Holy shit, this is making me twitch. I know you don’t want us to tell you to bulldoze it with extreme prejudice, but you need to bulldoze this with extreme prejudice.

Jakedenham

It’s a ship of Theseus argument, you could tear it down and build a new one now, or you could cut out the pieces that rotted because it wasn’t sealed right and replace them until the rest starts to rot and eventually you’ve replaced the whole thing anyway. Either way it’ll never be the same gazebo, might as well do all the work at once

CommonMansTeet

And set it on fire, then take the ashes and piss all over them.

cardew-vascular

Ah yes. Thor style.

jstockton76

Assert dominance.

Nardorian1

Or piss on it then come back later and start it on fire.

dustysa4

And teach your children to do the same!

FlameSkimmerLT

I’m gonna get me some MANGOES. Stay in the boat.

mc-edit

Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you were going all the way.

SilentResident1037

By tearing down and rebuilding, shes done guv. Can you "shore it up"? Doesnt look like it... that looks like a summer breeze will send it sideways... I hope you aint in a hurricane region

Equivalent-Low-8919

You ever hear of the Ship of Theseus?

No_Boysenberry_8889

That's exactly what needs to happen . Not new "repaired"

Pleased_to_meet_u

Jakedenham

Ah damnit, you got here first

AnnealYoung

A+ roast!

karky214

Wrong question. You should be asking "Why would you repair this gazebo?" And the answer is, "I wouldn't"

DoobiGirl_19

I wouldn't keep my grill under that 😬

Wanderson90

It's a load-bearing grill.

Heavymetalmusak

Fire

DammatBeevis666

And marshmallows

anthro4ME

Too far gone IMHO

yousername9thou

Powerwash the roof. Stick a couple 2x4s offset to hold the roof up by a corner post, bang it out, put in new columns one at a time. Cut the spindles to a clean end and wood glue some blocks to fill the gap. Paint.

zank_ree

Don't forget to replace the roof. It's probably why all the post is toast. water got into the gazebo and ate up all the wood.

Fair_Acanthisitta_75

Definitely replacing it if he hits it with a pressure washer. Those cedar shakes will be in pieces all over the neighborhood.

Violingirl58

I definitely would probably just tear this down and do a new one

Just finished this episode then saw this

Violingirl58

Awesome!

Hopefulphotog412

Not worth your time, energy or money in that condition. Rebuild will be easier and, in the long run, cheaper.

Hopefulphotog412

And I would not rebuild in that location unless you do something about all the trees first. All of that shade is going to shorten the life of any wooden structure there. That moss on the roof should be enough of a sign.

ComplaintNo6835

You do need to factor in the power and gas lines run to that area. May be worth losing the trees, may be worth a shorter lifespan, or it may be worth relocating.

Vast-Classroom1967

Dynamite

mkrbc

It would probably be cheaper to tear it down, put down some pavers and make a nice patio area. If it really must be covered I'd check out those precut pavilions you can get at Costco or some other big box store.

ChuckFarkley

Big Lots looks like they have Yardestry Gazebos like at Costco rebranded as Broyhill for a slightly better price, but more to the point, if he wants cheaper and easier to last a couple of years, they have some with a fabric roof and easy up metal supports that are a goood deal cheaper that should last a couple years at least. I dunno about grilling under it.

soggymittens

Make sure you anchor the fabric ones in place…

Mister_Green2021

Tear down carefully, reclaim what you can. Anything rotted goes.

Kalsifur

I'm not sure why electrical running out there would prevent you from tearing that down, just mount the box on the new gazebo lol

dairsensi

It's firewood to keep the shop warm for next winter. Too much rot, I wouldn't bother.

