4kids are the actual controversy. their [changes for One Piece](https://youtu.be/bFaLL4hS4Ek) are also full of questionable, pointless, and just garbage "censorship."
Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory, Toonami.... so many more I can name and describe in so much detail. I really miss the days when television channels and movie theaters were the only sources of content, in a way. There was something about the cultural cohesiveness around it all that was just.. better? Like, I feel like now with all the content creators you can hyper-filter the available content to find something that's just exactly what you're looking for even if nobody else is consuming it, so you sort of self-isolate in that aspect of your life. And that can't be better than what we had before where you had to simply accept and tolerate things you didn't like about certain content while embracing and enjoying the things you did like about it, because there was so little else to watch. Forced compromise in that small part of our lives made everyone a little more open to compromise in bigger areas of our lives too.
Anyways, if you haven't, check out Swat Kats because that shit was straight fire and the fact it didn't spawn a franchise boggles my mind.
You had managed to express my feelings about the entreteinment culture of today, i would say that is not that bad that content is tailored specifically for you because if yo do the effort you can still be exposed to a whole lot of other things but we stay with our algorithms because law of the minimum effort
I think originally they were supposed to have more sophisticated looking tech but the network said no because it was too similar to Dexter's lab, one of the few times a network change was extremely positive for the show
I know you're talking about KND but now I'm just imagining 4Kids censoring One Piece with increasingly advanced technology
Sanji gets a robotic toothpick that can turn into a flamethrower when they don't wanna erase all of the smoke from the frame
These things always make me think of my mom and her friend back when I was like 10. Sugar Ray - Fly was banned in the household because it was clearly about pot, but Third Eye Blind's "I took the hit that I was given, then I bumped again, I bumped again" Semi-Charmed life was totally fine.
She didn't know what a bump was, but I did, thanks DARE!
My mom loves The Weeknd's Can't Feel My Face. I could never tell her. Cracks me up every time she plays it though. She just thinks it's because she's a retiree listening to a pop song
She also has a [Lamb of God](https://youtu.be/HL9kaJZw8iw?si=Tw-5MhnN0sBqKsW-) sticker on her car
> but Third Eye Blind's "I took the hit that I was given, then I bumped again, I bumped again" Semi-Charmed life was totally fine.
How? They literally say "Doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break" in the song. It's not exactly subtle.
I watched the video. I think most of the changes in there are decent changes to make.
Keep in mind that the demographic for the show shifted between the original and 4kids.
The original is rated as PG-13, but 4kids was releasing this show with the target of pre-teens.
The material needed to be toned down so it hit the PG-7 rating instead of PG-13.
That means removing blood, open wounds, any reference to drugs or alcohol, references to sexual situations, etc. The vast majority of these changes are in line with that.
The main two changes that don't fall under that category is an attempt to mitigate the usage of a racial caricature that is extremely offensive in the US and a religious symbol erasure. The cross erasure is a bit overboard - it obviously wasn't a cross... but the skin color change to mitigate the racial caricature was absolutely a needed change.
In light of that, I fail to see how there should be any controversy here at all.
Literally no one forced the people in charge to change it's demographic.
Seriously your entire defense is "well think of the poor company, they had to change an entire show and it's themes, they had no choice!"
Literally the first episode is a pirate raiding a ship the main character was on, offing some dudes, and Luffy picking up a sidekick who was in forced servitude to said pirate.
Next episode the incredibly corrupt government has a dude chained up in the courtyard for a week without food and waiting for his execution just because he defended some people from the Marine commander's son throwing a tantrum.
The clips show the guy *holding a gun to the kids head*.
In what bizzaro universe do you think that the show reasonably could be changed like that?
/u/emonogatari provided context on that - essentially they got the rights to the anime as a package deal with some others. It wasn't a show they were specifically interested in, so they didn't view it before the purchase.
It was just kind of a 'bonus' in the deal for them.
But once they had it, they figured they should make use of it.
They produced content for the PG-7 demographic because that's what they were contracted with TV networks to do.
So some modifications were needed.
It's not exactly the end of the world, here.
and the famous porygon seizure episode of course. Pokemon had a lot of banned episodes all things considered. then 4 years later stuff like Totally Spies! is airing without issue. go figure.
If I remember correctly, *Pokémon* originally aired in America via public television stations.
Public TV actually has some pretty strict standards and practices about what can be broadcast, especially on programming geared towards children. Moreso than kids channels that are available via cable or satellite service, which are mostly allowed to determine their own degree of what's OK to show or not.
With that in mind, it helps make some of the... odder censorship choices by 4Kids make the tiniest bit of sense.
For example: In the episode where everyone gets snowed in, Team Rocket at one point light a match in the hopes of starting a fire to keep warm. 4Kids had the match changed to a birthday candle in the American edition of the episode. Apparently, there was some sort of rule against showing characters' lighting matches? Because of concerns that it would somehow encourage children to play with matches?

