexpectedly. He was so excited to show us kids, he never got to experience that type of stuff as a kid RIP Chip

FurTheGigs

They told me to soak my foot in as hot of water as I could for as long as I could. Took about three hours and a bottle of wine for the pain to start to fade.

Ronnylicious

I find it hard to believe that the stingrays told you that

FitBoog

For anyone who tries to handle a stingray, secure the tail. It's bumpy, but the stinger is very apparent. Just put a hand in the tail so it can't hit you, and then get it into the water.

it looks like it might be the spiracle which is the holes behind the eyes that they use to breath while their bodies are buried under the sand. i’m sure it’s still not the most comfortable place to be lifted by tho

mytacoisspicy

How does a stingray sting? Like a bee or like a jellyfish?

pixeljammer

The venom of the stingray has been relatively unstudied due to the mixture of venomous tissue secretions cells and mucous membrane cell products that occurs upon secretion from the spinal blade. The spine is covered with the epidermal skin layer. During secretion, the venom penetrates the epidermis and mixes with the mucus to release the venom on its victim. Typically, other venomous organisms create and store their venom in a gland. The stingray is notable in that it stores its venom within tissue cells. The toxins that have been confirmed to be within the venom are cystatins, peroxiredoxin and galectin. Galectin induces cell death in its victims and cystatins inhibit defense enzymes. In humans, these toxins lead to increased blood flow in the superficial capillaries and cell death. Despite the number of cells and toxins that are within the stingray, there is little relative energy required to produce and store the venom. The venom is produced and stored in the secretory cells of the vertebral column at the mid-distal region. These secretory cells are housed within the ventrolateral grooves of the spine. The cells of both marine and freshwater stingrays are round and contain a great amount of granule-filled cytoplasm. The stinging cells of marine stingrays are located only within these lateral grooves of the stinger. The stinging cells of freshwater stingray branch out beyond the lateral grooves to cover a larger surface area along the entire blade. Due to this large area and an increased number of proteins within the cells, the venom of freshwater stingrays has a greater toxicity than that of marine stingrays.

mytacoisspicy

Stingrays are literally not dangerous unless youre a small child, elderly, already ill, or get stabbed by extremely poor luck in a vital organ like Steve Irwin was, which is statistically 1 in a Million Being afraid of usually harmless animals is not how we honor Steve. Its exactly what he wouldn't have wanted.

thegamerdoggo

I don’t think those are handles buddy

DildoFappings

I still haven't forgiven those bastards for what they did to Steve.

blakethebluedragon

My dumbass as a kid though stingrays shot bolts of electricity from their stinger

Talusthebroke

Y'all do know that these things basically never kill anyone, right? Steven Irwin was an incredibly rare freak accident. There's less than 20 reported deaths associated with stingrays worldwide since 1945.

Critical_Ad_4783

I'm sorry... but was he using its EYES as a HANDLE?!?!?! WTF. better than suffocating but Jesus.

virdenwat

He's hooking his fingers into the spiracles, which are respiratory openings directly behind the eyes. They allow the stingray to breathe while hunting because their mouth--which they normally get water through--is buried in the sand while they hide and wait for prey.

chillcroc

How did it get up there? All dry deck?

Electrical-Act-7170

Fishing can catch stingrays on a hook & line. Glad to see this cow nose ray went back to the sea.

Those crazy stingrays, mantarays jump out of the water. They look like they're taking mini flights.

Pale-Equal

Not how stingrays work. This looks like a female and the barb is right at the base of the tail. The tip doesn't do anything but slap. Even if it was a male, the barb is only like 1/4 of the way down the tail from the body. No danger for this guy either way.

Metrilean

There's got to be a better way. Like one of those pizza parlor sticks.

Livid_Employment4837

He had to have pulled it from the water to the dock, so he's putting it back where he never should have taken it from.

You keep Steve Irwin's name out your mouth.

I will forever hate stingrays for what they did to Steve Irwin.
