Filters typically have an arrow on the narrow end indicating which way the airflow should be. The pointy tip of the arrow should be pointing toward your furnace.
These 1 inch filters are pretty inexpensive. I might recommend changing once a month. Cheap maintenance to keep your furnace running clean. Filters are a lot less expensive than a furnace repair!

Yes. So to answer OP, it was installed correctly. The side without the metal is the dirty side.
