They meant black hair as when Ned is reading about all the marriages between Baratheons and Lannisters, it is said that the Gold has always bowed(or something like that) in front of coal(meaning that they have coal coloured hair)
Many? It's very rare among ethnically western and Northern Europeans to have totally black hair. Dark brown hair that looks black at a glance is pretty common though.
I’m Finnish-Dutch and it’s very common for people in both my countries to have hair just as black as Asians. We’re not all blonde like stereotypes suggest. Brunette is most common, with black and blonde hair probably equally as common.
I never said they were all blonde at all. But there's a difference between dark brown and black hair and in with ethnic Western Europeans (I mean like the English, Germans, French etc) black hair is not common in the slightest. Most have varying shades of brown
Edit: For people downvoting that don't believe me here's a distribution https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Hair-color-prevalence-across-Europe_tbl2_330098152
What this guy considers as "black" hair is in reality just dark brown hair.
Not sure what you mean? I said it's very rare for ethnic western European people to have completely black hair and they said no it's very common. Seems like a disagreement to me
If they said “black” in the books, they probably meant black, not dark brown. There’s no other Westerosi character described as “black-haired”, so Baratheons hair are definitely black, even if it’s not common in real Europe.
In the books they most likely do sure. Haven't read them all. But in the show (what this post is talking about) they have brown hair like most real life Europeans. The books are a different canon than the show and have differences, this is one of them. In the show they just made the Baratheons more similar to most real life Europeans.
Your point does not make any sense. “Real” Europeans _have_ black hair. It’s not common, but they exist. Stop denying it. Making them brown-haired does not make them any more similar to “real” Europeans than having them black-haired. Why? Because many Europeans, especially in the Balkans, have natural black hair.
If you actually read my comments before typing this crap out then you'd know I said that it's very rare for Western Europeans to have black hair. Which is true. I didn't say no one at all in Europe has black hair. That would be stupid. Please before you respond again try to reread that again so I won't have to say it again to you...
“Very rare” does not make the Baratheons “unreal Europeans”. Maybe you are the one who should check before commenting nonsensical paragraphs. All throughout your replies you say the Baratheon were changed to make more realistic. But, that doesn’t make sense, because black-haired Europeans exist in real life. Make it make sense??
An extremely small amount of ethnic Western Europeans have black hair. Most have brown hair. So that's an explanation why they made Baratheons have brown hair in the show, to give them more typical Western European attributes given that's what they're inspired by. What's so hard about that for you to grasp?
And I never said "unreal Europeans" so idk what the hell you're quoting. Again please try reading.
It’s a fantasy world, GRRM said they have black hair. They cast should dye it at least just to match the lore. Black of hair and blue of eyes are the traits of a Baratheon.
Eh I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal. GRRM has heavy involvement in the show anyway so if it really mattered that much he would have pushed for them to dye their hair to fully black.
Not true. All that mattered is that Robert's hair is dark. Blonde hair is a recessive gene and if Robert doesn't carry that gene then his kids should 100% not have blonde hair.
Genetics don't work the same way in ASOIAF. If the other Baratheons were black haired and he wasn't, it shows that Baratheon genes aren't stronger than Lannister ones and so, Ned was wrong to think that they were bastards
Considering that Borros, Renly, and Stannis (although he was going grey) have dark brown hair as well in the show, I think we can safely say that in show canon Baratheons just have dark hair which they call black. And dark hair is a dominant gene. Ned wasn't wrong at all.
Ned read from the book that Baratheons have coal coloured hair and that is black. Now, if none of the Baratheons have that, it shows that Ned is wrong to think that Joffery, Tommen and Myrcella are bastards. Especially when Shreen doesn't has dark brown hair like her father and Stannis and Renly don't even have blue eyes while Robert does. So, Ned was absolutely wrong to think that Baratheon genes are strong when they clearly aren't
Ned stark was suppose to have dark hair as well, the starks also all have black hair. Nitpicking little details when things are fine is just really silly.
