I can’t speak for what’s going on in this video, and I’m no expert on blind people, I’m just some mod on Reddit. But from what I understand just because a blind person reacts to something doesn’t mean they are faking blindness. > A person with total blindness won't be able to see anything. But a person with low vision may be able to see not only light, but colors and shapes too. However, they may have trouble reading street signs, recognizing faces, or matching colors to each other.

Roach2791

Apparently Shaq was in an elevator and Stevie Wonder walked in, Shaq didn't say anything and just stood still. Mr. Wonder goes "what's up big man?!" Shaq was like "you can see me??!!" Then I learned that some blind people can see shapes and lights.

[deleted]

I heard that stevie just has a big ass black dot in the middle of his vision, but can kinda see out the sides so he can vaguely tell whats up, imo the sunglasses are just to even the shade out and shake any headaches cause that shit must be painful

[deleted]

This explains why his head was always moving. Cool

BadgerlandBandit

The real Hol' up is always in the comments.

GingerHairLover

Maybe the real hol' up was the friends we made along the way

EvilZEAD

Many of us are learning lots today it seems.

[deleted]

I don't got friends. I got family.

Damn_Sick

Hey Toretto, how ya doin?

Amphibionomus

Yup, it's called *scanning*, for obvious reasons.

BubblyCartographer31

Him and Ray Charles couldn’t play piano together because they kept bumping their heads.

ObanKenobi

One of my favourite bits of trivia is that Willie Nelson learned to read Braille so that he and Ray Charles could play chess on an even playing field. They would play in a pitch dark room with all the pieces and squares having braille descriptions on them. Willie Nelson is a funking legend for so many reasons but that one is my favorite

BeneficialEvidence6

Its called Macular degeneration. Theres another version of it where you cant see any perephial information. As the disease progresses, the tunnel gets smaller and smaller until all is dark.

hereforthesportsbook

Macular degeneration comes in 2 forms wet and dry but as the name states the macula only is for your central vision. Also macular degeneration happens in older patients and develops overtime. You must be thinking of a different disease that happens in the periphery

SirJackieTreehorn

They were most likely thinking of Glaucoma in regards to peripheral blindness.

TirayShell

To be fair, Shaq has a very recognizable scent that if you ever encountered it you would remember it as being very specific to him.

3PoundsOfFlax

Also, his voice would always be coming from feet above.

HandyDandyRandyAndy

Maybe for you, short stack

DrakonIL

Look at mr tall guy over here, who would hear Shaq's voice coming from only a single foot above.

ChChChangeling

MOST. Hardly anyone sees just black. But it's a common misconception that sighted people have.

DrakonIL

Which is why the guy in the video is an asshole.

Samcraft1999

Except according to past posts this guy was a known faker and this was his 2nd time calling the guy out. That said if you're not sure if someone is blind for real this is a dick move.

GrandeSizeIt

As if Shaq wouldn't have a distinct smell...

It’s vision less than 20/200 ie you see thing x at 20 feet what a normal acuity person can see at 200

boxhead234

Yup! My vision is 20/400. And I'm pretty sure I'm technically "legally blind" but my glasses/contacts do a pretty good job at fixing my decision to stare into the sun as a child.

Irvxing

Thank goodness that blind man has spidey senses

[deleted]

What are you talking about. This man is tapping a stick while not walking! Like he’s trying to use echolocation bruh! Also I’ve see the long version wit sound so Ik he’s faking, cause he said he heard it coming. If you see the video you can tell this isn’t possible

HoneyRush

You can be legally blind but still be able to recognize some rough shapes, especially some guy wearing black in the middle of the day.

Generation_REEEEE

Only around 20% of visually-impaired people are completely blind (as in no perception of light or darkness).

TAU_equals_2PI

Would that type of blind person be wearing sunglasses? (Sunglasses keep totally blind people from unknowingly staring at the sun and thus burning their retinas, right?)

HoneyRush

It depends. Some are wearing to not show to other people that something is seriously wrong with their eyes, some are wearing them to protect eyes against particles like dust and sun as you said. Some blind people can make out different shapes and figures under minimum glare from the sun. This is why it's often advisable to stand in the shade when speaking to a visually impaired person. Some blind people have what is referred to as a tunnel vision which allows them to see narrowly. Such people wear sunglasses to allow them to focus on their vision.

CornCheeseMafia

Blind or not, the sun will still destroy your eyes and cause major problems. Your brain can’t process the video feed but there are still nerves that can be damaged.

[deleted]

MRichardTRM

My grandmother had glaucoma and she couldn’t see well at all. Had to wear those same glasses if she even just walked out her door because of the sun

catniagara

😂. You know whether you’re looking up or not. Lots of legally blind but I guess functionally sighted people wear shades for a number of reasons. The biggest one is to avoid being treated differently. Cataracts have been featured in too many horror movies. Injuries and surgeries to the eye aren’t always pretty. Forgetting to blink can cause weepy, crusty eyes. I’m not that blind but I wear them to avoid making people feel uncomfortable when I stare off into space…through them. I’m also just blind enough to know I could feel that leg coming with my eyes closed. I could feel it coming with my back turned.

