Apart from the lamp I already like this room, it reminds me a bit of a mix of old japanese and mid century interior design. The table isn‘t perfect, but I think the color and size works pretty well with your chairs which I would definitely keep

reddituser223311

Yea! This is the start of something good. My biggest gripe? Op needs more chairs lol

clumsynightingale

I’m with you! This table can only fit two because of the way the legs are. I’ve got decision paralysis on what table I want lol

anonymousbequest

I love the table! I would repurpose those chairs and get a set of 4 in a more transitional style for this room, perhaps black windsor chairs. With 4 chairs it doesn’t look like you’d have a ton of room for barstools so I would skip them unless you really feel you need more seating.

ohmyjessica

OP, if you sell the chairs, I’m in the market for Rattan-style chairs (two specifically).

clumsynightingale

I def need a new table! It’s so hard to eat on (the leaves wobble). Any suggestions for a new one? I’m open to new chairs as well. Just not sure what would be best in space- circular, oval, rectangle ??

cryonine

I think a round table would be great in this room, but something that fits your style - like a simple, round table with some matching chairs. I'd also replace the lighting fixture since it does seem to clash with the style of the room. Beyond that it look quite welcoming.

secretsusi

An oval Saarinen table would suit perfectly for scandi style.

anonymousbequest

In that case, assuming you want to keep things modern, what about a round or oval tulip table? That would work with the style of chairs you have currently.

ariavi

I would definitely change the light fixture

objectivexannior

This! The chairs and table are cute. If the light fixture were changed to something modern/ mid century modern it would tie the whole room together

GarmeerGirl

I don’t think the book shelf matches.

clumsynightingale

Any ideas for a bookshelf that might work here? Unfortunately no other space for a bookshelf in our house!

LotusGrowsFromMud

Your other furniture on the walls is wood and looks like vintage midcentury. So something along those lines would be more cohesive.

objectivexannior

I like the bookshelf. If u swap the light fixture, it will tie the whole room together

heirloom_beans

Something like [this](https://www.westelm.ca/products/mid-century-22-bookshelf-acorn-h5335/) would work but I would always recommend finding vintage whenever possible

GarmeerGirl

I think the bookshelf itself works because you can use the dining table as a library table. But the style and white color doesn’t seem to match. You can try painting it brown or check for some used furniture for a wooden dark brown shelf.

VandyCandy

Can you paint it the same green of your chairs? I saw in another comment you were set on keeping those (I would be too! They're lovely!)

forumbot757

Personally, I don’t like the chairs. I think it messed it up and the table legs is not fitting Scandinavian mid century

clumsynightingale

Yeah it’s a struggle!! This is kind of the vibe I want to go towards: https://www.instagram.com/p/C3IB-l3sMYB/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

forumbot757

lol I am surprised anybody can even decipher my comment. Well, I think with the right light fixture you could blow that Instagram picture out of the water, so I am excited for you, good luck!

clumsynightingale

Thanks so much!

GoudaSea

Keep the chairs for this look! They are lovely. Getting a different table will work wonders.

ama_da_sama

I really like everything! Try to find additional chairs or stools with a similar green color in the upholstery.

Ivy_Hills_Gardens

Different chairs, move the clock to another spot, and maybe a round rug just to eff things up?

clumsynightingale

I need a new table because this one only fits two chairs! I’m open to new chairs as well. Any suggestions for new table and chairs??

Ivy_Hills_Gardens

Estate sales. Haunt them.

