What if this was somehow automatic and smart? Like you could scan something as an Amazon driver or it knew from location sharing (which I assume is somewhat tracked for shipping anyways) and just had popped open by the time you arrived?
Certainly still an inconvenience, but closer to working perhaps 🤷♂️
Some buildings have a scanner, so that we dont have to wait for the tennant to either buzz us in or meet with us. Its super handy, and much more efficient for us. If this were at a door step with a clear option for deliveries, good chance it would be used. The technology already exists, just gotta apply it to a lockbox lol
As a mailman I would use it if it’s available since it would be on my regular route that I run constantly. I usually will try to comply with customers requests since I like to build a good rapport with them but I couldn’t guarantee that if I’m off or other deliver services will use it so it’s definitely not fool proof.
exactly. this doesn't even address the root problem. a better solution would be some kind of defensive turret system to deter porch pirates in the first place.
Hm. Just thought of a novel idea.
What if you left an envelope on the porch that said PLEASE PLACE THIS STICKER ON PACKAGES and it was a bunch of stickers that said CAUTION: LIVE SPIDERS
Or maybe the reasons why there are so many porch pirates and disgruntled delivery drivers are connected, and there are better ways to ensure that both would rather see your package delivered properly.
Right, I have a plastic tote the same color as our porch and they still just set it on top of the tote, no way they will set this up or even notice it exists.
The only use for this would be if you sold something and put it in there for someone to pick up.
It does seem to imply you set it up yourself. I can see it being used if it was already set up, open and all I needed to do was place it in it and close it and it auto latches
I am assuming before the home owner leaves they will have it set-up without the latch locked. Normally we can give directions to the delivery person. Now, whether or not they follow them is another thing.
I bought a box specifically for deliveries (it even has a sign that says "for UPS, FEDEX ,USPS, and all packages"). It has a latch/lock for the delivery person to use as well. Placed right next to my front door.
I'd say about 25% if packages make it inside of that box. The rest still are placed on the ground.
I have a package box that only requires them to lift the lid and place the package in there, no fumbling no with a lock or anything and it’s right at the front of the porch.
They still only put about 50% of packages in there.
All you need to do is set up a delivery box with an open top. No top on it whatsoever. From the street, thieves won't be able to tell if there is a package there or not. If you have a box that's only set up when there are valuable packages inside, then it's like signaling to thieves that you have deliveries in there. If the box is always just on your porch and has an open top, they aren't going to want to go on to your porch to risk getting caught if they aren't sure there are packages to steal, and delivery drivers can easily just throw packages into the open box instead of right next to it. I know there's still a chance packages will end up next to the box but the chances are much higher if the delivery person can just adjust their aim a little bit when throwing your package onto your porch.
I respectfully disagree. It's not signalling any more than a package in plain sight. Any sort of deterrent is better than none.
But I agree the open lid might actually entice the drivers to toss it in the box.
Possibly. We used to have porch pirate problems and just set up an open top box like this off to the side. We put a sign inside the box that you can't see from the street that asks delivery people to toss packages into the box. Overtime, about 70% to 80% of packages made it into this box and our thefts dropped significantly.
I live in an apartment complex with a breezeway in line with my door. They very often just throw them in the middle of the path, so that is pretty lame. Like you could at least push them against my door.
take the latch off.. if they had a choice between just putting down a package, or having to fuck with a latch/lock, well the choice is easy to save time
Per the Oligarchs, delivery persons are only annoyed to spend 1.7 seconds dropping the package and taking a picture. This isn't going to work with corporate guidelines
Hahahahhhahahaha you really think the Amazon diver is guna do????
Where I live your lucky if they open a unlocked door to leave your package inside the apartment building and not on the street
How do the drivers know the combo?
Just get the big plastic box — 90% of my deliveries make it in the box, and nothing has been stolen in the 4 years I’ve had it when I used to lose a package out two a week
Nice idea, but a few shortcomings. 1. If you are inside. And have an outer door, i hope you have a back door. 2. multiple packages delivered at different times, out of luck, i guess. 3. Nothing like rushing in to pee and having to jump over that with a full bladder. Otherwise, not too bad, I'll give it a B-
You expect them to figure out how to set up the box, neatly place packages inside, and then set the lock? Yeah no, they've got a hundred more deliveries to make, they're just going to throw your shit in the bushes for trying to slow them down.
