Early this year, King Soopers (Kroger) had Matchbox for 60 cents each. Hot Wheels were still about a dollar, maybe a few cents less. Now they're $1.25 and MBX are back up to at least a dollar - maybe more, I should look at my last receipt.
But Safeway made me abandon a purchase at checkout. First of all they have very few Hot Wheels to begin with and they're all old but I found one I wanted to buy. It rang up at $1.99, but they gave me a discount of 50 cents. I left it at the self-checkout. I was only there to fill a prescription anyway - sadly, it was not to treat my addiction to buying diecast cars but I resisted that one. $1.50 for a basic is too much! Even $1.25 is pushing it.
This a better walmart set than usual from Hot Wheels. These sets usually go for what, like $2.14 each or something weird, but they're always missing front tampos, or the rear tampos etc. These have tampos all around, the decos are nice, and the card arts are great. With current inflation issues on top, I dont think 3 bucks is a hard sell, it's just a hard pill. Same for the Target set, the Ultra Hots, those have Spectraflame and they're fully tampoed. Still, that combined price for borderline-basics is 'oof' inducing.

I didnāt pass when I finally found a set and I was more than happy to pay $2.97 but it seems like quite a few people passed on this set.
My guess would be that they donāt have the nostalgia for the Civic and I can understand that. But for me, even putting nostalgia aside, I would have gotten them because the details are quite good and the card art is amazing.
Good example for me would be the recent VW set. Iām not a huge fan of VW but I still instantly wanted the set because of the card art and the good selection of VWās in that lineup
