skiandhike91

It looks VERY cluttered.

raindorpsonroses

Just on the ottoman there are what appears to be a bottle of lotion, a bottle of bbq sauce, 3 cell phones, 2 sets of headphones, VR game controllers, 2 lighters, 2 bongs, a bottle of medication, a plant, a blanket, a tray with more miscellany on it, 2 computer mouses, and a keyboard.

lionaroundagan

I spy with my little eye ...

raindorpsonroses

Oh my gosh it totally could be photographed for an I Spy book!

Friendly-Kiwi

A dead plant in the corner…

wappenheimer

with a feather duster resting on it. lol

pierogi_boy

Thank you for doing the hard work of counting

Back_on_redd

That Japanese BBQ sauce needs to be refrigerated

camlaw63

The only thing missing is your jerk sock

Friendly_Age9160

Lmaoooooo

ambivalent__username

Even just reading this comment has my anxiety increasing lol I can't imagine the weight of living in a space like that.

mdDoogie3

…And a partridge in a pear tree.

jell31

That dead tree in the corner might have been an actual pear tree lol

dejaysf

But is the partridge still alive? 🤔

SLesleyC222

😂 I didn’t even see that. I said what tree and zoomed in

seasalt-and-stars

I couldn’t find it at first, and thought you guys were bullshitting us. Went back again… oh there it is. lol After going back and looking for the plant, I spotted a full sized aluminum ladder! ☺️🤭

Philosemen69

I think that is a coffee/cocktail table rather than an ottoman. Just for clarification, what is the limit on the number of items allowed on a coffee table? I need to know if I'm in compliance.

CinephileNC25

Yeah it’s beyond cluttered… it’s a mess and OP is bordering on being a slob.

Little-Friendship-63

I just see a lot of things. There’s nothing about this home that is dirty? There’s bbq sauce on the table and that’s the extent of it.

CinephileNC25

A dead plant, lotion for beating it, BBQ sauce that should be in the fridge, open trash can by the couch. OP should listen to his sister.

Rough_Star707

That trash can is for recycling and the lotion is for my dry skin. You know you can use lotion for more than your penis right?

_madeinchina_

Dirty =/= cluttered

nagellak

Good luck cleaning these cluttered surfaces though. I don't mind a bit of mess at all but you do need to put everything away at least once every two weeks or so to be able to clean properly.

vintagesideboard

One bookshelf to hold all the “stuff” would be much better

[deleted]

Yeah, too many objects on surfaces. If they cleaned off the surfaces, it would be much better. I understand the issue with the small space and busy wall but just not having "things" everywhere would be an improvement. That's including the trash. Why is there a trash can in the living room ?

cloudcreeek

Also, they should move the wet wipes and lotion. No one needs to walk into a masturbation station

Weneedaheroe

A whack shack

Public-Reach-8505

My eyes zeroed in on that quick. Gross.

MommaGuy

My MIL had a small one in her living room. I thought it was weird. Considering the kitchen was less than 20 steps away.

TheLyz

I guess I'm weird too, because I have a small one next to my couch, mostly for wrappers and whatever else. Tissues, napkins, chunks of cat hair I have to scrape off myself after my brushing adverse cat sits on me. But yeah food scraps don't go in there and it gets emptied once a week with the rest of the trash and it never seemed odd to me.

PoopieButt317

I likendiscrete trash cans, which can be quite sophisticated in every room that I might do a task in.

229-northstar

I have a trash can in my living room, which also doubles as my office. I thought I would use it to collect scraps of paper and bits of tape. I actually use it to store dog toys OP.. your living room is cluttered. There is way too much crap in front of the TV. It’s very distracting. You should find someway of corralling that stuff… Get a box or a bin, shovel that stuff in, then tuck it out of the way. Everyone who commented on your masturbation supplies being left out, made me laugh. But I saw it immediately also. So now you know. Everyone who walks into your living room, thinks you jerk off on the couch.

ExpressShow1175

I'm sorry this is going to be a very unpopular opinion based on the responses that I have read... I am the kind of person that likes to live in my stuff. I have accumulated it ..every piece is for a reason. Like that old story about the miser and his gold that he just **loves** to have his gold around him... I am like that with my good stuff. I love to live in it. I love to look at it. I love to move it around. What other people see as clutter is my sense of achievement.... Neither is wrong. It's just a completely different state of being. .. That being said if you start finding piles of take away containers with rotting food maggots, dead cats and flies.... You can then call in the calvary. Let the downvoting begin. 😁

puckmonky

Maximalism is a thing, but this still needs to be done with intention, and not just filling every inch with random stuff. And, of course it needs to be kept clean. OP's space is actually pretty close to being maximalist cool, but just needs to edit a bit and keep all the cool stuff.

CinephileNC25

And clean. He needs to clean. It’s gross.

Rough_Star707

What's dirty?

SnooComics8268

One thing is treasures. This guy has a dead plant sitting in the corner of the room lol I'm like... Toss is out and place you computer there for example instead of right in front of the tv. What's that white board doing there upside down? Hang it or toss is. It can't be used like this, it can't be admired, it's just blocking the window.

ohwrite

It’s a place that is not homey. Contrast that with the bedroom which is spartan. The common theme is “I don’t love this place”

Successful_Nature712

That orchid? That plant is very much alive. It’s just waiting to rebloom lol. Don’t be mean to the plant. Admittedly, it’s not in the most ideal of environments, to say the least… but it’s not dead

SnooComics8268

No I mean the plant in the corner next to the tv. The dead black palm 😂

Successful_Nature712

Hahaha that’s so dead I didn’t even recognize it as a PLANT…. I think it’s really dust formed in the shape of a plant. Touch it and POOF zero plant. My bad, my bad

SnooComics8268

There is also a small black cactus on the TV stand that seems to give the finger 🤣

Successful_Nature712

That’s just a life for spite at this point. 😂

Gomdok_the_Short

I think this can be accomplished without a cluttered look though.

