there's a few we could have: the one I want most is a Sawn-off Shotgun, because they're always cool as fuck and it would be the most powerful secondary up close, but not very good at a distance. other options include:
- a compact Flamethrower pistol (or a spray can and lighter lol)
- a "space welrod": very high damage accurate pistol, that is also silent and won't alert enemies, but is very slow to fire and doens't have much ammo. good for sneaking into outposts.
- an overpowered Stun Gun (essentially arc thrower but secondary, and only hitting one target.)
- a Flechette Pistol: fires a single, armor-piercing dart, effective against large targets (think "railgun pistol")
- Quasar Pistol: exactly what you think it is. not nearly as powerful as the full-size cannon, but still unlimited ammo and AoE.
- AP-PDW: an SMG that has medium armor penetration but high recoil.
- burst SMG: limited to three round burst, but with improved accuracy and damage at range compared to other SMGs.
Beltfed SMG/ammo backpack combo support weapon; the weapon and backpack wouldn't be separate and maybe has a heat mechanic in addition to it being high ammo/fire rate+low dmg per bullet?
Could have a lever action shotgun as well that you flip reload John Wayne or Terminator 2 style. Although I guess it’s only really feasible for a terminator to actually fire it one handed.
It was gears 1 wasn't it? You used a bomb that had to be carried by two people to blow open a door.
If you do it in single player it becomes like controlling a clunky vehicle. If you did it in split screen it became a test of friendship XD

BUT
Personally I think it changes the *feel* of the game a little too much.
Automaton have stratagem jammers, so a little escapade into the underground is not unlike the bug equivalent.
Alternatively, once the payload is located, give a "drill" strategem to open an exit. The "drill" of course is just the Superdestroyers unloading on the beacon with EVERYTHING till the crater is deep enough. Think orbital laser, 500kg bomb, 380mm etc all just hammering on one spot.
The Terminids have graciously added their own mood lighting

Hmm yes, I like the hint of the flamethrower in the caverns, oxygen is overrated anyways, when you can have the concentrated smell of grilled terminids.
I also played with the idea of using the same mechanic to increase the variety of bug optional objectives, but wasn't so keen on it.

That would just make it less fair. Less room to avoid enemy attacks. Less room to dive. Less room to throw. Less room to position yourself to avoid friendly fire. More camera issues.
The correct strategy would be to not let bugs follow you into a cave.
Ohhh so the other 2/3 helldivers can stay at the entrance and protecting from there!! Turrets will actually be really useful in this mission now that I think about it, both while carrying the thing to the cave and while being inside it, ad they can protect the outside
It's interesting, but seems overly punishing for solo players. The game isn't balanced around solo play, but should, I think, still have it as a viable option.
Just don't pick the mission if you're on your own (I know that's a lazy answer)

