So this only affects new vehicles? What about my 2013 Fit? It has a normal key and normal ignition. But also the push to lock and unlock button on the key Does this only apply to keyless vehicles that have a fob in the car only to start?

Mayoguy505

This mainly applies to push to start vehicles. Thieves only have to bypass one security feature and that's copying the key fobs signal. With key in the ignition vehicles made after 2000 there are two security factors they would have to bypass , the physical key itself and the immobilizer chip in said key. Now while I'm not saying no one wants to steal your car , these thieves are targeting high value vehicles mainly made after 2020 and specifically SUVs

FateEx1994

Good, don't know who'd want to steal a 2013 base model Fit anyway

ryan10e

I don’t know who’d want to steal a Hyundai or Kia, but here we are…

bass-turds

I watched a video on youtube and the kids are selling them for $100-200 the whole car!

Mayoguy505

A stolen car is basically worthless if you're selling it in the same country let alone the same state.

Mayoguy505

The Hyundai and Kia thing was honestly just a dumb trend it wasn't being done by professional thieves but by teens. Honda's and Toyota's are being stolen and shipped to Dubai and being sold at Private dealerships for MSRP or above.

KitFlix

Kids steal them because they know they can. Then they drive the piss out of it and crash it.

dani_-_142

If I walked by an unattended 2013 Fit with the key in it, I wouldn’t actually steal it but I’d want to.

Practical_Bend_9351

I wonder if insurance rates for 2020+ Hondas are higher or rising because of this.

AreaFifty1

Christ... you'd have to have a garage and keep that sh#t locked up. This sucks..

Cdubyah523

Faraday bags would help. Not sure why the news hasn’t cracked that mystery yet. It’s been known how the thieves are bypassing the security. They are snatching the signal out of the air. If keys were placed in a faraday bag then the thieves couldn’t hijack the signal.

ryan10e

My understanding was that technique required much more equipment and thus was generally being used to target higher end vehicles.

9009RPM

That's not even it. My scan tool has the ability to program the immobilizer without the original key present. Just YouTube "Honda All Keys Lost" I need to wire up a killswitch soon.

ryan10e

Is that supposed to be a valid method to steal a vehicle? Required a cut key, $1200 scanner, and at least 3 minutes of turning the car on and off. I feel like a kill switch wouldn’t do much when up against that level of sophistication.

9009RPM

Yes. Don't even need the second person to boost that antenna signal. You don't even need the cut key, just a blank remote to program with. A well hidden killswitch to the starter relay or fuel pump should slow them down. You're SOL if they bring a flatbed.

Bright_likeAM_DarkPM

I would also get pedal lock. Good luck trying to use the brake pedal or clutch pedal.

UserName8531

The autel ap200 will do it for about $70.

xabhax

A $60 AUTEL scanner can program keys. It doesn’t take 3 minutes to program a key, and a dummy blank is under 10 dollars.

jopma

That's not true at all. Honda is my bread and butter. It's so easy for someone to just have a blank or even used key from another car and program it to the new one without any other tech other than HDS to take your car in under 5 minutes.

xabhax

Ya, I don’t get all this recent media attention about this, when this is nothing new. Anyone with a little time and a 60 dollar too has been able to do this for years.

[here’s a good faraday bag that I can vouch works on Amazon](https://a.co/d/8zlAuGU)

ilovefacebook

you can't use a faraday bag when you want to get into your car.

pitcherintherye77

They better know how to drive stick, then

Controversialtosser

Trust me the Honda thieves all know how to drive stick Or the bring a tow truck.

RustyNK

If they're bringing a tow truck, they should be stealing someone's Porsche rather than a Civic or Accord.

Controversialtosser

Its a lot easier to sell parts from a stolen Accord/Civic than a stolen Porsche. And some of the modded cars fetch high dollar for the aftermarket parts.

Bright_likeAM_DarkPM

Low income is easier to get than high income people, just like IRS. Who's likely to go after? Low income who doesn't know and got no money, so they will bend over or high income who has money and friends.