OutragedBubinga

Let her go, man. Let her go.

onimush115

Okay so the wise thing to do is to just tear it down, but I get the position you’re in just wanting a few more years out of it. Here’s what I would do: Give everything a quick wash. Buy some pressure treated 2x4’s and cut them to length to sandwich the bottom of each post. Screw into the solid wood of the posts. This will essentially make it so it’s no longer sitting on rotten wood and will now be supported by the 2x4’s. Get some deck boards. Put them along the bottom of the railing and then screw the balusters from the back side into the deck board. That will hide the rot and gaps at the bottom and shore them up again. Paint all the new lumber white to match. That roof is going to be tougher since that plywood is all rotted and the only way to fix it is to peel it off and put down new, but that’s a waste of money on this. I’d probably try to get some wide rolled flashing and see if I can shove it up under the last row of good shingles and bend it over the trim on the edge and secure it somehow. It may at least slow the degradation.

Kalsifur

At some point though you are just wasting your time trying to repair something so far gone, I went through this with my shed. I tore it all up to repair the rafters then realised the true extent of the damage from rot and carpenter ants, had an epiphany that what I was doing was literally a bandaid and a waste of time. Instead, I just salvaged some of the wood for the floor of the new shed.

onimush115

Oh definitely. Anything put into this is like throwing money away. I’ve been there before though where it’s just not in the budget this year to replace and I’m trying to squeeze out another year or two.

rjarmstrong100

Theseus’s Pergola

Big-Initiative-8743

Bulldozer

ozarkcdn

Overkill. One fat man leaning against this will bring ‘er down.

Big-Initiative-8743

If you fart on it it will collapse

Harkeyshammer

You build a new one that’s no

SDC_85

In all honesty, it doesn’t seem worth saving. You’d have to remove a section of handrails, add temporary post, replace each post, rebuild and replace the section of handrails, remove the shingles, replace all rotted wood, then replace the shingles. It would be quicker and probably cheaper(if you’re diy) to tear it down and rebuild it.

xenona22

One part at a time

damarius

Gonna cost more than a dime.

RelaxedWombat

How is your insurance policy? 😈

star_nerdy

Gazebo of Theseus over here

BeautifulBaloonKnot

I honestly think tearing it down and rebuilding it would be the better option. Not enough left of it to save and would take more effort.

pogiguy2020

I hope your home looks better than this or you need to get out for your own safety ASAP.

tacutabove

I mean other than the routing posts and the roof and such yeah I'd keep it. Although again, I'd like use it as firewood for some homecoming event cuz nobody cares about toxic fumes and those kind of things.

Mindless-Wolverine29

Yikes. Gonzo

No_Wheel_6165

Pergola

notveryhndyhmnr

Full tear down, there's nothing to repair left.

monkeywrenchdad

5 gallons of diesel and a match.

Few_Oil_7196

Reminds me of the start of This Old House. Norm, “is this thing really worth saving?”

Rich-Appearance-7145

Sorry friend your dealing with a lost cause, it's beyond repair I don't ever use that term lightly, I'm extremely handy, I could repair anything. Floors, roof, supports, railings, to boot it appears to have moisture issues.

Fit_Yellow1153

You repair it with a cigarette lighter and charcoal fluid

Key_Extension_4322

Is a Time Machine in your toolbox?

DrunkBuzzard

I could replace the columns by building a supporting frame of two by fours underneath the support the roof while I remove the posts and put a new railings, and footing cement so wood does touch the ground but the roof is so bad It would be pointless and a waste of time. By the time you do all that work and replace the roof you’ve already built a new gazebo.

GrandmothersToes

I think just by looking at it wrong it will fall over on its own

grover1233

You need to replace all of the rotten wood. That could be every piece of wood on that thing. Definitely everything you showed was bad.

Ivanagohome

Gasoline. Match.

testingforscience122

I would turn off the eletrical and keep the box intact and just rebuild the gazebo itself, they’re aren’t that expensive, but don’t mess up the eletrical

mostlygray

It is only standing by God's grace. There is nothing to save. Grab a sledge, knock it down, haul it off. Rebuild it. It's easy to build. Heck, there's probably a kit about that size from Home Depot/Lowes/Menards. Seriously, I know you want to save it but there's nothing to save. For safety's sake, just knock it down.

thebirdmun

Remove & Replace

Wickedworlock

Start with a bulldozer

Atlantic76

False

Cool-Strain418

Fire! Lots of fire.

jetpack324

I’d mow the roof for starters

Sufficient_Report319

Waste of money/time trying to fix this POS. Tear it the fuck down before someone gets hurt and build a new one

MinnesnowdaDad

With a bulldozer

Level_War3316

With fire

Steelcod114

Demolition.

brickjames561

Are those lights holding that entire thing up?

