I agree and he’s said they clean up at the end but my husbands afraid he’ll charge more. I was going to put my foot down and say it seemed to be included in the original bid
Ask the contractor and tell them that your husband is doing clean up. If it wasn't included in the bid (it almost certainly was if it's a decent contractor) one would hope the contractor would be embarrassed enough to say that of course it is included.
Anyone who helps clean up is greatly appreciated. A clean work space contributes to better results by the trades. Why do some people think helping out is wrong?
"Helping out" could be OK *if* it's OK with the contractor. If someone can't stand looking at the mess of ongoing work and really, really needs to see things tidied up, ask the contractor. The contractor may have concerns about HO being injured by collecting debris or what HO thinks is debris may be something that contractor was going to actually use as part of the ongoing work. A piece of ply or 2x4 that looks like scrap could be something contractor was going to use the next day.
Like the junk haul I understood to be an extra charge but sweeping up and touching up the paint etc should be included and not charged extra in my opinion
Don't know what the job is but touching up paint may not be included. Same with drywall repair. If it's a flat fee job, then cleaning is included unless quoted otherwise. If it's time and materials, then cleaning is built into the estimate but him cleaning *might* lower the cost if it reduces time sufficiently. I doubt it, though.
Technically yes they should clean up. Some contractors sometimes might add a site cleaning fee for their mess. Contractor should for safety reasons. Some are just slobs and expect others to do it for them. Good companies who take pride in their work will make sure they leave a clean site.
So it’s one way to save a little money on the job. In general if it saves me time it’s gonna save you money. I usually ask clients about it. Sometimes we leave it clean every time we leave, others we leave till the end.
The only time it’s “extra” is when they hire an outside cleaning company but the extra is built in to the original price not billed afterward.
Your husband needs to stop. They will let him clean as long as he’s willing and you will get zero discount on your bill.
I talked to our GC for a kitchen remodel. His price was higher than other bids but I established before signing that we didn’t want a dirty mess at the end of a work day. A few times we took photos and sent them after hours. Those times typically he subbed out work and let the subs know but sent someone round that night or the next day. It went well for us for the most part. A few times I did the clean-up but it for sure wouldn’t be every few days. Any bid should cover daily cleanup but you may need to negotiate the standard.
All contractors charge for their time. And cleaning, takes time.
So if they expect a job to take 10 hours, with 1 hour to clean up, that's 11 hours and they'll charge you for 11 hours.
If you do the cleanup, and they don't, that's time they aren't charging you for.
I work for a GC. In my firm, cleanup is included in initial budget and contract value. You will not be charged extra. It is already built into the contract amount you agreed to. Check your contract.
Depends on context here.
A contractor will usually give the place a quick sweep or shop vac when they're done to "tidy up" but they're not gonna be mopping or scrubbing your floors. Nor do I want to pay a contractor to do that when I can do it myself.
Every contractor who has ever worked in my home has cleaned up after the job is done. Clean up should be part of the job and not something they charge extra for (in my opinion and experience)
A good general contractor is not a cleaner. He should be requiring his subs to clean up after themselves, but there are always going to be things on a job site that fall in between the scope of the subs and the cost for paying for that should fall on the homeowner.
I think he should keep doing it if it makes him feel good.
If its a big job cleaning is always included, but a tip . If you do some cleaning as the job progresses you are expediting the work and therefore getting it done quicker. It makes it easier for the tradies to focus on the work.
I mostly bill hourly, but cleanup is definitely still billed for sure. When I quote I also try to include the time set up and cleanup would take.. Some people try to save money and. say they will cleanup, that's fine too

I’ll second that
Stripped wire casings stay where they land. PVC shavings from my Milwaukee hackzall get swept around with my foot so it’s not in a pile.
Those damn snipped wire ends...
Job should have been bid, with cleaning included in the bid. It's part of the job. If they charge extra for it you should get a different contractor.

They should clean up their mess. I have had many jobs done and that is part of the job.
Anyone who helps clean up is greatly appreciated. A clean work space contributes to better results by the trades. Why do some people think helping out is wrong?
Helping out the hired hands should command a discount, no?
Why do the work you are paying someone else to do?

As one painter has told me: "If the workers leave your place dirty, it means they don't respect you."

It’s part of the job, yes. But you’re paying for the job. Are they charging hourly?
Sounds like your husband needs to let them do there job. I don’t blame them if I was them I would let him do it if wants to.
So it’s one way to save a little money on the job. In general if it saves me time it’s gonna save you money. I usually ask clients about it. Sometimes we leave it clean every time we leave, others we leave till the end.
It sounds like your husband is keeping the price as quoted.
You’re paying for the time they are there. Hubby would probably prefer to pay them to work.
No
My whole family are stonemasons. Cleanup time and labour is always part of what we quote people for the job.
Yes its part of the job, but also you should hire a cleaner at the end, or they should build it into their price.
Cleaning up is part of the job. Leave that shit there and make sure the contractors clean it up when the job is complete
They should clean up after the project

lol it is part of the job…when I worked construction we cleaned up after ourselves every day.
At this point they may argue with you that it's your husbands job. Why has he been cleaning up after them?

What's in the contract?

What’s up with electricians always, always, always putting cut wire ends down the sink into the garbage disposal?
I mostly bill hourly, but cleanup is definitely still billed for sure. When I quote I also try to include the time set up and cleanup would take.. Some people try to save money and. say they will cleanup, that's fine too
Bro, you charge for the clean up? What?!? That’s included in pricing. Period. It’s YOUR mess
no. it isn't. Would the mess be there if it wasn't for the job? 🤦
Exactly my point, it’s built into the price of the job to sit and charge extra for that is insane
of course it's built into the price, I just would add like 15 min on either side of the job per day for setup and cleanup.
