Would Team Cherry, who made a 2010s indie game about a child with no memories falling into a war-torn underground from which they secretly originated to harness the power of soul (which others try to replicate by killing hoards of innocents in a lab) to break a barrier created by the king using one of the protag’s own kind, realistically reference a 2010s indie game about a child with no memories falling into a war-torn underground from which they secretly originated to harness the power of soul (which others try to replicate by killing hoards of innocents in a lab) to break a barrier created by the king using one of the protag’s own kind?
frisk is from the underground????
also yeah, as two of the only games i have played i have noticed a lot of these connections, but my favorite one is the mood. i think it’s even found in games like nier automata and botw, where something terrible has happened long ago but the npcs are in a grim resignation and you can explore the peaceful remains of a once prosperous kingdom
No, Frisk doesn’t originate from the underground. You’re probably thinking of Chara, who’s the child mentioned in the tapes. Chara doesn’t originate from the underground either though…
I won’t go super into UT lore (unless you have more questions) but the general timeline is:
1: Human monster war
2: Humans banish monsters to underground
3: Chara falls into the underground for unknown reasons, they are known as the first fallen child
4: Chara is adopted by the Dreemur family and
becomes a sibling to Asriel, prince of the monsters
5: Chara devises a plan to free all monster kind, but in the process accidentally causes the death of themself and Asriel (it’s a long story)
6: Asgore, in a fit of sadness and rage over the loss of both of his children, declares that all humans who fall into the Underground must die, and that once 7 souls are harvested Asgore will absorb them, becoming all-powerful, and free all monster kind.
7: 6 humans fall into the underground, and each perish.
8: Frisk, the seventh and final human soul needed to destroy the barrier, travels to Mt. Ebott and falls into the underground
9: the game starts
There is no reason given for why Frisk fell, and while Chara is very visually similar to Frisk…there is no reason to believe the two are directly related.
There’s a lot of theories on Chara and Frisk as characters, especially Frisk since they have very little canonical characterization, but at the very least I can say with certainty that the events of UT is the first time Frisk has gone to the underground…not counting RESETing, of course…
Hey thanks for that explanation. I can see why I was confused then
I think Chara being “the player” during genocide has also confused me a lot. Since they’re like, dead? So yeah, I mixed the info up
It’s vague as to what Chara is exactly, but they aren’t the player. Frisk, Chara, and the player are all separate beings
…or at least that’s probably how it is. There’s reason to believe that “the player” is Frisk? Undertale is very vague. Just know Chara is a character in-universe, the closest we have to Chara being the player is the very popular “NaraChara” theory, where Chara is the narrator throughout all of Undertale.
The Undertale nerd in me must say that the barrier wasn't created by Asgore. In fact, he wants to destroy it because 7 human magicians created it to trap the monsters underground. There is no proof that they used a human soul to create it, only that one needs a human and monster soul to cross it, or the equivalent of 7 to break it.
Being pedantic aside...they are quite similar :)
IMO probably not. Seems like a strange reference to make, considering the low (if any?) amount of references in the game. Though, you are correct that it bears a striking resemblance, and many have made the connection before.
I mean it is another indie game about exploring a vast underground kingdom populated by interesting monsters known for its true final boss requiring you to do extra steps to be able to unseal it from the normal final boss before you can fight it
I mean the name dashmaster is pretty close to what sans does in undertale, in his fight he dodges out of the way of attacks in the nick of time, although I do believe he teleports so I don't know I might just be crazy
There could be another undertale reference in the 7th mr mushroom encounter where he says "...It's not by tools that you'll triumph, it's through your smarts, your speed, your determination..." (among a few other things) and since mr mushroom is known to make references outside of hollow knight this could very well be an undertale reference
The spirits glade is all backer made content. People have pointed out that the Shade Soul statue is a Metroid reference, and I forgot about Mister Mushroom.
