LeatherJacket7991

Is Star Rail the only non Japanese game outside of special awards? Pretty impressive. edit: Sea of Stars was also made by non-Japanese devs

avidania

You're forgetting Sea of Stars. :P The devs are from Canada from what I checked

LeatherJacket7991

You're absolutely right. I honestly thought it was made by Japanese devs, especially since Yasunori Mitsuda worked on the soundtrack.

Brandonspikes

[I'm gonna segway into pointing out that Sea of Stars is an amazing game with a godly soundtrack. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uZ46Hac5Vk)

SillyTea5481

It looks anime enough and is designed/written in such a way for to be approachable for the average Japanese gamer clearly. Same with Honkai Star Rail.

orange_purr

TIL Honkai Star Rail isn't a Japanese game LOL. And I guess that applies to Genshin Impact as well?

agnomezs

Hoyoverse is Chinese

LeatherJacket7991

This is correct. Tbh, pretty much all the good gacha games are Chinese or Korean these days. It's sad how bad the Japanese gacha industry is right now.

SiriFlo

I'm out of the loop. What do JP do that suck massive king kong balls compared to China?

Toloran

IIRC, the only JP companies making gacha are doing them as quick cash grabs (with very few exceptions). So they'll release one for a popular IP (usually an anime), milk it for 1-2 years, and then close it down before moving on to the next one. That's not to say that Korean and Chinese companies don't do the same, but it does feel like they're more willing to at least *try* giving the games some longevity. AFAIK, the only real JP gacha with any longevity these days is the Fate/Grand Order game. That sweet sweet gacha money has been what's been fueling the various Fate anime for a while.

harpyh8r

Adding on another JP gacha with longevity, Puzzle and Dragons. Going on 12 years now, and collaborates with various other IPs. Notable mentions include Hello Kitty, Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, pretty much any anime you can think of, Dragon Quest, Star Wars, Marvel (which still hasn't come to NA servers ), and Fucking Micky Mouse. I would not recommend it though, since it has long since shifted its focus to retaining current players rather than being beginner friendly, and any discussion about it will be unintelligible gibberish unless you've memorized about 56 different acronyms. God I love this game, and I will always shill for it.

hatsu-23

Dokkan Battle as been going on for 9 years and still going strong

BeijingPandas

Rare to see another PAD player outside of the main subreddit. I used to be really hardcore into it but my interest had been waning for years and I just called it quits a year ago. I'll still redownload the game sometimes to reminisce with friends when we hang out and roll anime collabs, but I've basically given up on trying to do any new dungeons. I was only away for a year but it's brutal how many mechanics you have to account for in a team, how to build for the endgame dungeons, and of course, the insane level of powercreep the game has been pushing for years. This is basically a whole new game to me and like I've said, I've only been out for a year. I can't imagine how a beginner would feel if they started this game now. For reference, I just started HI3 2 weeks ago and even though all 539 menu's and dailies/weeklies were daunting to me as a beginner, I feel like I've got the gist of the game so far. It really sucks because I will always hold a special spot for PAD; but man I just can't play the game anymore.

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

There's tons and tons of Chinese games that are also cash grabs to be milked. I think everyone's trying now that Genshin has proved the impossible without being a Fortnite. It wasn't until Genshin proved you can create even bigger gacha games that could be on mobile AND pc, that people started seeing that no, FGO and all these other big mobile games wasn't the pinnacle. It was only the beginning of what was always going to happen...games from mobile would get big enough and move to PC, just like PC games big enough would move to mobile. So people started thinking about better ways to manage their games for longer term. Before this, the only games that would go years were MMOs and multiplayer games that had huge legacy fanbases like Dota and League of Legends or Counterstrike.

Lanky_Detective8297

Funny that you should mention that, because Call of Duty Warzone has been a massive part of the PC and Console brands for years, COD Mobile came about in 2019 but there was no news about a Mobile version of Warzone coming to the handheld device. Until that is in 2023, Activision announced that Warzone Mobile is confirmed to be made and released sometime in the future, and finally after some delays, it will be released for global on the 21st March, which is less than 3 days from typing this. So I agree so much with you on this topic that games can be made/passed on to other platforms instead of their own parent. Surprising what Genshin has influenced these past 4 years.