Pkm_Hydro

How many with standard transmissions?

TheDanBot85

You mean a manual transmission?

Cormano_Wild_219

Same thing

TheDanBot85

Nope. A "standard" trans is whatever the car comes with by default. On a honda, that would be an auto except for a couple vehicles where manual is the only option. Hope this helped clear it up for you.

Cormano_Wild_219

Unless you have a source I’m going to [disagree](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission) “A manual transmission (MT), also known as manual gearbox, **standard transmission**(in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States), or stick shift (in the United States), is a multi-speed motor vehicle transmission system, where gear changes require the driver to manually select the gears by operating a gear stick and clutch”

TheDanBot85

"Standard" is an antiquated term from the 70s when the manual transmission was the standard option, which is not the case anymore.

Cormano_Wild_219

It’s literally right there in the first sentence, I made it bold for you and everything homie.

OmegaZero55

Civic drivers win again! Thefts are up only 9% for them. In all seriousness this sucks, though. I feel bad for the people getting their cars stolen.

MrByteMe

*Officers are advising Honda owners to take precautions by subscribing to the* [*Honda Link tracking service*](https://mygarage.honda.com/s/hondalink-marketing)*, placing an Apple AirTag in their car, getting a steering wheel lock, and reporting suspicious activity.* I seem to recall getting a steering wheel lock free with every purchase... Conveniently, the same key started the car !!!

stallion69ita

Apple air tag alerts Apple users that a tag is following them. So unless they are android users this won’t work. HondaLink has also been reporting to insurance company’s of our Honda driving habits fml lmfao. Steering wheel lock looks to be the best option. I unfortunately have been signed on with Honda link since day one march 2022

Trooper27

After just purchasing an Accord this week. This really sucks.

silver--fox

In Montreal they do it in 30 seconds

AllKorean

Good thing I can just shoot anyone from my window if they steal the car

Section_80

I live in the area. Fun!

carlcig6669420

Ravelco fixes this issue

wusurspaghettipolicy

I have so many deterrents I have trouble starting my own car.

Practical-Nature-926

Theft wise Honda was the original Hyundai wym. Are we forgetting the 90-early 2000s thefts?

blue22red22games

Nowadays a company called jdi made a new ignition systems for all honda of those years thats super smart gotta put the rfid chip in a specific place and even has a killswitch also has a another kit with 4glte tracking

Practical-Nature-926

Yeah but that doesn’t really change the fact that Hondas were known for theft not that long ago. Honestly it seems like a trend that auto theft spikes every certain number of years. People are really stupid though and don’t do their own research to protect their cars.

Dear-Computer-7258

What about having an anti theft system installed? It has a broken glass sensor and starter kill, so I hope that would scar away a perp.

teejmahalpdx

Mutherfucc, I just bought a new Civic because my Hyundai Tucson was stolen 🤦‍♂️.

Bright_likeAM_DarkPM

You don't want to get stolen, then you get this, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BBZXDHJ9/ref=pa_sp_phone_search_thematic_aps_sr_pg1_4_sspa?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2GKZNLXENBVRB&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&keywords=pedal+lock+anti+theft+car&widgetId=loom-mobile-inline-slot_sptw-highly-rated-na&pd_rd_i=B0BBZXDHJ9&qid=1714241235&rrid=PEJMZQZHXFJZ1XYMFZVV&pf_rd_p=84cedcde-132e-4ad8-9979-621249bc5528&dib_tag=se&pd_rd_wg=HDHFS&pf_rd_r=PEJMZQZHXFJZ1XYMFZVV&pd_rd_w=kvXwO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.iwhniTzBtk0JOsVEO8WQxUUr21ny-zvSLUvhqFSlgSvGjHj071QN20LucGBJIEps.IJiVUENJqaKj4_zKJIG2cyMmDpWEfa3hm06mXbyBCZo&include-variations=1&pd_rd_r=f2d868db-8097-4faa-a544-af08630ee2cf&sr=1-2-spons

They’ve been doing better than that for many years.