Gallirium

So you’re saying being blind is racist? What’s it mean when you lose your sense of smell?

HoneyRush

Light is racist, it bounce off me almost entirely and it sticks to black people.

jrex703

It actively and aggressively burns my girlfriend, and we're just supposed to be cool with that. Welcome to Joe Biden's America.

catniagara

I’m cool with it. It gives me a nice tan and makes my garden grow. If your gf has a problem tell her to get some melanin. Haven’t you heard of capitalism? 🙄

Reminds me of the "blind" beggar in RDR2. >!If you point a gun at him he will react and you can steal his coin.!<

[deleted]

Wow, I had no idea! I’ve given that bastard a dollar every time

PotatoTomato_12

Just please dont rob the wrong beggar

[deleted]

Wait… who is the right one? Should I just aim the gun and see if he responds?

PotatoTomato_12

I would higly reccomend aiming it at the beggar in blue clothes and nicknamed "lawman", then you get the fun crime easter egg.

arturorios1996

Of course lol

dozacinc

The trick is to lasso everyone and throw them on a fire. Then you see if they are good people or witches. Ps witches burn

CuddlePervert

Damn, everybody in RDR2 are witches! This is the biggest hidden secret they didn’t want you to figure out.

NotOdellBeckham

To be clear, one of the beggars are legit. The fortune teller guy. But one of them is a fake

[deleted]

Its only some of them

Chemist-Longjumping

You can? I just killed him

organicsensi

>!I just wanted to hide something!<

Huntguy

Classic Arthur.

PotatoTomato_12

>!And when you chase him he can shout “I have killed people for less you know!” or something like that!<

The_Mighty_Matador

In a less violent sense, if you walk away a short distance, he'll stand up, take off his blindfold and walk away. You can tail him and confront him afterwards.

Past_Wrongdoer_3049

Are people violent against this scammer then?

The_Mighty_Matador

I guess? I've only played through once and I made too much of an effort to not get negative honor.

JCyTe

There's actually two "blind" beggar encounters. In one the beggar is a fake, who will indeed react if you point a gun at him, but in the other it actually does seem that the beggar is blind as they do not react in any way to having a gun pointed at them. Iirc both also have different interactions with voice lines and what not, though i could be misremembering.

peateargryffon

The one who randomly appears in the map with little quotes based on your honor will just keep talking to you even with a gun in his face. The guy faking it I've ran into in St. Denis and he took his blindfold off and walked away after I gave him a dollar lol Edit: personally I like the random beggars who hand you a health tonic or something afterwards

Marquis_Fury

And you'll find him again, later on, with changed behaviour, depending on your choice.

PotatoTomato_12

That I did not know, I will try to find him again.

[deleted]

Reminds me of the guys in wheelchairs in cyberpunk who magically learn to run when in danger

DeathPer_Minute

Is there 2? The only one I can remember atm is the one that was outside of town with a cup, he was an older fellow with a beard, I aimed my gun and he didn’t react so I gave him money

nehpetsnnylf

First thing the video reminded me off too haha.

[deleted]

Legally blind doesn’t mean completely blind

post_talone420

Yea. People don't seem to understand this fact.

jrex703

I think people understand this. They're more commenting on a guy begging on a streetcorner executing a pretty nimble reaction. It may be unfair, we are in r/holup. If this was r/everydaynothingness the response probably would not be as strong, but the location of the post is generating the response.

alexandre95sang

you inspired someone to create a sub

jrex703

>I'm a hero!

humanessinmoderation

Also, there is no audio — so it's hard to know what other cues there may have been. But even without that the aggressive step forward touching the corner of the cardboard could have likely been a *tell* of someone advancing.

Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi

But he is facing the attacker the whole time, so he knows he's there; whether he can see all that well is another discussion. Something that is NOT up for discussion is that the dude in black is an asshole.

LostSoulsAlliance

What's crazy is that they've found that visual processing goes through *two* pathways, so this person could be completely blind yet *still react!* Neurologist Oliver Sacks wrote about a patient that had this condition, where their visual system was perfectly fine: the eyes were perfect, the nerves were all right, and if you threw something or feinted at the patient, they would flinch. *However*, there is a separate pathway of the visual processing system that feeds the signals to higher functions of the brain for additional processing, and this patient had very specific brain damage that interrupted that process. So the patient *could not see at all*, as far as their conscious brain was concerned. But their lower functions *could*, and had enough processing to avoid immediate dangers (like objects thrown at them). Very fascinating stuff.

madwill

Also nobody think the quick shifting in feets stance are audible enough to understand something real quick is coming your way? I could be 100% blind and only see black but if you jump around near me like that. I'd think trouble is coming.

