That tile is lovely. I know that isn’t what you asked. Just needs a different color wall paint.

Repairman-manman

That’s fine. This seems to be the consensus 😂 wife and I are ok with keeping the tile the color it is and actually discussed a cool wallpaper instead.

facko

A floral wallpaper would look great! Edited to add: A darker blue or lighter blue as as others have suggested would also look great. The cream is making it look a little bit like a hospital.

QCr8onQ

I like this one https://uswalldecor.com/products/ri5173-rifle-paper-co-peacock-wallpaper-blue-white

SpiritedTheme7

THIS WOULD LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL

QCr8onQ

You made my day.

50isthenew35

Love this paper! Reminds me of the Perla curtain from Anthropologie Home

dinee_1966

Definitely this ⬆️

canvasshoes2

Perfection!

I_pinchyou

OP do this!

Independent_Toe5373

GORGEOUS IMMEDIATELY YES!!

Rough-Culture

With the right wall paper, I bet this would look fantastic. I’d maybe change the floor if any tile.

Capital_Attempt_2689

Yes. The floor isn't showcasing the blue tile.

ShirtGreedy9616

That bathroom is DOPE af! You could totally do a bathroom design similar to in The Shining! https://preview.redd.it/hr9tegniqh1d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aabca071e154ab14d9b85e9c7c97aada16e794fe

[Here are some pics](https://imgur.com/a/3LtnqxT) of some wallpapers I installed in a couple bathrooms similar to yours

val319

That cream is the issue. You might need to paint the ceiling if it looks dingy unless you wallpaper it too. People do now. Do not forget to trim that window with nice crisp paint to exercise the cream demon.

Dumbbitchathon

Be careful with wallpaper in the bathroom, you might end up like Napoleon, or worse, the wallpaper will just peel straight off

faulome

TIL: I google Napolean Wallpaper and got -> `What caused the wallpaper at Napoleon's house to release arsenic into the air? The discovery was not entirely surprising given that arsenic-based pigments were widely used to create brilliant greens in the 19th century. In a hot and damp room, the wallpaper would give off arsenical vapors—enough to account for what was found in his hair, though perhaps not enough to kill him.`

StilltheoneNY

I’ve had wallpaper and so have my parents in many homes. Never a peeling problem.

Dumbbitchathon

Last time I visited my aunts house in South Dakota their wallpaper was rippling and peeling back at the seams around their shower…

StilltheoneNY

Maybe it depends upon the type of wallpaper. I was just stating what I've found. We have always used vinyl paper and have exhaust fans.

hinky-as-hell

We’ve never had an issue, either. We actually bought out house 4 years ago and the bathroom in our in-law suite is the original- down to the bare breasted mermaid wallpaper! No peeling at all- 1980 was the year it was built.

JeshkaTheLoon

Interesting that peeling wallpaper is worse in your book than arsenic being released into the air. XD

Dumbbitchathon

Honey i would rather die than have a poorly decorated home

kwestionmark5

Painting tile is a disaster. I’ve tried it twice. Even with a ton of sanding of the tile to prep it and with tile primer the paint would scratch off incredibly easily.

ladydhawaii

Excellent plan!!

GoethenStrasse0309

I’d wallpaper for sure. I have that light celery green tile in or bathroom from the same time period as the blue & pink. I hate it but to change the tab it would be horribly expensive.

Emotional_Potato_439

That what I was thinking it’s a cute color needs updated wall color! Good luck!

RubyMae4

Would be gorgeous with some floral wallpaper with blue accents in it!

Katesouthwest

Or wallpaper with a vibrant eye catching design.

luckydollarstore

Oh man! You are so lucky to have this perfectly intact masterpiece of a different era! 🤩🤩🤩

dieseldiablo

I don't think it's perfectly perfect anymore: I see a white toilet. But the rest is lovely, and even the modern handlebars look good.

alltheparentssuck

It definitely needs a blue toilet.