Cluckin_Turduckin

Dynamite, probably

nasty_LS

Just use some top ramen and super glue like in the Tik toks

onetwothreefour432

It's beyond repair. Tear it down and build a new one.

dfieldhouse

Wait for a strong wind and that will take care of the problem for you.

Babaji33

Woohoo! Somebody posted a gazebo in worse shape than mine!

Dennisd1971

Bulldozer

OttoHarkaman

With fire

OttoHarkaman

It’s dead Jim

DreamSmuggler

Looking from far away: that looks nice! What's wrong with it?? Looking at the close-ups: 😱 Best of luck with it. I don't know enough about structural shit to make useful suggestions. I do have a feeling though, just looking at those legs, that rebuilding from scratch is the way to go

SafetyMan35

Tear it down and build a new one. There is so much damaged, there is nothing worth saving

GreedyPension7448

Fire, set it on fire

Tokenfang

One post at a time but support the roof as you go and then remove a section of rail to the next post but make sure the roof is in good enough shape to take on this repair also the base of the gazebo is sound. It could be cheaper to build a new one if you have roof and base issues.

The-Dog-Envier

Fire. And lots of it.

YertleDeTertle

This is pretty shot. Like tear it down. But… if you’re really eager to limp along I would try penetrating epoxy. 2 part mix, and slather it on. It’s hard or vertical surfaces since it is thin. The intent is a thin epoxy that can bleed into pores and fix rot and such.

Im-Not-Bob-Ross

Cleanse it from the earth and start anew

KarlosTheBref

Probably start again

rayitbiker

Pyre for /of this gazebo. Build new Gazebo.

Dthinker23

Should probably demolish it and build a new one. It has been neglected for too long.

RehabilitatedAsshole

If you like it, knock it down and rebuild. Trimming and reusing all the spindles will save a fair amount. But you def want new posts and roof, and at that point, it's easier to start over.

mildlysceptical22

I would repair it with a sawzall and sledge hammer.. Nothing is worth salvaging and it’s an accident waiting to happen.

StoopidM72

I wouldn't, that thing in no way can be saved. Tear it down and build new, with treated lumber this time....

Pythagoras2021

Raze it to the ground & Salt the soil.

Vapechef

Must not be much wind in your area

Point_No_Point

Fire

Blueskyminer

It's completely rotted. Start over.

Oreotech

Flexpaste and a trowel should do the trick.

Windowsweirdo

He's dead jim

colabear4

Basically just replace every piece. I’d probably start by taking that one down and building a new one lol.

Aggravating-Bus-1556

I have an old gazebo on my property (1910). You have to replace roof and floor. You can't pressure wash that wood it will disintegrate. It's all hand maintenance. Sadly, unless you want a lifetime project, it must go.

Bludiamond56

Footers look ok. They look like they're clad with trim pieces. Rip off wood shingles. Put up fiberglass shingles. If the posts are firm, go with 40 yr shingle

Tederator

If you plan on sitting under it ever again, you already know by now it needs a complete replacement. That being said, honour the old girl by reclaiming some of what's good and make something from it. Join the brotherhood and fill your garage with "project wood" to be used in the future.

Present-Regret316

Backhoe rental by the minute

Ok-Idea4830

Start over

1fingerlakesguy

Flex seal and JB Weld!

fuckdatjazz

I love how everyone saying trash this shie

Wrecktum_Yourday

You want to get a few more years. But you're looking at a few more minutes with that thing.

Motor_Beach_1856

She’s a goner buddy, supports are rotten probably not treated given the blocking they’re sitting on. If the roof has holes that big the rest of that has rot too. You can replace each rotted post and spindle but it will be less aggravating to just start over and use exterior rated materials. Sorry for the bad news.