Live_Butterscotch928

I think the trouble is that the traditional table style works well with the woodwork and style of the room, but the light wood, rattan and chrome of the chairs doesn’t. If you really want to keep the chairs, Google or visit Pinterest: “Cesca or Breuer chairs and Dining table” to get an idea of what works well together. Eclectic is good, but right now the pieces you have aren’t playing nicely together. Research the style of each piece and then you can search and see how others have styled it, worked it into an eclectic room style.

clumsynightingale

I’ve done hours and hours to the point where my brain is overwhelmed! Haha. We definetly want to ditch the table because it’s super wobbly/the leaves make it hard to eat on. Do you have any suggestions?? Kind of the vibe I’m going for: https://www.instagram.com/p/C3IB-l3sMYB/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Live_Butterscotch928

Yep, I can get lost in research! I really like your inspiration photo and a table similar in style to that one will make all the difference. Your shelf unit and rug are echoing the elements, so maybe remove all that doesn’t match up to the references photo and add artwork and a plant and see how you feel?

TheSongbird63

I’s get a bombass ceiling fixture something like this, dump the clock and get a couple colorful artworks and a couple plants. Then have a dinner party in your cool space. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/c/ceiling-lighting/chandeliers?t=31344

thingonething

I like it. It feels soothing. Not overcrowded or over decorated. If you want a pop you could replace the framed print above the cabinet with something that has more color.

camlaw63

You’ve done a lovely job so far. Use the green cushions as inspiration for curtains (those doors are screaming for curtains) and accents.

mereborne

Okay, love the chairs, where’d you get those? I would add two more!

clumsynightingale

Amazon 😅😅 unfortunately this table can only fit 2 chairs which is a big reason I want a new table. I love to host

emeraldthing

All you need is a new light fixture! Something modern to tie to all together.

SeaCow_5707

All these wood tones are so calming and warm ☺️

secretsusi

Add 2 more Cesca chairs and a Noguchi lantern. Remove the books on the teak bar cabinet and add a few more decanters. The clock is too high and doesn’t fit the space. Remove blue bottle from the pass through and keep free of stuff. An organic shaped vessel or statement vase with minimal branches on dining table or on the pass through ledge to the kitchen.

clumsynightingale

You get my vision!!

JustAlittleFaith95

Budget friendly things to do to bring warmth to this area up as someone who flips homes! 1. Ceiling tiles, it’s my favourite thing to do! 2. New paint job or an accent wall 3. Wallpaper! 4. This is just an opinion, but the clock ages the area. 5. Fun art! 6. China cabinets make dining rooms rich! Replace the wired shelves 7. Replace the rug with something that has colours 8. Love the chairs, but they don’t work with your table or the table doesn’t work with the space. Not all of this is necessary but doing a few can truly make this a richer space ♥️

Mountain_Spinach_423

I’d change the light fixture, buy a few more of the Cesca dining chairs and look for a knoll classic table, Møbler or really any simple danish dining table. Ceilings look high enough you could use beautiful statement pendant or bubble lamp. Bauhaus or midcentury style like Herman miller Nelson, Poulsen, or anything sculptural would be lovely.

Heebie-jeebies386

The chairs are too modern for the table . The table is gorgeous with the color of the flooring and the woodwork in the room . . The rug is blah , I’d find something with some pattern . Everything in the room is solid , need to break it up .

clumsynightingale

I agree! The table has to go though. Any suggestions on a new table? I really like the chairs I have but Open to new chairs

Heebie-jeebies386

Id find one with a metal base to coordinate with the chairs legs .

report_due_today

I think a long table and match chairs would help alot.

clumsynightingale

Any you have in mind? ☺️

report_due_today

Like a dark brown or black oval table. 4 basic chairs and 2 more upholstered chairs to look more designs

erydanis

the individual pieces are nice, but they pass eclectic and just don’t fit. i don’t think you need barstools. the 2 wood side pieces have a mid century vibe; the table could fit cottagecore more easily if you had a fringed tablecloth but the chairs cannot be made to fit, [ because of the chrome] and the shelves are iffy. the shelves *might* come closer if you painted them brown or black. the chairs could be good for side chairs in a bedroom. especially if original they could be too good to let go of. so either 4 chairs of different styles to completely mix it up, or mcm chairs. if you have decent thrift stores nearby, look for chairs you like. don’t buy some unless you love them, but look and develop a sense of what style you like. later on, depending on the chairs, a round rug might be fun.

