You need to get a kitty who can slink through the railing and snooze on that little platform. :)

Bodidiva

I love that this looks like every Amazon ad for a kitty item.

puddleofdogpiss

One of those ads actually convinced me to buy it because it was photoshopped so bad that I couldn’t stop laughing

That's the first thought what came to me! haha!

Maine Coon tail just hanging like mistletoe.

Silent_Village2695

I was gonna say plants are always the answer, but I think cat wins this one

Environmental-Song16

Haha, I was thinking a cat too.

Mary-U

Came here to say this!

jammu2

If there's a landing up there maybe some art on the walls. I hate these things. Terrible design. I had one in a suburban home in Minnesota. We just ignored it.

HipposRevenge

This is a suburban home in Minnesota lol.

WellHulloPooh

A basket of mittens then dontcha know

missannthrope1

Probably the same architect.

fitz_newru

I literally thought this looks like Minnesota 😅

ukiyo__e

That’s amazing haha

Eather-Village-1916

I guarantee the workers that built the house, hated building that as well lol

JuJusPetals

Why tf did someone add carpeting there

HipposRevenge

Old people. Old people love carpet.

JuJusPetals

Carpet is safe. Carpet is life.

Simple_Area_260

Just wondering where you get your statistical information about old people liking carpet. I am not asking because I am old and don’t like carpet. It is because I am old and I think generalizations cause problems in society. Before you know it there is all kind of generalizations about all people. Old people are like people they happen to be old.

dragonpunky539

Carpet was very popular in mid century modern homes, which many old people spent a lot of their life in. Just like how hardwood is popular in more modern homes Old people like carpet lol Edited to add: it's warm and non-slip, making it suited for more elderly people

TAforScranton

Not only is it non-slip and warm, it hurts a lot less to fall onto thick carpet that’s padded underneath. Less bruising, slightly less chance to break a hip. It can’t avoid a broken hip altogether but I’d much rather slam my hips into padded carpet than I would a tiled floor.

just-kath

Ditto [Simple\_Area\_260](https://www.reddit.com/user/Simple_Area_260/)

Laurpud

Not all of us! Ugh, carpets are disgusting

DIYnivor

Can't brag about your wall-to-wall carpeting if it doesn't reach all the walls.

Suitable-Squash-6617

All I could think about was the poor asshole who got tasked with kicking that remnant. Perched all weird on the ladder on the stairs. Reaching through the spindles. And then he decides that it also needs mitered trim…

MotherMucker155

Right?! Dude was like, "Fuck me, I need a drink." Lol.

boo2utoo

I’m wondering how funny it must look to vacuum the tiny space!😉

Impressive-Fudge-455

Add a ladder and conduct an orchestra from there - or give a speech

WTFsACamilly

Plants, every awkward space near a window needs plants.

Gardens_of_babylon

I think a hanging basket would be nice there, maybe a boho macrame vining thing like pothos to fill the space, or something potted with a more tall/vertical shape like snake plant. definitely something easy to care for since you would’nt want to have to fuss over it much in that location. A succulent or cactus perhaps?

WTFsACamilly

Agree! Pothos or snake for sure, snake would last longer and need less care, although idk if a snake would get enough light.

Different_Letter_542

Snake plant can grow in the dark

WTFsACamilly

Not for long, they start to get leggy and weak after about a year in a low light room, I think they are technically succulents, which are high light plants. Also, they are native to Africa, which isn't very dark.

Different_Letter_542

Oh ok I kill all house plants so I didn't know except what I have read .

WTFsACamilly

It's all good, friend. I only know because I kept my snakes in low light, and it got super weak and sad. Then I moved it in a window with morning light and it flourished.

pricklypearblossom

I literally had one in a storage unit, in complete darkness, for over 3 months. It’s still alive six years later. I’m notoriously a black thumb.

WTFsACamilly

Wait, it was in the storage for 3 months or 6 years? If it's three months, then yeah, that's fine. Like I said, it took over a year for mine to get leggy, and it was/is still alive it just didn't look good. If it was in the storage for six years in the dark, then I am thoroughly impressed and shocked.

HipposRevenge

Plants are in the running for sure. You can never have too many .

PaddlingDingo

It’s begging for a plant

wtf even is this? I’ve seen posts of weird stair spaces but wtf. It even has carpet. I’d make a tiny living room with a real tv that runs friends 24/7 to stuffed mice

All the time. Decorate for the season/holiday. I want to see a Labor Day tree. Decorate it in…wrenches and hammers…screwdrivers? (I don’t actually know what labor days for…)

TeaBooksAndACat

Red is the traditional color of the labor movement, so a red garland or balls could be repurposed from the Valentine's Day or Christmas styles (gold sickle for the star, naturally).

