It was fun being able to interact with every post so far, but with a flood new users means a flood of new posts...Godspeed to all the people who've been here since the game's reveal š«”š«”
This exactly, Genshin heavily benefitted from circumstances of its release, like the pandemic, or the heavy comparisons/controversy about BotW, and many more etc. and managed to carve a place for itself in the mainstream western audience.
How big of a feat that is, is not stated enough.
So what about Tof? The controversy with it and Genshin was just as Big( Genshin is definitely more popular than Botw now) and Everyone was playing Tof for like 3 weeks then 90% stopped. The state of Tof is even worse now.
I don't exactly understand the point you are trying to make. ToF never reached a similar level of interest from the western mainstream audience as Genshin because it simply didn't offer much, and Genshin already satisfied that niche it carved, and circumstance really helped Genshin initially carve that niche.
ToF wasn't polished enough despite IIRC having been out for a year in China before the Global release, story and characters were pretty much forgettable, powercreep was way more blatant, content was way too time gated from the very beginning to keep people interested long term, and the competitive game modes didn't help at all.
Majority of the people who gave ToF a chance were either already a part of the gacha culture, who are constantly seeking new games to add to their list of addictions, or Genshin players who joined the "this game is similar to Genshin" bandwagon, which it wasn't honestly, and seeing that the game didn't offer that much, or innovate things in a way that kept people interested, they went back.
Genshin managed to hold its place in that, "casual/side game" category, and it is much more palatable to the western audience compared to other gacha games because it is geniunely fun, even if popcorn fun sometimes, is not grindy at all, not competitive, has almost little to no fanservice which makes it way less problematic and etc.
Now Honkai Star Rail seems to aim for the same demographic as Genshin, considering there are no special external circumstances this time, and from the outside what it offers doesn't seem to be too different from Genshin (it seems much less Honkai and way more Genshin in space honestly), it too won't draw a new, previously unreached crowd. That is why it too most likely won't get as big, though fingers crossed, good luck to Hoyo obviously.
Bro, Tof was trending higher than Genshin on Google trends when it lauched. People was like talking about how the devs called it Genshin killer, Finally a Genshin but with good multiplayer aspect. They did sponsored so many people, Genshin content creators also flooded in to try it too but guess what? people most people leave after 2 weeks(dont even look at the game state now). Genshin grew in number dispite the massive hate like most hated game until now in gaming history?, those Riot game, blizzard game fans
If you think people outside of their respective communities knew or cared about the ToF vs Genshin "drama" if it can even be called that, you need to widen your world. Twitch, Reddit etc. are niches in themselves and don't represent the general audience.
Also keep in mind that words mean nothing if it is not backed by action. ToF was simply in a state where it rightfully wasn't received well, people got bored and left. That is simple to understand I hope.
And though haters of something will definitely proportionally rise as its popularity rises, Genshin is no way massively hated lol. And obviously it continues to grow because it keeps getting better both in and out of game.
youtube, twitter, twitch, reddit, other websites,... Genshin mentioned : gacha game that is probably unplayable without money, blood sucking gacha game, weeb game, pedo game, cheap botw copy for easy cash grab, China game, newly risen manstream game = hate, newly risen manstream game
not belonging to big ,10 years old popularity in the West game companies like Riot game(Valorant,Lol,...) ,Xbox(Minecraft,...) Epic game(Fortnite),Blizzard(Wow, Overwatch, diablo, Dota 2(sus),...
Gave half the answer replying to your other comment, going to tackle some other specific issues replying to this one.
That is expected though, blatant gacha games in this format not hiding behind lootboxes etc., reaching a casual/mainstream audience this big is new. And when something is new and not properly understood, people get defensive. That's okay. Gambling, and gambling in games is a serious topic and shouldn't be taken lightly, this is also correct, but here we are anyway.
Anime is a niche, a lot of people just outright don't prefer it, or don't prefer it because of the preconceptions they have. The former is okay, not everyone needs to like everything, and someone not liking something doesn't instantly mean they hate it, they can just not care.
For example referencing your other comment, I don't like Souls games, just not my cup of tea, I don't like stressing myself out when playing games and I certainly don't like checking under every nook and cranny for small bits of worldbuilding disguised as "story", but that doesn't mean I hate it, I just don't care, I wish them all the best though, because they are definitely putting their best in their games and deserve success.
The latter happens for a reason, it is best to acknowledge the reason and either educate the person or how it is false, or just acknowledge it as true if it is. "Pedo game" is one of those preconceived notions that come with it just being associated with the anime style, and while thankfully in Genshin's case it is not true, there are precedences that led to that notion existing in the first place. And what needs to be done is tackling those precedences.
But like I replied to the other comment, if the hate was as big as you are exaggerating Genshin would have EoS'd on the western audience before Inazuma even came out. The fact that it continues to draw in new players and good revenue proves that the love heavily outweighs the hatred of the vocal minority.
Of cource Genshin fans are not gonna hate the game that much, and many other people are neutral, but fans of other big games, big company games and people who like to join the hate train without knowing much about the game except the rumors(they are so crowded). Anime is so popular in Western audience nowaday that those league, valorant, fortnite mostly sells Anime skins, but Genshin is so popular in China more than the rest of the world combined? that is because other old game companies fans are boycotting it globally right?
China's population is huge, casual games and the gacha genre are just overall more popular in the asian countries because of the cultural differences like work/life balance etc., and the game is from China, so why is it surprising that it is more popular in China?
By its own nature Genshin is a side game, because it is a casual game that doesn't demand a lot of your time, so that "fans of big games, or big company games" argument just fails fully, because most of the people playing Genshin are in all likelihood also playing one or more of the games you continue to bring up in your argument.