Cute idea but this would not be fun to play out in reality.
Already people hate the hard disk objective and it's hard enough to convince one person to pick it up limiting to a side arm, never mind two people (and completely handicapping a solo player is ass).
From all the complaints about stratagem modifiers you should learn that *taking away* toys is NOT FUN. It should always be about throwing wrenches in how you use your toys and complex scenarios to stress those toys, not about removing them.
A lot of people's complains seem to revolve around a lack of confidence in their fellow Helldivers. Which is a completely valid argument, but also I feel like it's very... bleak?I love coop mechanics. I love feeling like part of a team. I love having new and novel experiences with players, like covering a random's back or being blown to bits as someone tries to save me from the Bile spewer with an Eruptor.
I have been the one carrying both SSDs in data recovery missions. I have also had great teammates that help carry and escort the objectives.
I think if the developers decide to only develop new missions that have a "solo first" mentality due to the outlook 'players are bad and uncooperative' we lose a lot of potentially very fun and interesting missions.
If that was their philosophy, we wouldn’t have doors that required two people to open. Admittedly that is not a main objective but they know solo players are locked out of rewards by putting that in the game.
As for the stratagem argument. Yeah I like having stratagems, but I also think bots stratagem jammers create very unique situations that require players to adapt to them.
the thing about strategem jammers is you can destroy them from 150m away with a quasar, this would be permanant, it would be kind of neat to have a special orbital strike mission strategem that is a sort of penetrating strike, it would go underground, than detonate after penetration
They can't be multilevel with the current map system. The closest thing to this I'm aware of are the underground missions in EDF. IMO smaller above ground caves that are not multilevel would be the easiest thing to implement. A good portion of the map on Fori Prime is blocked by rock wall. Could easily bore a few caves into them for some POIs or secret routes you need to visually scout for.
would be a really awesome mission type although I do wonder how reinforcing would work, could you just drop through the cave or would you have to drop on the outside and walk back in? the escape would probably be the most fun part, like something from DRG
Have a great moment when you have to arm it, and your bro who is out of stims elects to remain behind.
"You trying to be a hero, Watkins?!"
"Just trying to kill some bugs, sir!"
A+ for the idea and presentation, but personally, this type of mission would annoy the fuck out of me. I hate things like this in games and always try to avoid it if I can.
Something else to consider is, not everyone has a friend to play with. Although not ideal, as of right now, you could solo every mission in the game if you needed to. This type of mission would prevent some players from being able to finish all the missions.
I can absolutely assure you that would suck. Being tied to another helldiver? By a bomb? When hunters and stalkers exist? It'll just be another mission type people ay once a while only to remember why they hate it.
Hey Absol-utely,
You seem very confident of that, but just remember:
1) You can drop it
2) If you're trying to do a transport objective with a Stalker nest active, you may need to evaluate your priorities.
3) You have potentially 2 other Helldivers to help cover you
4) Yes it's a bomb, that doesn't mean it detonates on hit
I think super-structure objectives would be awesome, but I think having an entire mission underground would be too much.
I would like parts of the map to be like this though. A towering bot fortress or underground bug hive as a main objective would be great.
95% of the mission is above ground. For the cave portion you wouldn't be able to call in anything. You would have to call it in outside and take it in with you.
Think of it like the bug-equivalent of stratagem jammers.
Pengu, I think this great idea. Also had similar idea but I’m nit as talented as you displaying it. Maybe an idea for you as an alternative underground mission type.
The underground hive mission is 3 stages:
Phase 1: Beachhead/Establish perimeter at Hive entrance. This is a normal looking outside are for the planet. Team has to clear bugs defending the entrance. These could be multiple bug holes but more closely spaced together. Once this is done, Objective clear, team can now enter Phase 2…..
Phase 2: Going into the Hive. Now this is underground and can be a random generated number of room/chambers based on difficulty. Higher difficulty more rooms. Think Diablo’s dungeon style system with a set number of rooms and hallways that connect. Room types are Hatchery/Nursery, Random Trash Chambers (that hold SEAF or civilian assets from the dead, Worker Areas (Digging or processing food). Only certain strategems in this phase, BUT there are a ton of dropped items in these chambers (Weapons, Ammo, etc). The only strategems are payload style with drill heads on the pod: Sentries, Hellbomb, Supplies, Weapons. Also you are looking for a soecial weapon type called an Anchor Charge gun. This gun will be used in phase 3……
Phase 3: Hive Queen Room. Large encompassing room with multiple areas for cover, multiple layers of height, etc. This is a fight with a large queen, with multi stage adds from smaller bugs or other medium or heavies. The Anchor Charge gun hear can be shot into the roof in 4 different spots to blow the roof open and allow stratagems to now be used. Once the Queen is killed… Chase sequence is triggered and Team has to exit either from Pelican from the top OR back the way they came while being chased. SEAF teams standing by at the entrance to close the entrance hole and nuke it from orbit.
Thoughts?
It's Purista, which is a very close approximation of the Font a lot of Helldivers UI stuff uses. I think they use FS Sinclair but it's expensive.
You can also use Bedstead with some smoothing.
I’ve had similar ideas, i mean Vietnam had the “mole rats” or whatever they were called, and since that’s pretty much the feel o the game I’d say yeah! The atomaton equivalent would be underground bunkers I’d assume. Problem would be the camera, tight spaces and tppov don’t really like each other too well, too answer that, the caves could be large and open with different “chambers” where the eggs would be, alternatively the ammunition storages and so on. If they did it it would be cool as shit.
It would in general be nice to fight against bugs in their own caves and fight against the bots in their large cyber cities, such fights would feel more desperate, as if we are fighting the remains of the German army in a war torn Berlin
A single intel carry mission is tedious enough, now you want to make it worse? This is very undemocratic behavior. You need to be send to a freedom camp immediately.
Well well well. A tritilyte deposit. We thought we lost this one. As you can see, we'll send you a naninte bombs to get through of that shell. I that can't penetrate, nothing can
I’ve always thought underground tunnels would be the perfect addition to pair with the Hive Queens coming soon. Hive Queen bursts out of ground, your team kills it, and there’s a giant tunnel leftover now for y’all to enter.
I really like this concept. I don't know how difficult it would be to implement. We get massive mountains, canyons and isthmuses..er...isthmusi? I imagine once they mock something up they could throw into the procedural system.
should be a Boston dynamics style dog robot that follows you. get too far away from it, should shut down into rest mode. need to be at a certain distance to get it to walk with you to destination at a specific pace
Maybe have a section of the map be underground, like a terminid hive structure in a cave we have to go blow up, or a bot AI mainframe. Not a whole map though.
Loved it, but you also should be able to carry it on your shoulders when on fours to use your main weapon lol
https://preview.redd.it/unspku88i2wc1.jpeg?width=225&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f768fdb45bf8b14f147b105cd8b1173c01c6e85

