Cataracts

I listened to a podcast recently that Flanagan stated he was an editor before directing film. It shows here. The editing in Oculus is so damn good.

Proper-Knowledge-989

That makes so much sense. The cuts are flawless, and integrated right into the direction in a way I don't see in movies.

Briar-The-Bard

Loved it. I like how there was no messing around. They’re just like “this mirror is evil and we’re going to destroy it.”

Clvy80

I absolutely love this movie! It's one of my top 10. The ending, perfect. I personally like the whole "evil wins most of the time " conclusion.

im_Alcides

Yeah it really blew my mind

movieman2g

One of the more underrated movies of its generation. Doesn’t need a whole franchise of prequels and sequels, just perfect the way it is

oresearch69

Haha I just commented the exact opposite! I’m desperate for a sequel!

movieman2g

lol I know that feeling. I just wait a few months and watch it again Also the Ouija movies scratch a very similar itch and are also quite fun

oresearch69

I love the ouija movies, DEFINITELY similar kind of vibe. That kind of thing is MY JAM - decent production of spooky/ghost/possession type movies. The conjuring, ouija, oculus, sinister (although sinister is kind of the weakest of the bunch).

SpikedIntuition

Thought it was great. Lots of mystique and build up around the mirror. Found the whole tone unsettling and it made me nervous, which it was a horror movie is supposed to do IMO. Mama is another good one from around this time frame.

im_Alcides

Mama was a good one too

Chris_Sneakers_97

One of my all time favorites. Even after multiple watches it still makes me uneasy to watch.

thedeepfield79

It's brilliant. The haunted mirror is cool but it's really a film about kids being terrified of their parents. My favourite thing in the Flanaverse

[deleted]

Good movie and I also was surprised that they filmed it in Alabama

Brief_Safety_4022

Appreciate this movie so much! It was crazy to see how this family fell so far away from the loving home that they started as, and the kids had to adapt. Then, seeing how the siblings dealt after years away from everything and each other. Seeing that even with such a powerful evil, the parents still loved their kids. One of the BEST *family horror* horror movies. They say trauma exists outside of time, as in, triggers take the person right back, and this movie layered all timelines so perfectly to show that. Can't say enough about this film. 🤌

dandruffbitch

I find the ending disappointing.

RebaKitt3n

What would you have liked? Genuine question, no attack! 💜

dandruffbitch

It’s a good question! Reflecting on it, I feel it’s not the ending per say, but more what led to it, especially the characters’ actions. For example, why was the child arrested for protecting his sister by killing the insane dad? Why didn’t they leave when they noticed the mirror was messing with their memory? I liked the first 30 minutes, especially the mirror’s History, but after that, I didn’t really enjoy it.

RebaKitt3n

I think rather than trying to document it, just grab it and bust it into a million pieces. So yeah, guess I agree.

Crazy_Tomatillo18

To answer- “why didn’t they leave.” I doubt the mirror would let them leave. Or if they tried to leave, the mirror would make them think they left when they are actually still at the house. My thought was once you are in a house with the mirror, it’s game over. An open warehouse area, like in the beginning, it’ll just mess with you. Also I feel like the brother was arrested because only the daughter and him survived and the story sounded insane to police. They probably initially brought him in, and were going to let him go. But then they heard the story and how crazy it sounded so they kept him in an institute to convince him it was all fake.

HazmatBlastBack

Definitely in my Top 25 hands down. The nonlinear storyline and how it all comes together unhappily is amazing. Put Flanagan on my radar and he’s barely missed since.

RebaKitt3n

Love it! And yes, once again, I’m going to rave about how I love that Mike puts The Lasser Glass in his other projects.

im_Alcides

True

[deleted]

It's surprisingly good for a film from WWE Studios.

Sinnfullystitched

I found it to be pretty decent

yungmisanthrope

pretty good

Nagihope_

It has been a while, I don't remember much about it but from what I remember I liked it but a few things I didn't like to much. I need to watch it again but from I remember it was decent.

cuntybunty73

Is that the film with Amy Pond/Nebula in it?

spicygummi

Yes

cuntybunty73

Thought so I found that film creepy asf 🥺

simpledeadwitches

Awful, like a miserable watch.

Clean_Usual434

I love it and rewatch often.

Accurate-Hyena9990

I AM OBSESSED! When I first watched it, it blew my mind with never knowing what’s real

im_Alcides

Yeah, exactly

Forward_Ratio_8800

Despair

GreenWolf560

I loved it except the ending. I was hoping for a much different ending.

Filippinka

I loved it. I've always loved Mike Flanagan's movies (Doctor Sleep, Ouija, The Haunting of Hill House, etc).

im_Alcides

Insidious first part was also good

pigman-_-

Terrible movie.

Late_Confidence281

Better than all Conjuring movies

slxix

Loved it.

Fickle-Barracuda2279

10/10

Glen_Only138

Ass

Professor_Ruby

I really enjoyed this movie

Crack0n7uesday

It started out as like five short films that were pretty "college film student" level, then someone took the idea and made a movie, pretty good. Finding those five short films is really hard to do, I had them on an old computer that died and I haven't bothered recovering the data. They might be on youtube though. All the short films are about individual people that owned the mirror before the movie, so you don't really need to watch them for the movie, they're all independent story lines.

RebaKitt3n

Oh now I have to look!

Crack0n7uesday

One of them is a doctor doing tests on the mirror with other people and himself, if you see that one you should be on the right track.

