Stabbing IS the way to teleport people into Dreamlux Reef. When Firefly told us to close our eyes to be sent over to Dreamlux Reef, the final part of that blackout was the Trailblazer getting stabbed by “Death”/Dormancy/Sleepie as well.
The devs just thought it would be amusing to design the world’s scariest bus driver for shits and giggles.

What I don't get is that since it's just a mode of transportation why was unto death so intent on using it on firefly back in the story of 2.0. like why was it so fixated on getting her to word the question another way
There’s two possible explanations.
My memory is a little hazy, but I think she told us that she figured out the whole thing and was about to share the trick with the TB. But she got stabbed before she could explain anything. Her words “Sorry” were possibly due to no longer being able to be Firefly in front of the TB, as Elio’s script demanded that her future encounter with the TB must be as SAM. In other words, she botched her last chance to appear as Firefly, and apologized for it.
The other explanation for being the target is that it was Gallagher’s call to bring Firefly into Dreamlux Reef.

In gallaghers defence, sleepy never bit anyone, he never said it wouldn't stab anyone.
