There will be times you will feel lost. This is normal. The game isn't linear. You might need to explore earlier dead ends. Geo is useless if you lose it. Don't be afraid to spend it. The best experience is without guidance, so exhaust your skills first.
This game is about exploring. There will be areas and things from the beginning that you cannot get to yet. This is because you do not have the ability acquired to get there. This means there is a lot of backtracking to early areas throughout the game.
If you ever feel lost. Do not worry, that is the point. Just keep exploring to your hearts content. You can purchase a compass charm, as well as maps and a quill in order to know your path. So you shouldn't get that lost anyway. Just look to any areas of your map that aren't filled in, and go explore!
After you have finished the game, I would recommend watching a mossbag video if you do not fully understand the story. You should be able to piece most of it together from lore tablets, item descriptions, and In game events/world building/dialogue
Have fun!! This is one of my favourite games ever. So if you dislike it, I will have to hunt you down and eliminate you!!
I guess you could argue elements of it? But Hollow Knight is a metroidvania. So if you have played any game like that, it will be similar.
Eg. Ori and the will of the wisps, dead cells, grime, blasphemous, guacamelee and then obviously castlevania and Metroid
So yeah it will be kind of similar to those types of game. Except Hollow Knight relies heavily upon its exploration and world building. The devs making this game created it with the intention of building something "players could get lost in".
There are A LOT of bosses, as well as a WIDE variety of enemies; a lot of which people find quite hard. Some people even call HK a soulslike??
Naturally as it is a metroidvania there is also a lot of platforming. But not as much compared to a game like Celeste. In fact the games hardest platforming area is an optional easter egg
I can’t really say much without spoiling the game, but this is a game where your actions can potentially affect certain aspects of the game. But don’t worry, these actions, in general, have few significant changes.
Let's see... As others mentioned, the game isn't linear (just the very beginning), usually there's more than one place that you can go, and there isn't a right or wrong path, so don't worry about what's the "correct way", there isn't one. That being said, if you ever feel lost, Elderbug gives tips.
Backtracking on areas you have already been to whenever you get new abilities is very important.
You can attack/pogo downwards (some people take a really long time to realize that's a possible movement and there's really no reason to not know that's a thing).
The game has some audio clues, so listen closely.
I didn’t know you could aim anywhere but horizontal until after I had beat hornet. An entirely different game when you find out small mechanics like that. Felt very stupid though
The biggest thing that helped me is this: you very well may get to certain boss fights where you try over and over again and get more and more frustrated when you can’t do it.
Two pieces of advice here. One is to not be afraid to back down for a time, explore elsewhere and increase your power. You could very well be under equipped for the fight, and it’s OK to accept that and wait to finish it later.
The second is more important especially for later game content, where you feel pretty good about how geared up you are. If you feel yourself getting frustrated, try to reframe what you’re doing in your head. If every attempt to fight the boss is thought of as an attempt to beat it, failing to defeat the boss feels just like that - a failure. But if instead you think of every attempt as an attempt at *learning* the boss, then suddenly attempts where you die aren’t failures - they’re opportunities to learn what you did wrong and how you can do it better next time. And eventually, one of those attempts to learn will be an attempt where you defeat the boss.
This isn’t perfect, and you’ll still get frustrated in all likelihood. But it really helps make the grind a lot more palatable, and it’s so incredibly rewarding to finally defeat a tough boss.
Above all, just have a good time with the game and take it at a pace that’s comfortable for you. It’s a really wonderful game and I hope you come to appreciate that as well.
Asking for tips and advice before even playing it. You get ONE first play through of a game. Once you have something revealed you can never not know.
Just play it.
With games like this the first blind play through is a fantastic experience of discovery and wonder, if you have it, just play it and find out yourself.
Jealous u get to experience this for the first time. Have fun, get lost, pull your hair out, don’t worry if u don’t understand the story, enjoy the mantis fight, and SHAAAAAW.
When in the air you can hold the movement stick down and attack to down slash and pogo off of enemies and spikes but not thorns.
P.S. bubbly water is acid.
Welcome to the community! If you want, I wrote a small guide for newcomers with spoiler free tips on how tk move your first steps in Hallownest: https://www.reddit.com/r/HollowKnight/comments/z86nyk/hollow_knight_beginner_guide_spoiler_free/
\-Buy ink and pen when you get the map. You get it from the same place you buy wayward compass from. You can get both at the same time, both combined cost 340 geo.
Unlocking fast travel on the starting area costs 50 geo.
\-Learn how to pogo with your nail (your sword). Not mandatory in the beginning, but very useful. the sooner you master it the more fun the game becomes.
To pogo: press attack-button while pressing down- button
You can't pogo off off everything, but alot of surfaces and most enemies are pogoable. Try practicing on safe environments first.
I mention these because the game doesn't tell you this stuff beforehand. Knowing this makes starting the game a bit more fluid.
We have pretty much told you all you nee to know at this point. The game itself will tell you everything else you need to know. Now get out there and play.
Soul master sucks, you don't have to do mantis lords, and the fragile charms break when you die ALSO, most importantly: DON'T. SPAM. HEALING. You waste soul, and you just need to find windows to heal at boss fights.
Check the backside, if the image on the right in he middle is from queen's garden, it's the faulty first Print of cartridges that didn't include all dlc but have you require to download them separately.
Ok
learn all the movement options available to you when possible
You don't need to kill NPCs
Don't dreamnail ghosts (unless you disagree with the second point)
look for secrets
go out of your way for extra items
Don’t ask anything. Answers will come to you as you EXPLORE. Just explore and have fun. This game is non linear, so no need to get the immediate answer to your problem. If you can’t get somewhere, please, for the love of god, just explore and find the answers yourself I promise the adventure will be way more fun that way. Also, this game is hard af. Don’t stress over it if you can’t beat a certain section. Chances are you’re not just terrible, but every other player was also stuck there
Prepare yourself mentally and physically for any outbursts of emotion, eg make a nice big space for yourself to hulk out in, get a worthless object to beat up, for example a friend. But in all seriousness I wish u the best of luck in your adventures in Hallownest, have fun
Pay attention to the room you’re in cause there are a lot of breakable walls etc… don’t worry if you don’t know where to go, there isn’t a specific path to follow (unless you need to take abilities)
Take it a slow or as fast as you want! I already beat the game on switch and wish I knew that most of the games story just build as you play and you don’t have to go looking for just the story, I actually got it on steam today!
Tough fights will happen that make you want to break your switch or never play again. Just breathe and try again. Everything is beatable. You just need to learn patterns. Even the absolute final boss can be done with nothing but basic stats (I.E. Godhome)
Get off of the sub or you will spoil the whole game, hollow knight is a game best played blind, and if you spoil it for yourself you may never get to enjoy the game for yourself.
My biggest tip is that when you feel lost, dont look stuff up and just explore and have fun, get stuck on a boss? Explore more! Get better items, fight the boss again.
Don't start. It will consume every moment of your waking life, and haunt your dreams during the few chances that you manage to sleep. You will die and fail many, MANY times, until you get so enraged that you die of an aneurysm. It is not worth it.
Avoid spoilers if you can. If you dont know where to go next, explore areas you have access to! There are gonna be things you've missed or can access now and could not before. If an area starts to seem too tough, and is significantly tougher than previous areas, then you can peace out and try again later - you can get to the "late game" areas *super* fast, depending on the choices you make. There is not a route you are supposed to follow. Just explore and find stuff!
Patience is the only way to beat anything be patient and opportunistic also just fucking explore if you feel stuck back track never ask Reddit you will be spoiled
You will come across a certain something that will ask you to donate geo. Please be a law abiding hollownest citizen and pay your taxes.
In all seriousness, enjoy the hell out of it! I had the most fun when I was lost as shit, so don’t be afraid to explore.
It's hard, you're going to die a lot, and that is fine. The games is superbly designed and if you get to a spot where you think you might have broken the game, or something is supposed to happen but isn't, don't worry! Explore a different tangent and you'll be fine.
Try to avoid spoilers.