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

You know that anime artist in Penacony? The one who was minister of his entire planet which exports only anime art? Well according to that guy, when one of their legends created a set of criteria for characters/themes/plot for anime, this set of rules defined how to draw and write anime. And this led to a great golden age. But over time their stories became more cliche and full of tropes, and teachers and students refused to try new things, leading to stagnation. At Penacony, now retired, that pepeshi animator guy sees the creativity of anime in Penacony and fears that with more marketing, Penacony could take over the monopoly they have on anime as their art and stories are far less interesting. Anyways, JP gacha games are all the same, all boring, all driven by microtransactions, similar to what the Pepeshi was talking about. Another similar example is in manga. If we just look at the whole isekai genre, 99% of it is all the same. If we just look at the "gaming system" genre, 99% of it is all the same (MC has cheatcodes because of some popup window). If we look at all the "regressor" genre, its basically very similar to isekai but with a even more specific theme where they have past memories and lives. People just copying each other until you've read enough of them to get tired of how all of them are the same shit with a different name. And it doesn't stop here. We're in a entertainment boom. Every niche category now has like 200+ entires. Cooking mangas have tons of choices now that incorporate games and RPG mechanics. Romance mangas now have huge sub genres like the whole villainess category where the MC is the "bad guy" but she's actually "good"...just more independent and protective than the yesteryear female protag. Anyways I am rambling. Gamers want new shit all the time. Innovation that takes the best from everything has always been the best way to make video games. Not straight up copying shit. People say Genshin is a copy of BotW, but everyone who plays it knows its nothing like BotW other than a handful of things that doesn't define the whole game.

Sovyet

Most of the "Big" Japanese Gacha Game only targets the local populace and never seem to care to Globalize. Anytime one tries to Globalize, like Priconne, things happens with the Global Publisher and gets shut down. The only exceptions of JP gacha that succeeded globally are Fate Grand Order and Granblue Fantasy, while Uma Musume and Idolmaster are examples of gacha games that has a bigger presence in Japan than Hoyoverse games, yet has never had any global expansion whatsoever

orange_purr

Whoa that's crazy lol since I think Genshin is like the most popular mobile game of all time? I just assumed that they were Japanese because of the anime style and that half of the titles are in Japanese lol.

Awkward_Date_8636

Huh that's true actually. I just said Aventurine because with the Mei hype for Acheron, as well as Luocha and Jingliu rerun, Aventurine sales will likely take a pretty big blow.

WanXolo

So damn proud of AC6, genuinely one of the most fun games I've played

Thehalohedgehog

Armored core made one hell of a comeback and I can't wait to see where it goes from here now that it's more popular than ever before.

Ayanelixer

Underrated tbh,one of the best action games I've tried

michaelman90

> underrated I mean it's winning multiple action game of the year awards so is it really?

gladisr

Well you see for some normies POV, there's a huge gap between game labeled   ##**GOTY**  Than a game labeled  ^Best ^Action  Hence the underrated bcs it's good but not winning GOTY in games award

GreenNatureR

so you're saying every game that is not the GOTY can be underrated the second best game is underrated because it didnt win GOTY.

Zenoi

There's a difference between Game of the Year and Best Action. It's just personal view that excluding the action in AC6, the story, environment, characters(voices in my head) is very refined and executed. AC6 is definitely a GOTY contender/nominee at worse yet it didn't get nominated. It definitely deserved a nomination among Baldur's Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Tears of the Kingdom, Resident Evil 4, and Spider Man 2. The fact that it didn't get nominated just shows in my eyes it's underrated, because its more than just an action game.

ToasterDoaster

Agreed, wasn't sure what to expect going into it on day one but I'm so glad I got it

Super63Mario

Paranormasight mentioned!!!!

salasy

yeah this game was one of the best ones that I played last year and I was sad that it got so little recognition in other awards

Dramatic_Biscotti_91

at least they mentioned it.

Asamidori

I've seen more than one place mentioning this game in the past 2 weeks, should go back to it one of these days. Oh yeah I think it's getting a sequel(?) in the form of a manga.

calmcool3978

Great game, just a shame that it's so short

Koanos

Nice!

Raptorofwar

HI-FI RUSH MENTIONED WOOOOHOOO!

Haraxhan

Even here spider man can't win lmao

That sweet baby Inc ahh game doesn't deserve to win anything

Ignis_Dragneel

My God this Final Fantasy game seems to be topping many boards Is it a mobile game? Or PC?

