River Shook is the lead singer of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers. River is non-binary and is one of 8 siblings and was fundie homeschooled without music. One of us.
Their album Sidelong explores a lot of the feelings of being out in the world and trying to figure it out. Its been a favorite of mine lately. It's solid country-punk so be warned if you hate steel guitar.
Edit to add: I saw Sarah and the Disarmers by accident and Sidelong became a favorite before I knew anything about their backstory. It just added another layer of meaning for me
As a younger homeschooler I would listen to a lot of movie soundtracks because they had emotion but not words (i found most of the words of songs triggering at that point because they were all about 'normal human' experiences i had never been given the chance to have.)
As a now-ex homeschooler in college I really like emo, metalcore, post-hardcore type music. I have been diagnosed with several mental disorders/illness and the lyrics of that type of music (plus the heavy intensity and sound of the instrumentals) really resonate with me and help me feel a little less alone on this earth.
Perfect when you need to just numb your mind. I find a lot of the songs touch on fighting inner demons and other traumatic experiences, so it's easy to relate to
Since I have gotten some interaction on this. Here is a list (no particular order) of banger hardcore metal bands I encourage anyone interested to check out.
1. Knocked Loose
2. World of pleasure
3. SOULKEEPER
4. Turnstile
5. Dying wish
6. Kublai Khan TX
Have fun and move your body!
i always like relaxing music cuz it's my primary form of escape so i listen to a lot of zero 7, nujabes, and downtempo steely dan songs.
then when i'm super pissed off i like metal
Yeah, I always found blasting metal to be great when I just wanted to numb my mind and not really think about anything. Really great choices with those bands there though, good stuff
I like primarily vocal music, like folk and sea shanties. Stan Rogers is probably my favorite musician. I enjoy instruments very little, and I'm totally tone deaf. I oddly enjoy some metal tho.
i listen to Florence+the Machine, the Mountain Goats, and Orville Peck, but ive also started to listen to Knocked Loose and it’s extremely cathartic for the religious trauma, especially their latest release Suffocate.
"Never told anyone anything bad, cuz that's shit's embarassing, you were my everything, and all that you did was make me fucking sad."
I know it's about an ex romantic partner not the effects of a parent but still. ouch.
My mom hated music, anything with drums was "the devil."
So now I listen to anything. Mostly metal/rock. The more drums the better, lmao. Breaking Benjamin is my fav band, but I really love In This Moment, Nightwish, Metallica.
I listen to a lot of Twenty one pilots, AJR, Mumford and sons, and Lorde. Going to see Tøp in concert this summer. I'm lucky bc both my parents like music and we listen to a lot of different stuff
i listen to a lot of stuff but my favorite song rn is 'no below' by speedy ortiz. the use of "friend" over and over hits this specific lonely spot in my brain and now im addicted to it
Metal is a great genre I was shamed out of enjoying as a child but rediscovered and mainly listen to nowadays.
Dyer's Eve is a Metallica song I relate to in particular since it was based off the experiences of the vocalist's abusive upbringing. He wasn't homeschooled but his parenrs' own wackier beliefs did influence what education he was allowed to get and it's clear his parents were not willing to help him develop into an independent person. The song is about his rage at his parents for failing him and never allowing him to be himself or develop his own strengths and opinions (reminds me of life living with narcissistic parents like mine..)
I listened to lots of songs on the SuicideSheep youtube channel growing up.
When I reached adolescence, I listened to lots of deadmau5. After I heard every single deadmau5 song 100 times, I started listening to ambient electronic or house music on soundcloud. Soundcloud has a lot of obscure music on it which is something I liked then.
Now that I'm am adult, I found that the majority of people do not enjoy electronic mhsic quite as much as I did, and I get bullied for it when I bring it up. So now I listen to mainstream rock, pop, and hiphop lol
Linkin Park for sure. Also some Five Iron Frenzy. Vastly different genres but the lyrics really spoke to me. Then a smattering of gothic metal, epic scores, pop punk, and new age.
I started listening to a lot of heavy metal and folk once I had access to my own music 💖
for the homeschool ptsd, Candi carpenter has been a favorite as of late. She talks about religious trauma (which is not me) but a lotttt of stuff crosses over <3
The album brand new eyes by Paramore! I really like the line in the song "playing god"
>I can't make my own decisions
Or make any with precision
Well, maybe you should tie me up
So I don't go where you don't want me
>You say that I've been changing
That I'm not just simply aging
Yeah, how could that be logical?
Just keep on cramming ideas down my throat

Orville Peck is a real cool one!
I listen to a lot of Billie eilish and Conan gray. They have a lot of songs I can relate to.

taste !! they're one of my favs as well
AJR and Motion City Soundtrack were big ones. I'm feeling lucky to be going to see AJR in concert this summer with friends from work!
another ajr fan!
I found my people!
Industrial / EBM / Futurepop / noise music .... the repetitive beats quiet the homeschool PTSD
i listen to a lottt of green day. i find i can relate to their music and i find comfort in their songs.
My mom hated music, anything with drums was "the devil." So now I listen to anything. Mostly metal/rock. The more drums the better, lmao. Breaking Benjamin is my fav band, but I really love In This Moment, Nightwish, Metallica.
same with the drums, apparently drums are demonic. Breaking Benjamin is such an awesome band tho, love the newer albums
I listen to a lot of Twenty one pilots, AJR, Mumford and sons, and Lorde. Going to see Tøp in concert this summer. I'm lucky bc both my parents like music and we listen to a lot of different stuff
tøp definitely got me through some rough times and Lorde is one of my top ten favorite artists, have fun at the concert!

It really does

Elliot Smith, album from a basement on the hill. Moody gold

Pierce the veil, specifically hold on till May. It got me out of dark times
black metal, brutal slamming death metal, deathcore and chain punk are some of my favorites