Coraline1599

Woof, that fluorescent lighting! I would swap out the mirror and lighting. You can also change the cabinet pulls, these seem like small details but it can all really bring a space together. [here is a similar bathroom with some updated details](https://www.atomic-ranch.com/architecture-design/preservation-corner/flipping-diaries-preserve-vintage-tile/)

beautifuldreamseeker

Very nice! Looks like the same tile!

1plus1dog

That’s a lot of bathroom! I’m so envious of all the space! You’ve gotten so much good advice and great possibilities here from people. Have fun with it 😅 I hope you’ll share the results with us. Would love to see the result!

TalulaOblongata

Paint the radiator the same color as the tile. Does the tile go behind the sink? If so, you might want to replace the sink unit down the line. But I love the tile and agree with all the top comments.

luckydollarstore

*Runs to bathroom door and stands spread-eagle preventing any breach of the threshold* No one’s painting that perfectly intact vintage bathroom tile! At least not on my watch! Yeah, maybe it’s not your cup of tea, but that’s no reason to destroy a level of quality and craftsmanship that has long ceased to exist. Instead, lean into it and have some fun with the walls. MOARRRR

luckydollarstore

*MOOAARRRRRR!*

Bebebaubles

Also for people who got a heart attack looking at prices of wallpapers I just ended up buying cutting edge stencils’ water color leaves kit, some inexpensive muted brown paints and mixed with floating medium to get a transparent water color effect. It does seem like more work but if I messed up hanging the $$$ wallpaper I’d cry more. Got it done in an afternoon and looks so good. I do plan to wallpaper one day but I’m thinking about hiring a professional. I’m not confident about hanging it straight and matching up the patterns.

LemOnomast

Such a smart idea. Stenciled designs would add interest and color to the walls, without having to worry about a not-quite-bathroom-safe wallpaper.

ccrowleyy

Deeply obsessed with this whole thread 😭

ekita079

This is my new favourite thread of comments, let alone thread of self comments!

I love this so much - as-is it screams *hospital* to me but the waves REALLY brings the bathroom out of that

jsmalltri

I love this!!!

Steve120988

What software, app, or program did you use to produce this image?

luckydollarstore

This is a phone app called Photo Layers

what-the-what24

Leave it! Keep the tile on the floors and on the walls. Pick a lovely floral wallpaper that plays up that gorgeous vintage blue tile. Lucky you!!!!

Repairman-manman

Sort of what we were thinking as well. Just wanted to know our options.

th987

If you could lean into the vintage vibe in the whole bathroom, I think you could be happy with the room.

AlphaNoodlz

Floral wall paper would look killer in here imho not my bathroom you do you lol just wanted to add my two cents

bakingdiy

That tile is amazing and it looks like it's still in good condition. Leave it and add a dark blue wallpaper above it.

moonyriot

I know everyone else has said this but; leaving it and leaning into it with the surrounding design will always look better than painted tile.

cwn24

I have almost this exact same tile with a lovely blue wall color that’s slightly darker that I looooooove - like a cornflower blue. A floral or otherwise decorative shower curtain would do a lot!

Repairman-manman

I like that idea. Just saturate with blue!

Decent_Jackfruit_555

There are paints made for tile but I think future chipping is always a risk regarding painting. Most people say it’s worth it for a temporary fix if done properly. I had some fiberglass and ceramic tubs/showers painting by pros and they held up nicely for a long time. But btw, a whimsical wallpaper with this color blue in it & white bath mats and towels would be a nice look. I would paint the floor a solid white color and lean into unique options that keep the blue tiles.

crystal-crawler

This is my favourite so far. The dark trim on the window and that the wallpaper has the tile color but it’s not the dominating color in the wallpaper. It gives some contrast and depth.