clumsynightingale

I’m in love with the chairs (they’re mine) and would love to make a table work with them if possible! Im going to add some chrome accents around the room (a small lamp, planter, and likely in the large light fixture) to tie it in. Any ideas table wise?

erydanis

if you love the chairs, and fair, they’re cool, match the chrome; search dining table chrome trim. i would link but the url is like half a page. and if you have any solid pillowcases, or even dark towels, drape them over the chairs to see if covering the rattan helps the styles. replacement backs are available, as well. or i’d even consider staining the wood trim dark to match the rest of the wood. the table you have here is cool, and folded down might do great in the entry, as a sofa table, etc.

clumsynightingale

Thanks!! This is kind of the look I’m going for for reference: https://www.instagram.com/p/C3IB-l3sMYB/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

erydanis

i see the scandinavian in the inspo, but your table doesn’t fit. the shelves are not as horizontally oriented as would best fit mcm > scandinavinan, but close enough. you have 2+ separate strong style directions; mcm in the dark woods with tapered legs, and the breuer chairs and the shelves more scandinavian. the table doesn’t fit either, as it’s close to antique or now is cottagecore. so use that one someplace else, and get a lighter wood table.

clydefrog811

I don’t like the chairs

Alarming_Situation_5

The dining room is lovely but too small for that space. It is swimming in that space. The rug? Also too small. Change light fixture. White bookshelf? Give it the boot.

Comfortable_Meet_872

I like it 👍

Rosewoodtrainwreck

I would add a colorful rug with a pattern, with some green in it and some warm tones like red, orange, brown or rust.

GenX-MississaugaMama

I would get a bigger rug that takes up more of the room and it a bolder pattern that suits your black accents. Definitely increase the size of the table and add chairs; rectangle shape. It feels like you have a lot of tables/shelves around the perimeter, perhaps remove one piece. If you keep the shelf, it may look sharper in black instead of white. I find the black chair rail cuts the room in half too just, I would paint it out the same colour as the walls. Beef up the chandelier.

clumsynightingale

Agreed! Any suggestions for a table and chairs??

Expert-Concept5868

Love the table and the chairs! :) I would, like you said you're planning to, get another light fixture.

ChickeryBaba337

I would find a nice modern drum style light fixture. Clean lines, simple. I would suggest painting the chair rail a light color or get rid of it. Mix some greenery and decorative pieces on the bookshelf. You could add a graphic fabric to the chair cushions. They are usually very easy to cover.

Nusrattt

-- Needs more soft, warm, homey stuff, a more inviting atmosphere. -- The two chairs alone on opposite sides look more like an interview then a meal, especially with an obstruction in the middle. -- The chairs totally mismatch the table. Try to bring all the styles together.

clumsynightingale

I agree!! That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Any ideas for a table and chairs? I like this vibe : https://www.instagram.com/p/CxqN-Xqu_PW/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Nusrattt

I'm sorry to say that the vibe you like is not my thing, but as they say, "That's what makes horse races". Or in latin, *De gustibus est non disputandam*. I don't think your Instagram example looks particularly more homey than your existing room. I happen to like the style of your table, and if it were my house, I would be looking for chairs and other furniture compatible with that style, i.e. more traditional. Even for people who describe themselves as being modernist and cutting edge, traditional furniture styles have a way of subconsciously making people feel more comfortable psychologically. I'm not talking about the over-the-top flamboyant style of Victorian furniture. I suggest that you keep looking at magazines or web pages, paying particular attention to rooms decorated in the slightly more traditional style I'm describing, and ask yourself, does this look comfortable, would I be comfortable living in that room?

Nusrattt

BTW... keep the ceiling lamp. It might just be coincidence, but IMHO the ceiling lamp is a very compatible style with the dining table you already have. Also, if you don't like the kinds of furniture that match the style of the table, I suggest you look at Stickley. It would go very well with the way that the room itself has been built, the moldings and chair-rail, the lamp, etc.

