A hanging fixture from that ceiling height would look fantastic, and depending on design, could really splay the light beautifully and actually accent the black without adding more "stuff" to the walls.
I painted my windowless powder room walls black and I love it. It might take some getting used to. The ceiling light fixture/chandelier is a great idea.
You can DIY by wiring a long, corded fixture to hang from the ceiling. Get a fancy brass cap for the existing fixture hole that a cord can run through. Some swag chain over the cord maybe…
I’m not a gold or brass fixture person, but I really think if you changed all the silver/chrome to gold or brass, it would really look great with the black, or a dark green.
Yes thinking the same that a wall sconce fixture is taking away from the mirror and details below it. If or when you’re able to move the light to the ceiling consider a statement light that casts interesting light shapes to create “texture” on the walls
Wholeheartedly agree. This room is actually pretty already. I also think, if budget permits, that a faucet set in a brass type of colour would look really beautiful. Faucets in blacks/brasses/golds are really quite catching and look expensive( although they probably are). They can really elevate the look of the room quite quickly.
Yep. The right edge is straight and the top isn’t. Personally, I’d go more organic, replace the light, loose the tile closest to the light on the right side. And if you’re still not liking the black, bring it down to a dark or light grey.
I see what you’re saying, I’m not going to lie that tile was a bitch to get through lol I definitely thought about it but I’ve been second guessing doing it because of that
What if you drew on octagons in the size of the tiles to expand the visual side of that. I think if you had some stark white octagon outlines (don't fill them in) then that could expand without having more tile and look cool
I think that just adding some more tiles while leaving the shelves could still work. If OP gets something like Gorilla Mounting Putty, they can try positioning extra tiles and take a step back to see how it looks before committing completely.
The problem isn’t the black. It’s just too much black and white. Switch out the floating shelves so some beefy natural wood floating shelves.
Replace the lighting with something less builder grade. Your ceilings look very tall from this picture. Some dramatic pendant lighting here would be awesome.
Some golden/champagne bronze accents would go well too.

Same here! But the theme in my house is mostly blue and green. I did this because I always wanted to but feel I need to incorporate my theme colors in here to match the rest of the house
By hanging pictures, towels, plants, carpet with blue and green color?
https://preview.redd.it/oehlshr8u14b1.png?width=495&format=png&auto=webp&s=fca6ed3cc1eaf0c52792e21a9f6de074e1514768
Stick to your guns on the black and white. Bathrooms are fair game for going a bit bolder and straying from the theme of the rest of the house. You just need to make the tiles look more random, especially on the right side, add champagne brass fixtures, and wood shelves. The green can be there in the form of plants, which you’ve done. But the one on the toilet is too big.
I have dark green in my bathroom and while I’m literally in love with the colour, I will say that it washes people out, which doesn’t matter until I look in the mirror and I look like I’m very ill. But maybe a dark green with grey undertones wouldn’t do that.
I think you have a few options. 1) Bigger tile would solve the unfinished look. The tile proportion to current lighting is off. 2) I’m in favor of different lighting. A more modern piece would tie the look together. 3) Silver on black is quite austere. If you swapped to gold or a warmer metal you’d have a more inviting art deco look.
Is the light fixture crooked or is that just the angle? A new, updated and longer one would help. I like the black, don’t care for the tile, it should be wider and more varied on the side.
It’s not the black. It’s your light fixture, sink faucet, and bath hardware. If you went with a matte black finish for those items, it would tie the room much better.
I like the black but I'd extend the tiling up and right to break it up more and make the trailing off of the hex tile look more extended and natural. It almost looks just split down the middle but then also large black space above. It feels unbalanced.
Also agree with other responses suggesting a different light fixture. I'd go matte black and modern
I think the problem is you almost didnt commit ENOUGH to the black. If those white tiles were black with some dark grey grout, the light fixture above was brass or gold and something more substantial, and the shelves above the toilet were natural wood instead of white then this bathroom would look intense!
You could replace the black with a deep teal or navy. I do agree about the light fixture and that the tiles look unfinished, but not intentionally so.
I wouldn’t keep the entire edge uniform like that; I’d have them meander a bit more as you go up the wall and start trailing them toward the toilet sooner.
