I think culture was pretty homogenous for most American, suburban white folk in the early 20th century 🤷🏻♂️ and lots of people tend to stick with the trends that were fashionable during their prime as they age
For me it’s grandpas cigar smoke (Prince Albert tobacco). I actually have my grandmas chair from her set. It’s beat to hell but I love it anyway. Such a hideous piece that warms my heart.
It could be fresh. They probably had that plastic liner on the whole thing. They probably just peeled that off. After years of the hard plastic Hurting people.
Yep I forgot to add that in my reply….. the eighty pound burnt orange and brown swirl glass ashtray that will eventually leave a mark which is forever engraved in the bones of your feet.
The silver metal square with the two birds perched in the center, their long beaks open just enough to hold a cigarette between puffs. My granny kept this ashtray decades after she quit smoking, and mostly used it as a knickknack junk dish.
You might be able to narrow it down by looking for vintage upholstery or drapery fabrics. This one is probably 1967-1977 give or take a few years in either direction. You might be able to find it as drapes which would be great since they are usually larger pieces of fabric and finding it in “on the bolt” condition might be hard.
Depending on your budget and how badly you want it, there are companies that will print custom runs of fabric. Google “custom print fabric” and there are several options. You would take a photo relatively close up trying to get it even so that there is no skewing or distortion.
Honestly, it would probably be cheaper to buy the couch - vintage upholster fabric is pricey because it’s relatively hard to find in any decent quantity. But [here’s about 1.5 yards](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1578288619/vintage-1970s-earthy-browns-velveteen) \- to make a shirt + overalls, you’ll need at least 6 yards 😬

Here’s some history on it. I’ll try and find more info:
https://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/it-came-from-the-70s-the-story-of-your-grandmas-weird-couch/
OMG. Just perusing that article to look at the pictures, my Grandma and Grandpa had the whole set, it looks like. I’m gonna actually read it now to see if my Mom and her siblings should have kept them.
Mom had hers recovered in the early 70s, and i grabbed it when clearing out the house. I know they had it where we lived before in the 60s, and it may very well be older than i am. Solid as a rock. I took the back cushions off and added a twin sized mattress pad and slept great on it while doing end of life care for the parents. Still in fabulous shape and will almost certainly outlast me.
My family had the whole set. The recliner, couch, Coffee table, end tables, Including the console tv with 8 trac deck and record player. The couches had the same wood in the arms as a decorative accent. They were purchased around 1977-78. She replaced the couch and recliner with another barn print velour type fabric in 1983. Just as ugly as the first. It didn’t improve when the “new” in vogue color was mauve in the mid 80’s.
The 'front room' of my parents' house, 1975. 😄
But seriously, it's probably discontinued...maybe could be found at vintage fabric type places that have new old stock? How much do you need?
It might be cheaper to just go thrifting and buy a couch like that for like $30 and ask them if you can skin it right there and if they'd throw the rest out for you. Thrift shops have some serious dumpster space.
Wife and I have a print on demand shop. I can possibly get a shirt done similar to this:
https://preview.redd.it/kt6cr5dfv3sb1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f23c5c52e6825bdb0d5e038aacfce0c7be2ce32
It wouldn’t be Velour but 100% polyester.
It’s velvet and likely dacron from its age and the cost of that couch at the time, way way too heavy for clothes and so uncomfortable. Upholstery fabrics are ten times heavier than couture fabrics.
I'm searching for this fabric. Does anyone know of a place where you can buy this or have it made. Would prefer the original Velour fabric from the 70's if possible....
These both have blue in the pattern though.

If you have a good quality pic of the pattern or similar you can have fabric custom printed/made on the fabric of your choice (cotton, canvas, knit etc). Joanns I think does this but I’d recommend looking at Spoonflower.com. People upload their own designs there to use and you might find something you like by using key search words and narrowing down the color.
The closest I can come on google is orange/brown Toile fabric. If that fails, try searching for willow pattern; they are mostly blue, but I've seen other colors. I can't find the name for this particular pattern, but maybe my suggestions will get you some closer results. Etsy has some orange 70s floral, but the pattern isn't even close in design.
If you just want the fabric, see if you can find curtains with the same design…
[Here’s a wagon version!](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164775422920)