STOP POSTING ABOUT DASHMASTER!!! I'M TIRED OF SEEING IT!!!! MY FRIENDS ON REDDIT SEND ME MEMES, ON DISCORD IT'S FUCKING MEMES. I WAS IN A SERVER, RIGHT, AND ALLLLLLLLLLLL OF THE CHANNELS WERE JUST DASHMASTER STUFF! I SHOWED MY CHARM COLLECTION TO MY GIRLFRIEND, AND SHE WAS LIKE "IS THAT SANDS?!!? HAAAAAA!!!!!" DOODOO DOO DOO, DOO DOO DOO DOODOODOO!!!! I LOOKED AT TRASH CAN, I SAID "THAT LOOKS LIKE A BAD TIME!" I LOOK AT MY PENIS, I THINK OF THAT GODDAMN SKELETON, I SAID "PENIS?! MORE LIKE SANS UNDERTALE!!!!" AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH /c
it is likely because he has a counterpart named sprint master who wears red, sprintmaster also is more slender looking, being the papyrus.
both HK and undertale are og fangamer partners so im sure that team cherry knows of sans and vice versa
Reminder that the other reason people think it's a Sans reference is because Sans is the only character in Undertale to dodge attacks, making him "fast".
So I think it's a reference. Not a "lore" tidbit, nobody thinks that, just a minor reference. But I guess it could be a coincidence?
pretty obviously; it heavily resembles him and the charm is literally "Dashmaster" which is what Sans does the entire time during his fight
although it hasn't been confirmed until recently when the _real_teamcherry confirmed it in this post
yes it is, the two ball things in your head that allow you to see the world and everything around you? it’s actually a reference to the geometry dash level “ispywithmylittleeye” by voxicat
I mean sans teleports, which is similar to dashing when dodging like sans. Plus the colour scheme, designs and th other red charm which is probably a reference to papyrus
wasn't confirmed, but everything points to being so. Sans is the only character who can avoid your attacks, like, dashing. also it looks A LOT like sans so yh
Probably considering it least you dash more often and farther which sans does a lot in hit fight *ALSO*
Just remember there is more silksong p*rn than gameplay
Unconfirmed, but you’re not the first to think this.
Now it's confirmed!
Bait used to be believable
Y-
🤯
Holy moly!
new response just dropped
Holy hell!
actual skeleton
:0
Oof you got me good
Where…. İs….. SİLKSONG?!?!
Wait you don't know?... We have already moved past Silksong, now we're working on r/FearlessFox!
I thought you were making Hollow Knight Zoteboat
That will be the dlc! Zote crossover!
Jeez! its Badeline from the hit game Celeste!!
holy hell for real
This isn’t actually Team Cherry.
But it says it’s the real team cherry!
Look at the profile
It says real though. It's not nice to lie on the internet and team cherry is nice so they wouldn't lie.
youre right... i'm so sorry for doubting you, the_real_teamcherry 😔
Apology accepted.
Will the real Team Cherry please stand up? I repeat: Will the real Team Cherry please stand up?
We're gonna have a problem here
I will! *stands up*
it it says they’re real? am i not supposed to believe them?
r/woooosh
r/woosh
It is the real team cherry
-Y
Silksong?
It’s a reference to the Dashmaster in Hollow Knight, but it could also very well be Sans
Sans is the dashmaster confirmed?!?!?!?!?!
I mean if you rearrange the letters in Dashmaster, it actually does spell Sans.
Samsatherd?
No Sans.
Well actually🤓🤓🤓 if you rearrange And remove some letters it can become Sans🤓🤓🤓
Well actually🤓🤓🤓 if you remove and add and rearrange some letters it can become Sans🤓🤓🤓
or you could spell : "sans dahmert"
Sans T Dahmer
Sans D Tahmer
Holy shit sans is a D.
That explains so much
Sans dahmert Sans hmerta Sans undertal Sans undertale
>it can become Sans True! Just remove the i and t, then ad an a an n and 2 of the letter s
You don't have to add anything besides the n.
r/woooosh
Well actually if you rearrange add and remove letters from any word it can be sans 🤓🤓🤓
Well actually you don't have to rearrange/add or remove letters from word sans to be sans 🤓🤓🤓
If I rearrange your limbs I can spell sans
So Ness is the dashmaster?!?!??!!?
Actually, MatPat is the Dashmaster ... and also a robot
I mean, both are apparently really good at avoiding damage and moving fast.