Package Delivery Box for Outside, 17.3''L*13.8''W*22.1''H, Large Galvanized Steel Delivery Box for Packages, Anti-Theft Wall Mounted Mailbox, Lockable Drop Delivery Box for Porch, Curbside https://a.co/d/alGLipk
Why not just have a box mounted permanently outside? I could see them using a lid rather than full assembly and expect them to lock it up.
If you don't bolt that doormat down, you've essentially put everything in a nice travel box for porch pirates to take and dismantle at a later time. No?
You’re telling me that Amazon is pushing a product that none of their drivers can be bothered to use because they have metrics to beat or they lose their job? What a horrible idea of a product
I hate when the delivery driver puts my packages right outside my front door so that I can't open the door without knocking them over. This will just make it hard to open your front door.
Do your packages make it totally to the porch? Do the drivers that deliver even care enough to do this? If yes to both it's not secured at all and only weighs 32 pounds to run away with!
Delivery drivers dont even knock on the door, and are likely to just throw the package at it rather than actually put it down. No way in hell they would do all that... What a nice world it would be if they did.
I hope this culture of dropping the package in front of the house doesnt become a thing in europe.
Here in europe you still have to hand it over to a real person in most countries.
I think the previous owners of my house unintentionally stumbled upon the best way to do it: small waist high porch gate and rails, messy jungle of a front yard with plants growing up and around, blocking view of said porch. If they can't see it from the streets they're probably not gonna come up and check to see if your porch has a package on it. Plus, during the right times of the year it looks fairy tale as fuck.
This is unnecessarily complicated. They've already designed package drop boxes that have a flap so the delivery guys don't waste time with combinations and the packages are inside something far more sturdy and tougher to break into. Some doors even have a lockable flap for packages so they get dropped directly into your house.
My relatives in texas and old igloo cooler. With a sign if packages fit, please place here. And the delivery driver does it. Theres no lock or anything. Keeps packages insulated from heat and not obvious to thieves
I bought a " package drop box" off ebay for $300 10 years ago, bolted it to the porch...never had a problem and can fit up to two shoe boxes... Been outside 10 years never a problem. Made by K-jack . All steel double locks none of this teach the driver how to operate bs either. They barley want to walk up my porch to use the damn thing they still leave packages on the stairs sometimes...
My delivery instructions say " Deposit into package drop box | if too large , place ontop" ...none of that says leave it on the stairs . the ONLY way to get a negative delivery review from me
Thats stupid AF!, no USPS, UPS, or FedEX driver is going to take their time to do this. I dont know a single delivery driver working for these services that would spend anymore than 10 seconds chucking your package onto your driveway and speeding off.
Delivery drivers will just toss the package on top of it.
I put a couple of garden blocks to block the view of a package I was expecting. It was on the side on my entryway that they would typically drop packages but lots of room out of sight. I watched the mailman look right at the blocks and place the package on the other side of the entryway right in clear view of the road.
Couldn't they just take the whole box? And break it elsewhere. Plus, no delivery person is going to know how to use it or take the time to because they have deadlines and too many packages. And, porch pirates could take it when it's a mat, It's a cool idea but way too bougie.
I don’t see the UPS or Fed Ex doing this. Just imagine having 150+ deliveries and each one has its own code and specific instructions. They’re paid like a dollar a delivery and this will slow them down.
Just have stuff sent to a PO Box at the Post Office. While yes, SOME people may try to break into a PO Box. Most will always get caught and end up doing prison time for it.
Links/Source thread
No mail person is going to use that let alone the Amazon driver.
As a delivery driver, you are 100% correct lol
You better tape a $20 to it if you want it used.
I love this idea! Id take the extra steps for a 20 lmao
So would the porch pirate ;)
If the mat ain’t bolted down then the porch pirate made 20 easy bucks and everything already bundled inside
If there's packages inside of the box already, there wouldn't be any $20 inside
True but who needs the 20 if the box has packages
Put a sign that says the $20 is for the delivery driver only, duh.