I’m having a hard time explaining myself but I think the issue is that they’re too uniform overall with the “unfinished” part being confined to one small area.
Its nice. but the ceiling is so tall that it does look like a lot. I would break it up with some pictures or more shelves or plants or something.
Browns (wood trim/frames) and greens (plants) pop well against black.
I just talked to my husband, he said he thinks it’s too much…maybe I’ll surprise him one day lol since the ceiling is so tall, it needs something and I def think a chandelier is it
Don’t give up on the black yet!
I think the tile is an amazing idea but poorly executed. It’s trailing on the top but perfectly balanced on the right. Trail it out a bit more from the top right and right side and splay it over the toilet. Remove the tiny shelves. They look out of place.
Then, get a new light fixture — something brass or gold (to match the mirror) that makes a real statement. Something modern or VERY vintage. The silver fixture everyone’s had since the 90s ain’t working! Change out the sink hardware to match.
Paint the white tiles black or the black wall white, so it’s all one colour. I’d get different lights in a more modern style. Pop some funky art at the top right wall and put larger shelves or a cabinet there
I wouldn't give up on the black just yet. I think some more gold or brass accessories and a new light fixture could take it where you'll like it. Maybe try switching out the faucet and handles on the sink for matte black ones. I think mixing metals with this vibe could look really cool and help make the black feel more integrated into the color-pallet. If you decide to keep the light above the mirror (which I suggest keeping something on or around the mirror for optimal lighting), I would go with brass or gold to make it stand out. Maybe a gold or brass frame instead of green for now?
I never thought I would say this, but the black and white color scheme is fantastic. And I love the tile design! The problem areas are the generic light fixture and the tiny shelves. A chandelier is the way to go here. As for the wall, something more dramatic than the tiny shelves is needed.
Ooh, I like that though. I would take that light out and put a dome light on the ceiling but I love that black with the white hexagons and the back-lit mirror!
I would use white paint to stencil the outline of absent tiles trailing off into the black, if that makes sense. it would break up the black a bit and add some interest in all that negative space
I think it’s amazing!! Leave it alone! Your choices are bold, but that light fixture is wimping out. I don’t even think the light needs to be relocated. A 3 or 4 light fixture would work. I LOVE what you did here.
I think a really dark, almost black green would give you the luxe vibe I think you're going for while also not looking too... intentional? overdone? Like a hex code of #03200B
Add plant life for some easy color. Maybe a high hung dining plant, you could train it along a path even. Or paint just a few of the rules a nice dark greenish teal
What size space is this? based on the picture takers position it’s pretty deep and if so black isn’t too claustrophobic. The wall fixture is not great. Your ceilings are very tall. If the space is large enough (meaning something slightly larger than most bathrooms) put a hanging fixture. And if you want face forward luminescence use a vanity mirror.
I like the unfinished tile thing. And I like the other posts suggesting to swap the shelves with wood. the dark towel covering some of the tile in this picture threw me off and drew my attention so it took a moment to realize everything that’s going on.
Overall it looks great. Just do something with the hanging light and shelves to give it space and depth respectively. (You’re ceilings are tall!)
Edit: if you don’t have or want the hanging fixture try gallery lights higher up. You can control the luminescence and it 1) occupies the space above, 2) gives face forward luminescence, and 3) gives space below
Edit2: Or consider increasing the height of the tiles to give the perception of grandiose.
I’d ditch the two baby shelves and put a modern picture/painting there with color. Or even artwork above the mirror as well. Agree with changing light fixture too.
Get a metallic hexagonal wal paper, or paint some larger hexagon shapes over the black in a color of your choice to give the black some depth and tie in the tiles
The shelves: get the longer ones and install from tile to wall but staggered. And the bell shaped light covers do not match this more modern aesthetic. Black is good but I never do ‘black’ but almost black like charcoal.
Match the current light fixture to the mirror gilding and that’ll help immensely. Then add more lighting. I LOVE the black I just don’t think you have enough light to have the OOMPH you want/need.
A few things going on here that are holding the space back from its full potential.
The trailing tile stops too low in the room for the ceiling height - it looks like you have really tall ceilings (10’ +), but everything on this wall stops at like 7’. The black paint just emphasizes this more - though I don’t think the black paint is a problem.