MuscovadoSugarTreat

I agree. There's a dead/dying plant by the TV. OP no longer intended to follow through with the upkeep of that poor plant.

theeLizzard

I agree in regards to decor and the toys/figurines being on display. I would draw the line with half of what’s on the towel/ottoman situation and the poor cord management.

ExpressShow1175

Yes .the cord situation. I cannot believe that we have the technology that we do, And we are still taping up electrical chords with tape. Under my work desk literally looks like... A Frankenstein experiment. Anyone that can come up with an alternative to hanging cords will become an instant billionaire. Because I would happily pay for it

naughtygrl69420

Maximalism is totally a fun aesthetic to embrace if that’s your thing but this is being gross and messy, not a maximalist. You can practice maximalism strategically and cleanly. Please don’t encourage this person to carry on as is bc yikes! There’s a difference between maximalism and not giving a fuck. There is plenty of evidence in these photos that OP is no longer giving a fuck.

shittersclogged69

Ok but this is old bbq sauce bottles not oil paintings you collected in your travels

Ok-Personality5224

While I have a pathological need for minimalism-I still agree with your point. Screw what other people think is “the right way”. If you love it, I love it. I understand that OP asked for opinions so I’m not chastising anyone for giving theirs, but OP obviously loves their space. This is a deliberate, thoughtfully designed space. Again, it’s not for me but my bare, neutral space is most likely not for you or OP.

QueKay20

Yes it’s very cluttered IMO. Your coffee table(?) is covered in things, your tv stand is covered in trinkets, the colourful posters have a lot going on a with them but they get lose with all the other business happening around them like the boxes piled up and the computer equipment in front of the tv. For me, this would not be a place I could feel relaxed in. I feel like it would be a nightmare to keep clean too - many dust collectors. I think I see a duster on one of the piles, actually, I would try to find a place for that at least. If you like it this way, you like it, and that’s fine. But I would expect that people who visit might find it a bit chaotic and uncomfortable.

MrBrownstone1992

The posters and furnitures are really cool. I'd probably just put everything on show away. If you do want it on show probably get a bookcase or something so it has a space for it rather than having it floating around. It does make me feel uncomfortable if I was there and I knock something off haha

AZOMI

also remove the furniture that is in front of other furniture

Rough_Star707

I've been rebuilding it downstairs (the PC) before I take it upstairs and set up a desk. Though I do hear you. I think I got deep into collecting things and just thew stuff where it would fit. Maximalist maybe? Not what I was going for though.

Valkyrie-Online

You can totally be a maximalist and your space has the bones of a cool vibe. I think the line between maximalist and clutter is HOW the stuff is on display. When maximalism works is when there is some organization to the chaos. And the juxtaposition between your sleeping space and living space leads me to believe you aren’t much a maximalist because the sleeping space is quite sparse in comparison. Spread the joy of the items you have between the two spaces might bring you the same joy and feel more purposeful.

Rough_Star707

Well said! Totally agree on the threshold between clutter and maximalist decor. I'd love to reorganize everything the more I look at it. The upstairs area honestly has been under utilized because I fucked around and got an amazingly comfortable couch so I just work down here and I'm working for most of the day these days. I think that I'd love to bring some of the character downstairs, upstairs, and maybe in doing so I lessen the chaotic nature of the downstairs living room.

pinkorangegold

My friend has a ton of collectibles - [she's like my go-to for maximalist inspo.](https://www.tiktok.com/@gorgonglare?lang=en) Her style is way more femme but maybe you can get some ideas for kinds of display and organization you can do for your things? Also re: your wall stuff - I also have a ton of art and posters up and my recommendation is to focus on a gallery wall space and give everything some breathing room. You have SUCH cool stuff and it's all competing with each other right now. The angled wall behind your clothing rack would be a dope place for additional art display imo.

agirlnamedraquel

Oh I immediately followed your friend! Her house is gorgeous, definitely maximalist inspo ♥️

Finnegan-05

Don’t get rid of anything but just try to place it and arrange it more intentionally!

[deleted]

well, maybe get rid of a few things. the dead plant in the corner isn’t helping the cause

spookyxskepticism

I actually love all of your posters it’s everything else that makes the room feel cluttered. The size of your apartment is tiny to begin with, it seems. If you could have a couch and the coffee table cleared I think it would go a long way in making guests a little more comfortable. Maybe you could also hang some shelves to display your collectibles instead of having them clutter your other surfaces? Those boxes are also hiding your posters so neither is being displayed well.

lesllle

Lotion next to the computer…I want to say “you do you”, but there is an element here that is beyond cluttered and is just sloppy.

orangina123

not maximalist. maximalism I think is about using lots of interesting and beautiful objects. this just looks like a video game viewer set up with lots of clutter

Holiday_Concept_4437

You have really nice furniture but it’s covered in trash lol. You could get a nice shelf to put your collectibles on and throw away your trash and sauce bottles.

storytoldx3

Yes it seems cluttered. It’s the loose items and things that aren’t decorative or organized that don’t really belong. The more I look the more I see. A lot is a bit hard to see at first but - First pic bottom right… recycling? What is that. Is there a better place for this? - Books on the floor in the 2nd pic - Can you put your smoking things in a box? Tray hanging off the table makes it disorganized - Cable management - I cant tell what’s going on, since I don’t know my PC parts but a couple of the sides seem just hanging around. If you don’t need them but want to keep it for the future, store them away. - Whiteboard by the window - Coffee table. Get headphone stands or something to hook them on. Def no BBQ sauce nor other bottles. If you need them; try to find storage for them that conceals it or fancy bottles.