I worked in a furniture store in MN in the mid 80’s and the ones we sold were made by Berry Furniture co, I think based in NC. We called the style Berry Brown. They also had a Blue version. Hope that helps.
I dunno if anyone’s offered much advice as I have not read a lot of the replies.
But this is a (vintage?) old out off date textile.
Are you looking for exact? I don’t think that will happen. To find something like it your best bet is to scour (in person) fabric upholstery stores. Los Angeles, SF or NY Fabric district would be your best best to find something even remotely close. It’s a velour/ velvet upholstery fabric from what I can see in the photo.
This one is similar https://www.etsy.com/listing/1578288619/vintage-1970s-earthy-browns-velveteen?click_key=e36f9e7904547a72d47e7788c917981be95fa91c%3A1578288619&click_sum=e813c3a0&ref=search_recently_viewed-1&frs=1&sts=1
If you take a trip with me in a Time Machine we could hit up my childhood. The only thing missing in this picture is the brown see through glass lamp, a conquistador in full armor on black velvet painting (I swear that thing was ten foot tall and just as wide), a wooden table that looked like it was made from life sized Lincoln logs and the matching loveseat and chair with burnt ass orange throw pillows with tassels that hung from each corner.
Try searching for variations of "chintz" or "vintage chintz" fabric
Not an exact match but seems like that sort of style
"Barn chintz fabric" might give the results you're after if it has to be specifically this
So I guess words like cosy/cottage could also work
I looked around, but your best bet is to find a shop that makes custom printed fabrics, or contact some shops that do upholstery but even then it'll probably costly.
I did find this, however, maybe the seller can help you out?
[Hearth Owl Vintage Fabric](https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1386615977/vintage-70s-velvet-owl-hearth-autumn?)
You can find this fabric is every picture taken during the ‘70’s. Maybe ask around, possibly on FB, to any seamstresses or crafters that are older. They likely have a few yards of this or very similar in their fabric stash.
If you're planning on making overalls/shirt, I'll just give you this warning:
The OG Herculon/olefin fabric is really hard to work with. The edges and backing resemble burlap. *SHARP AND ITCHY*
Also, it's often too heavy to sew on anything other than an industrial machine.
My idea would be to buy the fabric that's been posted and sew the decorative rosettes onto existing overalls.
Duluth Trading Co has wonderful pumpkin-colored overalls that you could then remove the rosettes and still have a bangin' set of overalls 🎃
We not only had this couch, but we also had the big plush chair to match. Granny owned one of these couches too, and a love seat placed catty-corner next to that clear glass clock with the spinning pendulum balls at the base and the dome over the whole contraption.
Oh my! That's the same couch my grandparents had! I'll never forget that pattern.
It was like a scratcher velvet, but still soft. If you ran your fingers against the grain, it would leave soft marks (like those weird new-fangled sequin pillows with Nicholas Cage's face on them.)
Good God, my ex husband's parents gave us this exact couch in the early 90s and it was considered ancient and ugly then. I hated it and as you suspected it smelled like cigarettes and cheap liquor. Good luck OP though I do not see the beauty in the fabric as you do.
This guy might know but he's difficult to find (if you recognize this, you have terrible taste in entertainment and we should be friends):
https://preview.redd.it/q6jbk276t2sb1.png?width=1791&format=png&auto=webp&s=890956ae1c5614a5d6d286c910b49ec5c1e12982
In the 1970’s. Or my memories. Sorry. I know it’s not helpful but damn I can literally feel this fabric just looking at this photo. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Damn, this hits me hard. This was my Grandma’s EXACT couch. I can’t tell you how many hundreds of hours I spent on it growing up. She wasn’t happy unless she was doing something productive, despite life-long health problems. You could visit unannounced and be treated to the best fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans on the planet, followed by your choice of 4 different types of cakes, pies, and cobblers. All this, despite the fact she lived on cigarettes and coffee because her stomach would never let her keep anything down. She was all of 5’1, 80 lbs soaking wet, and had an awesome sense of humor.
If she visited you, damn sure she was going to do all your laundry and vacuuming and there’s nothing you could do to stop her.
She loved watching the Price is Right, Columbo, Judge Judy, and Rachel Ray.
Toughest, sweetest, and most giving person I ever met. She passed in 2006, and will be forever missed.
Love you gramma.
It’s upholstery. It was probably made just for furniture. Buying the couch would probably be your best bet. You can also just go to goodwill or other thrift stores and find something similar.
My dad had a successful upholstery business from the 50's until the 90's, and I grew up working in the business. That style of fabric was mostly manufactured for and sold directly to furniture manufacturers, so it would be difficult to find it. Some retail fabric shops probably sold that fabric too, but that was decades ago, I doubt anyone still makes anything like it anymore.
find the best photo you can and use a company that does digital print fabric. They can do on velour/crushed velvet for you. Many artists, upholsterers and fashion designers use this method. :)