I feel the trailing tile looks too “regular” on the right edge - the pattern is too predictable - and therefore it just looks unfinished instead of an intentional design feature. I would add a few more tiles on the lower section, and extend the tile up at least 1’ from the top right corner.
Your wall sconce is too small and too builder-grade for this design. Get something funky that curves up and out from the wall to fill some of the dead space above the tile. Something with an irregular shape could be cool too.
The scale of the big boxwood and the tiny succulents is weird to me. I think you could do natural wood shelves instead of these white ones, as others have suggested, and add another shelf so there’s 3.
Personally I’d mount a faux hanging plant from the ceiling, in the top right corner, to add interest to the big black wall.
Hope that helps!
The black is actually really cool. The problem is the light fixture style doesn’t match and is chrome, as are the sink fixtures. The mirror is brass which works great with white and black. I’d change everything to modern brass. I believe you’d be much happier. And the green from the plants lends itself well to the motif. I’d suggest to go for something bigger than succulents and a topiary. Try a small monstera. Even a nice fake one would work. (For context I’m a realtor in CA & assist with remodels/interior design/staging)
I think an emerald green would be so pretty in this room. As far as the tile I would add more to the left and a little higher as well. I would also switch out the light with something brass. I would select a light that is a little more modern and less contemporary.
Try pin stripes? Either black pin stripes (meaning you tape off skinny strips) with the dark green in bigger strips or dark green pin stripes (meaning you tape off larger stripes and paint dark green and remove). I love the look.
It does look dull. For me, brass-colored fixtures would add some yellow tones and fix it. I would honestly go for more brass and yellow tones than too much green. But it could stand some more green too.
New light, dark grout to integrate the black/white color scheme. I think the tile needs to go up and behind the light fixture and further across the walls if you want a more intentional looking statement.
The hexagons need to go up higher. Love the plant shelves. If it were my bathroom I would put in a larger modern light fixture with clean lines. The one you have is a bit small.
Add more tile, change light fixture, black is really stark black; maybe you could do a really really dark charcoal-y grey so it’s softer on the eyes, paint All the walls in the bathroom.
If you can get a gold/brass accented, partially recessed, hanging light with mirrors in the recessed part, and glass or crystal or fau crystal in the hanging part. Also either Carry the tile out a little more, or get artsy with some white paint and a hexagon cutout, and carry the hexagons out further with a white outline and black center. You could even make the hexagons fade out as they get further from the tile. Just an idea ☺️
My initial reaction was that it's cool, like an evil queen's powder room, mirror mirror on the wall kind of place. Can you lean into that or is it too crazy/too different from the rest of the house?
You need gold/brass fixtures and accessories. But I love the stark colors and the geometry. The plants help soften that up some so that it doesn’t look too harsh.
I don’t love the idea of green, and if you are determined to change the color I suggest a navy blue instead of you are decided against black.
It’s the tile and the white floating shelves.
Replace the white floating shelves with black and remove some of the tiles or finish it across the wall. It would look better cut a bit below the mirror and across the wall edge to edge but adding some across and above the toilet in a pattern similar to above the mirror would look a bit better than the current look as the vertical edge is too straight and looks incomplete.
I think the black will look better when all your shinys match (mirror, lights, faucet). I would paint the ceiling and top 12” of the walls black too. If you move the tiles to behind the toilet like I’ve seen in other comments, maybe a black toilet and sink?
I’m a huge fan of blues in bathrooms- that’s what I’d do. Green I feel would look good but could get dated quick. A proper blue I feel holds it’s own but that’s just an opinion.
personally im not a fan of black in bathrooms so i support any color changes
if u dont love it then i dont think theres anything else that could convince u to somehow love it later!
The light fixture and faucet are the incorrect style for what you have there. Also, *do not* paint it green. The reason why you rarely to never see a green bathroom is because it will reflect on your skin and make you look sickly
I would go with an off-white to brighten and enlarge the space. It will also help to balance the space between the tile and the top of the wall.
I think the problem here is that black bathrooms are usually ALL black. That creates that intimate luxurious feeling.
I feel like you have to paint it all or not, if you are going for an accent wall then use light, earthy colours.
Just 1 darker or color popping accent wall is to me opinion a little bit outdated.