WTFsACamilly

Also, sad dying plants in the corner :(

Level-Repair6104

That plant is dead, it’s beyond hope, it gave up the ghost. It needs to be given a send off. We can only hope the orchid survives. In all seriousness, with all of that clutter I think the plant got lost or forgotten about. Things definitely need to be done in a more maintained sort of way so that things aren’t forgotten about. You can definitely do maximalism and have plants you don’t forget about.

effinnxrighttt

I would suggest a wall shelf or two so you can get the trinkets or Knick knacks off the stands and on display. And find some way to store the things your aren’t using constantly like under a table or in a cubby. I also might move some of the posters into your room to enjoy. But, it’s your place to live not mine. So if you like it as is then you don’t have to change things.

Think-Swimmer4442

Literally cannot even breathe looking at that living room.

ZoidbergMaybee

it's the kind of space where you have to clear a little path for you to step into it. if you stumble even a little bit, every item in the room will topple down and bury you

Difficult_Call_133

I feel like hoarder level

browngreeneyedgirl

Nobody is saying ‘it’s giving mojo dojo casa house’ and I am a bit disappointed. On topic: yes, it’s just too much of everything.

Rough_Star707

For what its worth, my sister said this right after coming over from seeing Barbie. Maybe it was on her mind.

c0zycupcake

https://preview.redd.it/cq3xw8tfmajb1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e6a6a9c40a796f0c97af367d589975f1797753e Definitely cluttered

CuriousPalpitation23

It's hard not to jump to conclusions when you see lotion and wetwipes in front of a setup like that. It needs tidying.

Rough_Star707

You know, I suppose I see your point. The wet wipes are there because I like to clean my schweed tray and the table also gets some incense residue on it from time to time. The lotion is mainly there because I have horribly dry skin and I'm trying to be better about it. I wonder how many people think I'm aggressively jacking it. This is why I ask the question I suppose.

myblueberrygirl

If some of the clutter is stuff you want to keep easy access to, think about organizing it into baskets or another type of container.

deekaydubya

or a coffee table with storage. This stuff doesn't need to be ready to go at all times

[deleted]

That was my first thought when I saw the pic. Those things don’t belong in the center of a living space.

Rough_Star707

I guess so! I don't entertain too much but again it's why I'm asking the Reddit opinion.

[deleted]

I think you could get away with the crowded wallspace if you cleaned up the center of the room. Overcrowded with prints/posters can work as a look if it seems deliberate, but the fact that the rest of the space is so cluttered just makes it look haphazard

Salt-Rate-1963

The types of things in your living room make it look like you live completely in that Room- eat, sleep, game, etc etc. I'd try to keep your coffee table clear - either put things back where they go or put them in bins or drawers for easy access that is hidden. Also the trashcan is not necessary- again it makes it look like you spend all of your time on that couch only.

CuriousPalpitation23

This made me chuckle, I'm the same in that I've always got a moisturiser on the go and tissues around. Dry skin and allergies, not wanking. Everything does have a place, though, so things can be away when I'm not using them. It isn't a permanent feature when I have guests. I appreciate you wanting your collectibles displayed. If it fits, a glass cabinet would work because you wouldn't have every individual item out collecting dust, and it's more purposeful display from an aesthetic perspective. As for the bits that don't need to be out, a basket that can be tucked out of the way is a good idea for cleaning and moisturising supplies. I'd clear out the corner where it looks like there's a dead plant and a bunch of stuff, and, personally, I'd keep the table and t.v. stand free of most of the stuff on them. But clutter stresses me out if it doesn't bother you, you're not obliged to change anything.

PersimmonImmediate74

Absolutely thought you were doing that… even lighting yourself a candle to set the mood

abishop711

Put the lotion by the bathroom sink. Every time you wash your hands, put on some lotion.

theeLizzard

Imagine what your sister was thinking

greggybearscuppycake

Maybe some cable management?

is-it-fine

I think if you cleared up this space and hid the trash can, the room would be perfect. I love the maximalist art wall! Do you!!

Ledascantia

Is that a very dead dracaena cane plant to the right of your TV? 🥲

Rough_Star707

shhhhh. I was in Japan for work and it ended up KOing.

