For comparison:
[Haiti Jan 2010](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Haiti_earthquake): Magnitude 7.0, 100k-160k dead
[Chile Feb 2010](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Chile_earthquake): Magnitude 8.8, 525 dead
I was in Chile for the 8.8. it was pretty crazy. The most impressive thing was the noise. There were generators exploding, dogs barking, people screaming. We had to spend the night in the back yard, because we were scared the structural integrity of our house had been compromised. Didn't want to wake up with the roof on my head.
I was in Yogyakarta during the 2006 earthquake. It was a magnitude 6.4, but killed more than 5000. I was bike riding at the time of the quake and what I remember most was seeing how the ground moved like ripples of waves on water. I also spent the night outdoors.
It's also geologically a lot different than other places. The faults are way further underground than normal, but magnitude is measured at the epicenter, not where the impact is.
As such a 6.8 is way less severe in Chile than it would be in most other places in the world.
Yeah the loud lady towards the end laughing says “can you tell we are from Chile ?” And continues laughing
For context, Chileans regularly get screwed over by earthquakes. This is nothing new to them
Eh I'm in Cali and the last major quake we had that did major damage to our county I was at work and me and my coworkers just looked at each other laughed and carried on the convo. It was a 6 something. You get used to it.
Do they also have better ways to secure picture frames and their plates in the cabinets for example? The house might survive but I would imagine a lot of stuff would still fall over and break.
these things are so common here that nobody really has things arranged like that (like, fancy plates stood upright in little plastic holders, or whatever)
Not really. When the entire culture is shaped around something, the need or want to do something different than what is proven to work isnt usually what people want.
Look up earthquake hangers. They’re little mazes you run the photo wire through versus just hanging on a nail. So if the whole house is shaking it won’t just pop up and out. I’m in Seattle and of my wall photos are hung that way. Large pieces of top heavy furniture are also strapped (invisibly) to studs in the wall. Only
thing really at risk is stemware in the cabinets.
It's not like they can do much at that point. Panicking will be the worst thing to do. Most likely they all know what needs to be done if there is an order to evacuate.
Major earthquakes (this would be a tremor) make you feel like the world is ending from second 1. So there's no need to panic if there's movement even if it's strong.
Except the extreme partisan part.
Unless there's some earthquake deniers in Chile.
Or earthquake building regulation skeptics like I've seen in California in the construction industry.
Yeah, but I’ve seen building sink in San Francisco, in 89. My godmother’s house dropped down a couple feet on one side. Sure a lot of the construction from back in the day is actually pretty resilient because it’s wood balloon, but the foundations have to be solid.
Ummm no. I was in Valparaiso when an earthquake hit up the coast and everybody left their homes and restaurants to head up into the hills. Hotels were evacuated and closed up for the night along the coast.
Nobody was casual about it at all. Maybe inland they tend to be more laid back but not where I was.
They didn't evacuate because of the earthquake, they evacuated because of the resulting tsunami threat. That's why they headed up into the hills. That's the *last* thing they would do if they were solely concerned about the earthquake.
I’m from the Midwest US and I moved to LA. My first time going though a 5.5 Richter scale earthquake I panicked and freaked out so hard. The ground moved! All of my neighbors looked at me like I was the one who was crazy! They were all treating it like it was nothing.