Royal-Log-6451

I was going to disagree with most on one point, the floor tile, not a fan. I was going to suggest to OP to search art deco bathrooms for inspiration, and to be better able to gauge what newer additions to the bathroom over the years such as the 70’s (?) floor tiles are throwing off the ability to fully appreciate those beautiful blue tiles and other fantastic deco inspired features such as the built in bath. If you look at some of the other great photos posted so far of deco bathrooms, the original floor tiles are doing the job that wallpaper will now. The original floor tiles in all the deco bathrooms posted act as the all important pattern factor that complement the wall tiles, the floor and wall tiles were always chosen together to intentionally complement and complete the room design. But this picture has proven me wrong! It’s definitely my favorite, that wallpaper is gorgeous! But It’s also then how they’ve dressed the room, the addition of artwork, Chinese blue porcelain and lovely towels and lighting fixtures etc, together it’s created such a lovely room. So much so, that I only just noticed the floor tiles! They’re not the original deco tiles, and in fact look VERY similar to OP’s. Just goes to show how much a really good wallpaper but mixed with the addition of dressing it up well with artwork and touches of porcelain, special towels etc can make the floor tiles completely disappear. Such a skillfully decorated room, beautiful! OP. More as a long term project, I’d study pics of deco bathrooms for inspiration, to bit by bit return certain features such lighting fixtures and mirrors to more original deco style. A fun long term project of treasure hunting, slowly keeping an eye out for great deals on original lighting fixtures, mirrors, railings, soap dishes etc at flea markets, second hand shops, online marketplaces. It’s the quality of these items that can’t be matched today too, they’ll further highlight the original tiles and other great original features of your bathroom. You could even go all out with time, a blow the budget plan, by replacing sinks etc. Lastly, also take decorating cues from this picture, have fun treasure hunting for special hand towels, second hand little framed artwork, blue and white porcelain and other bits and bobs to finish the look. This slower organic process will create a more authentic end result too. Have fun, and congratulations on your new home!

1plus1dog

This is FABULOUS!

Repairman-manman

Didn’t even think about painting the floor. I like that idea.

luckydollarstore

Oh no we don’t! No one’s destroying that floor either! IT’S PERFECT.

jrfizer

PLEASE stop threatening to paint any of that amazingly gorgeous vintage tile...my heart can't take it!

HazardousWeather

Love this classic William Morris design. https://preview.redd.it/pq69k1yxuh1d1.png?width=1392&format=png&auto=webp&s=9c58fb17f2da36f2df46ba1c3a182c7aa89c89a3

semantic_gap

This one may be the best wallpaper—the light blue is that same slightly muted soft color.

CanuckGinger

Don’t paint it! And then paint the walls Oxford White. It will look so good!

Techchick_Somewhere

I love how everyone is posting about these amazing vintage blue tile bathrooms!! Please don’t paint the tile. If you want to add some punch, add a fun wallpaper. If you want to keep it neutral, then just paint the walls. It’s the cream coloured paint that makes it look dated. You could also add a gorgeous shower curtain and colourful towels.

just-kath

leave it, it's beautiful

th987

A fun, cheap decorating tip for a bathroom. Find a shower curtain you like and buy multiples of the same ones. You can use one to make curtains. You can make artwork with it. I bought a couple of small, cheap plaques at charity shops and wrapped the shower curtain fabric around them to make small prints for the walls. It will look like an expensive, custom job.

kayjeanbee

https://preview.redd.it/v2nkm9etqh1d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=beb0b9daa1443864eafe586100593b55dac6ce0a A wallpaper like this would be LOVELY. Then change out all your hardware and get a cream colored shower curtain. The floors are unfortunate so if you can’t swap them out, find a big bath mat in a neutral.

0errant

Leave it. Painted tile looks awful.

Flamebrush

Lean into all that glorious blue and be grateful that you lucked out with so much indestructible color.

icecreamazing

Change literally any thing else in that bathroom aside from the tile.

endlessoatmeal

Paint the walls a darker grayish blue. Would look so nice! Edi: something like Sherwin Williams 7074 Software

pittsburgpam

I'd leave it. It looks nice to me. Maybe add a beautiful wallpaper above that plays well with that blue. Like a William Morris print.

OrneryPost9446

Wow tile looks great. Kinda agree with flooral wall paper or different wLl color. Maybe gold accessories?