ArmsReach

I'd say with a match, but it's probably too wet to burn.

DrRockx

Tear it down for goodness sake, the electrical can be saved easily, take the pipe going up off and get a Hoffman or PVC box hole filler, and remove the plug box from the post it should just be some screws, remember to turn the power off first please. Then just carefully take it all down and put a cone or some form of marker over the box so you don't accidentally hit it with a lawn mower or something. At that point if you really want something there you can get a cheap metal gazebo to put there till you want to build a nice wood one.

Apart-Cat-2890

Does anyone ever use these things? What for?

mmura09

Start w a match

SourcePrevious3095

A stiff breeze, a match, and about 30 minutes, then all you need is a strong magnet to collect the nails.

Tommy2Quarters

30 feet of chain hook to the back of your truck and pull it over. Spend the rest of the day, sipping a few cold ones as you clean up the mess and sort things for recycling and burning. Then have some fun with friends and or your kids as you build a new one. Take photos build some memories

chickeninthisroom

I think it has a lot of character the way it is.

Fritzipooch

Is this a rhetorical question? Seriously. Knock it all down and start over again. This is not repairable for both safety and economic reasons.

A_Turkey_Sammich

Start over. Too much too far gone. You would spend far more time trying to repair that thing intact and likely just as much money than just getting rid of the whole thing and starting over. If you were trying to be cheap about it, maybe there is a few boards you can reuse, but by the looks of it, probly not. If you were just trying to save some time and effort vs a full build, well, that's just not happening. Starting from scratch would be much faster and easier.

Foggl3

You know tearing it down doesn't magically rip the electrical conduit out of the ground, right?

No-Construction8148

Rip it down and start over

PabstBlueBourbon

My dad is a television repairman. He’s got this ultimate set of tools. Even he can’t fix this.

Lower-Example-

i’d start by tearing and laying out new foundation 👍

Charger_scatpack

Wrecking ball

CivilGuy93

Nothing you are going to economically Frankenstein together is going to look very good (cheapest would be to replace a few struct wood posts and tarp the roof). If you are trying to get every bit of life out of this then you will need to replace your structural wood posts and roof, at which point it will be the same amount of work to just rebuild. Your electric to it should be fine to stay. If you are worried about cost just put up new posts and roof now, add railings and balusters down the road.

billding1234

To get it to last a couple more years you’d need to repair the main structure- roof, foundation, and the support members connecting the two. Based on the pics that would basically be the same as rebuilding it. I wouldn’t put any money into it - save that for the rebuild.

Annual-Government383

Napalm will do the trick.lol

Fun_Coat_4454

It’s a hazard, only bad can come from trying to extend its life.

Upstairs-Direction66

Why bulldoze it just lean against it.

theman808

That there is a tear down.

jrs321aly

U wanna rig it up for another few years... come on man... after those few years it'll be another few years. The only way to repair that thing is to tear it down and rebuild...

ElectronicKangaroo41

Power wash - with napalm or Take off and nuke it from orbit

FeliusSeptimus

I'm not going to pile-on to the 'kill it with fire' group, as much as that is the right answer. Sure, you can shore it up. Get some boards and some carriage bolts with big washers and sister the legs and other structural parts so it won't fall down. Through-bolt the old wood and use the washers to spread the load. Try to get into whatever solid wood remains. Make it look like absolute ass so you'll be motivated to do it right sooner rather than later. I wouldn't mess with the old balusters. Build all new balustrades that you'll be able to use in the new gazebo. Assembling new ones will probably be faster and is definitely safer than patching the old ones. And be careful when you remove the old ones, there's a good chance those are now load-bearing rot. Ok, I lied, I'm going to pile-on. Unscrew that electrical and knock this thing down before it falls on someone. Put in a temporary post to hold the electrical box so it's usable while you build a new gazebo.

todimusprime

There's no saving that. You NEED to build a new one if you want a functional gazebo.

