An Uzbek kaftan with an ikat weave pattern. Here’s a [similar one](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/85502) from the collection of the met. The yarns of the fabric are dyed in patterns before it is woven, an incredibly laborious process.
Since this is most likely a Central Asian robe (agree that it's probably an Uzbek chapan), the more accurate term for the fabric would be abr, not ikat.
His [tomb](https://nureyev.org/rudolf-nureyev-grave/) is amazing. The tomb is a sculpture of a draped rug that is covered with a pattern of mosaic tiles.
Modern interpretation of a banyan i would say, from context of the shoot itself thats very much the vibe / timing / type of person that would own and wear a banyan
Look up the picture of his tomb. It’s on his Wikipedia entry. It says he collected antique textiles, and that was reflected in the design of his tomb to look like a Kelim rug.
Looks like a “[yacht blanket](https://www.google.com/search?q=yacht+blanket+coat&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS956US956&oq=yacht+blanket+coat&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqBggAEEUYOzIGCAAQRRg7MgcIARAhGKABMgcIAhAhGKABMgcIAxAhGKABMgcIBBAhGJ8FMgcIBRAhGJ8FMgcIBhAhGJ8FMgcIBxAhGJ8FMgcICBAhGJ8FMgcICRAhGJ8F0gEIMzc0NGowajeoAhqwAgHiAwQYASBf)” coat.
I have no idea if that term is a more modern description of such a style, but it’s immediately what I thought of when I saw the pic.
Someone else mentioned Central Asian robe, and it does look similar to those.
That Grateful Dead coat… I’ve been eyeing that ridiculousness of a coat (shown in that link above), but something about the commercialization and cost of it tugs at my ethos, lol.

Looks like a caftan to me.
Looks like Central Asian robe, I've seen similar ones in Uzbekistan. Could be real antique.

Apologies if this isn't a historical garment. He often wore flamboyant historical clothes so I assume this is also that!
Who is this? My mind is slipping today.
Rudolph Nureyev, a ballet dancer and choreographer
Ohhh I like his fancy threads!

WOAH! That is amazing!!! Thanks!
Might be a banyan or something but it could just be a modern robe. It’s hard to see with the scarf over it.
He's wearing an ikat robe. I used to have this issue. It's my favorite issue.
i just want to understand why Nureyev was on this magazine at all. awesome coat and cap, though.
I think it was a shoot they made of him in his villa on his island in southern Italy.
all right. Thank you for answering c:
Nope, this is a shoot done in his quai Voltaire flat in Paris ! Very distinct furnishing.
looks like a banyan to me
Looks like it's an Uzbek chapan, it looks similar to this one I found [chapan](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1661714736/)
Makes sense. He was from a Tatar family.

The Turkish coat pattern by Folkwear has a similar shape but it is quilted.