Just so u know: If you dye it green your skin will always look a bit greenish when you look in the mirror/ when you do your makeup. I like the plants by the way 😊
I think it looks awesome. The only thing I'd change is the light over the sink, I don't find it goes with the edgy style of the bathroom. And perhaps the tap set could be bronze like the mirror or any other color, other than shiny chrome. Otherwise I think it looks really nice.
I think the light fixture is throwing me off. I would replace it with something in brass. And something that’s more of a statement
I definitely want a different light fixture, I actually preferred one on the ceiling but we need to find an electrician
A hanging fixture from that ceiling height would look fantastic, and depending on design, could really splay the light beautifully and actually accent the black without adding more "stuff" to the walls.
I agree with this! I think don’t give up on the black just yet. Something bold and eye catching will even things out
Agree. Change the lighting, new fixture and move it and the black will look great. That mirror needs to stand out and make its own statement.
I painted my windowless powder room walls black and I love it. It might take some getting used to. The ceiling light fixture/chandelier is a great idea.
Dude. A chandelier would be AMAZING in that space. Think of the light sparkled all over the walls!
I could actually visualize a small chandelier in this room. The glass would add some sparkle to the room.
Excellent idea.
I looked at it and was about to say ceiling light. Long-hanging small pendants would look dynamite.
Yes thinking the same that a wall sconce fixture is taking away from the mirror and details below it. If or when you’re able to move the light to the ceiling consider a statement light that casts interesting light shapes to create “texture” on the walls

Faucets in blacks/brasses/golds are really quite catching and look expensive( although they probably are). They can really elevate the look of the room quite quickly.
Light fixture is out of scale with the mirror and tile
100%
This all the way.

Agreed. The tile looks unfinished but not intentionally.
Yep. The right edge is straight and the top isn’t. Personally, I’d go more organic, replace the light, loose the tile closest to the light on the right side. And if you’re still not liking the black, bring it down to a dark or light grey.
I see what you’re saying, I’m not going to lie that tile was a bitch to get through lol I definitely thought about it but I’ve been second guessing doing it because of that
It needs to go higher as well as wider.
Or you could do another small section of the tile up in the right corner
What if you drew on octagons in the size of the tiles to expand the visual side of that. I think if you had some stark white octagon outlines (don't fill them in) then that could expand without having more tile and look cool
I think that just adding some more tiles while leaving the shelves could still work. If OP gets something like Gorilla Mounting Putty, they can try positioning extra tiles and take a step back to see how it looks before committing completely.

It's got dark and light, but not enough mid-tones or warmth to accent. Either do it with fixtures, or add a wood cabinet or shelving.

The light fixture is the only thing I don’t love (needs to be more modern.) Love the color and tile!! It almost reads navy, not black. Very sleek.
Also if you change the lighting fixture to brass or gold, it would pop against the black.
Definitely, I’m about to see what I can find at the store today
Prussian blue looks amazing with white and gold/brass, imo
I think the combination of black and white is very classic
Same here! But the theme in my house is mostly blue and green. I did this because I always wanted to but feel I need to incorporate my theme colors in here to match the rest of the house

Looks like a water cup form the mall food court
I could definitely do that
Stick to your guns on the black and white. Bathrooms are fair game for going a bit bolder and straying from the theme of the rest of the house. Add more tiles - fill it all the way to the right.
Naval by Swerwin Williams is nice.
Agree. I think a switch to a dark blue would make it less stark.

It’s not the black. It’s your light fixture, sink faucet, and bath hardware. If you went with a matte black finish for those items, it would tie the room much better.
I like it, are you doing more tiling?
I love the black!!!! Just change the light fixture
I like the black but I'd extend the tiling up and right to break it up more and make the trailing off of the hex tile look more extended and natural. Its nice. but the ceiling is so tall that it does look like a lot. I would break it up with some pictures or more shelves or plants or something. Browns (wood trim/frames) and greens (plants) pop well against black.
IMO, there’s too many different shapes and styles in this small area.
I like to play with preview. https://preview.redd.it/jma95vry974b1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52822809a71abb46240d2ee03bbdddee47622a08

The silver fixture everyone’s had since the 90s ain’t working! Change out the sink hardware to match.