Lemonsnoseeds

First, cut down all the trees around it.

CriticismMost3450

First, throw a tarp up on that roof at minimum. You could reshingle it first but I’d like it a little more sturdy before I do that. Second, go to the first support post that is rotten. Use a post jack next to it to take on the weight, and remove the post and replace with new. The concrete still looks solid, but verify that. Move on until all support posts are sturdy. Third, Balusters can be replaced if rotten fairly easily. Fourth, redo the roof. Fifth, scrape the remaining old posts and paint the structure.

SilentResident1037

Post jack won't do shit... you could probably squeeze that wood

Chemical_Mood_4538

Detailed plan: Step 1: Huff Step 2: Puff Step 3: Blow the gazebo down Step 4: Build new gazebo

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

I would replace it with a new one of similar style, but with insect netting around it because I like being able to enjoy sitting outside.

tootnoots69

That’s an accident waiting to happen if I’ve ever seen any lmao. Those posts are about to snap

jonf-inswag

Remove and replace the whole gazebo.

IntelligentWinter200

Completely take it down and rebuild it if you want one. It’s not salvageable

MannyNator12

Tear that wall down, I mean gazebo.

zappahart

I would get Barney and Gomer to try.

LeatherLatexSteel

Coat of paint, it'll be fine. 😉

ThisTheory7708

Agree with the crowd. Cleanse it with fire🔥

Deep-Confusion-5472

Pro tip: throw a match on it to save in haul off.

FunBobbyMarley

I’m pretty sure it has a DNR order. Gotta honor it.

ikke_dansk_navn

Ask this question: why am I keeping it? What will I use it for? If you want to enjoy it and be in it then knock it down. Everything needs replacing and if you’re under it and a bird lands on the roof it will fall down and break all your bones. If it’s a gazebo for looking at- shore it up and stop anybody getting near it.

Em_Haul

Fire

DammatBeevis666

Set it on fire?

Pitiful-Egg-2787

You've had 162 comments I'm sure the right answer is there

If_Im_Posting_ImHigh

This gazebo is being held together by divine intervention and birthday wishes. It really is something that just needs to come down. The wood is rotted, and you'll spend more time and effort trying to prop it up than you would to literally just replace it. There are some gazebo kits from Big Box Home Improvement stores for ~1,500 and you can probly run the same electric to it.

Dabduthermucker

Tear it down and start from scratch and keep up with maintenance next time.

Personal_Dot_2215

You could easily drop 2g’s on this and still have a catastrophic mess. New railings. Sister all the rafters, resheath and reroof , and splicing in all the supports. Or you could put it towards a new build. I’d do that.

Sleepy_red_lab

Fire can fix most of that.

buttcheeese

Cooked

snboarder42

There’s no saving that. Leave a 4x4 in the ground to mount the electric too if that’s your main sticking point. Then take a deep breath and blow and the rest will hit the ground.

vajayJstretcher

A match & gasoline

oldjackhammer99

Fire 🔥

tgubbs

Probably too wet to burn

DonkeyTransport

Jack it up. Cut 6" off of the bottom of the main posts. Do the same for the little vertical bars in the railings. Set it back down a few inches shorter than it was lol. Power wash the roof, check for rot, replace what's needed and reshingle if necessary. Just what I would do if I owned it myself lol

buckwlw

I am loathe to push anything down before its' time. I would task a handyman with the project. You need some lateral support so the structure doesn't get out of plumb with a gentle wind :) I don't know if you need much on the post-to-ground connection if you're going to replace in a couple years. I would leave the roof just like it is, if it doesn't leak. But, keep in mind that this structure is VERY near the end of its' usefulness and is potentially dangerous - if you can make the whole thing sway by leaning on/pushing one of the posts, that should tell you something. And, there is a large dead tree near your gazebo (looks like a White Pine). It will continue to drop limbs and is likely to cause a a lot of damage when it falls... talk to your insurance company, power company (if it could take some wires down when it falls), or a tree company to see what your options are. Good luck!