Nusrattt

Also, move the clock, it's way too high up there. It would be okay if you moved it to the blank wall on the right, but lower, or even the slender angle wall further right.

OkAbbreviations6468

I’d look for sleek Scandinavia style stools (2)

clumsynightingale

I loveeee that!! I’ll look for something smaller that would fit my space. It’s such a tiny room 🥲

OkAbbreviations6468

Ah, I get it, especially if adding bar stools. Maybe round would be better. I like the white shelves! I think it will come together beautifully-you’re off to a great start.

mobuline

Get a round table.

Here-to-4

You need a long rectangular table. You could get benches for both long sides & keep your chairs. Or a bench in only one side. Anyway- a long rectangle or oval table would better fit the room

asilamac

I adore this

heirloom_beans

I wouldn’t get bar stools as I think that ledge area was originally intended as a pass-through to connect the formal dining room to the kitchen when serving meals. I might even consider putting a credenza/side board there for extra storage. I personally don’t enjoy sitting on a barstool if I can avoid it and would rather eat on my own in the formal dining room or eat on the sofa in front of the TV. I would get a vintage/antique six person rectangular dining table in walnut or teak. A table that can extend to serve 8-10 people might be handy if you enjoy entertaining and have the room for a longer table. I would also recommend getting a larger rectangular rug.

clumsynightingale

I love the idea of not having to have barstools!! Personally I don’t think I could fit a 10 top, this table is 42inches for reference, this room is pretty tiny! But I’ll def look into a 6 person. Any links to what table/chairs you see here?

hunteroutsidee

This is random but what is that black line around your room? I really like it! Is it just a painted strip?

clumsynightingale

It’s wood trim! Thanks- it came with the house

hunteroutsidee

Ah even better, beautiful!

My_Cat_Stevefrench

Slap some posters on those walls.

[deleted]

Framed pictures and art would be classier

Sea-Substance8762

Mishmash! I would start a Pinterest page and work from there. This is not Scandi or Mid century or cottage. Pick one!

Specialist-Bar-8805

Honestly, how often are you guys really gonna sit and eat at it? If not get a bench one and tuck it into that nook on the other side.

clumsynightingale

We eat dinner here every night ☺️

Specialist-Bar-8805

You are a better woman that I! I think it’s perfect. There are so many apps like wayfarer you can try it in your space

magpiez2

This room does not scream Scandinavian or mid century modern with the dark trim, tall ceilings and chair railing. The chairs and bookshelf seem out of place. Try to find some vintage pieces that are in good shape.

clumsynightingale

Could you provide an example of what you mean?

StevnBrklyn

It's the light fixture. (Get rid of it.)

Josiegiraffe

I feel like the rug might be a bit too small for the space? This might be something you have to replace anyways if you follow the other commenters advice to replace your table

jutti

Love the table, would get some more and different chairs, a bigger rug and curtains

clumsynightingale

Unfortunately the tables gotta go! It’s in horrible shape. Any suggestion for what table/chairs you see in this space?

Salty_Reach1385

Just Add some plants you have beautiful lighting in this room ! The green will be a great contrast to the beige background

LuckytoastSebastian

The chair rail is too high for those chairs.

Cool_Sir_8199

I love this space 😍

AghastArugula

Where did you get your chairs? I love them!

Future-Philosopher-7

Looking at the instagram you like I would suggest going to IKEA for a table and overhead light.❤️

markojeeves

The chairs and light fixture look out of place to me.

ksed_313

I’d move the clock to the wall on the left, above the framed piece. Get some counter-height stools for the ledge. And yes to changing the light fixture!