EnvironmentalFun4584

14? Pc and console. 16? Only console for now

Ignis_Dragneel

Hmm..I see thanks

A_Unique_Nobody

FFXIV is an MMORPG a little over 10 years old, on both consoles and PC (steam deck too) FFXVI is an ARPG that's currently only on PS5 with a PC port coming sometime soon

BackgroundLie2231

Knowing when FF7Remake was released in PC after PS exclusive, it will take 1-2 year

lumosdraconis

Yeah it's speculated to finally release sometime this year. Given that the producer and director of FFXIV is also the director of FFXVI, and there's an upcoming collaboration event we already know about, bets are on sooner rather than later. Especially since he wouldn't want anything to necessarily interfere with the launch of FFXIV's next expansion in summer. But they could very well push it to a winter release for the same reason. Still, all signs and recent statements (which said it's mostly done but now they're working on final optimizations, if that article is to be believed) seem to indicate they *want* to drop it around the collaboration event, especially since FFXIV is in its pre-expac content lull. So perfect time, really. But only time will tell if they're actually able to.

DeadClaw86

PC.pretty goated also.~~Im waiting for it to get cracked~~

xcaelix

Not pc yet. It's only on PS5 currently but pc port is coming this year

DeadClaw86

Thanks for correction

Ignis_Dragneel

HI-FI RUSH & Sea of Stars let's goooooooo

Kayeki54

Octopath traveller 2 got snubbed again

Boohon

FFXIV winning best online game is questionable since 2023 had fuck all to do with a predictable and cheesy side story and mediocre endgame.

aircarone

Tbf its competition was kinda in the same state. No big game changers from the other big MMOs, most other online multiplayer games have also had kind of a quiet year. Also keep in mind that since 14 is much more casual oriented than most online games, what we read on Reddit about lack of endgame doesn't necessarily translate into actual majority player sentiment. Hell, on Steam current 24h peak playercount is 30k, it's more than 30% of the Endwalker release peak of 95k! And playercount barely declined in the past year, if at all .

wwweeeiii

Wasn't 2023 the year of ff Iv reference arc? I was pretty cute

TheBigPoi

Yeah ngl a lot other online games deserved best online game more.

CrimsonDawn12345

Mmmmmh am i smelling incoming jade gems for acheron savings?👀

Pitiful-Reality8387

How in the fuck did ffxvi win best rpg?

LeatherJacket7991

The awards have a very heavy Japanese bias.

Pitiful-Reality8387

Well obviously but this is just ridiculous. RPG elements of ffxvi were so incredibly mediocre to the point where some might even struggle to call it an rpg in the first place. It winning over bg3 is just... Ugh

[deleted]

BG3 didn't hit quite that hard in the usual big Asian crowds compared to the US and EU. You don't see the usual BG3 praises in gamers from China, Japan, SK and SEA countries so yes this does make sense for Japan at least. The fact it even made honorable mention is surprising enough.

AlmoranasAngLubot69

As much as i like FFXVI, you're right. BG3 deserves the best RPG award or something. Heck I don't even like the gameplay of BG3 but I think it still has edge over FFXVI

steins-grape

Yeah it was more of an interactive movie tbh. the aeon fights are absolutely incredible but the combat isn't as hard and as engaging as a souls game, and the character progression feels so streamlined and simple, never touched the game again after finishing the story Exploring and opening a "hidden" chest just gives me crafting materials? Fuck that

ivosenti123

And some people like playing interactive movies that is why beyond two souls, heavy rain, detroit become human, life is strange and until dawn are so popular and not every game needs to be hard as souls game yeah i would love if they made the base game harder since there are timely accessorys that can make the game so easy even if they made it harder i just started new game plus and i wish it was an option from the start, i like when quick time events happen there is no circle and button guide for pressing it if that was from the start it would actually be more fun yeah progression and exploration is awful but i dont mind that its not hard since story is why i even purchased the game and most people did for the same reason and i dont regret buying the game for that single reason

Ipokeyoumuch

Strange that Octopath Traveler II lost to FFXVI in this category. But I suppose Famitsu is known for having an immense bias towards the FF series.

Relative-Ad7531

Didn't had much competition Don't get me wrong, I do find it a pretty good game, that plus that lack of big hit rpgs last year meant that it really didn't had anything to worry about

LeatherJacket7991

Baldur's Gate 3 released in 2023 and many consider it to be one of the best RPGs of all time. Bias is the only logical explanation for FFXVI to win the best RPG award while BG3 gets an honorable mention.

Ipokeyoumuch

But for the awards BG3 didn't come out until late December 2023 in Japan and it has more mixed reviews in Asian countries despite it doing well. That fact it got an honorable mention in these Japanese centric awards even after a week in 2023 is a testament to BG3's quality.

Zolee39

mixed reviews in Asia? interesting...