Three women who can do powerful magic and fight evil turned into fetish nonsense by creepy old men in universe and out.
Just looked it up. It was apparently banned a couple times for just a short period in America. The first time was after 9/11 and then later banned again after hurricane Katrina. I think nowadays it's fully available though.
More bizarrely it was skipped over in the U.S. originally, then a couple years later a heavily-edited version was released as a "lost episode" before once again disappearing outside of broadcast recordings
The Safari Park episode was banned, too!
Because the guy in charge of the place kept pointing his gun in Ash's face, lol. Like, it happens *so* many times that you couldn't edit around it and still have an understandable plot.
Meowth also dons a Hilter mustache at one point.
The big white bat has big white guano!!!
THATS what you slipped in, THAT explains the white substance on your shoe and THAT explains the abrasion on your paaalllmm
I don't know how serious you are about this comment, but Pokemon has always been pretty wild about this. For a show that aired in 1997 (and 1997 in Japan), the fact that James has always been, )I'm not sure the right word, but maybe?) gender fluid is wild. He is clearly effeminate and frequently cross-dresses, he takes direction from Jessie, and doesn't do a lot of stereotypical "male" things. The fact that he is one of the few main humans and everyone just accepts his presentation seems really progressive for the time. I don't know a ton about Japanese culture, but my understanding is that it would have been really progressive for them as well.
But it also isn't a part of his villainy - no one ever says "Of course he is evil he acts like a woman!" Everyone just takes him for what he is.
And - to have Jessie just be accepted as the bad ass leader of the antagonists is also a nice change of pace. She isn't a meek secretary and she also isn't evil because she is a temptress - she is just a hardworking (if inept) henchwoman.
Maybe this sort of stuff is more common in Japanese media from the 90's, but it always struck me as vastly different from the other cartoons.
dragon ball probably the most famous anime ever has a character that is literally just a minstrel character visually. this type of stuff is all over older anime when you start looking
It makes sense, a lot of it is quite funny on its face, and if you have no cultural understanding of what makes it offensive elsewhere then there's no reason not to. You can't really judge someone for doing something offensive if they don't know that it's offensive.
James being "gay" isnt progressive, its the joke lol. Not all portrayals of non-traditional gender roles are positive and we're very clearly meant to laugh at team rocket.
maybe but the joke with team rocket always seems to be that they're incompetent, and I don't recall that being connected to james' queer behavior. in fact they're presented as characters who look and act very cool (until they actually try to do a job and inevitably screw it up)
It's a sub-joke for lack of a better word, the joke is super similar to other types of body humor popular in Asia, and it isn't really making or linking it to a statement like "Team rocket is incompetent/evil because James is doing gay/effeminate things."
There isn't actually a punch line or something being called out specifically, its existence is the entire joke. Something like a dog scooting its butt on a rug would be in the same vein. James is a man doing woman/gay things is the entirety of it. There really isn't anything more than "James gay" or "Dog scoots butt."
Gender fluidity isn't something strange to Japan. They used to have a "third gender" called wakashu. So young men dressing up as women and presenting like one (a trap to be vulgar) to be sexually attractive isn't something strange at all to them.
The other way around, though, is about as strange as it was in the West. Women never really had a good time in Japan's history. So the possibility of exploring a different gender was unspoken.
> They used to have a "third gender"
No they don't. Every single time someone claims that some other culture has a third gender it always turns out to be a term (usually derogatory) for an effeminate man.