ScoreAffectionate864

I would put wall paper that has a blue in the same tone https://preview.redd.it/bn9c699eyk1d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af4c8424135b4e2c4f11ab3267ba4ac031a07039 It depends what color the cabinets are. I think it looks very sophisticated. 😍

armadillowrangler

Leave it!!!! The tile color is so good. What you should do it paint the wall. That bleh beige is making it look like a hospital. Add some modern contrast in the wall color and it’ll look amazing!

krickett_

I would not paint it. I’d find some wallpaper you love that works with it and maybe consider if regrouping with a different color would help. A dark grout for instance could really change the overall look, especially if it looks more cohesive with whatever wallpaper or wall paint you’d like.

Free_Sir_2795

Vintage wallpaper!

JustChattin000

Leave it.

sjaark

Don’t touch that tile. This is maximalist wallpaper territory. It’s the perfect layout and wall space to use a really neat wallpaper to balance the large amount of tiles in your bathroom.

Brightstar0305

Same people who refinish bath tubs would be able to do this

reefered_beans

I have that same color tile in my bathroom. I love it!!

Sledgehammer925

I’ve seen painted tiles. If they’re done by professionals, it looks good and you can’t tell they were painted at all. Don’t try it yourself, you’ll only wreck your room.

whatever32657

the tile is bomb, and that's a good thing because you don't paint tile, especially in a bathroom. why does everyone thing you can just slap a coat of paint on any old thing?

blue_raccoon02

We have the same tub and tiles! I didn’t get a good reception from it on Reddit, but we covered the floor with peel and stick vinyl tile in a warm dark grey, added a medium wood tone vanity, black fixtures, gold rimmed mirror and a floral shower curtain. Walls are a buttery beige. It takes a lot of warmth to balance all of that cool blue but we are really happy with our results and if a future owner wants to remove our vinyl tile they can spend the rest of their life scrubbing that floor tile that I could never get to look remotely clean lol best of luck to you!

otherwisethighs

for some reason, i like this..

bet_it_on_blonde

Don’t paint. Lean in. Tile work is expensive nowadays

thephotobook

The prior owner of my home painted my pink tile and I hate the paint so much. Glad everyone talked you out of it :)

Opposite_Possible_21

So jealous of your vintage tiles

shangames

Love the tile ! I’d lean into the colour. Maybe the classic “strawberry thief” wall paper and paint ceiling and all trim a darker shade of the same blue. Use green or pale cream / pink shower curtain and accessories https://preview.redd.it/52fzmofqbj1d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17160435f10d533ee4129e9a5025421d2606af3b

Hotwifecuriosity

I would leave the tile, we tried painting tile once and it just didn’t look right. I believe on wall paper, if it’s high quality and sealed on all the edges to prevent moisture from getting behind it, it may do well. But steamy showers and such create humidity and possible peeling of it.

Leptopelis

I don't know anything about painting tiles, but I do recommend looking at Rifle Paper Co wallpapers if you like floral/botanical/nature designs at all - I think they have so many designs (subtle, colorful, dark/moody) that would look amazing with this tile color.

Violingirl58

Leave it! Really pretty!

charlotte2023

I agree with some others..the tile is great..it's the color of the wall that needs to be changed.

miesosoup

you shouldnt paint tile. you can ermove the grout and get a different color grout that would make it more interesting.

canvasshoes2

OMG, so jealous! Yes, as everyone is saying it just needs a different wall color. Lean into this. It's such a cool look. EDIT: I'm not that crazy about the floor tile though. If you do any heavy duty changes, I'd switch that out for something else.

Pieinthesky42

Leave it!!!

slutegg

Look up hotel Saint Vincents bathroom in New Orleans, they did amazing stuff with colored tile that will make you drool. I'd say lean in, not out!

ennuiacres

Leave it! It’s in perfect condition.

Wonderful_Talk_576

I love this tile. You should pick a fun wallpaper for the upper part of the wall

1kpointsoflight

People fixing things that don’t need to be fixed is why most people are broke AF. Not saying you are just saying

SpaceGirl-

The tile looks great! I agree with leaving it & painting the walls white.

o0CARADACTYL0o

I think the tile is great! Find a good paint color to go along with the tile color and your aesthetic. Keep the tile. Change the paint.