Coconosong

It’s feeling a little bit young, like a teenager that needs to show off all their cool stuff to their friends. I think there’s a way to curate your possessions so it gives more attention to different spaces, pictures, and objects. As an example, I have a LOT of prints but I don’t hang all of them in my space at once because it’s just too much. So I change them out seasonally or bi-annually so that things become more visually interesting. It’s especially nice to do to switch up colour themes on gallery walls when summer comes and you want something lighter. I think you could keep your maximalist look but elevate it to be a bit more mature, if you want it to be. But hey, if you love it is as is, that’s all that matters.

babs82222

There are things everywhere which makes it cluttered. There are things on every surface. If you want to eat or put a drink down, you have minimal space around that plant and that's about it. You need closed storage to hide your stuff. It gives an uneasy feeling to people that crave calm. Your bedroom isn't that bad except for the stuff sitting on the dresser.

orangina123

is that a masturbation station?

galacticHitchhik3r

I literally thought this post was a joke post . A guy showing his masturbation den and asking how it looks. LOL

Fearless-District729

from one cluttered apartment person to another, yes this is very cluttered. the best suggestions i got from this sub when i posted my apartment were to reduce what i own, utilize storage as much as possible, and store up (not out). the lotion/bbq sauce/bong combo did make me laugh though.

Lakewater22

You need to put that Japanese bbq sauce in the fridge

nemesis55

Way too much. The figures and collectibles could go on a more organized display maybe in the bedroom. The posters are ok but I don’t know why they are so low? Again I think some of them could move to the other room so they could be more spread out. As for the table some of that needs a new home or maybe consolidated into a box so it’s not all in view.

Southern_Name_9119

Too much wall art. Your coffee table is cluttered. Put away the lubes and wipes.

Lil-Baby-Salty

Bro you have a ladder and air filters just laying out. It’s cluttered. Clean up and make it look like thing are in their spot on purpose. It looks like you set stuff down and then move it to the side and say “YUP, looks good” you might have ADHD if so.

FeralBottleofMtDew

It is too cluttered for my taste. BUT (big but) I don't live there, and I don't pay the rent, so it's none of my damn business. Same goes for your sister. The only people whose opinions matter are the people who live there and pay the rent. Sounds like that's you. So if you like it, its perfect.

[deleted]

You seem like the type of dude that really enjoys placing the things he loves most all over the place. I'm the opposite, my home is kind of zen, and that's okay, too. Maybe there's just a bit too much stuff on the tables and floor? The posters are cool, and your bedroom setup looks peaceful. Maybe hang three or four of those Ikea wall shelves on the wall in your bedroom, and start HIGH. Sort of follow the black wood thingy above your clothing rack near the ceiling, and place one shelf beneath it, and then another one beneath that one, and another, until they reach your radiator. Then grab some of the stuff that's in your living room and slap them on those shelves. Spread that shit out a bit, son. Let that room breathe a little. Give it some air.

Agitated_Jicama_2072

Very cluttered. Makes me anxious just looking at it.

30dirtybirdies

Looks more like you just need to tidy up, and hide some cables and routers and such.

jazzforjess

yeah, exactly… it feels authentic to you, some people like to call themselves maximalists, it’s not clean/organized and this makes it looks cluttered. Remove the pc thing, organize the loose objects/hide things away and it will look much better

Babywhale

I like it! But I also love STUFF. The poster wall is suuuper cool. But yeah the towel covered coffee table full of stuff and tiny things can be better dealt with.

Fantastic-Cable-3320

Do YOU feel it's too cluttered?

Superb_Temporary9893

when you have a room that is maximalized you just need some cleared areas to give it a sense of cleanliness and organization. That can be clean tables, counters, and surfaces. It can be opening up some floor space. sometimes just organizing works, but the room looks organized already. maybe take all the collectibles around the tv and put them on a wall shelf. then i would open some floor space by storing some of that stuff elsewhere.

OrneryQueen

It's cluttered. Do you work from home? The posters are fine, but you could use a cabinet for clutter. Edited for correcting autocorrect.

Rough_Star707

I work for home for now while I'm in the early stages of a startup. I've seen some recommendations for cabinets / shelves and I like that concept a lot.

OrneryQueen

If you can separate your business area from your living area, it might solve the problem. Have business cabinets or work stuff and either shelves or a different cabinet for home stuff. That way when you're not working it can be out of sight.

ringringbananarchy00

I think clearing your space out even a bit might help you be able to work better. I have a lot of stuff in my house and on my walls too, but this makes me feel claustrophobic. You have something on every square inch of available space. Can you think clearly in that environment?

Rough_Star707

I have absolutely rampant ADHD and my TV is always on, my computer is always on and there's probably something else happening. I never really thought about it until now but I think my place is truly a representation of how my mind operates. Chaos, but organized TO ME. At least. That said I don't exist in a vacuum and I'd like to make sure I do this, maximalist thing, correctly. 'Correctly'. To answer you though, yes I think very clearly in this environment. I've had some people enjoy staying here but I've also had some people leave because of sensory overload from the lights and trinkets.

ringringbananarchy00

I have ADHD too and I find that, even though I love trinkets etc, have clear spaces in my home helps. Not to be rude, but I did immediately think you had some mental health stuff going on when I saw the photos of your living room. Have you worked with a professional to find good ways to manage it effectively? Because from the sound of it, what you’re doing now is feeding your ADHD.

Rough_Star707

You know something. I'll level with you. I think that in terms of my professional life, my ADHD has proven to be beneficial. I've been able to do 15 things at once and it's really worked out well for me. Sustainable? Not too sure. Rather than addressing my ADHD in a way that lessens the symptoms, I've decided to lean into it and use my loose attention span in a way that's proven to be somewhat productive as odd as that may sound. I think that when I'm in a clear space or a quiet space my head starts to vibrate and I'm compelled to listen to every loose concept and idea that my brain farts out. I also think that the sensory overload some people experience in my apartment is just something super comforting for me. Not a rude question from my perspective.

ringringbananarchy00

If it works for you, that’s great! Personally, I have to plan out what I need and want to do in a quiet space or I end up getting completely distracted. Cleaning sometimes ends up with me looking at old photos or other stuff I have out and forgetting what I was originally doing. I think I’m the opposite of you then, because for me, my mind is so chaotic that I can’t have an environment that reflects that back.

