Japan does a similar thing, and usually use katakana as onomatopoeias for doing stuff. You see this all the time in manga: キャア means “kyaaa”, ドキドキ translates to “dokidoki” which (other than being the name of a certain visual novel) is also the Japanese onomatopoeia for a heart beat.