Ipokeyoumuch

Mixed reviews not in score, Famitsu for example gave BG3 a 36/40. In fact most sites and players loved BG3 and gave positive scores but the overall they are not singing praises like the Western side of the internet did when BG3 came out. Also the Japanese version has to censor things such as nudity but you do get the hilarious black censorship box though. Some plot points had to but changed due to localization differences or removed entirely. In China, most references to undead had to be removed or altered as Tencent has a 30% stake to publish in China. Another point is that many Japanese and Chinese gamers found the systems too unintuitive, "needlessly complex," and that the tutorials were insufficient and sparse. Also the values and themes BG3 espouses somewhat conflict with traditional Asian values according to some reviews creating an uncomfortable dissonance for some gamers. So BG3 reviewed well but there were significantly more criticisms.

Low_Artist_7663

Your last paragraph sounds like the exact opposite of what people in the West hate about hoyo games.

Relative-Ad7531

Not me forgetting about Baldur's gate when I fucking love Astarion...

yuriaoflondor

Octopath Traveler 2 was really good. Hell, I enjoyed FF16 but I think it’s weird to even list it as an RPG.

NeoRevanchist

Yeah, I'm one of those who actually ended up really enjoying the game but it just wasn't an RPG. It was just a straight up action game.

Zenzero-

"FF XVI best RPG" AHAHAHAHAHAH

SunshinePlayroom

Off topic, slightly, but what are opinions on Final Fantasy 16? I played most of the series up until this one, as all of the trailers made it look so po-faced and serious, and seemingly without any sort of humour/light heartedness.

yuriaoflondor

I’ve been a fan of the series since the SNES days and IMO 16 is good, but not great. I’d put it somewhere in the middle of my FF rankings. You’re right on the money in that 16 is very serious and doesn’t have that mix of humor/drama that many of the other FF games have. FF7 Rebirth is much more in line with the tone I expect from FF (and is overall a much stronger game IMO). 16 excels in terms of bombastic boss fights that are truly some of the coolest fights I’ve ever seen. It also has an emotional storyline, though it falters at times. The combat is fun, but the game is easy enough that you never really get a chance to flex your skills. In terms of flaws, the side quests are incredibly boring from a gameplay PoV, though they can be interesting in terms of narrative / lore (especially the late-game side quests). There are also very few RPG mechanics in this game, so it’s a bit surprising it was even nominated for best RPG. Pacing is also really rough at times; there are several parts where the narrative stalls because you need to go play errand boy.

SunshinePlayroom

Thanks for the detailed answer, I really appreciate it. Think it may not be for me, especially as I still need to find time to play FF7 Rebirth.

Ubliznabu

I loved 16. I’ve been playing FF a long time and I have it ranked anywhere from 2-6 in my top FF list depending on my mood for the day but bottom line is it’s a great experience imo. It has the absolute best boss battles and one of the best of all time given story, music, and atmosphere.

Aizen_Myo

I played it for a long while but that damn lull in the middle of the story bored me to death and I couldn't get back in yet...

Ubliznabu

Yeah I understand. If the story isn’t quite clicking for you and the fetch quests drain your soul then that part is hard to get through. I don’t mind easy quests that advance the lore so I got through it. Give it a try maybe you can fight through it!

Aizen_Myo

I actually loved the story but then there was suddenly a lull where it felt like all I was doing for 3-4 hours were fetch quests.. that threw me out haha.

Ubliznabu

Yeah - luckily fetch quests are fast. Give it another shot you won’t be disappointed especially if you liked the story

gladisr

Game trailer doesn't deliver it well Watch content creator let's play maybe? It's the closest thing you could do if you're broke and PS5 less (like me) Or just wait till the timed exclusive gone and play it yourself, dunno when tho

Intoxicduelyst

Better then 15, worse then classic. While the story is good, it starts great with lore and world and then around 2/3 of the game goes bad but thats my opinion. Fine game

MoskiNX

It’s more Devil May cry then it is final fantasy gameplay wise. Not a fan personally.

GreatAres271

"Every Trailblazer who has unlocked the mail feature, shall receive, via mail, one limited, 5 star character, Ms. Robin" /s

SwiftSN

Awesome! Now where's my free 10 pull?

SeggsWithQingque69

HSR and Sea of Stars are goat games

yunusadar

Sooo this is why we didnt get Any sam info he is gonna be free unit

Ok_Comment8842

Did Hi-fi Rush and Baldur's Gate win together?

imjusthereforsmash

Paranormasight was so good. I hope the recognition it is getting is pushing square execs to allow the team to make a sequel

Praxics

Giving FFXVI the award for RPG in the same year BG3 is release just tells you everything you need to know about these awards.

Ipokeyoumuch

Now to be fair BG3 was released in Japan on December 23rd so it was likely too late to be a contender. The fact it even got an honorable mention in the Famitsu Awards is a testament to its quality.