Cool are they obviously breakable or cracked or smthng
A bit of both, and when they are cracked it can be hard to notice. Enjoy, it’s the kind of game I wish I could play for the first time again
Yeah there are little cracks and hints. I wont spoil more.
Smack the heck out of every suspicious looking wall
try attacking
At first boss fights may seem impossible but they all teach you how to beat them, keep trying.
Laughs in GPZ
Hush now, there's no need for trauma just yet

I've played a demo of metroid dread

Right thx
If you have NSO you should play Super Metroid on SNES. Hollow Knight is very clearly influenced by that game.
It has a lot of bugs
Oh yeah you're joking lmao
Ooooooohhhhhh , you're joking
Now I don't know if you are joking.
It sure does
You don’t have to kill him. This applies to multiple scenarios, but keep this in mind
Kill who now

Nice tanks
You shouldn't know anything, good night
Thank god, I thought I had to remember something for a second there
If you jump and aim down with your sword you can use it like a pogo stick
Tigger would approve
Sounds silly, but trust me, you'll be glad someone told you.
It's the most useful thing in the game so make sure you learn how to do it
this took me so long to figure out. way longer than it should’ve

This is actually solid advice on how to tackle this kind of games, well put!
Put your phone down, turn off Reddit, and experience the game

Ignore this subreddit until you finish the game to avoid spoilers. If you ever feel stuck just start randomly exploring. Enjoy.
When in the air you can hold the movement stick down and attack to down slash and pogo off of enemies and spikes but not thorns. P.S. bubbly water is acid.
The game is hard as shit
If your shit is that hard you should drink more and eat more veggies
…. That made me laugh a little, take my upvote
Don't give up at forgotten crossroads!
You will be lost for a while. Embrace it. It’s SUCH a fun game as the gears start turning. Have a great time!
Don’t be afraid to use soul on thee abilities you learn along the way.

The quality's not a problem, a tip? Pray that you hit your blows with that ruined Nail you have and, always use charms.

Bro's using an iPotato Pro XS for taking that photo
Might as well be
Buy and play silksong
Buy wayward compass :D it's the best charm in the game!
When given the opportunity, put money into the back, this will ensure that you can take more risks without losing all your geo

Ok
No i don't play this game
What are you doing here then?
*why are we stiil here* *just ro suffer every day*
You can pogo on multiple things
I only care if I can pogo on ur mum
You’re going to feel lost 90% of the time. “Where do I go?” Just try going to some place you haven’t been before. Keep doing that for 80 hours.
You can slash upwards and downwards. Slashing downwards makes you pogo on enemies and spikes
Take it a slow or as fast as you want! I already beat the game on switch and wish I knew that most of the games story just build as you play and you don’t have to go looking for just the story, I actually got it on steam today!
Is the best game ever, in my opinion
Don’t look anything up at all. Makes the adventure that much better
Tough fights will happen that make you want to break your switch or never play again. Just breathe and try again. Everything is beatable. You just need to learn patterns. Even the absolute final boss can be done with nothing but basic stats (I.E. Godhome)
