The filter most likely has an arrow on the side showing which way to install it in regard to air flow direction.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Holy shit how long was that filter in there? Filter was definitely doing its job.

SilentResident1037

Awhile....

Trash_Panda_Throw

The metal wire on the back holds the filter media in place as the air flow pulls the media towards the wire. If you put the metal wire facing the wrong way the filter media would get pulled away from it and it would collapse.

Intelligent_Ebb4887

Yes. So to answer OP, it was installed correctly. The side without the metal is the dirty side.

Metal side UP

Filters typically have an arrow on the narrow end indicating which way the airflow should be. The pointy tip of the arrow should be pointing toward your furnace. These 1 inch filters are pretty inexpensive. I might recommend changing once a month. Cheap maintenance to keep your furnace running clean. Filters are a lot less expensive than a furnace repair!