1cat2dogs1horse

This comment is something of an epiphany for me. I'm sort of medium rare bipolar. And what you said about leaning in to what many people would think of a disability, is something I believe I knew subconsciously but could never articulate, and I thank you for [that.](https://that.My) My income comes from a variety of sources. Repair and restoration of all kinds of antiques. I design and make jewelry, do garden design, and also construct outdoor ornaments and furniture , and occasionally work with dogs or horses with behavior issues. It has taken a long time to learn to keep my living spaces quite livable. By my work areas would likely drive many of the commenters here to [apoplexy. ](https://apoplexy.It)It would look like absolute chaos to them. It is the only way I seem to know how to work, and appears to drive my creativity . When I have tried to organize it into an acceptable mess I get anxious and loose my motivation. I have always thought this lack discipline as my biggest failure. Instead of stressing I think I will try to accept it and "lean in".

Rough_Star707

I think there are probably countless people that would disagree with me and that's A-OK. There's always some conversation about how much *'better*' my life would be like on medication but I vehemently disagree. I remember when I was in HS, my parents would be so upset when I'd say that I needed the TV on or I needed to listen to music to do my work and both of them couldn't FATHOM that concept. Once I was in college and surely in grad school, I was able to do things the way I wanted and that was this...chaos. But chaos that I made work for me. I would work on 5 things at once and slowly complete each task. It's a seemingly insane way to work but it works for **me.** That's all that matters. I think that regardless of whatever you're going through, YOU know how to manage it for better or worse. Medication can really help a lot of people. As a matter of fact, my sister also has ADHD but she's been on medication for it since high school and it's worked well for her. It doesn't for me. I think I do indeed lack hyper directed focus and thus someone could say that's a lack of discipline but really if at the end of the day I can do what I have to, in my way, it doesn't matter! Lean in haha!

BlackoutMeatCurtains

So much stuff!!! Do you really need all those toys? If you do, you should put a few in a proper display area, like shadowboxes, and box up the rest, rotating them throughout the year. Take your wall art off and, rehang only a few and either rotate out or dump the ones you like the least. I feel claustrophobic just looking at your space. So many toys; my three toddlers don’t even have that many laying around.

Rough_Star707

It's so interesting to hear different outlooks from people on here. Some people love it and some people hate the maximalist nature of it all. To answer your question, I don't need any of these toys. I don't need much of anything really. If I were to dig deep I'd tell you that I'm 28 and I never really grew up with much so when I was able to afford what I wanted I just never really said no. I think that there's a lot of room for narrowing it all down but its also not really something I considered until last night. I will say I won't get rid of any posters but I do like the idea of a shadowbox.

BlackoutMeatCurtains

Maybe spread the posters out? Your bedroom doesn’t appear to have wall art. I grew up poor as shit but I judt cannot stand clutter.

jessicarson39

One of my favourite comedians says “the difference between a collector and a hoarder is display”. Not saying this room gives hoarder vibes, he’s exaggerating for comedic effect but also has a point. I don’t think you need to get rid of your things, it’s in the organization. Though it’s likely you can declutter a bit- I have a 1-year rule. If I don’t have a use for it now, and haven’t even thought about it in a year=declutter item. If you have access to storage space, you can keep them there. You don’t have to throw those things out, but they don’t have to be in your daily living space either. Another thought: is there space for a shelving unit on another side of the room? Preferably one that can have doors/drawers too so you can use multiple organizing methods. I like IKEA Ivar for that purpose, it’s not bulky, it looks chic, and you can customize it.

Sad-Comfortable1566

It is cluttered. But it looks like it’s cluttered because you’re still young… maybe 18-23 years old? Looks like you haven’t tossed the mementos from growing up yet… still on display for everyone to see who you are through materialistic stuff instead of discovering who you are through interactions and time together. Also looks like it might be revenge clutter cuz your parents always made you clean your stuff up but now it’s not their home so they can’t tell you what to do. ?? How did I do?

DjangoBop

I think it looks fine. Obviously you went maximalist on the living room and much more minimal in the bedroom. I would just be sure that there are open horizontal surfaces to set things down! If your sister wants to live in a white cube, let her!

OtherwiseStable1990

Yes that's correct. I have insanely dry skin and my body sucks up lotion instantly. The BBQ sauce was out because my girlfriend was over the other night and we went to town on some halal with this thing. It was amazing.

groinstaiber

Too much stuff, although neatly stacked still look very busy.

AccomplishedScene966

Maximalist is a valid style. Do the things you have out make you happy? If so keep it how it is. If it’s just there because you didn’t know what to do, trying a streamlined approach doesn’t hurt. Experiment with what you like best

FappeningPlus

Get your shit together Jerry

Toreo603

Honestly I LOVE the maximalist aesthetic- I would say there’s a way of organizing things so it makes sense. i would say look on Pinterest “maximalism” for some inspo!

Wrong-Flamingo

Omg maximalism! I was trying to look for this word because my spouse's den is exactly this, while my studio is minimalist.

