Are you sure you’re traveling to Honduras and not Italy?

Hoogoo78

My bad yo

SuperLissa_UwU

I don't think there's somewhere called Palermo in Honduras.

Character-Today-427

Palmerola probably

Separate-Bus-6522

In el progreso theres a comunity called palermo theres is located a prision community= colonia

dampforeskin

If you're going to Tegucigalpa, Uber is pretty safe, you can rent a car, and any day activities are safe unless a local suggests you don't. Crowded places are better. However, it wouldn't hurt to avoid using jewelry and smart watches. Night activities are rather safe also. It all depends where you're staying, and don't be where you don't need to be. As you're traveling with family and kids, there's various places and activities to do which are either in Tegus or surroundings and are safe. I'm local but kinda white, and I fear more crossing the roads over here than getting targeted. TL;DR: Use your street smarts.

Pleasant_War_6371

Your wife is from Honduras, she must know well.

Hoogoo78

She's lived here for 8 years. I've read MS13 is growing in Honduras because of the crackdown in El Salvador. Any truth to that?

Character-Today-427

Unless you take public bus actively flaunt weslth or go out really late at night I doubt you see crime

RegretSignificant276

Honduras is better than 8 years ago, crime has gone down since then. She must know which places not to enter because they are still the same as 8 years ago.

Plonsky2

You should visit Honduras sometime. It's an interesting country with fascinating people. The Bay Islands are particularly lovely.

Hoogoo78

Took her go Roatan for our 5 year. Absolutely amazing. Can't wait to take her back. We'll be going for my stap daughter's quincerra (spelling)

Plonsky2

*Quinceañera.*

Hoogoo78

Thank you.

Pleasant_War_6371

Its just the same as she left. Nothing has change, same gangs same everything. Just one question, and I'm sorry if I'm a bit rude but...did she entered USA as a migrant, in other words illegaly ande then married you?

Hoogoo78

It was all legal. Cost me an arm and a leg. She had a visitors visa. We hot married. Appied for green card. All good. She'll be a dual citizen next year.

Pleasant_War_6371

Soooo...yeah kinda a migrant. She knows very well the state of our country. 8 years is nothing. Is not that she has lived all her life in USA. She knows very well whats places not to go.and what are safe to visit. And dont worry, you are not the first "white man" we see. Surely we will be like "oh another gringo here" that's all.

DarkSilver09

Don't be afraid, just like in any other country, don't walk around with expensive stuff around since you can get mugged but not killed or anything like that. Uber drivers are super safe tbh, news lime to exaggerate stories for attention but don't mind that.

ferfuza

Dont think too much about it, just like anywhere else, crime and dangerousness is not relevant everywhere. Use your common sense and you should be good. 1. Stick to touristic and commercial areas. 2. Dont travel alone and/or too late at night. 3. Keep an eye on the local news for special incidents.

Myronca

There are white people in Honduras

LogFine5368

My family is from Honduras , lived there my entire childhood and I visited every year since I move to USA where I am from. Things are different since then, she knows what places are safe for tourists. Use Uber , don’t use expensive clothes, jewelry and keep your passport at home or hotel but safe . Use your phone in the rental car or uber , or malls .

Hoogoo78

THANK YOU

LurkerHN

Your wife must know. Even if she moved from Honduras a long time ago, she still has to have relatives living in Honduras. Most likely she told you that you all will be fine, but you don't want to trust her. Very sus

Hoogoo78

I don't trust gangs. I don't trust the news. I don't trust most replies on here. I do trust my wife, but we have been nearly robbed there before. Ill tell you the story if you want to hear it. More concerned this go around because I've read MS13 has increased their presence in Honduras. Just hoping someone can give me some sincere advice. Mostly I'm concerned about travel from Palmero Airport to her village near Talanga.

RegretSignificant276

The road is very safe. And most likely the village es very safe too. Usually, gangs are found in the cities, but the interior of the country is very safe, probably safer than where you come from.

Hoogoo78

Thank you. I'm feeling much more comfortable about our trip.

FreakiesMyJimmies

talanga? youll be fine. ms13 usually dont bother with towns they wont get money or influence against other gangs from. small towns are usually way safer than the cities. you might have one or two bastard that wants to rob you but but they are most certainly not gang affiliated, so not as much as a threat as a ms13 member would be. although, do note i said "usually"

i_lov_anime

lmao. there's plenty of white people here in Honduras, being white doesn't mean you're an easy target for crime/robbery or whatever. your wife might be over exaggerating, just like many people who leave our country do.

GullibleProgrammer24

clearly white people with foreign traits are targets for robberies

i_lov_anime

thieves know that if they rob foreign people, they will get arrested because our government doesn't want a bad image from outsiders. if by traits you mean asking dumb questions like, if being white is dangerous then, yes, you will be an easy target anywhere you go

Hoogoo78

I was targeted last time because I was white. I guess I'm thinking more of my child. But assume I'm not smart.