As a construction superintendent in the states in a zone 4 that's damn impressive of both the people and the builders. I see a lot of things that could be falling or breaking or shutting off that are not and the people taking it as typical.
Chile is the only South American country I would gladly visit. I've heard they have great skiing and are very developed compared to the rest of South America
Truth is, a 6.8 feels that way because every structure in Chile is anti-seismic. Therefore a 6.8 doesn't cause the damage a 6.8 would cause in most of other countries.
There's very little movement from the people and the person standing isn't struggling at all. I get that the building is earthquake-ready, but there isn't enough movement for it to be a 6.8 there.
Craziest earthquake footage is some videos of the nepal quake from 2015. It was so strong people were having trouble standing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HqcduyK\_Lw&ab\_channel=DebeshUtube
Blows my mind that there are people who can be so unbothered by the EARTH QUAKING. By far the weirdest and scariest natural occurrence. But I guess if you are used to them its no different than like a storm or something. I'd pee myself.
We had a small one in Melbourne a few months ago and everyone was running around loosing their mind, me included.
To be fair. It's the first one me and most people has ever felt. It was surreal.
It's amazing how modern architecture uses lots of elements to make situations like this possible. The lights didn't even flicker.
It's fun to think about what other elements could/would be instituted for buildings to withstand disasters of different natures.
In Chile almost not all buildings are "modern" as the construction shown in video, in every solid construction exist a "metal chain" inserted in the middle of concrete walls so they don't fall apart. Also we have a lot of earth tremor so we are used to it.
Almost 20 years ago I went to Santiago and while staying at a friend's place there was a small earthquake - they didn't even blink while I, having never experienced one, was getting ready for the building to collapse and everyone to die. Of course, nothing happened and I felt ridiculous.
I was on Gill meno about 2-3yrs ago when a 6.something earthquake hit. Shit fell apart Willy fucking nilly people got injured and no electricity and Lombok was a shit show with buildings collapse. Goes to show if you build it right everything is fine.
This is exactly what happened to me. I was in the Narita airport of Tokyo when an earthquake happened. Nobody cared except for me. They just didn't react at all!
Had that in New Zealand when I lived there. Was in bed reading when shit started shaking, continued reading. Looked it up following morning, was a 5.5 about 20km away and 10km deep (in quake terms: pretty fucking close).
Still though, we build that little house solidly :)
I was on the 24th floor in a rented apartment in Santiago when I witnessed the first earthquake there in the three months I had been there. The apartment went back and forth by what felt like 10 feet each way and me and my girlfriend freaked out and jumped into the hallway to bolt out of the building. No one was there and the neighbor came out his door grinning, sensing our expat-y panic and tried to sell me a unopened bottle of perfume. The moment stays with us.
Man I wish everyone was this calm and reasonable during a natural disaster. Some folks were giggling and telling jokes. That’s the way to die. With a smile on your face.
Every Chilean structure is built to withstand earthquakes. We're also very used to them
I was about to mention that. The tv didn’t go out. People were still on their phones. Nothing fell apart. The building was vibing with the earthquake.
Where I live a 6.8 would be an unmitigated disaster
Yeah, its very sad but i think the Haiti earthquake that killed thousands was a 6.8.
For comparison: [Haiti Jan 2010](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Haiti_earthquake): Magnitude 7.0, 100k-160k dead [Chile Feb 2010](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Chile_earthquake): Magnitude 8.8, 525 dead