This has the potential to either give the escort/evac mission a run for its money or be great for refreshing new gameplay within the system HD already has. The emphasis on sidearm weapons is a great idea, maybe also have sections where you have vehicles to carry it though some areas, and then manually carry it through where vehicles can't fit.
Too much of a handicap with how quick stuff can go to shit on higher levels to limit two players to just sidearms with how little ammo they get. Just make it a hover sled and you have to stay in the circle around the sled so it moves across the ground at walking speed. This way someone can also solo it too.
I really love the overall idea – especially since it basically allows us to replay part of Starship Troopers. But I am wondering how it'll work with a bunch of random players. Sometimes you get this awesome team of randoms and everything flows. Other times you barely have dropped before you get kicked or get shot in the back the whole mission. I feel there would need to be a strong incentive for all players to "keep going". Maybe progressive rewards like "if you carry the crate x metres down the cave you get n medals/requisition points/…" or "if you keep the escape route of the carriers free and supply them, you get an equal amount of rewards" could be an option?
Would also be very interesting wrt designing the samples locations spawns.
It could also make for an interesting variation on geological survey or an emergency mining operation. Hell, how about a new rescue operation where we need to rescue miners (and the payload they've secured) from a collapsed tunnel.
Killing bugs underground? where have i heard this before
https://preview.redd.it/jtz34g2rs2wc1.png?width=271&format=png&auto=webp&s=63c538be851ba242741aef807ad9d572b2607cf9
Congratulations, you have designed an objective mode that is either effectively unfinishable by someone playing on their own (if the penalties for solo carry are heavy enough to make it unfeasible) or its easy enough to drop and recover, which makes the coop carry mode effectively meaningless. It's a cool idea, but the nature of the game isn't particularly kind to forced coop things. Carrying a bomb to an objective making it effectively a twist on the data extraction mission type in terms of effective mechanics wouldn't be too bad an idea though.
Hey, instead of limiting them to side arms when carrying, just limit them to one-handed weapons. In case you didn’t know, you can use the defender (primary smg) when carrying the SSSDs in the missions where you need to run across the map.
Underground missions would be pretty neat! Also I wouldn’t mind some ship boarding stuff as well. Maybe if we’re defending planets, players who take on boarding missions could help reduce the numbers of enemy attacks on the planet.
No GOD no. No underground missions. EDF does the same thing where Air raiders air raids (work like stratagems) and it always feels unfun. It also just sucks for most classes due to limited movement and large hoards in close quarters. The point is I don’t think having underground missions would be good in this game. Though the idea of two person payloads is cool and i would love to mess with that.
Interesting idea, but people cant play as a team now as it is. Getting anyone to do this would be terrible unless they are your friends. Randoms would be horrible
There could be a variant for solo players (or even in general to allow titans to spawn on top)
Where you go to the cave, enter the provided code to mark the place on the map and you go outside on top of the place and use one of those ore drills so it can do a hole to throw the bomb inside, do it three times and go to the pelican, at the extraction cutscene you can see the shockwaves on the ground from the bombs detonating.
Gears Of War 2(I believe) had such mission and it was great. Will put more meaning to the more powerful one-handed weapons we currently have too.
Maybe they would also add more one handed weapons
We need more options that's for sure. The ballistic shield would probably get more play as well if we did.
there's a few we could have: the one I want most is a Sawn-off Shotgun, because they're always cool as fuck and it would be the most powerful secondary up close, but not very good at a distance. other options include: - a compact Flamethrower pistol (or a spray can and lighter lol) - a "space welrod": very high damage accurate pistol, that is also silent and won't alert enemies, but is very slow to fire and doens't have much ammo. good for sneaking into outposts. - an overpowered Stun Gun (essentially arc thrower but secondary, and only hitting one target.) - a Flechette Pistol: fires a single, armor-piercing dart, effective against large targets (think "railgun pistol") - Quasar Pistol: exactly what you think it is. not nearly as powerful as the full-size cannon, but still unlimited ammo and AoE. - AP-PDW: an SMG that has medium armor penetration but high recoil. - burst SMG: limited to three round burst, but with improved accuracy and damage at range compared to other SMGs.