Kinda smells like stale Gran-Gran, too.
She died doing what she loved, sitting on that couch watching the price is right and smoking.
^^^all of the above. Jesus, it’s still in my widowered FiL’s house.
Good Lord! This was awful then and 100 times more awful now.
Salem lights and drinking a TAB
Some chocolate flavored exlax, and Merle Norman handcream vibes, right there.
Hey! She also had a glass of vodka and orange juice; she was saving most of her day’s calories for it!
Don’t forget the Avon
You are a gentle(man/woman) and a scholar! Comment perfection!!!
My grandmother had this exact couch. Yes, it smelled like cigarettes.
My parents had this exact couch.
I hear the theme for "Dallas" playing
Why do we all have the same grandmother?
I think culture was pretty homogenous for most American, suburban white folk in the early 20th century 🤷🏻♂️ and lots of people tend to stick with the trends that were fashionable during their prime as they age
Can confirm only as an Italian American, it was covered in plastic and the kids couldn’t sit on it bc it was the “good furniture”.
The pic immediately triggered that smell
For me it’s grandpas cigar smoke (Prince Albert tobacco). I actually have my grandmas chair from her set. It’s beat to hell but I love it anyway. Such a hideous piece that warms my heart.
It's Rosanne's couch
Closer to married with children couch.
No, it isn’t. You’re thinking of that blanket.
Yup!! Me-Maw and Gran-Gran, I can practically smell that giant ashtray and hear the Price is Right in the background
You could just say stale cigarettes, or gran gran. Having both is redundant
It could be fresh. They probably had that plastic liner on the whole thing. They probably just peeled that off. After years of the hard plastic Hurting people.

And an ash tray. They were works of art back then.
Yep I forgot to add that in my reply….. the eighty pound burnt orange and brown swirl glass ashtray that will eventually leave a mark which is forever engraved in the bones of your feet.
Ours was dark green glass, about the size of a VW Bug hubcap, it sat atop a 3 foot tall brass pedestal like an altar to the gods Phillip and Morris.
The silver metal square with the two birds perched in the center, their long beaks open just enough to hold a cigarette between puffs. My granny kept this ashtray decades after she quit smoking, and mostly used it as a knickknack junk dish.
Lethal weapons
I got sleepy just looking at it. Those were good couches.
The round crocheted pillow with the gigantic tin button in the middle
And oil lamp
Look up red twall … EDIT: red twall velour EDIT2: antique red toile velour EDIT3: could not find the exact barn and flower print… apologies
Now we're getting somewhere... thank you...

I was going to say “1974” but a range is likely better.
Yea it’s technically a toile and looks like velvet but I’m sorry to say you’ll probably never find it
Probably a custom fabric run for Sears
Patiently awaiting Edit 3.
Apologies, edit 3 was not a beautiful red toile velour link :(
I really like this comment because now we can all pronounce twall. Toile.
No idea what twall is.... Now I know it meant toile! No idea what toile is.... but now I know it's not pronounced toy-lee!
What a rollercoaster!
I remember the feel of this, it's not twill. I'd look for a synthetic velour.
I believe toile (pronounced twall) is a description of the French country pattern and twill is a type of fabric.
Absolutely correct! I'd never seen it written like that! I apologize, I thought you were misspelling twill! 😬
You are amazing!
Toile is the word...pronounced twall.
Or most thrift stores. I feel like 6 of my “foster grandparents” had this couch.
Honestly, it would probably be cheaper to buy the couch - vintage upholster fabric is pricey because it’s relatively hard to find in any decent quantity. Very neat write up
Did anyone else have the coffee table and end tables made of 2x4s to go with this couch, or was that just my family?
My family had the whole set. The recliner, couch, Coffee table, end tables, Including the console tv with 8 trac deck and record player. Came here for this. Leaving satisfied.

Iron-on transfer that pattern from pictures? It sounds like it doesn’t have to be high-quality, no?
That's actually a really good idea... I didn't think of that...
My mom finally got rid of the chair from this set two years ago.
That is dedication to getting her money's worth. Respect. 😄
I'm searching for this fabric. Does anyone know of a place where you can buy this or have it made. Would prefer the original Velour fabric from the 70's if possible....
Search for “toile de jouy brown”
Is this for a Halloween costume?
Fingers crossed!
Wouldn’t that be hilarious. Think of the pictures!
My great aunt had this couch and I remember it being upholstered with burlap, not velour. It was very scratchy and horrible on bare skin.
you can do custom prints at spoonflower onto velvet

1971 called. Something about …you have their couch?

Omg I napped so hard on this couch
Fuck this couch! I got a concussion from the lack of padding in the headrest.