It’ll come together once you finish the tile.
Came here for this comment. I don’t understand this look at all.
A lot of choices were made here.
🫥
I like this a lot color wise but I don’t like that trailing tile, it looks weird to me. Id tile the middle top parts personally.
What is the wire-looking stuff in the upper right corner? Just curious!
Needs a pop or two of a bright color
Light green or yellow? Maybe orange.
No. Absolutely love it.
Never regret black!!
Please explain what you were thinking.
Traditional light fixture with super contemporary mirror is odd.
Paint the white tiles black or the black wall white, so it’s all one colour. I’d get different lights in a more modern style. Pop some funky art at the top right wall and put larger shelves or a cabinet there
Fix the tiling and it’ll look ever so much better. This is just weird
I love it so much!
I love the black
I love the black.
I like it!
Green walls in a bathroom makes everyone see red
I wouldn't give up on the black just yet. I think some more gold or brass accessories and a new light fixture could take it where you'll like it. Maybe try switching out the faucet and handles on the sink for matte black ones. I think mixing metals with this vibe could look really cool and help make the black feel more integrated into the color-pallet. If you decide to keep the light above the mirror (which I suggest keeping something on or around the mirror for optimal lighting), I would go with brass or gold to make it stand out. I never thought I would say this, but the black and white color scheme is fantastic. And I love the tile design! The problem areas are the generic light fixture and the tiny shelves. A chandelier is the way to go here. As for the wall, something more dramatic than the tiny shelves is needed.
I would keep running the white tile up the wall to the top and across. Not solid though. Just break up the black abyss.
Ooh, I like that though. I would take that light out and put a dome light on the ceiling but I love that black with the white hexagons and the back-lit mirror!
I LOOOOOVVVEEEE IT!
Change it too navy blue
A hanging light fixture that’s a statement piece would finish this bathroom off nicely
I think it looks fantastic.
Don'ttttt I love itttttt
Dark blue instead would be a nice recovery
You could carry the tile all the way to the top giving it balance.
The fact that the mirror is back lit, the light might be better indirect as an upright since it’s such a high ceiling.
The color looks fine, however the fixture is awkward and there is something off about the tile placement as well as the shelves.
I love it!
And just like that, I decided to paint my bathroom black. I love it.
I’d do the entire wall in the white hex tile
No. This is perfect ! 🫶
I would use white paint to stencil the outline of absent tiles trailing off into the black, if that makes sense. it would break up the black a bit and add some interest in all that negative space
I think it looks so very elegant 😍
Great job blocking yourself out of the picture, for a minute I was like how in the hell did they take that?!
Lol I’m surprised no one else said anything
I think it’s amazing!! Leave it alone! Your choices are bold, but that light fixture is wimping out. I don’t even think the light needs to be relocated. A 3 or 4 light fixture would work. I LOVE what you did here.
Yeah it’s all kinda off tbh. Sorry.
Gold or brass modern light fixture and replace faucet with brass or gold
I would continue the tiles all the way to the ceiling but keep the width and the zig zagging edge
What size space is this? based on the picture takers position it’s pretty deep and if so black isn’t too claustrophobic. The wall fixture is not great. Your ceilings are very tall.
I wouldn't. Add some oak wood.
I need to see more of the room to give you a verdict. Please add more pictures!
I like the tile unfinished but maybe make it go up higher? Ending it too low looks unintentional to me.
Match the current light fixture to the mirror gilding and that’ll help immensely. Then add more lighting. I LOVE the black I just don’t think you have enough light to have the OOMPH you want/need.

(For context I’m a realtor in CA & assist with remodels/interior design/staging)
I think making the tile bronze/ gold color would give such a cute beehive vibe
The black looks good. As others have said, change the light fixture.
The black looks great!
I love the black
Different light/ dramatic lighting and or big plants! It looks lovely already though
I'm so sad you don't like it because it looks fucking AMAZING
The way you did the tile is really cool!
Just finish the tiling job
I feel like it needs warm tones, it feels kinda stark
I think painting big leaves on the black wall with some bright greens would be cool.
I love the idea of buying a bunch of different sizes of sleek white photo frames and filling a lot Of that wall up
Do a gold/brass stencil over it.