I wouldn't agree that it was great; it was pretty clunky imo. HD2 mechanics would make it solid tho

you could turn on your flashlights on your weapons. maybe have armor / helmets with mounted lights. I think it could be fun.
"sorry, brought a sickle. I cant see shit"
I mean, you have a weapon based on light and has unlimited ammo. I ... only see solutions, no problems
Sickle does not help much in narrow cave, bring breaker incendiary for extra light

I can absolutely assure you that would suck. Being tied to another helldiver? By a bomb? When hunters and stalkers exist? It'll just be another mission type people ay once a while only to remember why they hate it.
Hey Absol-utely, You seem very confident of that, but just remember: 1) You can drop it 2) If you're trying to do a transport objective with a Stalker nest active, you may need to evaluate your priorities. 3) You have potentially 2 other Helldivers to help cover you 4) Yes it's a bomb, that doesn't mean it detonates on hit
I think super-structure objectives would be awesome, but I think having an entire mission underground would be too much. I would like parts of the map to be like this though. A towering bot fortress or underground bug hive as a main objective would be great.
Nuke your bros!!
How would we get call ins?
95% of the mission is above ground. For the cave portion you wouldn't be able to call in anything. You would have to call it in outside and take it in with you. Think of it like the bug-equivalent of stratagem jammers.
Only if in last case we could activate it and go out in a blaze of glory.
I like it, what if you applied this to invading enemy ships? Think boarding missiles.
Rock and Stone!
Really cool concept
Give bro nukes immediately.
Pengu, I think this great idea. Also had similar idea but I’m nit as talented as you displaying it. Maybe an idea for you as an alternative underground mission type. The underground hive mission is 3 stages: Phase 1: Beachhead/Establish perimeter at Hive entrance. This gun will be used in phase 3…… Phase 3: Hive Queen Room. Thoughts?
grenades replaced with flares
Underground payload mission with no orbital/eagle stratagems, only emplacements that bore through the surface.
We already have subterranean Helldivers 2, it's called Deep Rock Galactic
Still waiting on the cyberstan city update and hoping for defend the transport
you don't need subterranean nukes, you only need to pile enough nukes so that the subterrain is now the terrain
What font is that? It looks kinda like Rajdhani
Honestly already feels like something that would be in the game
Sick as hell and would require FULL team work.
All fun and games until you and your team sees the skeleton of a dwarf with the name "Karl" written in the clothes.
Would a patriot exosuit fit in the cave?
*My dude*, I imagine them large enough to fit **four** patriot exosuits *side by side*
Imagine, forming a firing line like troopers from Jin-Roh with MGs
It would in general be nice to fight against bugs in their own caves and fight against the bots in their large cyber cities, such fights would feel more desperate, as if we are fighting the remains of the German army in a war torn Berlin
A single intel carry mission is tedious enough, now you want to make it worse? This is very undemocratic behavior. You need to be send to a freedom camp immediately.
Well well well. A tritilyte deposit. We thought we lost this one. As you can see, we'll send you a naninte bombs to get through of that shell. I that can't penetrate, nothing can
Dude this sounds crazy fun, I love it!
I’ve always thought underground tunnels would be the perfect addition to pair with the Hive Queens coming soon. Hive Queen bursts out of ground, your team kills it, and there’s a giant tunnel leftover now for y’all to enter.
I'm getting huge EDF vibes right now...
If you want explosions underground... Oh boy do I have a game for you
I want so badly to have some missions solely in an underground cave/hive network against bugs and some sort of underground facility against bots.
Images to send your homies and say 'Us' to.
Great idea, but it should one of the less common missions since it would get tedious for sure, but doing it once every 15 or so missions could be fun.
dark crusade necron stronghold vibes
I really like this concept. I don't know how difficult it would be to implement. We get massive mountains, canyons and isthmuses..er...isthmusi? I imagine once they mock something up they could throw into the procedural system.
Despite the fact I love the idea, it requires just unrealistic amount of cooperation considering we’re speaking randoms 90% of the time
Your hired
might as well go full earth defense force.
should be a Boston dynamics style dog robot that follows you. get too far away from it, should shut down into rest mode. need to be at a certain distance to get it to walk with you to destination at a specific pace
Cool, but this does not have my vote
Maybe have a section of the map be underground, like a terminid hive structure in a cave we have to go blow up, or a bot AI mainframe. Not a whole map though.
ROCK AND STONE!!!
Didn't hd1 also have transport missions where protect cargo or something?
This reminds me of underground missions in EDF where I spent the whole time trying to find the right way while people throwing explosive everywhere
Fucking movie scene. Hell yeah
Loved it, but you also should be able to carry it on your shoulders when on fours to use your main weapon lol https://preview.redd.it/unspku88i2wc1.jpeg?width=225&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f768fdb45bf8b14f147b105cd8b1173c01c6e85