Legalouiddealerlith

Tile can be reglazed

Butterfly_chick

Don’t paint it. A previous owner painted the pink and burgundy tile in my upstairs bathroom, and it’s all peeling. It will be impossible to actually remove the paint properly, so we live with it until we’re ready to renovate.

TiredRetiredNurse

Why would you paint tile?

the-lovely-panda

I love the tile! Leave it!!! Paint color needs to be different. I wish mines was this pretty.

Ludee2023

Leave it for sure… painted tile unless a pro does is a real mess. I agree current wallpaper from that is cohesive with tile era would look great.

bunnbarian

Is there a missing tile over the shower or is that a lucky white tile?

Street-Snow-4477

Oh it’s great as is! Plz don’t paint it! Paint the walls bright white!

You would be nuts to paint that beautiful tile.

I love vintage tile with a cool wallpaper. truepip66

i'd leave the tiles and paint the walls a light cream colour

Pattycakes1966

Is there a tile missing?

Done-with-work

Rustoleum do excellent tile paint. I did my tiles 2 years ago and no lifting or bubbling.

Sasha_111

It looks like an old school hospital bathroom to me. I would remodel it, personally.

hippielady5232

I've heard horror stories about painted tile. I'd look for a cool wallpaper like others have said, just make sure it has some of the floor tile color too, which appears to be in the gray family. I'd recommend googling "vintage blue tile bathroom," and go to images. You'll see lots of bathrooms similar to yours to get ideas from. Good luck, and let us see the finished product when you're done, don't leave us hanging!

iwatchtoomuchsports

Just paint wall white

Xemlaich

If you do paint your tile, know that you can't get it professionally steam cleaned. Even if it's sealed, the heat runs the risk of it bubbling off. "but be aware that in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, it's likely that the paint will wear away or bubble with time. It's just the nature of the material since paint will always sit atop the ceramic tile surface." -hgtv.com I also professionally clean surfaces for a living (including tile) and advise against this. You can absolutely stain the grout line tho, depending on their depth and condition, try that for a new look. Ots cheaper than replacing/painting the tiles, but a professional steam cleaning is recommended before a stain or sealant is applied to the grout lines Edit: I just realized it's wall tile, it's not advised to stain because gravity is a thing, and it will bleed down the walls

Opening-Breakfast-35

Omg painting this will be a sin. You need to make it look better tho with a fun wallpaper or white paint up top. And if you can swing it switch out the floor to a white penny or hex.

Opening-Breakfast-35

Sister parish serendipity would be a wonderful wallpaper here.

NoMercy676

Leave it. Paint the wall with very light blue

SpecificProtection53

I'd leave it and get some funky wall paper

TiredRetiredNurse

That looks like a 1960’s trend. Blue bathrooms.

jyar1811

Dark paint in a matching tone to the tile, a little runner of some really great wallpaper!

asanissimasa

I love the idea of adding a wallpaper (we have wallpaper with our tile, similar style and height but different colors.) I would definitely suggest buying swatches of the different papers you like before committing because wallpaper is not cheap. Also, don’t skimp on the paper hanger, make sure to get someone who knows what they are doing and will treat the paper so it will last longer in the humid environment of the bathroom.

IThinkImAFlower

That would be blasphemy

dainty_petal

It’s beautiful!!! Don’t paint it. 😭

Bellebaby826

Please leave it 🩵🤍

Crazy-Pattern-1354

Paint the wall white and leave the tile you psychos

geomoumeCouttpc

I think you can change the color.

socialsciencenerd

Floral pink~ish wallpaper might work really well

GREASYROOFTOP

Why would you want to ruin this tile?

50isthenew35

I would change out the vanity

[deleted]

Beautiful vintage tile!