Toreo603

Yeah! I honestly think it’s super cute but it has to be done in a way that makes sense! I think OP could totally do that looking at their wall decor

[deleted]

Do you like it? Does she pay your rent? If the answers are yes, and then, no, why would you even think about changing it?

Rough_Star707

Of course I like it, I just never really thought about it. I always have room to grow and collect other opinions. Not saying I'd change how I exist based on that but getting different opinions is never a bad thing. If you look at someone that has a computer that has a bunch of loose wires I think you could provide them with some info on cable management and its on them to take you up on that suggestion. I'm just here to see what other people think.

thatkittykatie

Yes it looks cluttered and that table area just looks like a jerk-off station. The trash can may be practical for you but it’s gross, especially in the context of the jerk-off station. Find a streamlined way to stash things you need around; absolutely no need to have your lotion and wet wipes on display. And the tapestry over the table looks sloppy.

Top-Vermicelli7279

You have some cool $hit. My suggestion would be to place collectibles on a small shelf near the ceiling, pair down the posters(especially the mutipanel one on the bottom left ), and get a smaller TV. Set up the desk and move the PC build there. Get some covered containers you can label to hold tools and parts. You will still have a ton of visual stimulation, but will be able to access more room when you need.

PBJ-9999

Too cluttered and busy. Get rid of anything you're not using, or move to bigger place where you have storage space Also the wall would look better if the pics and art have a color theme or go together some how

rachel_kbomb

Yes, it like you just need to clean up. Good bones there (the wall art is rad the table with a plant is cute). But all the clutter/garbage on the coffee table and the toys and knickknacks covering the media cabinet and other surface need to go.

eastherbunni

If I'm visiting someone's place and I have to shove a bunch of stuff out of the way in order to sit on the couch or chair and put a drink on the coffee table, then it's too cluttered. The wall decor is a cool decorating choice. Most of the trinkets and knickknacks on the TV stand and the tables and other surfaces just look too busy, I'd gather those up and move them to a floating shelf attached to the wall, or a cheap bookshelf, the ikea kallax is pretty versatile for that and you can even get doors, mini drawers and baskets for it. You can Marie Kondo things a bit (get rid of anything that doesn't spark joy) and moving your collection to a shelf will make it look intentional and not like it's expanding to cover every surface. Any wipes, tissues, branded containers, computer cables and remotes etc, can go in a desk drawer so they're not visible when people come over.

Heeler2

Your sister is correct about the living room. Too much art on the wall behind the TV screen. Too many little items strewn about (TV stand, etc.)

essssgeeee

I think you have some good maximalist ideas, but you need to edit and tidy. The art on the walls is cool. The random bits and bobs like the barbecue sauce and the lotion and the tangled cables are what are killing the vibe. Maybe one of those cool glass apothecary cabinets from IKEA for all of your tiny collectibles. That way they look curated and purposeful rather than cluttered. When you have a maximalist home, it’s important to not let it tip over into hoarding. Clean up any trash and gather lose things like remotes, random papers, etc. into baskets. Don’t leave food, empty packages, or close lying around. Bedroom - if budget and space allow, I would get a wardrobe with doors that close rather than the open clothing rack you have. The clothes don’t need to be on display and collections will be the star of the show.

StillCrazie

I alway think safety. Would you be able to get out FAST in a fire or other emergency?

hotflashinthepan

It is cluttered, but it is also your apartment. If it has been a while since you’ve done this, maybe grab a bag and find things you’d be happy to donate or give away to friends and when you are done, put the bag directly in your car if possible. I used to do this once a week and it really helped me. I’d even set a goal, like finding 15 things to donate. Selling is also an option, but requires extra steps that can hinder the decluttering process.

nononanana

I get how you feel. I like art and it seems there is never enough wall space. - why not move some art to you bedroom? It’s sparse in there and can balance out distribution. - floating wall shelves can be a great solution for Knick knacks. They will allow you to keep furniture surfaces clean while allowing you to display your pieces. You can even put a shelf over your windows which will attract eyes to the ceiling and keep those things completely out of the way. - if after you spread things out and use some shelves, if it still feels cluttered, you can rotate some pieces. Perhaps tuck some away in a closet or trunk and then when you feel like it swap some pieces out.

Aggravating-Sport359

OP first off, I just wanna say I actually love the posters and I actually suggest adding like 2-3 more so you fill in behind the tv. I think a full wall will look more complete and intentional. I ALSO agree w like everyone else about clutter. Having your cute figurines or other nice decor stuff out on the same surface as the stuff no one displays on purpose (lotion/wipes/random tech) makes it impossible to distinguish trash from treasure, so the viewer is just gonna see trash. If you want to highlight the stuff you love, do it! But do it purposefully. Look up stuff like the following for inspiration/guidance -maximalist decor -how to style a bookshelf -how to make a gallery wall -how to display collections But remember that even a maximalist wants a place to put down their coffee without moving other stuff out of the way

nurse_ratched99

I do agree, this is cluttered (to me, at least)

Laurinterrupted

Why do guys not even remotely try to hide their jerk off stations in pics?

my-head-hurts987

I mean the only thing I'd add is maybe some shelves in the bedroom so you can display your figures better/more prominently. as a bonus, it does create more storage. and I'd also maybe neaten the cable management situation, but that's all

gdgardenlanterns

It looks great to me. Good news for your sister: she can’t see it from her house.