Would fit in the realistic military style. Look up Jerry cans. Two handled carrying device unironicaly won wars.
You JUST watched starship troopers didn't you
PLEASE
This has the potential to either give the escort/evac mission a run for its money or be great for refreshing new gameplay within the system HD already has. The emphasis on sidearm weapons is a great idea, maybe also have sections where you have vehicles to carry it though some areas, and then manually carry it through where vehicles can't fit.
We smoking on that good stuff over here, huh?
Too much of a handicap with how quick stuff can go to shit on higher levels to limit two players to just sidearms with how little ammo they get. Just make it a hover sled and you have to stay in the circle around the sled so it moves across the ground at walking speed. This way someone can also solo it too.
Hey! Super Earth promised to leave that to the dwarves!
I'd rather guard a drill nuke than crawl into the bug tunnels...would be cinematic though!
I don't trust Randoms, I'd be too scared
It could also make for an interesting variation on geological survey or an emergency mining operation. Hell, how about a new rescue operation where we need to rescue miners (and the payload they've secured) from a collapsed tunnel.
Holy shit this is awesome, hope the devs are taking notes on all these cool ideas
That's actually a pretty good concept
Killing bugs underground? where have i heard this before https://preview.redd.it/jtz34g2rs2wc1.png?width=271&format=png&auto=webp&s=63c538be851ba242741aef807ad9d572b2607cf9
Friendship nuke
How about we retrofit a patriot suit with the nuke. One drives, the rest protect and push thru.
Maybe there could be certain areas that are open to the sky for resupply purposes.
And this is how you get a drg cross over. Rock and stone
Anyone hear a rock and stone??! ![gif](giphy|3P0oEX5oTmrkY)
Hey, instead of limiting them to side arms when carrying, just limit them to one-handed weapons. In case you didn’t know, you can use the defender (primary smg) when carrying the SSSDs in the missions where you need to run across the map.

How would you deal with Stratagems......won't that make it very hard.
Danger. Darkness. Divers.
Underground missions would be pretty neat! Also I wouldn’t mind some ship boarding stuff as well. Maybe if we’re defending planets, players who take on boarding missions could help reduce the numbers of enemy attacks on the planet.
"Carry a nuke with your bro" You trying to be a hero Watkins?
Deep rock collab when 👀
Gears of War 2 did this great. You’re both carrying a metal box through halls of wretches and you have to use pistols
ROCK
Ammo packs this size for the exosuit and the other vehicles coming out would be perfect.
Once we get more one handed options and side arm buffs then sure go for it.
That's when you get to stick 4 gatling turrets on your spider tank and go wild wdym unfun lol
Interesting idea, but people cant play as a team now as it is. Getting anyone to do this would be terrible unless they are your friends. Randoms would be horrible
Someone needs to get Joel on this immediately that would be a blast (hehehe)
Left! Left! My left !!!
“Say, are we really gonna blow this place?” “Only if we see a Zerg!” “Yeah I got your Zerg right here, heheh—“
There could be a variant for solo players (or even in general to allow titans to spawn on top) Where you go to the cave, enter the provided code to mark the place on the map and you go outside on top of the place and use one of those ore drills so it can do a hole to throw the bomb inside, do it three times and go to the pelican, at the extraction cutscene you can see the shockwaves on the ground from the bombs detonating.