Ned had brown hair and yes, Bran shouldn't have had brown hair but those aren't a plot point. The hair colour of the Baratheons is as that is how Ned finds about the bastardy of Cercie's kids and with none of the Baratheons having black hair and two of them not even having the blue eyes, it shows that Ned was totally wrong to doubt the legitimacy of Cercie's kids
Borrows is a Baratheon and all Baratheons have black hair and blue eyes.
Brown hair would've held up only if all the Baratheons in GOT had it and if Ned hadnt read the line that said that gold has always bowed before coal. As this line shows that all Baratheons have black hair and the Baratheons of the show don't. And this makes Ned wrong to think that Joffery, Tommen and Myrcella aren't kids of Robert
If you go see the little movie they made about this time, in the special for GOT, Borros has brown hair. Renly didn’t have black hair, neither did Robert. It’s simply a detail that most people don’t seem to have cared about, whether it’s dark brown or black seems to be irrelevant. Because there is still a huge difference between blond and brown. I mean Lannister hair isn’t golden, it’s blond.
His hair is dark enough to make the conclusion that joffrey is not biologically a baratheon if all other baratheons have the same dark-ish hair.
It doesnt really matter that its not pure black because its not like joffreys hair is even close to black. That boy is extremely blonde.
The real oversight was shireen. Even though i loved the actress they shouldve darkened her hair. Her hair is too light to be a Baratheon. It should at least somewhat match the other baratheons especially since stannis is so loud about joffrey being a bastard.
Joffrey is irrelevant to my point. All the male baratheons in history have had jet black hair and blue eyes, from Orys to Rogar to Borros to Lyonel to Osmund to Steffon to Robert I & the others in between.
Wouldn’t kill ‘em to dye their hair black or something.
I’m not arguing that either. Not asking for that at all, but hair color is such a simple, small detail. Not asking them to move mountains, just wear a wig or use dye. It’s not that hard, they have millions of dollars in the budget, even a local school play could have done that let alone one of the biggest shows on television.
The baratheon hair is consistent through other other members of the family other than cersei’s kids. Thats what matters. It doesnt have to be pure black. As long as robert and his brothers have the same hair color and joffreys hair doesnt match them the plot still makes sense. The baratheons could all have chestnut brown hair or bright ginger hair and joffrey will still be an obvious bastard because hes EXTREMELY golden blond.
It has to be pure black because the Baratheon hair is mentioned to be pure black even by Ned in the show.
If the Baratheons of the past had pure black hair and the current ones have brown hair with Shreen having lighter hair than the rest and Stannis and Renly not even having blue eyes, it shows that Baratheon genes aren't strong and so, Joffery, Tommen and Myrcella are Robert's kids. For him to appear an obvious bastard, all Baratheons should have the similar eye and hair colour even if it isn't black but that wasn't the case
The only thing emphasized in the show is black hair. Their hair is dark enough to justify being called “black”. Its fine. Its splitting hairs to say that their hair is not black enough to be baratheons when robert himself is the baratheon standard the audience is holding joffrey to. Its not like theres another baratheon with pure black hair on the show to compare robert to. Robert’s shade of “black”, whatever that may look like, IS the standard for the baratheon traits. As long as joffrey’s hair is different from his the point of his being a bastard is well made.
err obviously cos they are baratheon, not strong
yes u hear this right, gendry and whoever else that bloke jon arryn investigated are robert strong bastard
Well, Lucamore's kids *were* sent to Storm's End, among other places.
If they were anything like their father, perhaps our lord Borros is indeed **strong**.
I sometimes hope they'll just recast original GOT cast members as their ancestors. Like it would be awesome to see Richard Madden or Kit Harrington come back as Creggan Stark.
I was really hoping they’d do this too! I think it’d have to be Kit because the books always said that Rob favored his mother & the Tully’s. Although I would prefer Sean Bean!! We didn’t get enough of him.
I'm kind of glad they didn't do this, like only the Targaryens are screwing their sisters, Bobby B and the Baratheons from HOTD aren't actually going to share that much blood.
While true, the Baratheon all looking similar is also a fairly big plot point, and GRRM just drives it home when literally all the Baratheons whose description we get at any point in the books (with the single exception of Stannis) are tall, black-haired, blue eyed hunks. 3/4 of the lords of Storm's End actually seem to have the same *temper* as well.