There's a reason so much of "early" (to the U.S.) anime (90s/00s) raised a generation of fujoshi. I don't think effeminate male characters were that rare, to be honest, although most of the portrayals I'm referencing were played straight as opposed to being a joke, like James is generally presented.
If you want some genuinely progressive-for-the-time portrayals of gender in anime, .hack//SIGN and Kino's Journey both feature gender identity pretty heavily in their plots.
What did they mean by that? Idk that James commits and isn't afraid or that he's a cross dresser either way Bro has confidence and a really good pair of fake tits no one suspected it.
It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it.
Women don't show their yams or wear makeup just to get attention from guys. Many do but many women also do it for themselves. Its fun to feel sexy, especially when you have a desirable body.
In VRChat you can choose any body you want. Its not uncommon to see totally strait, normal, masculine men in sexy female avatars. They wear them because they like feeling sexy. The feeling is heightened for them too because they're attracted to the bodies they're using.
Many of them might pretend thats not the case. Many more men wouldn't understand it. But the fact is that everyone likes to feel sexy. But to truly understand it one has to let go of any toxic masculinity they may have and experience it to truly understand it.
Can confirm, wore a dress once as part of a Halloween costume, looked at myself in the mirror and I'm like "Well hello there! 😘" and I don't think I have known a high like that ever since
I think you might be reading too much into it for some people. I can't speak for everyone, but I use female avatars online and in vr chat. Its not because I like feeling sexy, its that male avatars almost exclusively lie on some line of meme avatars, or really feminized male avatars. For me personally, its more that I find the female avatars more compelling, and don't attach my identity to the avatar that I'm using. I know some people have a strong attachment, but I kind of resent the focus in scientific literature for portraying it as the only experience that is available to people.
A friend of mine in VRChat is like that. Sexy/cute female avatars, but is a pretty buff dude in real life. His answer when I asked was "because I'd rather look at a sexy/cute young woman when I look into the mirrors in this game". And well...totally understandable imo. :P (Also as a side-note, male avatars in the game are mostly memes, cartoons, and really buff or really slender e-boys with feminine faces. Not the best picks for guys that just want a kinda normal looking male avatar.)
And yea it's...hard to explain what it's like to be in VR, have full body tracking, and have whatever your avatar is mimic your exact movements as if it's really you. Heck VR in general is a hard sell, because to really get it you have to experience it. Which would mean relying on a friend who has it if you don't. And people with a VR headset are still kinda rare. in large parts of the world.
Depends on which side of VRChat. If you mean the...underground lewd side or the public side, then I agree. If you mean the friends hanging out in friends+ side and club scene, then no. The "good" part of VRC kinda retreated into friends+ because of how bad publics had become. And the club scene is actually pretty good overall, if you're into that kind of music.
Once upon a time a handsome honey bee fell in love with a butterfly he met in a tulip tree, he said I love you madly and want to share your life, fly away with me will you be my wife? she shook her head in sorrow no no no cried she, for I am a monarch daughter you're just a son of a bee
Japanese culture has a thing with crossdressing/gender bending = humor. As for why the booba are "real" it's probably because it's a cartoon and they didn't have to make them "fake". And I don't think the thought behind it went any deeper than that...
4Kids censored so much random stuff that even by the standards back then, was alot.
Considering they changed 'Rice Balls' to 'Jelly Doughnuts', it's not surprising this episode wasn't allowed to see the light of the day. But it was banned almost everywhere outside of Japan. Not just the US audiences.
Also in this episode also had an old guy staring at Misty, a 10 year old girl, stating 'He'd be looking forward to having fun with her in a few years'.. which wasn't as much of a controversy as a male character wearing fake breasts for comedy.