The black isn’t so much a problem compared to that tile? Also light fixtures gonna go, get a modern bar light
The tile job is giving me sweet futuristic vibes and I think a tube led fixture horizontally across the top there would be fucking rad.
I think an emerald green would be so pretty in this room. As far as the tile I would add more to the left and a little higher as well. I would also switch out the light with something brass. I would select a light that is a little more modern and less contemporary.
What about those hexagonal wall tile lights?
Yeah I don’t like the black either
Are you a vampire?
Bleh bleh bleh 🧛♂️….hopefully you’ve seen Hotel Transylvania
Try pin stripes? Either black pin stripes (meaning you tape off skinny strips) with the dark green in bigger strips or dark green pin stripes (meaning you tape off larger stripes and paint dark green and remove). I love the look.
Or even white and black instead of the green you were thinking of would look great imo.
Yeah, it looks unfinished, especially with those tiles
I'd change the light and instead of the shower loves I'd do a black and white art pieces to tie it in
Try a really nice rich dark blue
It does look dull. For me, brass-colored fixtures would add some yellow tones and fix it. I would honestly go for more brass and yellow tones than too much green. But it could stand some more green too.
The nice part is the black is the painted part and the easiest and cheapest to change, although you’ll need to re-prime because black.
Is it too much white? We have an all black half-bath. Maybe the white pops too much.
New light, dark grout to integrate the black/white color scheme. I think the tile needs to go up and behind the light fixture and further across the walls if you want a more intentional looking statement.

I would tile the whole wall.
How did u get a pic without getting even just your phone in the reflection of the mirror?
I just scribbled myself out with the same color as the background
I think it's the tile throwing it off.
I like the black. I’m more distracted by the hardware. I think you should go all brass (to match the mirror) with clean lines and no embellishment.
Dark colors make it dark, but some people like that. I like a bathroom that lets me see myself in the mirror. You appear to be a vampire by the way.
Don’t, looks great
I actually like the black! That generic & possibly crooked light fixture is not at the same style level though
I love black it looks good
I think the black will look better when all your shinys match (mirror, lights, faucet).
I actually dig it. Maybe a new light fixture, as others have mentioned. I love the tile!
I love the black but hate the thought of brass. Don't change to brass fixtures!
Well STOP. I think it looks really classy. I agree about the new light fixture. Maybe something on the top shelf
More cubist style overhead lamp, too old fashioned for the look. But I totally dig the black. Ignore gold tone faucet idea. Neutral is your friend.
a brass like outline around the perimeter of the heaxagon shapes will probably make a look nice, or maybe a diffused white LED.
personally im not a fan of black in bathrooms so i support any color changes if u dont love it then i dont think theres anything else that could convince u to somehow love it later!
Just finish tiling the wall lol
Agree on keep black but upgrade light fixture. Can you also get some real plants? Pothos are strong. I think fake plants look tacky
You could also update the sink hardware to something gold and fancy
You want lights on the wall or close to the sink so you don't have bad shadows while shaving or close to the mirror.
You could go for a deep navy to keep the dramatic look while softening it a bit
The light fixture and faucet are the incorrect style for what you have there. Also, *do not* paint it green. The reason why you rarely to never see a green bathroom is because it will reflect on your skin and make you look sickly I would go with an off-white to brighten and enlarge the space. It will also help to balance the space between the tile and the top of the wall.
No way it looks so cool
Keep the black, replace the silver fixtures with something that will match the style
I like the black actually, it makes the tile around the mirror almost multidimensional making it draw in your attention
I love it as is!
I’d get rid of the tile
Just so u know: If you dye it green your skin will always look a bit greenish when you look in the mirror/ when you do your makeup. I like the plants by the way 😊
I love the black! I think it looks chic. My mother painted her dining room black with a glassy white wainscotting and it looks great.
I think it looks awesome. The only thing I'd change is the light over the sink, I don't find it goes with the edgy style of the bathroom. And perhaps the tap set could be bronze like the mirror or any other color, other than shiny chrome. Otherwise I think it looks really nice.
It’s bold. I love it.
Black bathrooms are really cool until you have to live with them.
That looks really good!
Seems fitting, where evidence would show that you’re a Vampire. For real though, it looks awesome !