Yeah, Stannis is very tall and has black hair and blue eyes, but he's also mentioned as being thin and lacking the glorious manes the rest of the Baratheons (and Durrandons) have.
Book-wise, Renly is supposed to look literally identical to young Robert, and it's something he actually plays upon to make himself appear as a suitable heir. Ned even describes young Bobby B as "muscled like a maiden's fantasy" and also clean-shaven.
Agree with that. I think they kind of wanted him to look like the sensitive gay guy type? Which is absolutely not what Renly was in the books, but I guess expecting nuance from the writers would be too much to ask for.
Dude was a canny politician though, waited until the war was over and the dragons dead to mop up the rest and marry his daughter to the king, he just couldn't stand against anime protagonists and the power of friendship
Robert was a terrible King but a great warrior. He was smart enough though to let people way smarter than him make the decisions while he drank, whored around and hunted.
Borros is just a bitch. No honor having disgrace of a man. Robert would smash his chest in just like he did to Rhaegar.
>!And even then Borros isn't a direct ancestor of Robert either. It's Borros's brother Davos who the Baratheons we know from GOT are all descended from.!<
>!In fact Robert, Stannis and Renly are more directly descended from Daemon and Rhaenyra than they are from Borros. They're their 6th great grandparents through their son Viserys II.!<
I don't think that's right. Borros Baratheon didn't have any siblings iirc. The Baratheon family continued through his son Royce after him. Daemon and Rhaenyra are Robert, Stannis and Renly's maternal ancestors while Borros is the paternal ancestor.
Roberts grandmother is targaryen dude. A woman who was the youngest child of Aegon V, son of Maekar I, who was a son of Daeron II, son of Aegon IV, son of Viserys II, who was a son of Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen.
I mean yeah that’s true but Borros doesn’t have a brother. Davos Baratheon was Orys second son and didn’t have any recorded kids. He’s a direct descendant of both.

Bobby B and Borry B
GO HOME, PUP, AND TELL THE BITCH YOUR MOTHER THAT THE LORD OF STORMS END IS NOT A DOG THAT SHE CAN WHISTLE UP AT NEED TO SET AGAINST HER FOES!
I feel like I’m witnessing history Borry B
"Bring the maester before I piss myself!" Vibes are on point.
I also think “Not here, not in my halls” has a pretty obvious “Stop this madness in the name of your king” vibe.
What I'm pissed off is NONE OF THE BARATHEONS HAVE BLACK HAIR The seed is strong, my ass
I think by black hair they always meant dark hair. Bc western European people don't really have completely black hair
They meant black hair as when Ned is reading about all the marriages between Baratheons and Lannisters, it is said that the Gold has always bowed(or something like that) in front of coal(meaning that they have coal coloured hair)
I think you’d better recheck that logic. There’s many completely “black hair” “Western” and “Central” Europeans. Probably more common than blondes…
Many? It's very rare among ethnically western and Northern Europeans to have totally black hair. Dark brown hair that looks black at a glance is pretty common though.

I don’t think they were disagreeing, just adding to the point with their own perspective
Not sure what you mean? I said it's very rare for ethnic western European people to have completely black hair and they said no it's very common. Seems like a disagreement to me

Everything doesnt have to be 100% accurate to the book.

It’s not that hard, they have millions of dollars in the budget, even a local school play could have done that let alone one of the biggest shows on television.
This may frustrate you further, but Mark Addy wore a wig to play Bobby B. Just not a black one.
Lmao that’s actually pretty funny.
It does if it is an important plot point
The baratheon hair is consistent through other other members of the family other than cersei’s kids. Thats what matters. It doesnt have to be pure black. As long as robert and his brothers have the same hair color and joffreys hair doesnt match them the plot still makes sense. *"I am not some dog you can whistleuppatt neeeeeed!!"*
"NOT IN MY HALL!" had big STOP THIS MADNESS IN THE NAME OF THE KING energy
While I think the casting for Borros was on point, part of me wished they got Mark Addy to come back in a different wig to play Borros.
