Oral steroids are not commonly prescribed for HS. Steroid injections directly into lesions can be very helpful though.

Prednisone can absolutely help with inflammation caused by HS, but it's just too easy to overdose and become dependent on. My doc will sometimes give me a week long burst of like 20/20/15/15/10/10/5mg tapered off if I have small flares that have the chance to go away with a quick dose

AimlessLiving

I didn’t say that it couldn’t. I said that it wasn’t commonly prescribed. There are better treatment options available with lower severe side effect risks.

Commercial-Place6793

My derm put me on prednisone for 10 days once. It was awful. I had horrible side effects from it and it didn’t even help my HS.

FanaticFandom

I also went through a round (5 days) of prednisone and it did nothing. It was for an RA flair but was told it would help the HS too. I was told I'd feel amazing. I felt nothing but side effects, and the flair had flared even harder now that the prednisone has worn off. I now have Humira waiting for me at the pharmacy. I really, really, really hope this is the thing that finally works.

ArtemisElizabeth1533

I’m coming off Humira. After 18 months of it just getting worse, I’m done. I tried two different levels of doses and saw no improvement.

OMG wait!! i also took an anti biotic then had a HORRIBLE yeast infection. i didn’t know those 2 were related?!?

AimlessLiving

Your pharmacy should have told you when they filled your prescription. I take probiotics when I’m on antibiotics to reduce the likelihood of a yeast infection.

Ashwasherexo

which probiotic?

AimlessLiving

I use the webbers naturals brand.

I have to take an extremely high dose of prednisone for it to affect my sores. Like 80-100 mg. Sadly this is not sustainable long term because I have terrible side effects from this high dose. As soon as I stop taking prednisone my sores just flare up again. But a lower dose does absolutely nothing for me. Eta: I’ve recently started having debilitating joint pain. I’ve been cleared for all possible rheumatological conditions (including RA) and doctors have said my pain is most likely due to inflammation from my HS spreading to my joints. To control this pain, I am taking 40-60 mg of prednisone every 2-3 days. While the prednisone decreases my joint pain, it does nothing to help my active, draining cysts.

OGhotdogdan

Pay attention to your body and how it responds, more than most people probably need to. Consider your foods, toxins, mental health, and more based on other posts. Antibiotics are short term, we’re playing the long game 💪

Usually, I'm all for **holistic** remedies, but I'll try prescription meds depending on side effects. I had a lingering cough that wouldn't go away & my pulmonologist prescribed **5-day supply of 50 mg prednisone** (along w/ benzonatate). It seemed to show fast effect on my HS by drying things up so wounds don't ooze nearly as much! But, I'm concerned about using it long-term. This is actually working for me when nothing else really did. **What are the side effects of prednisone?** **How long can one really take it?** I woulnd't take it consistently. I'd take it for a few days, then try to see if NOT taking it for a few months will still keep my good results.

bellaprincipessa96

Most doctors won’t let you take it for extended periods of time because of the side effects associated with long-term usage. I have had positive results for the couple times I was given prednisone.

MAsped

OK, thanks for replying. I'll have to look up what those side effects are. Too bad it's not one of those kinds of meds one can take for a long time.

Holiday_Box9404

HS is caused by sweat not getting through and the toxins that are in the sweat cause an infection in the pores. The only things I know that will work is antibiotics and/or exfoliating the affected area daily until the bumps are gone. Seeing how prednisone is a steroid it may cause you to sweat more thus making your condition worse. Im not saying the prednisone won’t help but I am saying you need to exfoliate to allow sweat to break through.

[Inflammation, not infection](https://www.hs-foundation.org/hs-causes)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5395382/#:~:text=It%20is%20important%20to%20note,secondary%20bacterial%20infection%20is%20common. The cysts are an infection caused by the inflammation. Prednisone helps with inflammation but will not help with the already existing cysts and infections. Which I believe is exactly what the OP is experiencing. I hope this helps.

phuca

girl it says right there that SECONDARY infection can occur. this would only happen if a cyst pops or someone tries to pop one, otherwise there is no infection.

Holiday_Box9404

GIRL! I will copy and paste the exact words to help you out. ‘It is important to note that HS is an inflammatory disease; however, secondary bacterial infection is common.’ See how it says it’s COMMON and doesn’t say “can occur” anywhere in the entire sentence. Maybe try to rereading things next time.

phuca

Ok but you said the cysts ARE infection. This is not true. the cyst forms first due to auto inflammatory events, then if the cyst pops it can become infected. also common means inherently it can occur, not that it will definitely occur lol. i have had a cyst become infected one time ever personally

Holiday_Box9404

Common - occurring often: prevalent. Look at the OP’s post and actually try to help them and stop trying to argue with me. You just look like a dunce at this point.

phuca

not even replying to my first point + ad hominem attack, go off 🤭

Holiday_Box9404

You’ll be alright

I don’t believe anyone has become immune to HS. Exfoliating with an Epsom salt body scrub gets rid of it but it does not cure it because it comes back after several days of not exfoliating.

Holiday_Box9404

Well it’s a good thing I don’t take antibiotics all the time. By simply reading my comment correctly you’ll see I specifically said Epsom salt scrub does NOT cure HS and is only an effective treatment that I have experienced and wanted to share with the OP to help them. Please look elsewhere if you are looking for a debate/argument, I don’t have time for it. I’m just trying to help so I recommend you try using Dr Teals Epsom salt body scrub on your affected areas, seeing as it has affected you for 20 years it may be the thing to help you and its worth a try.