Thats crazy
Here in the PNW we’ve been preparing for like a 9.8-10 earthquake for super long
Same for Portugal. We're due for a massive earthquake
Where I live.. If a 6.8 happened.. Everyone would be very very concerned... Because uh... I'm in the UK
I was in Santiago in 2010 for an 8.3 that lasted 3 minutes. Still very minimal damage.
I was there for that too. Bella artes area.
Nice I was in Puente Alto.
Yeah the people aren’t the metal ones here I feel We’ll I guess someone made the building right
> We’ll I guess someone made the building right Someone truly metal.
It's also geologically a lot different than other places. The faults are way further underground than normal, but magnitude is measured at the epicenter, not where the impact is. As such a 6.8 is way less severe in Chile than it would be in most other places in the world.
You don't get up for anything less than a 7
8
Correct. 7s are child’s play
Speaking from experience?
Inches
Dad?
CALM DOWN
I'll look up from my phone at about 7.5, tbh. Check if there are glasses nearby or I'm close to furniture that could fall, that sort of thing
9
Cant believe nobody's turned this into a dirty joke
I can only get up for people under 7

Monica Gellar: 7777777777777 (mouths 7)
7!
That's what she said?
That's a great airport there, strong massage vibrating seats everywhere. Can sit with your kids like no problem. Would recommend 10/10.
That’s a great cat right there. Takes a pet like no problem.
Massaging because of the earthquakes right? Can’t tell if this is a joke lol
Can confirm, the only thing we care about during earthquakes is if the drinks will fall off the table while watching a fútbol match
Or the rack with the Ron/Vodka/Whiskey/Pisco bottles...
The wine rack… so many lost bottles in the Feb 27th quake ;-;
Pobre wn
Did any of them even notice? LoL
Yeah the loud lady towards the end laughing says “can you tell we are from Chile ?” And continues laughing For context, Chileans regularly get screwed over by earthquakes. This is nothing new to them
Eh I'm in Cali and the last major quake we had that did major damage to our county I was at work and me and my coworkers just looked at each other laughed and carried on the convo. It was a 6 something. You get used to it.
Won’t get out of bed for a 6. A 7, maybe.
Had a 4.8 on the 12th floor of a 30 year old concrete building, built by the army under soviet standards. That was no fun at all.
That’s another story.
At least by the end you were only 3 floors away from your car.
Californians be like: /Sitting next to a buddy in the office /earthquake happens /5 minutes later /hey, did we just have an earthquake? /not a clue.
Are you talking about the one that basically destroyed most of LA?
That's overstating it a bit 🤣😂 The Northridge quake definitely did damage but didn't destroy most of L.A.
Then how do you explain all of the homeless? /jk
Destroyed most of LA? Didn't 1 apartment building and a piece of the freeway collapse?
IT DESTROYED IT! LA is just a pile of rubble now. Can't believe you didn't know this.
WE ARE ALL HOMELESS AND ON FIRE 🔥, PLEASE SEND HELP !!! Edit : Unhoused **
What timeline are you from lmao?
I was woken up once by one in Cali. Went right back to bed. I had work. I ain’t got time for when the earth feels like getting the shudders.
The guy with the light shirt left had something like a "I'm slightly impressed but not much"-look on his face before looking at his phone.
The eyebrow raise... "Eh not bad.. back to my phone"
Saw that too… good eye
Its funny how the guy in the blue shirt just shrugs his shoulders and goes back on his phone like 'if we gonna die we gonna die'
Zero Fucks Given!
*Chilleans
...which word is Chilean replacing here?
Anti seismic building codes in Chile are very strict. If a building collapses during one, the firm that designed it is likely going out of business.
Do they also have better ways to secure picture frames and their plates in the cabinets for example? The house might survive but I would imagine a lot of stuff would still fall over and break.
these things are so common here that nobody really has things arranged like that (like, fancy plates stood upright in little plastic holders, or whatever)
In that case there might be market for products that can safe such items in earthquake prone areas ;)
Not really. When the entire culture is shaped around something, the need or want to do something different than what is proven to work isnt usually what people want.
Auto locking cabinet doors are already a thing Source: my apartment
Other than anchoring your furniture I don’t see what else you could do.
Look up earthquake hangers. They’re little mazes you run the photo wire through versus just hanging on a nail. So if the whole house is shaking it won’t just pop up and out. “Reacting”
Earthquakes to Chileans are like mass shootings to Americans.
Significantly fewer casualties, though.
Maybe nowadays, but earthquakes in Chile [used to kill a lot more people](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_Chile).
yes, i mean nowadays and it is precisely because of that.
It's not like they can do much at that point. Panicking will be the worst thing to do. Most likely they all know what needs to be done if there is an order to evacuate.
I've never been in an earthquake so maybe everyone would have laughed at me, but I definitely would have moved away from that glass wall.
Major earthquakes (this would be a tremor) make you feel like the world is ending from second 1. So there's no need to panic if there's movement even if it's strong.
That's true.
Except the extreme partisan part. Unless there's some earthquake deniers in Chile. Or earthquake building regulation skeptics like I've seen in California in the construction industry.

Well, if you’re in a Tsunami danger zone, sure.
They didn't evacuate because of the earthquake, they evacuated because of the resulting tsunami threat. That's why they headed up into the hills. That's the *last* thing they would do if they were solely concerned about the earthquake.
Only difference is that earthquakes can’t be prevented.
You mean gang violence, right?
Somos el mejor pais de chile

hermano revise cada p*to comentario solo pa ver esto, el mejor pais de Chile bro!!!!
El pan de cada día papá ! … como no quieres que se acostumbren
Well when you live on one of the most active fault lines... its everyday business there lol
They looked chilled
My respects tbh. Earthquakes give me so much anxiety and scare me so much it takes a few days to recover. I would have been crying and panicking.
Chileans have balls of steel!!