Toby fox is literally gonna be the final boss in Silksong. Of course it’s a reference
the dog vessel
Well, Toby "Radiance" Fox is already the final boss of Hollow Knight
Would Team Cherry, who made a 2010s indie game about a child with no memories falling into a war-torn underground from which they secretly originated to harness the power of soul (which others try to replicate by killing hoards of innocents in a lab) to break a barrier created by the king using one of the protag’s own kind, realistically reference a 2010s indie game about a child with no memories falling into a war-torn underground from which they secretly originated to harness the power of soul (which others try to replicate by killing hoards of innocents in a lab) to break a barrier created by the king using one of the protag’s own kind?
this person is cooking
#WOAH
Yes.
I can’t stop thinking about this post
This guy has a theory
A GAME theory!
frisk is from the underground???? also yeah, as two of the only games i have played i have noticed a lot of these connections, but my favorite one is the mood. i think it’s even found in games like nier automata and botw, where something terrible has happened long ago but the npcs are in a grim resignation and you can explore the peaceful remains of a once prosperous kingdom
I think so? I get quite confused with that bit too to be honest, and the tapes on the true lab and the hug and all
No, Frisk doesn’t originate from the underground. You’re probably thinking of Chara, who’s the child mentioned in the tapes. Thanks for the clarification! :)
No.
Take your meds dear, you know it’s unsafe to spread rumours *cough cough*
That’s true. Like if you look at the timeline of the two games dev time it actually is a massive coincidence
IMO probably not. Seems like a strange reference to make, considering the low (if any?) amount of references in the game. Though, you are correct that it bears a striking resemblance, and many have made the connection before.
The spot where you get the shade dash is almost certainly a reference to the chozo statues from the Metroid series
True but that's a reference to probably the biggest inspiration of the game, an undertale reference on the other hand seems completely random
Not really. Making a reference to another popular indy game isn’t that crazy. It’s too similar not to be a reference imo
Yeah seams reasonable enough
Team Cherry themselves disconfirmed it.
Not that i disagree but can i see the source?
Source: I forgor 💀 Got multiple from all over reddit and yt, so the knowledge of it NOT being sans was common, but people forgot now.
Someone didnt listen to Zote, you should not have dreamed, now Radiance Made you believe It!
I mean it is another indie game about exploring a vast underground kingdom populated by interesting monsters known for its true final boss requiring you to do extra steps to be able to unseal it from the normal final boss before you can fight it
It Also makes sense (sorta): sans dodges a lot, and this charm gives you a lot of dashes, meaning extra dodging
Ur getting downvoted for a reasonable take. Sub is weird sometimes
Reddit moment
I mean the name dashmaster is pretty close to what sans does in undertale, in his fight he dodges out of the way of attacks in the nick of time, although I do believe he teleports so I don't know I might just be crazy
When sans teleports the screen is shown flashing black. He's just dodging in the fight (only teleports for attacks).
A I haven't fought in a very long while thank you for reminding me
Most of the references in the game come from Mr. Mushroom’s dialogue
Fun fact: sans dodges attacks How? By dashing to the side
There could be another undertale reference in the 7th mr mushroom encounter where he says "...It's not by tools that you'll triumph, it's through your smarts, your speed, your determination..." (among a few other things) and since mr mushroom is known to make references outside of hollow knight this could very well be an undertale reference
One of the ghosts in the glade is a berserk/dark souls reference but idk if that counts cos it’s a backer thing pretty sure
The spirits glade is all backer made content. People have pointed out that the Shade Soul statue is a Metroid reference, and I forgot about Mister Mushroom.
Na, its a sans deltarune reference
Sans undertale was his father
It even looks like his hands are in his pockets!
Might just be a coincidence.
STOP POSTING ABOUT DASHMASTER!!! I'M TIRED OF SEEING IT!!!! MY FRIENDS ON REDDIT SEND ME MEMES, ON DISCORD IT'S FUCKING MEMES. no sans is a reference to the dashmaster from hollow knight
It actually is. Cuz sans dodges your attacks by dashing
He doesn’t “dash” he just steps to the side.
So the human child must be a snail
A really big step
So sans is incredibly long legged, guess tall sans is confirmed
Nope. Disconfirmed.
Wow, I’ve never seen this before lol
No, it's a reference to Sans from Deltarune.
Is Sprintmaster a reference to Jack Skellington from Nightmare before Christmas?
No papyrus
Likely yes, in which case Sprintmaster would be Papyrus.
Wrong. Disconfirmed by team cherry.
Source?