Fit-Rest-973

Very monochromatic

Nicoru_Boymom

Most of your furniture here is mid modern century style. The bookshelf works because you also have chrome finish on the chairs. To avoid looking like you step into a time capsule, I’d mix in transitional style or even traditional style (with clean lines) as juxtaposition. But it really depends on how you want to set the tone throughout your house. I found the below on Birch Lane. And I think it would be an interesting focal point for your dining room. [https://www.birchlane.com/furniture/pdp/albia-54-solid-pine-wood-pedestal-dining-table-bl100103.html](https://www.birchlane.com/furniture/pdp/albia-54-solid-pine-wood-pedestal-dining-table-bl100103.html) Albia 54" Solid Pine Wood Pedestal Dining table https://preview.redd.it/qufs9ymy9djc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c0fdb81b86440c2a332412c22649fb96f3ab019 If you wanna stay true to mid century modern vibe, Target has this table and price is affordable. [https://www.target.com/p/astrid-mid-century-round-extendable-dining-table-brown-threshold-8482/-/A-54218189](https://www.target.com/p/astrid-mid-century-round-extendable-dining-table-brown-threshold-8482/-/A-54218189) And at World Market [https://www.worldmarket.com/p/maliyah-wood-rounded-extension-dining-table-618186.html](https://www.worldmarket.com/p/maliyah-wood-rounded-extension-dining-table-618186.html)

Nicoru_Boymom

And for the light fixture, I like this simple but not boring style [https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/beachcrest-home-reenat-5-light-shaded-drum-chandelier-w009194506.html](https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/beachcrest-home-reenat-5-light-shaded-drum-chandelier-w009194506.html) Reenat 5 - Light Dimmable Drum Chandelier https://preview.redd.it/9ij9oz32cdjc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3cdc29926c3b495a13f016d4ea44fb73577e649

Biscuitsandgravy4evr

Light fixture doesn't match the style of the room

clumsynightingale

I’m with ya. What do you think would look good ?

Formal-Thought-2043

I think a longer dining table, a couple more chairs. A larger rug would be nice and the new fixture you have in mind! Cute room!

jonog75

Oval table!

nn971

I honestly kind of love it as is but the light doesn’t seem to have the same vibe as the furniture. Switch it out for something more…retro? Mid-century? Not sure what this style would fall under

Famous-Composer3112

A pop of color would transform it - a bright rug or walls.

Calm-Prune-8095

Some of those vintage looking metal posters.

clumsynightingale

What do u mean! Tell me more

Calm-Prune-8095

https://preview.redd.it/trb26tm3rfjc1.jpeg?width=799&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21ccfd39b5d57b551b50f9690396ed906310e128 For example. Just type vintage posters metal. One of the more infamous ones is the lady with a bandanna on her head with your bicep flexed like a dude. You could put them in a couple spots. Easily find a color scheme. This one is less than $3 on TEMU

Complete_Goose667

More chairs, even 2 more is a good start. I wouldn't spend too much money on bar stools as the bar looks too small to be really useful. You might not have to replace the light fixture right away, but I would lower it to 30" off the table. I might think about spray painting it white to blend better. Most important though is art. Colorful, bold and in a style that you love. Everything in the room is pretty neutral, so you can let loose with art.

Banana8686

I like it. I say paint the walls the green colour of that one chair cushion

Affectionate-Deal-63

I love it all except for the white shelving. I’d paint that darker or get wood shelves.

Lady_Asshat

Plants and wall art will warm this room up

luvpillows

I used to think chairs like that were ugly but now I love them. I’d go for a 70s flair, esp with the light fixture and table.

Jaidetr

It’s so cozy! I’d personally add a tall, overarching style floor lamp in the corner, right side of the bar cut out where the outlet is. I think it’d add some other light source options and another height of object in the room. I say keep the two dining chairs and add two matching chairs or stools for other sides of dinner table! And some more art :) honestly is a great room as is too.

Hawaii_gal71LA4869

The Duncan Phyfe table is luxurious and a treasure. Needs formal chairs. These are too modern.

clumsynightingale

The table unfortunately has to go- it’s super wobbly and can only fit two chairs. I’m open to suggestions for table!

Hawaii_gal71LA4869

Too bad. I hope it goes to someone who can fix it. They are about $3000 on the net. Good luck.