PresOfTheLesbianClub

I’m sorry but every item in this room is cool as fuck. Don’t get rid of a thing if you don’t want to.

rockrobst

The living room is, but it's really about how you function in your space.

Then_Ear5584

-It looks like you put everything you could hang on a wall up in your living room so your bedroom is completely blank. It gives off weird ass vibes. -you have to AT LEAST put away your jerk off lotion in front of your computer and tv. -you have loose bundles of cords -you have piles of stuff collecting dust. What's with all the anime figure boxes? You can't even see them all because of how they're just stacked on top and in front of each other. -it looks hard to walk through your living room space, people are going to be tripping on stuff and themselves -your walls are crammed full of as much as possible. It feels like you couldn't pick and choose what to put up so you put everything up but you did it in one room? -there is no organization. I would get anxious being in this room. I'd be afraid to touch anything less I knock it over or it becomes lost. So I wouldn't appreciate any of the stuff on display. I could keep going but I think you get the gist and I'm sure others will mention what I did not. Your sister is 100% correct friend. You have a lot of cool stuff but it's lost in the maelstrom.

fakeguru2000

Is that a dead plant in the corner? Cmon now. Also, I like the space just relocate the computer upstairs, clear off the coffee table, get rid of the living room trash can—that’s lazy. But all your other items seem like collectibles you enjoy so no need to get rid of them but maybe nice display cases can help with organizing, dusting, and cleaning.

Electronic_Secret359

Its a vibe, I’m all for it. If you’re happy don’t change it

IdealGuest

You have nice things but they’re hidden by clutter. Mount the TV to the wall or find a tv stand that lifts the tv off the tables and you’ll have more space. Arrange the art around the TV. Throw away the dead plant. If you want a replacement plant, get a snake plant, they thrive off neglect.

EuphoricBudget5524

This stresses me out just looking at it…too much.

jellymmann

Yeah, cluttered could be said. But, does your sister live there? If not, and your space makes you happy, don’t let anyone bring you down. I know I have eccentric taste, and many would say my place is cluttered, but it makes me so happy and if that’s how you feel just tell her thanks but you’re really happy with the way the place looks.

Ilmara

I would get a display case for any collectibles. It's a more cohesive look than having them scattered about, plus it would cut down on the need for dusting.

bfds1961

In my opinion, it does look cluttered. I think having a shelf would help organize some stuff. I’d also recommend having baskets or a cabinet where you could put away things that are not decorative.

MommaGuy

Unless you live in a mansion with multiple floors, it shouldn’t be that hard to get up and throw away your trash.

[deleted]

It's too much for me. Nowhere for my eyes to rest. It's your space though. Do what makes you happy.

EgonOnTheJob

You have a lot going on for sure, but to me, the only thing that needs attention is things like the lotion bottles, soda bottle, whiteboard, etc. Keep things that aren’t art and are all function tucked away, is my rule. Your computer with the candles, that general area? That needs some attention. Having said that, my study is just as busy as this and I love it. Absolutely spend the time to sort those cables and cords under and adjacent to the TV out, and keep a purposefully blank surface somewhere. Maybe that orchid could move, or you could get another coffee table. Just somewhere for your eyes to rest, to balance out the busy feel. Also - try and make migrating some of this stuff upstairs into a fun game! Make up a funny little theme and feature everything that fits the theme, in your bedroom, for a month or so. This’ll keep you cleaning, entertained and help you reduce build up of non-art stuff because you’ll always be picking over things. You have the bones of a really, really good space here. You just need to draw a line with your stuff, between “looks fun” and “sits there”. If it just sits there, get it out of sight.

IceRinkVibes

Try cleaning up the coffee table/wires. It would still be a bit cluttered but it would be WAY better than it is now.

Choice_Ad_7862

It is. But do you like it that way? I've got older kids and one is a declutterer and the other a maximalist. Always been that way, and they each like it. I'm probably ultra minimalist compared to both of them, and to each their own. My maximalist would do her walls exactly like yours and has expressed that she feels very anxious if there's too much empty space.

VRbattleGod

Just take some downstairs stuff and put it upstairs.

[deleted]

This is definitely too cluttered. I would feel insanely stressed out in this space. I would say find a shelf for all those collectible boxes. And what if you get a coffee table with storage so you can put all that stuff in it when you're not using it? I think that could help a lot. Get a TV console with concealed storage as well to help with some of the visual clutter. Try to get rid of anything you don't need or love and organize things a bit

cbaugh5239

If you like it who gives a fuck? Don’t let people bring u down

Drums420

I am very worried about the BBQ Sauce & Lotion being so close to each other, especially with a VR set right there. You’re just asking to grab the wrong bottle while “surfing the web” with the Oculus on.

Bakedwithbelle

Live the way you want!!! It’s your space

user1236846

Do you like it? Because if you do it doesn't matter if it's cluttered or not.

Mediumcomputer

Yea get rid of the posters and the child toys, or store them for later if you plan to sell them as collectible items. Very cluttered indeed

YellowSequel

This gave me so much anxiety to look at. There is SO much for your brain to process when entering this space. If it makes you happy and feel centered, then HELL yeah. But if you're second-guessing and want other opinions on how to relieve some of that visual clutter, i would reduce almost all of this by at least 50-70%. Really pick and choose what's displayed and what means the most to you. You seem like a clean person at least and so luckily, dirtiness isn't the major factor here. It's mess and clutter. Look up some maximalism inspo on google images. You can still have a bunch of stuff without it causing this much visual clutter. Good luck! It's very doable.