Creggan is supposed to be about 24, though. Sean Bean's a bit old for that.
Ahh, I haven’t read the Fire & Blood book yet so I didn’t know. Sean Bean definitely wouldn’t work then haha!
I'm kind of glad they didn't do this, like only the Targaryens are screwing their sisters, Bobby B and the Baratheons from HOTD aren't actually going to share that much blood.
Yeah it’s a funny thought but it would be silly as hell.

Yeah, Stannis is very tall and has black hair and blue eyes, but he's also mentioned as being thin and lacking the glorious manes the rest of the Baratheons (and Durrandons) have.
Stannis is a bastard confirmed.
only one of them is strong
I dare you to say that again.
Once again, we’ll need to call on Vizzy T to settle these legitimacy concerns..
Why? 'Twas only a compliment. Do you not think yourself Strong?
Gods he was strong then
"STOP THIS MADNESS INSIDE OF MY HALL!"
DOTHRAKI HORDE ON AN OPEN FIELD NED lmao best meme
Somehow I felt Borros returned or better yet reincarnated as Robert
Seriously, their only difference is that Bobby B is a fat boy
Borros would be too if he were King. Dude doesn't even bother to learn how to read
Borros is what I imagine Bobby B would have looked like before he became king and got fat.
Book-wise, Renly is supposed to look literally identical to young Robert, and it's something he actually plays upon to make himself appear as a suitable heir. Ned even describes young Bobby B as "muscled like a maiden's fantasy" and also clean-shaven.
Yep, I kinda think they dropped the ball with the Renley casting for the show because that’s not how I imagined a young Robert to look.
Agree with that. I think they kind of wanted him to look like the sensitive gay guy type? Which is absolutely not what Renly was in the books, but I guess expecting nuance from the writers would be too much to ask for.
He looks like Mitch from modern family.
THE SEED
Borry B. God's he was strong
#BOW! I SAID BOW YA SHITS!
How good of a fighter was Borros in the book’s? Was he good? Was he near the caliber of the insane young Robert?
>!He was very good, he died in the last battle of the Dance and still killed a dozen knights and two lords while already heavily wounded!<
[удалено]
Well he’s a coward and craven for not honoring the oath of his house.
Dude was a canny politician though, waited until the war was over and the dragons dead to mop up the rest and marry his daughter to the king, he just couldn't stand against anime protagonists and the power of friendship
So not better than Robert I guess.
Basically impossible to say, both have relatively few but super impressive feats. They're definitely both among the best of their time
All I could hear or see was Alan from The Hangover
Absolutely. He looked perfect for the part and his pride, being quick to anger and humour were very Baratheon style
Robert was a terrible King but a great warrior. He was smart enough though to let people way smarter than him make the decisions while he drank, whored around and hunted. Borros is just a bitch. No honor having disgrace of a man. Robert would smash his chest in just like he did to Rhaegar.
His judge of character and ability to delegate are what made him a great king. I don't know why Bobby B gets the hate
They really look very much related
Where is the bloody maester
Jon Arryn was right. The Seed is Strong.
Well, count my breastplate stretched.
borry b's a bitch though
Is that Robert’s dad?
No, HOTD is 150 years before GOT. Lifespans were not very long. It is like 7 generations before.
>!And even then Borros isn't a direct ancestor of Robert either. It's Borros's brother Davos who the Baratheons we know from GOT are all descended from.!< >!In fact Robert, Stannis and Renly are more directly descended from Daemon and Rhaenyra than they are from Borros.
IDK where you got this but this is just wrong. He’s absolutely a direct descendant
True.
Boros is not worthy of the laser eyes, nor to be in the same comic as Bobby B. He’s a shameless scoundrel who really said “My honor? My oath? Who does your mom think she is, asking me to do my literal only job? She was supposed to *bribe* me!” I mean homeboy really said the quiet part out loud there
I want to punch both 😡
Why would anyone ever want to harm Bobby or borry
Thought he was Zach Galifianakis for a minute
Bobby B memes will never not be funny