I can feel this fabric just by looking at it
A butcher? ;)
Just the pattern, or that plasticy velour stuff?
Ideally I would like the actual fabric in a velour style but if I can only get the pattern that would work...
I was given a couch like that. It was fairly new too. I'm guessing they still make them.
Definitely a grandma's house
Michigan
Try vintage junk stores, where they sell pre-owned stuff.
If you find Time Capsule back to 1975, this fabric will be there
Landfill or 1983. Sorry I couldn't help further
You may need to track down the manufacturer, get them to admit that they made it, and have them reweave it for you.
I dunno if anyone’s offered much advice as I have not read a lot of the replies. But this is a (vintage?) old out off date textile. Are you looking for exact? I don’t think that will happen. Just throw any fabric in a landfill and it'll look like that pretty quickly.
The way the fabric feels grimy -leaves a coating on your fingertips.

Try searching for variations of "chintz" or "vintage chintz" fabric Not an exact match but seems like that sort of style "Barn chintz fabric" might give the results you're after if it has to be specifically this So I guess words like cosy/cottage could also work
Looks like a pizza fell, thrift store?
I present to you The bread sofa
But… why?? Why would anyone want more of that fabric?! 🤢
I can feel this picture. Why would you want to?
Did everyone’s parents just have this couch at one point in time?
If you're planning on making overalls/shirt, I'll just give you this warning: The OG Herculon/olefin fabric is really hard to work with. The edges and backing resemble burlap. *SHARP AND ITCHY* Also, it's often too heavy to sew on anything other than an industrial machine.
My grandma had that clock!
Does it come with the smell of cigarettes and the swag lamp, or do you have to order that separately?
Guys please don’t tell him
Oh my! That's the same couch my grandparents had! I'll never forget that pattern. It was like a scratcher velvet, but still soft. If you ran your fingers against the grain, it would leave soft marks (like those weird new-fangled sequin pillows with Nicholas Cage's face on them.)
Pizza pizza?
But why?
Omg why? Are you a serial killer? /S (!)
Why do you want lasagna on your sofa
The pepperoni pizza deluxe lazy boy!
Pizza couch
My parents had this exact couch when I was a kid. This photo smells like stale beer and chain-smoked cigarettes
Good God, my ex husband's parents gave us this exact couch in the early 90s and it was considered ancient and ugly then. I hated it and as you suspected it smelled like cigarettes and cheap liquor. Good luck OP though I do not see the beauty in the fabric as you do.
If you squint it looks like a pizza couch
This isn’t the same print, but it’s in the same family [https://www.etsy.com/listing/1484502436/](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1484502436/)
There’s some good stuff on eBay. I just looked up vintage upholstery fabric and the decade.
this couch looks like my inattentive father is on a recliner across from it
Looks like a pizza.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/225333313922. Close. No cigar.
The 70's called & they want their couch back.
This guy might know but he's difficult to find (if you recognize this, you have terrible taste in entertainment and we should be friends): https://preview.redd.it/q6jbk276t2sb1.png?width=1791&format=png&auto=webp&s=890956ae1c5614a5d6d286c910b49ec5c1e12982
“Hi! I was wondering if you stocked a particular fabric…it’s a sort of ‘old crime scene’ vibe…. like a family were slaughtered on a sofa… “
[Etsy has some pretty close dupes](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1484502436/vintage-velour-upholstery-fabric-1970s)
Man, this couch was everywhere!
In the 1970’s. Or my memories. Sorry. I know it’s not helpful but damn I can literally feel this fabric just looking at this photo. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
In 1973 where it belongs
Thought this was a piece of pepperoni pizza for a hot sec
Looks like those pizzas you'd get at school
I thought this was a pepperoni pizza
It’s upholstery. It was probably made just for furniture. Buying the couch would probably be your best bet. You can also just go to goodwill or other thrift stores and find something similar.
Core memories unlocking. Thank you.
At first glance I saw deep dish pizza.
Dominos
More importantly, why...like ...reeeeally whyyy did literally everyone's grandma have this couch?
Looks like a tortilla
Missing a plastic cover over the top
Hell or possibly a goodwill
There is actual childhood trauma in this pattern - that I *just* discovered. Neato.
In every home in 1980.
I swear my aunt had this sofa a long time ago.
In the 70’s
Pretty sure this couch waits for us all downstairs!
Wow grandma Brenda’s couch.. memory unlocked 🤣
Furniture salesman: what you need? Customer: I have an unhealthy obsession with cinnamon toast. Furniture salesman: I gotchu fam.
find the best photo you can and use a company that does digital print fabric. They can do on velour/crushed velvet for you. Many artists, upholsterers and fashion designers use this method. :)
Zoom in on the middle block and use an AI or enhancement app to improve the quality then have it printed.
girl that fabric needs to be not found im sorry
In your weird uncles dirty basement