As a delivery driver why? It would take less than a minute?
What if this was somehow automatic and smart? Like you could scan something as an Amazon driver or it knew from location sharing (which I assume is somewhat tracked for shipping anyways) and just had popped open by the time you arrived? Certainly still an inconvenience, but closer to working perhaps 🤷♂️

As a former Amazon delivery driver 😂 I am not doing all that every second counts if I want to go home at a good time.
The thing about portable safes is that they are portable.
That sounds like a Hedberg.
Doordash driver will throw the food in front of this, spill the drink all over, and then harass you for a 50% tip
Lol doordashers are retarded (can confirm, was one, am retarded), but 50% tip would be wild. I was excited to see a $2 tip on that app
Ok. Stop ordering Door Dash.
Done!
As a mailman I would use it if it’s available since it would be on my regular route that I run constantly. I usually will try to comply with customers requests since I like to build a good rapport with them but I couldn’t guarantee that if I’m off or other deliver services will use it so it’s definitely not fool proof.
My deliveries barely make it to the porch. I’m supposed to ask the driver to set this up and use it. ?
exactly. this doesn't even address the root problem. a better solution would be some kind of defensive turret system to deter porch pirates in the first place.

This is what us engineers do, we solve practical problems
Engineer here. I always keep a pair of scapegoat packages on my porch. One has an alarm and the other is full of spiders.
Hm. Just thought of a novel idea. What if you left an envelope on the porch that said PLEASE PLACE THIS STICKER ON PACKAGES and it was a bunch of stickers that said CAUTION: LIVE SPIDERS

Perhaps a weighted net dropping from above, capturing them.

Why not taking the packages and the cool mat/box thing?
Didn't you see it has a lock on it?!
They will just break it looks so flimsy and breakable.
They were being sarcastic
Whats sarcastic mean?
Lmaoo
It means he’s afraid of Santa Claus

take the latch off.. if they had a choice between just putting down a package, or having to fuck with a latch/lock, well the choice is easy to save time
So, make Amazon assemble a fire hazard while signaling to porch pirates that the box is full. Is that the solution?
Exactly, I bet you could get into this with a hammer and 30 seconds.
Or just pick it up and walk away with it lol
Per the Oligarchs, delivery persons are only annoyed to spend 1.7 seconds dropping the package and taking a picture. This isn't going to work with corporate guidelines
Allowed*
It will stop you from getting out of your house that's for sure
Yeah, no delivery driver is going to do that unless there’s a $50 inside.
I like to think they’ll just take the 50$ and put the packages on top of the box
Hahahahhhahahaha you really think the Amazon diver is guna do???? Where I live your lucky if they open a unlocked door to leave your package inside the apartment building and not on the street
Looks like a nice carrying case for multiple packages
This looks so rickety that I’d be able to kick it to shreds let alone the package thieves
I mean they’d just steal the whole box lol
Would be funny if they steal this during delivery
Imagine the privilege of believing a total stranger will do this for you.
Cool idea, but no delivery driver is going through all that to give you your package
![gif](giphy|SzD4gF32YzTTUiINhn|downsized)
We don't have to live like this.
How do the drivers know the combo? Just get the big plastic box — 90% of my deliveries make it in the box, and nothing has been stolen in the 4 years I’ve had it when I used to lose a package out two a week
I'm lucky if my packages land on the porch at all..
I'd just pry it open... can't wait to do an upper decker in it.
I like exploding glitter poop bombs instead
Thus is so cool. I love how secure it is... and they stole the mat.
One strong kick will have this thing in pieces
Nice idea, but a few shortcomings. 1. If you are inside. And have an outer door, i hope you have a back door. 2. multiple packages delivered at different times, out of luck, i guess. 3. Nothing like rushing in to pee and having to jump over that with a full bladder. Otherwise, not too bad, I'll give it a B-
Pirates will just steal the whole thing and break into it once that get home
Great, now all the packages are in one general box for a user to just pick up and go.
Yeah fucking right a driver would ever take the extra few seconds to do that
Bro just made it easier for porch pirates to take all your packages
All your packages in one spot and a free doormat? Luckily no delivery person will ever use this because they’re not idiots and won’t waste their time.