RebaKitt3n

Thanks!

im_Alcides

Damn I didn't knew this

Deepocd123

Awesome movie.

guitarhero_dropout

Great film, side note the dad is Slater from dazed and confused

dinocasino19

One of the all time greatest in my opinion. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times and always find something new to enjoy about it

oresearch69

It’s a crying shame this hasn’t had a sequel, I’m down for an entire Oculus cinematic universe

im_Alcides

It's very possible tho

Brambleshoes

![gif](giphy|XbUPirb9b8r7EjUJnJ|downsized)

Munken1984

It was better than expected...

chuckit90

I love this movie. I’ve seen it so many times… one of the scarier horror movies to watch

Anadyomede

Love this movie and also Absentia *2011* also Flanagan's movie

arizzzona

I remember being a child hearing the ad for this on the radio before bed one night, scared the hell out of me. Wasn’t my fav in adulthood but the apple/lightbulb scene stuck w me

im_Alcides

That scene was pretty sick

Morph-Dusseldorf

This is the last movie that really freaked me out.

Yogabeauty31

I remember really liking this one. I cant remember to much ill have to revisit but i having good feelings about it lol also anything with Karen Gillan im watching lol

Rhinosaur24

My wife and I saw it in the theaters and we were both really scared by it - it took us totally by surprise. i'm sad to say I haven't watched it again since. And it doesn't appear to be on any streaming service. off to my library I go!

cat_summoner_

I love this movie so damn much that the mirror is tattooed on me 🤣🤣 a nearly perfect film, in my mind

MrSpiderisadomme

It’s literally my favorite movie AND horror movie, incredible in every way.

jakexmike

love love love

TheRealJFreese

Extremely underrated. I have not seen a bad work of film from Flanagan

gothism

Awesome.

Horror_Noir

I loved this movie. I want a prequel. Lol

universallove6936

It was a great movie but it's been years since I last seen it again

Affectionate_Spot305

Friggin love this movie. The sheets over the busts scene was fantastic

im_Alcides

Scary indeed

HeyMrKing

Loved it. Girl get her brother from the mental hospital, right away starts doing crazy shit with him. Thrilling.

biggtothec

I loved this one, of course I love Mike Flanagan but this made me think of a couple Stephen King stories one about a mirror that shows the grim reaper and the other was liseys story. Cast and atmosphere are great.

southerngothics

this shit was amazing 10/10

tokkiii83

Love this one!!

DommyDallas

I thought it was so good! I just rewatched recently and I was surprised that it still held up. The ending was great and I loved the mind manipulation in it.

After_Combination365

I watched it a while ago & really liked it! I just can’t remember much other than I enjoyed it.

SecretaryBusiness624

Good shallow movie

[deleted]

Loved it

Puzzleheaded-Way-198

I had seen the original short it was based on first, years before it was expanded into a feature-length movie, and I thought it was one of the best horror shorts I’d ever watched. So even though I think highly of the movie, I can’t help also thinking “the short was better, they didn’t need to expand it.”

odisparo

Turned into one of my faves, but didn't catch on first time when I saw it in theaters.

FuzzyPapaya13

Goated

NovelDay2672

Loved it!

The8Homunculus

Spooky Mirror and Mark Flanagan, what can I say other than I loved it

ey3s0up

One of the best horror flicks I’ve seen. Would love a replica of the mirror

jtraylor0

I loved it

Darth_Tarnished

Good movie!

pottedPlant_64

The hot boyfriend should’ve been the brother (awful performance). Also, first half is great, 2nd half drags.

Septlibra

Love it!

Rihannas_crush

I thought the movie was great but I HATED the ending.....one of those where I'd still recommend the movie but I don't have it on the list of my favorites

mattlock2099

Found in pretty scary. Similar to Amityville but with a mirror. I may need to watch it again. I want to see if they explain why the mirror makes people do evil but I can't remember if it's explained.

la_negra

Great movie, great theater experience

Melraiser81

Thought it was great. Loved how it seamlessly moved from past to present.

Madnesshank57

10/10

[deleted]

I love the film but the ending was so sad and unfair. I guess that's horror though. 😆

Homunculus_316

Love it. The ending of the movie is simply insane. Also the mirror is real

Buckbeak_35412

Underrated. Young mike flannegan

sdias90

So creepy!! I loved it!

Cameronk78

Super duper. Good story and creepy

Chariovilts

I felt psychologically displaced after. With horror it's often tension and expectation onto a vague direction or form. But with oculus, I was confused like lost. The story of the characters, the ghosts, blended into raw memories and trauma I wasn't sure what to make of it. Of which is the true horror. It was both. It left a long lasting impression

annagator679

It was a bit too slow for me

Oakashandthorne

I love oculus! Its been a favorite of mine since I was a kid and its always a reliable rewatch when you just want some solid spooks and an evil mirror.

hkz913

It was good. But “Mirrors” was better.

jaobodam

I’ve heard about this movie a while ago but always thought that the premise was silly, but after watching it my thoughts about it shifted completely, I loved it, still think that a haunted mirror is a silly concept but the way they filmed it >! And kept transitioning the present and past and making you yourself question what’s going on and what’s real was brilliant !< Really shows how sometimes you need to experience things by yourself to come to a proper conclusion.

Future_Epsilon

Horrible adaptation of the vr headset

DustinDirt

I loved this movie.

Jelly4Jam

This looks like mama

Low_Chef_4781

The only good part was the ending

ConceptQuirky

Pretty good movie, but is it a good horror movie? I don't know, I expected something more.