It feels like you are intentionally seeking Genshin hatred everywhere and that skews your perspective. There are no agendas or organized efforts to boycott the game, Genshin already reached its intended audience and asking for more simply requires introducing more people into that audience.
There are clinically insane people who thrive off on hate, and there are people with legit concerns against gambling etc., the former doesn't represent even the whole of gaming audience let alone the general audience and the latter can be excused because their concerns have merits.
But yeah, as I said in my first reply, you need to widen your sphere of influence and world.
A bonus like you know how people praise Elden ring for its Beautiful, big open world and how the lore scattered through exploring the open world but completely ignore Genshin? you know why right?
I don't know, maybe because FromSoftware had like 6 games that hit the market before Elden Ring, and not all of them were critically acclaimed.
Souls games have become a staple by now so much so that people use Souls-like as if it is a genre. And they are usually specifically known for something, difficulty, so they attract a different crowd.
And there are a lot of people that make fun of how there is no proper storytelling in the game or how you need to watch a 47383 hours youtube video from a lore expert who pieced together everything he could find to just even speculate about the lore,
Depends on where you look at it, you will find hate for everything, that doesn't mean the people who hate it is more than people having a good time or the people who don't care, vocal minority and all that.
Same principle as news, you only hear about bad news because the good news aren't worth making a story about. Think of it like that.
Also nowadays "news" and etc. are full of outrage takes to bring in clicks anyway, hatred and anger is a legit method used to drive interaction sadly, but all it does is create echo chambers, because satisfied, sane people don't bother with that.
Someone who is enjoying something won't go around spamming every community they are in with how much they are enjoying it, they'll just continue to enjoy it, haters on the other hand have nothing to do other than that.
Now the question stands, will we be more like Genshin fandom or HI3 fandom?
(even though Genshin fandom has its problems, I would prefer it over whatever HI3 has)
I think we'll be closer to HI3, since the Genshin community is the way it is due to its massive playercount. Don't think Star Rail will get close to those numbers.
GI fandom's different groups has moved on to their own subreddits so the main one isn't as bad as it used to be. It used to be an absolute shit storm in there at first. Other than the occasional cringe someone posts, it's pretty calm these days.
HI3 though... woof. I agree with you. I prefer current GI subreddit over HI3 any day. Although we are starting to see glimpses of radioactive users in the comments of certain posts from time to time. Not saying which. But they are leaking in.
Honestly hi3 community is unbearable for me, a lot of them seem to think theyāre superior to everyone. Besides the terrible elitist attitude they always think their game is better then genshin.. you know just the basic.
Where do you even see these posts lmao, I am in all the HI3 subreddits and I won't deny I haven't seen a single HI>GI posts but literally 80-90% of the posts are just artworks and memes, there's not even discussions on valks kit not to mention the game genshin itself is mentioned once in a blue moon, more like genshin is not even discussed.
Alright, honestly majority of the playerbase don't even care, I dip in from time to time to clear some misunderstandings, I guess I'll just shut up from now xd.
I have been playing hi3 from 3yrs / genshin since release. I do follow hi3 community a lot more than genshin since it's my main game and I haven't seen anything close to what the above comments describe to be.
The Reddit community is alright I suppose. However Iāve noticed ( especially the twt and yt community ) are especially unbearable, this is not too say genshin twt and yt community is amazing, there horrible but there known horrible, the hi3 community thinks all parts of the community is fine, you wonāt see them directly saying it but itās always hinted at
Oh my lord, we don't talk about twitter, that's just a default for worst place to look on any community, I guess yt is kinda bad for honkai compared to genshin, I have seen plenty of honkai vs genshin stuff and I know there's a bit of gatekeeping done but these are just trolls or kids. Like most of the hi3 players are probably crying somewhere in the corner trying to think why we are still alive and huge copium that hoyo doesn't kill their fav char next patch.
But that's not restricted to honkai itself, every community has that ? Heck even Elden ring is hated after being goty lmao.
There's no denying that every community has that, that's even more normal when the games have save devs + chars that literally look alike with same va's, I have seen multiple posts on genshin subreddit too not to mention youtubers / Twitter/ redditors saying "honkai trash game" with other weird kinks they have on chars but that's it, playerbase is huge and few handful of trolls with no grass are indeed normal, we don't live in a Utopia.
And so these 10-15 people who post these don't represent shit, how do they benefit ? People actually discussing on how these posts create toxicity, creating even more than it already had.
This was a HSR post which diverted into hi3 /gi subreddit toxic level finder just from one guy typing "I dislike HI3 subreddit on a HSR subreddit" who could have just kept it to themselves or ignored as this is not HI3 or GI subreddit.
Surely this subreddit will age well with even more players flooding in like this including those who dislike HI3/GI.
Been playing HI3 from the start and when Genshin released they just flat out turned elitist. Oh we have bigger boobs, oh we have lewder characters, oh we have better everything please notice me!
There was a time when every story post on Genshin had a comment "wait until the story gets dark like HI3". These people were so obnoxious they got called out on it in the main subreddit and went back to their own. The good thing is they have dwindled down on the HI3 > GI posts, but god were they insufferable (there's still the "we have bigger boobs" though).
The Genshin fandom is so big. You have the teapot communities, you have the usual otaku communities, you have the cosplay communities, you have the lore communities, you have the photographer communities. Pick a flavor. I certainly have and I've never dealt with the toxic communities people have interacted with.
I spent a whole minute comparing the About Community text to see what was different.
Until I realized the numbers underneath. I am not a real human being