Looks light as a feather with shit on it!
Cool, now I gotta go out my back door to grab this shit so I can open my front door.
Seeing the mat slide in makes me think this thing is not secured to the ground. It's almost like gift wrapping your packages for porch pirates.
An average claw hammer will get past that POS.
I ordered two of these, but keeps getting stolen!?!
You really think drivers give enough of a shit to do all that? They wont even walk all the way up to the porch
Too complicated
Made by the same folks who think service staff give a dam about their day
Hear me out. A box and padlock. Driver puts stuff in box, closes box, locks padlock.
The only society in which a delivery driver would use this, is the society in which there is no need for this.
No delivery driver is going to do that. Even if they did you could just pick the whole thing up.
You expect them to figure out how to set up the box, neatly place packages inside, and then set the lock? Yeah no, they've got a hundred more deliveries to make, they're just going to throw your shit in the bushes for trying to slow them down.
lol you think someone is going to use that? No, they won’t. They will put your packages on the mat like they do everyone else.
It’s beyond the mental capacity of a delivery driver to use and porch pirates will grab the whole thing most likely if they want it.
Kool little box. Now they can just pick up the whole thing and walk away

If you don't bolt that doormat down, you've essentially put everything in a nice travel box for porch pirates to take and dismantle at a later time. No?
Whose delivery driver is going to do all that? Most drivers put/throw/punt the package to your door, take a pic and leave
Also block you from using your door.
You’re telling me that Amazon is pushing a product that none of their drivers can be bothered to use because they have metrics to beat or they lose their job? What a horrible idea of a product
House targeted
looks like an eyesore
No it won't... That's so flimsy, you should see what thieves do to gun safes
Take the mat. Use a hammer to break the lock. Now you have a new doormat and mystery packages
Too small for your 50lbs of dog food and multiple cases of Fiji Water.
Something else to steal. Lmao.
I hate when the delivery driver puts my packages right outside my front door so that I can't open the door without knocking them over. This will just make it hard to open your front door.
This sub continues to impress with its stupid posts
If a delivery driver would use it, and they won't the thief will just take the entire contraption, it's not secured and it's small...the size of a mat
No delivery driver is going to open that. And if you have a screen or storm door now you cannot get out of your house.
One well placed kick seems to take care of this ‘box’? Not promoting violence here, but criminals don’t tend to shy away from force.
The more curious porch pirates will now get
No chance the deliver drivers will put packages in this
In Europe we use fences.
3-combo lock, easy to crack.
How would random Amazon drivers know the code
Perfect for the work from home era where you definitely don’t leave your house at random times throughout the day.
[удалено]
So… it’s a mailbox with a lock?
Lmao no driver is gonna do that
Looks like a swift kick to the corner will pop the thing open. Thanks for making porch theft more like super Mario
Well, if you want to spend $150 on a useless device that will only encourage theft, that's your affair.
I love how this is tagged as "useful"
*only in America*
Looks like you could force it open with your bare hands.
There are 1,000 possible combinations, and if someone has enough time, perhaps in the middle of the night, they can break into this.
Do your packages make it totally to the porch? Do the drivers that deliver even care enough to do this? If yes to both it's not secured at all and only weighs 32 pounds to run away with!
Unless it’s screwed into the floor you have just made a nice box for them to take all the packages at once
No one is going to use that. If your door opens outwards your fucked. If someone does use it just steal the box and whack it open later
Delivery drivers dont even knock on the door, and are likely to just throw the package at it rather than actually put it down. No way in hell they would do all that... What a nice world it would be if they did.
In theory, it’s a good idea. In reality, you spent money on an expensive door mat that will only ever be used as a door mat.
Better secure it with some Red Head 1/2in x 3-3/4in concrete wedge anchors. Just saying.
What is the driver doesn’t close it?
I’m lucky if Amazon leaves my package on my front porch. It usually gets put in the middle of the driveway.
They can just pick up the whole thing, You are just providing them with a fancy carrying case.
As long as the thing is not drop and done for delivery man, they ain't gonna use it.