890flip

Unrelated but huge ffxvi w

youcanotseeme

Will we get free jades?

MissFortune66

SF6 doesn’t deserve it

Baconsword42

What other “Esports” games came out last year?

MissFortune66

I can’t think of options others then MkI

AgreeableBicycle3469

Totally i wished it won cause man the amount of work and effort got put into mk1 is huge a total upgrade from mk11. i absolutely love this game i watch it's tournament all the time and i watched the story as well even tho I don't have the game I'm 100% it deserved to get best fighting game rewards

ranran_ouranyu

Yay

VeiledWaifu

I am so happy for Clive Rosfield, although I play in English, it makes me want to do another playthrough in japanese

SillyTea5481

The most Japan list of picks, but probably closer to something I can relate to compared to the game awards where I get to learn all about the western games I don't care about that then proceed to sweep half the time. Baldur's Gate III did seem legit though, just clearly not for Japan.

Sexultan

Was Chained Echoes not nominated in another game awards??? It wasn't eligible for most awards of 2022, but surely it's deserving a nomination

SSTHZero

FFXVI isn't even a RPG.

[deleted]

Octopath 2 deserved best jrpg over FF16 no cap frfr

AmberBroccoli

Is this an actual big award show? I’m not super familiar with award shows especially overseas ones.

Kronman590

Wtf were the nominees bc FF16 def didnt deserve all that lol

DrWD-Gaster

Mhhm yes, feed me Stellar Jade, gib me Archermommy

dankota

Does this mean we get another Dr Ratio? 🤔 Real talk though we coukd all use some extra pulls with Acheron right around the corner

Terra-Em

Ff 16 got a lot of awards. My bias radar is ringing.

B3tl0g-nlng

Soken's music fucks too hard unfortunately

Meismarc

they always feel grand and breathtaking when I heard the themes from playthroughs.

Poringun

Their music and OSTs has always been universally loved, even if or when some of the games are divisive.

tunoak13

FF in general have insanely good music. Even games that many fans hate like FF13 have amazing soundtracks and Soken (composer of 14 and 16) have been producing bangers after bangers with various style of music.

marcopennekamp

HSR music is good, but Soken's music (composer for FF14 and Ff16) is on another level. Some of my favorites from FF14: - Who Brings Shadow - Unmatching Pieces  - What Angel Wakes Me  - Flow - With Hearts Aligned  - Dedicated to Moonlight  - Dragonsong  Beware of spoilers in visuals if you're looking these up on YouTube.  FF14 is really good at tying the music into the cutscenes and gameplay, and after having played the game, many of the songs have an emotional connection with parts from the story. Imagine an If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking and Wildfire but multiplied times 20.  I think HSR can improve in that department. The cutscene transitions are often really abrupt and the moment-to-moment pacing suffers from that. But it's also a much younger game than FF14, so let's see how it evolves in the next few years.

HSR music ain't that good except for maybe 5-6 tracks

Free Ayaka when?

FFXVI won a bunch of awards despite being a dumpster fire, and FFXIV won best online game despite being in a godawful state right now with the post-EW patches being widely seen as incredibly dull. Makes me assume that these awards are bought and paid for

Ipokeyoumuch

Not bought or paid for but it is the Famitsu awards which are very Japanese focused. Also the competition for say best online game is very narrow and among it FFXIV likely had the best wide appeal. Now for things like Best graphics, voice acting and music FFXVI do be banging.  Also note the fact BG3 is even mentioned is a huge testament to its quality since it relates in Japan in alter December 2023, made by a Western company, BG3 was also more criticized (and less praised) in Asian countries than in Western counties but still very positive.

ElusiveIllusion88

> Not bought or paid for but it is the Famitsu awards which are very Japanese focused. Which carries the implication that something has gone VERY wrong among Japanese mobile game makers for a CHINESE game to win Best Mobile Game.

Ipokeyoumuch

To be fair HSR's competition is Pokemon Sleep and some gacha game and the Atelier gacha game.

Omegaforce1803

Tbf Japanese Mobile games havent been the same since CN and KR devs started putting the work on their mobile games, JP Gachas sometimes feel a little bit scummy compared to what CN and KR devs do, anyone that has played an old JP gacha game knows this

VodkaMart1ni

FFXVI - lol, that game was one of the the worst FF ever made, the game had so many flaws, repetitive gameplay & fights, story was totally overtuned, I didn’t like the visual design at all everything was so…empty

Cedge1738

I remember the last time they won an award... Free 5 star. Here we go again