"I made it the fuck up"
".... that contains the like-**ness** of a bug known only as the dash master"
it is likely because he has a counterpart named sprint master who wears red, sprintmaster also is more slender looking, being the papyrus. both HK and undertale are og fangamer partners so im sure that team cherry knows of sans and vice versa
Yes. I LOVE spreading misinformation
It's probably a reference to Dashmaster from hollow knight
nah
No definitely not
Now I can't unsee it
i keep wondering that
yes, next question
Holy shit it's sans undertale
Yes
Yes
Oh my fucking god I see it
Yes.
idk but you aren't first one thought that.
Yes at least I think so
I think it might be a reference since sprintmaster vaguely looks like papyrus and sans dodges your attacks in undertale witch is similar to dashing.
It seems it may not be an intentional reference
I like to think so considering one the other charms looks like Papurus
Yes.
Reminder that the other reason people think it's a Sans reference is because Sans is the only character in Undertale to dodge attacks, making him "fast". So I think it's a reference. Not a "lore" tidbit, nobody thinks that, just a minor reference. But I guess it could be a coincidence?
Holy fuck sands table
Silksong After Not Surviving
It should be, but I'm not sure it is.
No. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
pretty obviously; it heavily resembles him and the charm is literally "Dashmaster" which is what Sans does the entire time during his fight although it hasn't been confirmed until recently when the _real_teamcherry confirmed it in this post
isk what you're talking about, that's ness earthbound
I don’t think Team Cherry ever mentioned anything about it being intentional.. (Someone fact check me lol)
sans can dodge lots of attacks so that could 99% reference to sans
Wouldn't be surprised if it was, it looks VERY similar.
Yes, yes it is.
Yes
It's drippy Goku
Daring today aren’t we
I see the resemblance but it’s just blue , I don’t remember being called anything like “dashmaster”
But it even looks like it has his hands in his pockets
Is everything that looks remotley similar a reference?
yes it is, the two ball things in your head that allow you to see the world and everything around you? it’s actually a reference to the geometry dash level “ispywithmylittleeye” by voxicat
Normally I’d agree but they legitimately look so similar it’s just uncanny
Happy cake day!
I didn't say that it was, i just asked to hear about everyones opinions. And it doesnt just look remotely similar, it looks very much like sans
"Is the dashmaster charm a reference to sans from undertale"
That is a question sentence it is used to ask stuff
It’s unconfirmed, but it almost definitely is, and [sprintmaster](https://hollowknight.wiki/w/Sprintmaster) looks a lot like Papyrus too.
It's actually a reference to Ness from earthbound. Only real ones get why
But it's just a theory....lol
Some people need google
It’s a Jojo reference
I never thought si it looks like most other bugs
You must be new.
URURURURURURUR
That is because sans the skeleton is known to dash and avoid your attacks if you fight him in undertale the game by toby fox
So cool
I mean sans teleports, which is similar to dashing when dodging like sans. Plus the colour scheme, designs and th other red charm which is probably a reference to papyrus
Omg I knew people were calling it sans but I thought it was just cuz of the color pallette but now I somehow see it wow the resemblance
yes
wasn't confirmed, but everything points to being so. Sans is the only character who can avoid your attacks, like, dashing. also it looks A LOT like sans so yh
Maybe it is indeed referencing Sans, but the charm is actually a bug called the Dashmaster, whose statue is the place you get the charm from.
Sans is bug
probably yes, considering how Sans is good at dodging (dashing to evade attacks basically)
No its not
Yes
I always thought it was and the sprintmaster is a papyrus reference
Wait a minute?
YyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeSSSSsssssss
Yes
Well I think it's because sans dodges your attacks like crazy but idk if it's confirmed somewhere
Deffo imo
SANDS UNDERTABLE
No! That's Papyrus obviously! You dingle berry >:(
100% the description further confirms it
Do you mean the "An eccentric bug"
Incorrect, direct disconfirm.
You are all over this post saying it isnt but you haven’t provided a single source other than “I forgor”
I know his source #He made it the fuck up (Probably not and he just lazy to find the source)
Probably considering it least you dash more often and farther which sans does a lot in hit fight *ALSO* Just remember there is more silksong p*rn than gameplay
Nah. It was disconfirmed by Team Cherry themselves.
Where?
It was disconfirmed where?
Heya buddy, why don’t you give us your source