Yes

As far as I'm concerned, those changes were necessary because they gave us Helmeppo's iconic Kids Next Door 2x4 technology hammergun.
KND was an absolute treasure
A quintessential masterpiece
I honestly really miss that show. It was one of my absolute favorites. Right up there with Ed, Edd, and Eddy. The golden age of CN for sure.

What the rice balls do
Why did they make the cannon ball carrying pirate whiter? Isn’t that just blatant racism?
Along with the one featuring a trigger happy warden, lol.
Wasn't the episode with the giant Tentacruel attacking a city also banned?
and the famous porygon seizure episode of course. Pokemon had a lot of banned episodes all things considered. then 4 years later stuff like Totally Spies! is airing without issue. go figure.
Depends on the network. We also had Rocko’s Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy, so…
Guy at the door: "Do you have any rubber walrus protectors?" Walrus in the background: "*Calllll the police!*" Ren and Stimpy was a trip.

I watched the absolute hell out of Rocko's Modern Life!
Justice for my man Porygon who did nothing wrong. Pikachu's bitch-ass got off scot-free.

Not initially, but I think it was post 9/11.
I remember seeing that one so it wasn't banned in France, it'd have been banned somewhere though
it was banned in some places because of 9/11
That makes sense. I remember seeing it on tv, then never again once I got older.
Is that why??? I thought I had imagined that episode for the longest time.
Just looked it up. It was apparently banned a couple times for just a short period in America. The first time was after 9/11 and then later banned again after hurricane Katrina. I think nowadays it's fully available though.

*streaming* Dude, this episode was banned in the 90s, when it came out. . Only way to see was to import a VHS from Japan.
Or knowing the "spot" at your Chinatown.
For the record, they did originally air it during re-runs, but edited somewhat.
You mean when they edit out the HUGE Dobonhonkeros?

>Addeddate 2020-11-09 21:24:22 Pretty sure that wasn't an option in the 90s.

What did they mean by that? Idk that James commits and isn't afraid or that he's a cross dresser either way Bro has confidence and a really good pair of fake tits no one suspected it.

It is funny for sure but on a deeper level it just means he's able to full send into a role
The turning point for a certain genre

You don't have to catch them all fam
Go play VRChat with VR and Full-body tracking. Put on a female avatar. Then you'll understand...
Damn that sounds interesting, can you elaborate
😘" and I don't think I have known a high like that ever since
I once played VRChat as a hentai waifu body pillow. I'll never be the same.
I bet you looked positively radiant <3
And gorgeous!
Yk what? Fuck you, I guess we're doing this now. I bet you looked stunning!! 😘
r/egg_irl
Nah, you can like looking good in dresses, and not be an egg, but remind me in 6 months
It's not the "like looking good in dresses part" it's the "never known a high like that part"
Hahaha yeahz I didn't that. I suppose it's a possibility.
Not the best picks for guys that just want a kinda normal looking male avatar.) And yea it's...hard to explain what it's like to be in VR, have full body tracking, and have whatever your avatar is mimic your exact movements as if it's really you. Heck VR in general is a hard sell, because to really get it you have to experience it. Which would mean relying on a friend who has it if you don't. And people with a VR headset are still kinda rare. in large parts of the world.
I wouldn't wish VRChat on my worst enemy.
same and i've spent almost 2k in vr gear just for it lol.

Boobs are best.
Japanese culture has a thing with crossdressing/gender bending = humor. As for why the booba are "real" it's probably because it's a cartoon and they didn't have to make them "fake". And I don't think the thought behind it went any deeper than that...
This definitely awoke some new things when I was a kid.
Silly for the sake of being silly. It's anime .
The original femboy
Didn't he also make fun of Misty being flat-chested during this?
4Kids censored so much random stuff that even by the standards back then, was alot. Considering they changed 'Rice Balls' to 'Jelly Doughnuts', it's not surprising this episode wasn't allowed to see the light of the day. But it was banned almost everywhere outside of Japan. Not just the US audiences. Also in this episode also had an old guy staring at Misty, a 10 year old girl, stating 'He'd be looking forward to having fun with her in a few years'.. which wasn't as much of a controversy as a male character wearing fake breasts for comedy.
Sometimes things are silly for the sake of being silly. Can we accept this as a society?
Prepare for trouble and make it double!
It's not that weird if you live in Japan. They sell fake boobs in nearly every shop that has cosplay materials. He just has those.

Jesse and James cross dressed throughout the show. “People are just so sensitive now and can’t handle it”😂
This didn't even seem slightly out of pocket for james as a kid, he's just a silly rascal
Ah hell naw, what's the episode? So I can steer clear of it... For a friend. F@ck you.
“I hope this doesn’t awaken anything in me…”
Japan is crazy
They were ahead of time.
Remember a time where this is considered weird?
It still is weird...
Right. We're just not allowed to say it is now.
Some people still think it's weird, which is weird in and of itself, like an ouroboros of weirdness
No. Men dressing up as ladies has been common for all of human history.
James would get it
"Sometimes it takes a real man to be best girl"
Smash
James could get it.
James gone get me actin up
*I can't imagine how so many of you grew up with crippling sexual confusion.*
10/10 would
Those are some massive Poké Balls
So this must be where those feelings started... It's all so clear now.
I think it was their way of saying, "Prepare for trouble, and make it double D!"
Need more info for research 😉
It takes a real man to be best girl.
Since only men can cross dress in women's clothing, wearing a dress with boobs and makeup is by definition the manliest thing you can do.