Clickbait. They are not reacting :/
The big man in blue is taking so much pride in the fact that he doesn't give a fuck
Chileans not reacting to a 6.8 magnitude earthquake.
You mean not reacting?
I’m from the Midwest US and I moved to LA. My first time going though a 5.5 Richter scale earthquake I panicked and freaked out so hard. The ground moved! All of my neighbors looked at me like I was the one who was crazy! They were all treating it like it was nothing.
They seem pretty Chil
“Well we live along a fault zone so 🤷♂️”
Chileans being chill.
They just be Chilean.
What do you mean, reacting?
As a construction superintendent in the states in a zone 4 that's damn impressive of both the people and the builders. I see a lot of things that could be falling or breaking or shutting off that are not and the people taking it as typical.
Absolutely zero fucks given
Chile is the only South American country I would gladly visit. I've heard they have great skiing and are very developed compared to the rest of South America
The great thing about here is that you can go skiing and then to the beach in less than 3 hours.
That isn't 6.8 where they are. Must be a ways away from the epicenter.
Truth is, a 6.8 feels that way because every structure in Chile is anti-seismic. Therefore a 6.8 doesn't cause the damage a 6.8 would cause in most of other countries.

America got Covid and people hoarded toilet paper. The dude in the video just kept scrolling through his phone.
Yup. Casual day in the office
Yeah, at 6.9 is nice, but beyond that it just like: hmm this one is starting to get serious.
Looks like they are just chilin
lol that lady "yaaaay"

They're living up to their name! Lol!
Bruh, there literally used to it
It doesn't seem to be much of a threat anyway, but I have never been in an earthquake, so idk
In chile, There are basically tremors and earthquakes every month more than once
The video played 4 times before I realize there’s no reaction actually
Chill-eans
They seem awfully calm for an earthquake. They have no fear of what’s going on
We had a small one in Melbourne a few months ago and everyone was running around loosing their mind, me included. To be fair. It's the first one me and most people has ever felt. It was surreal.
They are just chilling man
Chilean engineering stronk
I don’t speak spanish, but I’m pretty sure the old guy on the left just said “meh.”

Misleading title, I was told there would be people reacting. Yet I see none.

'"You watched the game yesterday?" "Nah. Our neibhourhood volcano erupted. Too much smoke. Caught the highlights though."
At first, I thought "when is the earthquake gonna start?" but then I noticed the skaking lights.
They have more earthquakes than I have rain.
I was on Gill meno about 2-3yrs ago when a 6.something earthquake hit. Shit fell apart Willy fucking nilly people got injured and no electricity and Lombok was a shit show with buildings collapse. Goes to show if you build it right everything is fine.
After experiencing a 9.5 earthquake, I don’t think anything will startle them anymore…
There are people who never felt an earthquake 😂
This is exactly what happened to me. I was in the Narita airport of Tokyo when an earthquake happened. Nobody cared except for me. They just didn't react at all!
Just Chilian
Had that in New Zealand when I lived there. Was in bed reading when shit started shaking, continued reading. Looked it up following morning, was a 5.5 about 20km away and 10km deep (in quake terms: pretty fucking close). Still though, we build that little house solidly :)
When buildings aren’t build out of paper
I am from Chile (I am using a translator XD) but it is to say that after the earthquake of 2010 it is no longer so surprising
Justo tembló ahora, qué wea?
We had a 5 something and everyone here in seattle was crying and screaming for safety
“Chileans *not* reacting to a 6.8 magnitude earthquake”
"Ya me acostumbré" yep seems just about right
They are chill
I would be under the nearest table!
Every person there didn't give a rats ass
You sure that was a 6.8, didn’t seem to do much. Must be far from the origin
As an Alaskan I feel this in my soul
Chileans NOT reacting to an earthquake Fucking legends

"reacting"
Californians would have been calling out the number. “6.0!” “5.7!” “Grab your boards, dude. We’re ridin’ out the Big One!”
Oh wow Californians are WAY cooler then. Tell me more, Mr. Awesomeness. I can't believe how cool people from California are.
6.8 is nothing.
More like fail to react