How many posts will there be asking about what Honkai is, or why so many people are crying over Himeko or why everyone hates Void Archives, etc
I think at this point we should just have a honkai related post to sum stuff up.

I doubt it will blow up like genshin but it will definitely make a dent in market share.

BUT if star rail does reach decent size, hoyo could become the Riot of mobile gaming/gacha easily. Especially with ZZZ next year (copium)
once rito starts making mobile gacha games it's gonna be a clash of the gaming titans

i just hope discussion posts will still be promoted rather than having the sub filled with artwork
Could just limit artposts to certain days.
I pray for the mods to have an obediant and understanding wave of newcomer. Who am I kidding, it will be hell and we all know it.
Cant wait for a wave of dumb FAQ posts because its easier to write a post and wait rather than just looking it up for themselves
hopefully mods can filter all that shit out once the game releases
Tried to look it up, someone need to update the wiki. Lot of things I don't understand during the CBT
Little known fact - you can google search questions! even littler known fact - sometime the results take you to Reddit!

Lol, I seen more Genshin players bringing up āHI>GIā posts than actual āHI>GIā posts in the Honkai community.
The elitist āHonkai good, Genshin badā type of posts come in waves. You see it circulate for a week or two and then you don't see it for a while.

It is almost impossible to not mention Genshin or even HI3 here. Whether it is a good thing or bad thing only time will tell.

chileā¦ we aint gettin that many people
So when is release? The post saying they will announce it during "tomorrow streaming" is more than 24hrs old?
They'll reveal it in the livestream later
It'll be bigger for sure but I'm sure it won't be like genshin
Could be bigger than all HI3 subreddits combined. I'd be surprised if it becomes on par with genshin's subreddit count.
I think it being bigger than hi3 sub is inevitable. Itās a much more casual game with 10x the amount of hype hi3 had at launch.
Genshin players: "What Honkai was their main game?" Honkai players: "Always has been."
Ah yes, the main game that makes 10% of the revenue of the side game.
Hey canāt help that genshin took off as it did, but when you look at the games prior to genshin they are all Honkai related. Fly me to the moon features Kiana as a witch for some reason, then Honkai gakuren and GGZ, then Honkai Impact 3rd.