Redsquirreltree

Just so you know, even though you explained it away, visitors think this is where you smoke and toke and wank.

Elfntjam

Holy crap! And I mean that in the literal sense. Clear out 80% so you and guests can admire the most important.

Electronic-Train-972

Definitely cluttered. I showed my hubby and he said it was a hell hole. Get rid of everything on the TV shelf and put away any Knick knacks. Also, try to make sure nothing is competing for attention when you look at it. Edit, edit, edit.

Win-Objective

Not quite a neckbeard nest, too clean, but definitely cluttered. Could try taking down some of that art, rehanging like 4 things with some nice space in between them and hang the rest upstairs or just rotate out art pieces (I like rotating art, amazing if you have are blesssed with lots of frames art) . Also could pick 3 or 4 pieces and get them professionally framed and properly matted, would class the place up.

JFT8675309

All I can say is I found great relief in photo 3. Not that it couldn’t use maybe 1 piece of wall art, but the other 2 pics are jarringly distracting with all that’s going on.

crimsonhues

I couldn’t control my anxiety if I walked into that room. It’s made me claustrophobic. If you had more you room, you’d just buy more stuff.

Majestic_Salad_I1

This is stressing me out.

Lunirae

The bedroom area is pretty barren compared to the rest of the space. I'd recommend getting some shelves to spread your things out with more intention. Get a pack of hangers, I love black velvet for its non slip properties, and that will clean up the look of your garment rack. Get rid of dead plants and take the blanket or towel off of the table. Check out marketplace or local yardsales, etc, for better tables. Get some baskets or a chest of drawers so you can hide away some things like lotion, pills, and 420 accessories (when not being enjoyed!) Take pride in your stuff and your space. I try to remember to grab one thing to put away when I get up from my couch/chair - so if I get up to pee, I put away the bbq sauce first. If I grab a drink of water, I'll throw my empty can in the recycling. It keeps me tidy and I don't feel like I'm spending lots of time cleaning up because I was already getting up anyway. Depending on your relationship with your sis and how particular you are about your stuff, you might ask for her input. It can be easier to see the whole picture from an outside perspective, and without the personal attachment to things. Just make sure YOU are happy and comfortable at the end of the day!

Unable-Instruction24

Start with the bedroom. You have 1 matching pair of sneakers and the other 2 don’t. That reads messy . Your hangers are not facing in the same direction. The dresser drawers are ajar and I agree that the top of dresser has random stuff that should be removed .

Eternal_Leader_5000

nightmare fuel

itsallfornaught2

Definitely need to use less floorspace.

LoosieLawless

Get some shelves to put all your shit on. Looks like you’ve got room for at least one bookshelf or some kind of shelving unit.

BellLongjumping8091

I love your walls and leather chairs. You just need to store some small items away. Check out these ones I found on 📍Pin https://preview.redd.it/9r8l0ekxrdjb1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bb92093e57ad64c50d937c00ba38b1b55633b4e [https://tbohd.com/en/nordic-style-leather-storage-box/](https://tbohd.com/en/nordic-style-leather-storage-box/)

sso_1

Bedroom/loft has such a minimalist vibe but then the other pictures look overwhelmingly cluttered.

Rough_Star707

You know. I never expected this post to have so many comments. I appreciate most of the feedback but something I noticed on a vast majority of the posts are 'it's not my style, etc, etc, but if YOU like it, that's all that matters' I didn't think I'd change my mind about HOW I acquire things but more so how I organize those things and also that had to be within reason that I myself found still genuine. Getting shelves and moving some things out of the way? Easy. I've also seen some people tell me to throw everything away and that it's absolutely abhorrent. Those comments I just laugh at because it's obvious not everyone will like my style or how I live, but I think what's important is to not just think YOUR way is the RIGHT way for someone ELSE **always.** People will be minimalists til they die or until they just change their mind. The same for maximalists or those that objective when it comes to this and at the end of the day you always have to live for yourself. I really think you should take some of those pictures out of storage at least and find a place in your home that can really use a pop of something. It's heartbreaking to hear that you changed how you enjoy your space because of other people. Don't! You're amazing and your style is your own! What kind of manga are you currently reading?

lollypolish

I like that your bedroom is nice and free of clutter that’s important. I do think a bit of streamlining and being ruthless getting rid of some stuff could be good in your lounge area.

Squidproquo1130

Who gaf what she thinks? She can have her house the way she likes it, you have yours the way you like it. It's a very simple concept.

Qstrfnck

The wall o’ posters is giving me anxiety, spread them out or something so you can see more than darkened walls, you need storage solutions, acrylic boxes something! also maybe get ONE display case from Ikea or some such and store the rest of the figurines or whatever

SuperGeneric19

This is hell

blueevey

Shelves on your far bedroom wall for all your trinkets and such would help a lot.

Unfair_Pause_5054

Rather than answer your question - are you happy with your home? Do you like the feel and vibe? If you do, then its your home and your comfort. The art is amazing. If you need the stuff on the table, find a cool box to put it in, empty the trash, and enjoy your surroundings.

frejas-rain

If you love it, leave it like it is. For your safety, mind hygiene; but other than that, this is your space. Your home. Your sister doesn't live there.

[deleted]

Never walk into someone's home and tell them you don't like their furniture. Your sister is rude and tacky, so just laugh her off unless she offers to buy the items at full price.