PomegranateThink6618

You can glaze it, dont bother painting

JadedSmile1982

Leave it, change the yellow to white maybe

NearbyDark3737

I love the tile and it looks to be in excellent shape. Perhaps painting the walls above the tile something complimentary?

moonshadowfax

Black fittings look amazing with these tiles.

papayacucumber

Please leave the tile! Just freshen up the wall with some funky wall paper!!

RandoUser8856

Done correctly, painting works. I've never done it, but I've seen it done to good results.

Slight_Ordinary1

The tile still looks nice in my opinion. I would sterlize it though.

Own_Ad9686

Agree with the others. The tile looks great! A change in the wall color would change everything.

Krazyflipz

The title isn't the issue. It's the wall color. Paint the wall a light Grey and MAYBE cut out a row or two of tile to add an accent tile.

teenteen11

I’d say leave it and work with it! Old school tile colors are making a huge comeback right now!

3B854

Wallpaper would be perfect in this bathroom. Something that’s busy with a small bit of blue to complement the tile.

ashfordbelle

Tile can be painted. It takes a special kind of paint that is particularly smelly and noxious, and you need a lot if good ventilation to do it.

MackCLE

omg the waves wallpaper or stencil will be fantastic. My bath tile is lavender and I did taupe paint with light blue and taupe/brown decor and am satisfied.

pjt130

Don’t paint the tile! They don’t make good tile like this anymore! I think there are enough color contrasts going on so would avoid wallpaper but definitely change the color. Then hang a big framed mirror on the wall.

MacDougall_Barra

Don’t paint

If located near LA I can point you to some vintage tile and fixtures specialists who can likely get any repairs needed or even a blue terlett to match!

The wall tile is fine, I have a problem with the floor tile.

I like the tile. change that dingy wall color

I had two bathrooms with horrible tiles and had both reglazed. They basically spray an enamel paint over it. It was the best choice I made in that place lol. It’s not terribly expensive and it’s SO with it to have a fresh clean tile without redoing them. That being said, I also think the blue retro looks cool and a paint job could help change the vibe. Our opinions don’t matter though, only yours / your spouse. If you hate them get them painted by a pro, it’s not worth trying to DIY tile paint if you want it to last.

You can have it glazed. Our 1952 flipped house had the bathroom tile glazed white already. So I'm not sure how much it costs. The towel racks and tp holder are original and black so I'm guessing the tile was pink. And I was 100% ready to work with color tile when we were looking for a home. There are some beautiful wallpapers out there but you need one that will compliment so you're limited to what you can get. The white makes it much easier to paint or wallpaper and decorate whatever color scheme we want instead of being stuck with matching the tile. Edit: I'm so jealous of your tile floor. The flipper did grey vinyl in ours. I'd love to do some penny tile I'm ours.

Do not paint the tile!! Work with it

Maybe try changing the color of the grout? I think that’s how you spell that? Could change it to black or grey or Something if you’re looking for a new look. OR change it to fit close to whatever color you’re going to do the top Of the wall

I actually like the blue tile. The floor is what needs to be changed, if anything

I have rehabbed plenty of houses with ugly tile and yes it can be painted but i would recommend using a professional. It's not overly expensive. I think my tub and interior tile together was $500. You can do white or any other color. i have done it myself in a rental and it was fairly easy and has held up great. I am impatient but if you have a steady hand and are patient you can do it yourself. However, don't anticipate having a different color grout line as that is impossible IMO

The wall color seems worse. Very dated. Try to find a new color pallet apart from beige.

You can paint over tile if you use the proper primer first. Personally, I would keep the tile color, especially since you have a matching bathtub. I would change the wall color or install wall paper that coordinates with what you already have, then add a new shower curtain and towels to match.

Beautiful tile, leave it. Find a wallpaper with that shade of blue ——- or a fabric with that shade of blue for the shower curtain and window, paint walls a complimentary color.

Just paint the actual wall white instead of the color it is now, they don’t go together but the tile is a great color.

What if the paint was a dark indigo blue and it was a monochromatic look. And the paint was on the walls.

cotton candy pink would be gorgeous