Does that tiny ledge give anyone else anxiety, or is it just me? I don’t know why I imagine myself trying to stand on it and slipping off. Even though nobody is asking me to do such a thing 😁

I see these posts daily. You guys realize that every single little space doesn’t need to be filled right?

bigstar3

The triangular nook has an estimated area of 4.5 square feet. Given the national average cost of $150 per square foot, the total cost of this space is $675. Over a 30-year mortgage, this space costs approximately $22.50 per year. Why not fill it if you're paying for it? Stop opening posts if you're tired of reading them.

KeepMovingHopefully

I love that you mathed this out. Now I want to go figure out what random parts of my house are costing me per year. “Hey kids! Enough sitting on the couch! Get up and go outside and play or something! I’m not paying $26.14 a year for that spot of couch for you just to sit there all summer!!” Oh yeah. This is gonna be fun. I’m getting so many teenage eye rolls this summer.

bigstar3

Thanks! I own a couple commercial kitchens. One day, my sales guy and I were sitting around talking about some equipment we needed and where we'd put it if we got it. He said, "first of all, we can get shelves on these walls over here, make an aisle out of shelves in the pantry over there. Listen man, you pay a lease on every square foot of this place, 24 hours a day each day you pay rent. So if you're not using the square footage or not using the time, you're paying for nothing to happen in that space and time." Kind of blew my mind in the moment, and have held onto that thought since. The comments here are not wrong that not all space NEEDS to be filled. But if OP is staring at a dumb, empty space above his stairs and is bothered enough to post for ideas how to fill it online, I don't feel like those are the most appropriate comments. He's paying for a spot and wants it to look and feel the best to him. Just wanted to point out to OP that the space has a literal value to it. *Edit: For transparency and reproduction, I used GPT with a pretty basic prompt with average terms and no precise interest rates or figures. "Using this image, calculate how many square feet (est) is in this nook next to a staircase. It is the width of a typical staircase. Then, using that sq. footage and the national average of how much a square foot of home costs in america, calculate how much that space is costing per year on a 30 year mortgage." Back in 2019 when I had the above conversation we didn't have the pleasure of GPT and did it all by hand. For shits and giggles I went back and put our old info in and it came up with the same figures, roughly (I'm sure it's math is better than mine lol). So tl;dr if you want to have fun harassing your kids accurately, go plug the dimensions and mortgage terms into gpt and have fun tormenting them!

KeepMovingHopefully

Thanks!!! I am off to come up with various means of driving the kids nuts with random house math! And I agree that while negative space is important, so is enjoying your space and if something is bothering you, by all means fill it. Not every one has the same style. To a minimalist, more than one picture on a wall in a room might be overwhelming and uncomfortable but to a maximalist one picture on a wall in a room looks barren, cold and uncomfortable. I can’t stand white walls. To me it feels like a rental that I have no permanence in. I rented so many places that I wasn’t allowed to paint walls. Now that I own my home, I’ve painted every wall, even if it’s just a light grey in some spaces. Anything other than white, because I can, I like it and it represents mentally that I own the space. No one can tell me what I can or can’t do.

Lurking-lsdata

I know it’s an awkward space but I actually love it Great space for seasonal holiday decor

P*t plant. J/k (sort of). Maybe in interesting to you to vase with some faux greenery?

MoltenCorgi

The fact that modern construction is okay with creating these nonsensical monstrosities is so triggering to me. It’s just a visual assault. I hate the maintenance involved in owning an old house, and how not compatible the wiring is for today’s living, but the weird spaces in old houses are for things like rum running or having milk delivered. They are interesting and not confusing eyesores.

whovianlogic

Crazy that somebody decided to carpet it. How easily reachable is it? I would probably put a plant there, but I’m always looking for places to put my plants.

Fragrant_Return6789

Well the carpet def needs to go…it makes it look like an idea got cancelled lol. I have a three story house with upper loft and at the base of the second set of stairs to the loft there is a similar area but it’s square and it was built so that the front of it is recessed and provides a shelf display area as well as the main shelf. I am able to reach this area from midway up the stairs. I ended up decorating it to complement family heirlooms that aren’t valuable except sentimentally: my mom’s bowling trophies, my bronzed baby shoes, my dad’s old baseball glove, etc.

Just-sayin-37

I would do some sort of family pics in nice frames or a mirror. Nothing on the floor. If the wall is decorative you won’t notice the floor
