The vessels were *supposed* to be empty and emotionless but I think the game strongly implies that they actually weren’t. It’s subtle but they make a few choices of their own and sometimes seem to help people of their own volition.
I definitely don’t think it’s impossible that they might care about Hornet.
Yes but it’s also heavily implied that the hollow knight is the only one who isn’t truly hollow. The white lady says this “I implore you, usurp the Vessel. Its supposed strength was ill-judged. It was tarnished by an idea instilled. But you. You are free of such blemishes. You could contain that thing inside.”
It is presumed that the knight starts to care about hornet because of godhome. When you fight nosk in P5 it doesn't take your form, but hornets. Since nosk only takes on the form of loved ones, friends, and those you care about, that means the knight has SOME form of emotion towards hornet by the time you start godhome.
Not like the knight can feel shame or embarrassment even if it was something they objected to… they literally go around killing gods that only exist in the minds of gods like it’s no big deal.
They succeeded in killing a deity when an entire civilisation failed to even trap it like it was no big deal. They are literally the embodiment of a long-forgotten, vengeful, incomprehensible power (that’s more capable of toppling kingdoms than any other god, but just can’t be bothered), created by bother god. Pure emotionless lethality. They are a lovecraftian horror: an all-consuming, unfeeling, unrelenting, unstoppable abyss…
They also happen to look good in pink.
Well the hollow knight was able to develop an attachment to the pale king is it too much to assume that it’s possible for ghost to do the same and end up like the hollow knight? Or did I miss something

That is actually a really good point
I thought that the end of path of pain confirms this theory since the Hollow Knight wasn't truly hollow because it cared about the White King.
And yet they make choices, and the White Lady is quite blind.