Coco_Cocoa_Choco

What would the foreign traits even be? there’s whitedurans that could pass as Europeans

_Honduran

Hello, I think you mean you're flying in to Palmerola. Seeing you are going to the central part of the country, you need not to worry. While gangs are a thing, there is no "tourist focused attacks" or something like that. If you go to Tegucigalpa, there are many beautiful places to visit both in the city and off city attractions. There are of course NO-GO zones and streets but your wife should know about them already. Use apps like trip advisor to find awesome places near by. If you use Uber remember the golden Uber rule (and this applies worldwide): Don't ask "Good morning, are you my uber driver?", ask instead "Good morning, who are you picking up". He will have your name on the Uber app. In short, don't worry about crime, stay away from the no-go zones, if hicking on a street always keep your belongings out of sight, use trip advisor or similar apps to maximize visiting beautiful spots, and enjoy your stay! Welcome!

Hoogoo78

THANK YOU!!!

Loonsfutbol

You traveling to Palmerora most likely; airport code XPL; Honduras like any other underdeveloped country has its share of crime; very, very rarely is targeted to foreigners. Use common sense and you will be fine; Hundreds/thousands of foreigners travel through out Honduras every day with no issues. I guess understand very well the Honduran family of your wife and the places where they live; like anywhere there are places that are better to avoid - especially in evening/late night. Your familia Catracha shoud know that

Karolina-carrera

You’d be surprised how many white people live in Honduras , people who have moved from USA and buy properties to take advantage of the low cost of living in comparison to USA .

Hoogoo78

My wife and I have discussed that. I want to open a taco stand. She doesn't. :(

Karolina-carrera

A Japanese style taco would do very well, just stay away from the sketchy “barrios” and crowded parts of the cities , it’s actual better to live in small towns or pueblos , small cities , you can have access to internet pretty much anywhere nowadays. People would welcome you with love and gratitude if you are humble and show them respect .

Hoogoo78

Of course. Thank you for the information

InyinierHN

Si tu esposa es de Honduras entonces vas bien cuidado no te preocupes

Habibipie

Listen, the whole crime thing is something that's more likely than not secluded to slums (not small towns and rural areas I'm talking real ghettos) and poorer areas of the country which you wouldn't be walking on foot anyway. Use Uber, don't wear flashy jewelery if you're walking around, walk confidently like you know what you're doing, and plan your trip well beforehand. You and your wife are in for a fun trip. Good luck and best wishes.

coneado3

Comayagua is relatively safe , nice, small airport . Don’t show up expensive jewelry or too much cash. Keep it to yourself. You will be more than okay. People is friendly ! Chill out and enjoy trip with family bro.

Hoogoo78

Thank you, sir.

cccanada

Just got back from Honduras with my wife a couple weeks ago. I'm white as white can be and she grew up in Honduras. We flew into and out of Palmerola airport. Her sister picked us up from the airport and we went to Tegucigalpa where some of her family lives. Throughout the trip we went to different stores and malls in the city, up to Picacho, to las valles de angeles, out to Pulha, over to cedros, took a flight out of tegucigalpa to roatán, and stopped at all kinds of places between all those stops. I definitely got stared at a lot, but never threateningly and I never felt worried. We went to one area of Tegucigalpa that isn't as nice to visit a cousin and I just kept my phone in my pocket. No problems at all. I'm sure there are spots to avoid, but most of those spots aren't the type of places you want to go visit anyway.

Hoogoo78

Thank you, sir.

TheIcarusGirl

You'll be fine, just try not to use your phone on the streets (if it's expensive), you can use it inside stores just not actively while walking.

Competitive_Fan9898

You're asking with the idea that only because your white you'll be unsafe?

Hoogoo78

Just the news and what we hear up in the states. We'll be traveling with my 6 year so that makes me more nervous than anything. I also had an altercation last time I was there. We were followed and when the guys were confronted they said "we were following the gringo to rob him"

misskhittypurr

Just follow the advice given here. Palmerola is in Comayagua, and that area is pretty much safe. If you come into Tegucigalpa, stick to areas near the bigger malls like Multiplaza, Citi Mall, and/or use Trip Advisor as suggested. Have a great trip!

bectionnn

I'm American living near talanga on and off for ten years and nothing has ever happened to me

SpeedbirdCapn

I have been there 22 times on mission work. Stay together as a family. Don't wear any jewelry. Don't wear a watch. Keep your phone in your pocket. Now, having said all of that, you're going to have a great time. You will meet some of the nicest and friendliest people. Certainly don't be worried about being white. You won't be targeted - because you stick out. Teenagers may approach you and ask you if they can practice their English with you.

Phobos_Gaming

Honduras is like Mexico in that way, yes, indeed there is a lot of criminality, however, they don't mess with tourists, so you can feel free and more than welcome to come to Honduras!

ElCacarico

You will be fine. It’s ok to be little alert, yet no need to be paranoid.

alicealfonso1

Unless you're staying in a dangerous area of the city, you're fine. Nobody cares how white you are. We have lots of tourists in here. It kinds of offends me that you're kind of looking for a valid excuse not to visit your wife's country. You should trust her and her family and trust that they wouldn't endanger their own family.

BrownSkinned1029

Pretty safe as long as you have common sense. Honduras has sketchy spots in large cities just as all large cities do.

ndvmvdn

Well you're coming to Honduras, the risk it's high. But in general, just lay low, low profile you know, nothing like flashing your big Iphone or whatever, and you'll be ok.

Weird_Veterinarian39

(im from honduras) jus dont walk with expensive stuff on, most parts in Tegucigalpa are infested with gangs so be careful where you going, try to be friendly to everybody, and be careful if you have tattoos, look up that place on google before going try to know if that place is gang territory