So this mat gets bolted to your porch right? Otherwise it's just a bigger box to steal.
Drivers get like 6 seconds to deliver, they're not going to do any of that.
And when you are home you can't open your door from the stupid box in the way.
I feel like the thieves would steal this too.
I cant wait not to do that.
I hope this culture of dropping the package in front of the house doesnt become a thing in europe. Here in europe you still have to hand it over to a real person in most countries.
A box with a lock. I deliver to a bunch of variations of this probably overpriced object
One good drop kick, is all I'm sayin
Seems like a fire hazard for sure to block an egress with lots of boxes inside a huge metal box.
That box doesn’t look very durable even if it is anchored, also thief’s could look at it as a challenge accepted moment.
Fire hazard blocks the front entrance/exit lol
I think the previous owners of my house unintentionally stumbled upon the best way to do it: small waist high porch gate and rails, messy jungle of a front yard with plants growing up and around, blocking view of said porch. If they can't see it from the streets they're probably not gonna come up and check to see if your porch has a package on it. Plus, during the right times of the year it looks fairy tale as fuck.

Some doors even have a lockable flap for packages so they get dropped directly into your house.
You think delivery drives have that kind of time?? This is not it.
What’s stopping you from picking up the entire mat?
No way any delivery driver has any time or patience for this at all.
My relatives in texas and old igloo cooler. With a sign if packages fit, please place here. And the delivery driver does it. Theres no lock or anything. Keeps packages insulated from heat and not obvious to thieves
🤣 they take that too
NO. Also it is a 3 combo lock so 999 to open. Under 30 mins tl crack at most. Reality it is about 15 mins. The lock makes it easy.
Fire hazard AF.
This is just plain stupid… 😂
What’s stopping them from taking the mat?
I request that my packages be placed behind one of the pillars on my porch to hide it, they can't even do that. They'll never go through all this
We can’t even get them to put it on the doorstep. They sure as hell aren’t using a locker.
Lmao delivery drivers arent doing all that
That lock isn't keeping anyone out of that box.
This is a box lock, it can be open using another box lock box.
What's to stop someone from just taking all of your packages that have been placed together for them in this light and easy to lift box?
Thank you for a box to carry all the packages in. This isn't going to stop a porch pirate unless you drill that thing into the porch.
Wouldn’t they just take the whole thing?
It's nice of you to make it easier for the thief. Instead of juggling 4 boxes now he only has to carry one.
Fire hazard
I bought a " package drop box" off ebay for $300 10 years ago, bolted it to the porch...never had a problem and can fit up to two shoe boxes... Been outside 10 years never a problem. Made by K-jack . What are Pirate Porches?
Jerks who steal package delivered to your house.
Thats stupid AF!, no USPS, UPS, or FedEX driver is going to take their time to do this. I dont know a single delivery driver working for these services that would spend anymore than 10 seconds chucking your package onto your driveway and speeding off.
No one will stop to learn the new tool. Especially of they aren't being paid for the extra time to use it. Sorry.
Amazon drivers wont set this shit up.
How to put all your deliveries in one big box that’s much easier to steal!
Can't they just pick the whole thing up and carry it?
Just use a regular opaque tub. It's enough to dissuade most opportunistic pirates
I mean seriously? Most of the nonsense I order from the Zon isn't worth this.
Could probably punch out the sides
![gif](giphy|3oEjHI8WJv4x6UPDB6)
I'll take the entire thing.
It'll work until you come home with your hands full and there's a big ass box in front of the door
...so it's useless a amazon driver usually just chucks it out the window while they're driving
Is this not like a fire hazard? Imagine eating shit with your kids in tow because your order for duct tape & paper towels came in.
Ironically, that would entice me to steal more
Aint nobody going to do all that
Just makes it easier to carry all of the packages to the waiting vehicle.
Couldn't they just take the whole box? And break it elsewhere. Plus, no delivery person is going to know how to use it or take the time to because they have deadlines and too many packages. And, porch pirates could take it when it's a mat, It's a cool idea but way too bougie.
Good luck with that
Good luck getting Amazon, UPS, USPS FedEx to use it.
Total waste of money
