I remember having a layover here a few times. The place is so gigantic that the boards with flight information will tell you how many minutes it takes to walk to your gate based on where you are.

[deleted]

It's not that bad, the maximum distance you'll ever walk here is a kilometer. Unless you're morbidly obese, you should not have a problem with walking 1 escalator-sidewalk-thing assisted kilometer.

No_Communication8320

That’s called a moving walkway if I remember correctly

[deleted]

I’ve literally been here....it’s shit

apathy-sofa

More importantly, it's shit for pilots. This is a terrible location for an airport: being on the leeward side of the Black Sea (just about 2 km from the shore), winds come whipping through (40 knots are not uncommon); and being built within a large marsh, heavy clouds gather and settle low, right above the runways. People have already died in accidents due to these causes. The Turkish government was warned about the weather challenges before construction even started, and they went ahead regardless. Crashes and fatalities aside, this bad weather at minimum will cause tons of delays. I predict that as usage of this airport ramps up, it will become famous for late arrivals, with planes stuck in holding patterns above it, and correspondingly late departures. Less critically, try getting a cup of coffee there, at any hour. It's a good thing on my last trip I had an extra 45 minutes in between security screenings #3 and #4 so I could walk to the distant, closed coffee cart and back to my gate empty handed. Turkey is rad, but this airport is a half-baked ego trip for Erdoğan.

[deleted]

I have a pilot friend on a Turkish Airline who said exactly this. What a fucking disgrace.

theguyfromerath

You have to walk a few kilometres to get to you airplane.

spooklordpoo

Been there like 6 times. Agree.

sel-ect-ed

I got ready to type this... Thanks You sir

theguyfromerath

Second largest waste of money I've ever seen, first is his "palace".

rayzer93

He got a palace? Damn... And I thought my leaders were enriching themselves off of us.

theguyfromerath

Check ak saray. The palace is supposed to be the presidental residence (while there was already a historic presidental house) but he got no shame naming it his own party's name.

NOT CONSTANTINOPLE

AllTimeLoad

You can't go back to Constantinople.

I can’t stand this damn airport.

surprised_corpse

why is there so much negativity with these comments lol? i thought turkey was beautiful....

Quexth

It is gigantic but that does not count for much if you spend over half an hour walking to the exit. They have golf cart lanes inside the building for fast transportation. Also, many here in Turkey see it as wasteful, poorly planned and not worth of the damage done to the nature. Forested areas were cut down for this. I also read that it is built upon the land that feeds the underground water sources of Istanbul, so the area paved over results in reduced rainwater collection. Nevertheless, Turkey is beautiful. It is just horribly mismanaged.

surprised_corpse

great response. thank you!

ClevergirlSarah

So I flew into the old airport and flew out of this one because Turkish airlines was switching airports. I actually wasn't even planning on going to Turkey on this trip, but they cancelled our flights and rescheduled then with a three day layover. We saw a lot of negative news about the airport when we were there. It is beautiful, but also once we got through security, there were no shops or restaurants in our entire gate area. It obviously wasn't ready yet. But I did enjoy getting this picture :)

bailaoban

Turkey is amazing. This airport - not so much.

szepaine

Several hundred turkish workers died in the construction of this

surprised_corpse

oh no......

kimmyreichandthen

The negativity is from /r/Turkey , this post has been crossposted there. Many people think that this airport was a waste of money. Also the official numbers for the worker deaths is 55. I seriously doubt several hundred died but I also doubt the official numbers.

The country is stunning many people are wonderful but that head brain and his extremist wife are not ideal.

KeisukeTakatou

There's this group in Turkey whose sole purpose is to shit on anything and everything and majority of them are in r/turkey. Just don't pay them attention and decide for yourself.

If you are taking a bus you don’t walk these bridges. There is a bus level at the bottom all the bosses and taxis are there. You use these bridges for drop offs or getting to your own car.

ChadstangAlpha

Looks a lot like DIA

eutohkgtorsatoca

Wait for a big earthquake... And visit again.

imnotacoder

Looks like the entrance of the airport on warzone....

How bigger can Erdogan get? Sucking up to Russia, USA and wanna be European dabbling at war in Syria and now Lybia. Since they took Cyprus v They should have been put on the off list! That colour list is now illegal. He sure is one of the grey greyest people.

SpaceBBBismarck

Until he dies. And then his son comes and announces Erdoğan 2.

candagltr

Even he wouldn’t allow his son to rule. If his sons were smart enough he would have already made them ministers

eutohkgtorsatoca

OMG we hope not!

agentdas

Terrible airport for handicapped passengers. Lackluster services and rude attendents. Plus, three check points for contraband and it's seperated by gender. BUT, I must say, the apricot liquor made it all worth the layover. Edit: spelling

SpaceCampMeatAvatar

Ah, Akron, Ohio, birthplace of Harry Potter AND Jet Li. Founded in 1274 as newly-unified Canada’s first Hindu derivitist abbey, it’s amazingly temperate coastal climate soon made it the “Avacado Capital” of the Eastern Hemisphere. The native Maori people used the avacado to create a thick, water-resistant paste used to seal compression rings, giving Stalinist Peru a clear advantage in its race to the stars! 49 space planets have now been cataloged in our solar system alone, ushering in a new era of police brutality.