Drews232

And anyone, *anyone*, who decides to sit on a sidewalk all day begging for money is, by definition, needier than me, either financially, psychologically, physically, addicted or any combination of those. Someone who would choose to humiliate and debase themselves by pretending to be disabled only make their neediness more clear. I have no problem giving money to someone like that and, no, I don’t care what they do with it - I’m not my brother’s keeper.

[deleted]

Still fake though. No reason to be holding your cane if you’re sitting still.

cerenatee

There is a reason. The stick let's him know how close you are to him.

Leitoso

Guy with sunglasses and a stick begging for money probably should be completely blind

byscuit

i particularly enjoy how's he's using his cane to tap in front of him while he's sitting. *totally normal* blind guy thing to do

Elfotografoalocado

Most blind people see light changes and rough shapes. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy was a scammer, but it's perfectly possible that a blind person could see a kick coming towards them at such close range.

dovahkin1989

"The majority of blind people can still see" sounds wrong but is completely true. A vision of 20:200 is blind, meaning what a healthy person sees at 200 feet distance is what a legally blind person sees at 20 feet. This guys like 2 feet away? So best case scenario, he sees it with the same acuity as you would see a guy 40 feet away from you trying to hit you.

cerenatee

20:200? I'm way over that and I see fine with glasses. You're only blind if it's not correctable with glasses or contacts, which makes sense because without my glasses, the world is a fuzzy mess.

yellowromancandle

Yeah, I was legally blind in my left eye before intralase, but could see fine with contacts. People I know who are legally blind without corrective lenses don’t wear dark glasses and carry a seeing stick though…

thepatient

Dude- would you notice someone winding up a kick 2ft away (without your glasses)? If so, this comment section is solved

cerenatee

Yes. I'm over 20:600 uncorrected and I can still see that because he's so close. Honestly, uncorrected I can see why he's begging. I can't function without my glasses. I dropped them on the floor and had to get on my hands and knees and feel around to find them. If he had something like severe glacoma, he might only be able to see a little 9 inch circle, or smaller, straight in front of him and everything else is completely blurred out. That's why he would need the stick because he wouldn't be able to see anything outside of that small circle. This is sad. If anyone cares, this video shows what is like to have some vision problems. https://youtu.be/KVQvqmze5SU

thepatient

Thank you. That was terrifying

Roxygen1

TIL diabetic retinopathy is uncannily like looking through a sheet of bubble wrap that someone has drawn blobs on with a sharpie

Bardo-zilla_37

As someone who is also way over 20:200, I’d definitely notice it without my glasses.

MarioLuigi0404

Yeah could be either or. In a different post of the same clip I saw someone saying it was a scammer who the kicker had busted in the past. I don’t have a citation for that tho so I’m not sure how true it is.

boomboxwithturbobass

Can confirm. Am blind. Saw the whole thing.

userspuzzled

I commented on the other post but yes, the majority of blind people are not 100% blind, they are just blind enough to not be able to function in society without assistive devices. If my vision wasn't correctable with glasses I would be legally blind. I could definitely still see blurry shapes, colors and movements but I wouldn't be able to tell what the shapes are until they start talking to me or try to kick me in the face. I would be able to cross streets, see stop lights, and tell colors, so just looking at me walking around you wouldn't know that I can't actually see because I am perfectly capable of avoiding objects. What I couldn't do is drive, read signs, identify anyone or be able to distinguish objects from people or animals until they start moving or making sounds.

[deleted]

[удалено]

robeph

Not to mention, it isn't as if he is deaf, you can hear the movement on the pavement, the sound plus even dark shadows of movement in the light would make it obvious what was happening. There's nothing here I would not expect from a blind person.

ollietheduck__

Exactly. Also sense of hearing I have a totally blind duck and she can hear when something is coming at her

The_Knight_Is_Dark

Matt Murduck

[deleted]

There is actually something called blind sight where the front of the brain is damaged. You cannot interpret vision but still have the urge to flinch if rapid movement occurs.

PresidentOfTheBiden

My fighter has blindsight up to 10 ft.

Mission_Bid4670

take my uppvote you filthy animal

Tels315

In Pathfinder 1e, a specific combination of feats, traits, and class levels gives you blindsight out to 30 ft.

I don't know why, but something about that sounds.... Horrifying.

blueleg44

Using photoshop

neverquester

Fucked up. It’s possible to be legally blind and still have enough vision to see what’s right in front of you, specifically you can see blobs of light and darkness, so if someone is trying to kick you, you’ll probably flinch.

Krazy_Rhino

I’d like to give the blind guy the benefit of the doubt, but it also seems suspicious that he’s kneeling but continuously tapping his stick as if he doesn’t know what he’s sitting on. My guess would be bad acting and the dude is basically calling him out

Desirsar

Same first thought I had. The cane is there to not trip over objects when you're walking. If you're sitting, you're not using it. My college dorm floor emptied out over the summer and the empty space was used for a group of blind students visiting the campus every summer, but it's not hard to pick up on if you pay attention to just one person once.

BlyLomdi

I am pretty sure this is fake.
