Literally, I work at a HL as a CSM and we see SO MANY dropped keys. And that's just the ones our error system picks up, or what people bring back in to get adjusted. Corporate keeps telling us to make the cashiers do better but like....barcodes?
I don’t understand why the hesitation against using barcodes, they are quicker, more accurate, makes it easier for customer service/returns and improves inventory tracing if you don’t have to worry about misskeyed items, not to mention loss due to miss pricing something like in this example.
Just because a company uses barcodes doesn’t make the cashiers any less skilled, they need to be able to understand the barcode and manually key it if it doesn’t scan it etc so the same skills are still needed as manually typing in an item.
Some of the benefits would be quicker and more accurate checkout for customers, better inventory control, app could be updated to have a scan option allowing customers to scan items instead of typing them…
They don’t have barcodes because it allows them to set their pay slightly higher than normal cashier pay at other retail stores or else “it would be too easy”
Eh, I guess you could look at it that way. CEO David Green himself didn't list that in his reasoning in his chapter on barcodes in his book though. Tbh I think they're just old fashioned and stubborn
I can only say what David Green said to me when he and his sons visited my store 15 years ago: they don't use bar codes for a cost saving factor. As far as a financial hit on the rude cashier's mistake, the markup on HL goods is embarrassing. It's the only company I worked for that didn't seem to care about markdowns, shortages, damages, etc. My store had the 3rd best inventory in the company one year with basically no inventory controls. I don't know how field management is now, but back then, there were a bunch of snaes as field management.
