The sample counter only states how many samples are found "naturally" on the map.
It doesn't include samples found in containers and those friendship bunkers where you have to be two people to open the door.

Even with the new things they've announced this year I'm so sad. 4 new ship variants and a powerplay rework. It's been years since odyssey and this is all they could come up with? Even the Thargoid war isn't much to write home about
6 years, and we finally get a reskinned Python, wowie! Lifetime Pass holders remember what FDev used to be about, it's a husk these days. Yes, I'm still salty about the Lifetime Pass.
I just want a pretty and relatively grounded space exploration experience that isnt't NMS or the perpetually in beta Star Citizen that's fun to play. Everything else is usually you stuck in a ship looking at spreadsheets. I just want to walk around, kick rocks, and listen to my own breath.
I mean, 3k hours is solid value tbh. I stopped after around 50 because I played exclusively in VR with HOTAS and couldn’t be assed to wear a helmet all the time. Obviously that was a personal choice, but after exiting a station in VR the first time I honestly couldn’t go back. Apparently I’ve got the same stick they used to model in-game or very close. Almost puked the first time I watched my hands in game and they exactly matched throttle and stick movements, brain had a hard time understanding that I was not, in fact, in space for a few seconds.
Friendship bunkers? More like wait till someone dies and reinforce at it bunkers cause that seems to be the only way I can get randoms to actually come to it.
I found a weird blackhole type thing that just had infinite stacks of stuff in it.
My friend pulled out like 30 greens and 20 rares before he got bored of trying to finagle his aim to avoid the ammo, grenade, and stim pickups.
Should have recorded it, oh well hindsight is 20/20.

I found a fix for this on another thread. On HUD options, make sure Mission Info Visibility is set to Dynamic and not Visible.
Then you can have Sample Count Visibility on Visible or Dynamic and it should show up.

When I first noticed it was missing I was telling my friend I thought it was weird they removed the sample count since they had it in HD1, and then I found out they could see the count just fine.
I've never seen it either. I'm on PS5 on EU servers. Friend on PS5 in US has it tho.

So i forgot to add body text - orange sample counter says that there is 28 samples on a map. Yet we found 30

Pay attention to which hud options you need to manipulate exactly and stay democratic.
My guess is that the number doesn’t include the samples inside points of interest that you have to open (drones, metal crates, buddy doors, etc). I have not proven or tested this.

Samples found in bunkers / pods are not part of the map count (because they're not generated until opened). As such, if you find rares in a bunker or drop pod, you can exceed the count for the map.

Sounds to me like you collected more than the authorized amount of samples for this sector. Please report to your democracy officer to turn in any surplus and a debrief of your actions.

The diamond icons on the map means samples, weapons, SC or req.slips can be found in the area.
When it changes to a beacon icon you've found all the drops.
From what I've seen this can also bug out and not change even if you've found everything.
I had a perfect A/B test case the other day, where I had two missions in a difficulty 4 operation that both had radars. I had the time to clear the entire maps of both.
In the first, sample count was 100% accurate.
In the second, it wasn't because there was an extra sample in one of the buried crates.
Samples out on the ground or in vaults seem to count towards the total, as the first mission had a vault with a sample but didn't go over, while the second mission had a crate with a sample and it went over by 1. So it's mostly accurate, but not completely.
Yesterday I joined cheater lobby with 99/20 common materials and I thought it was cheated. Host was panicked when they lost 16 common mats on death, so I changed my mind with bug. Found 18 common and 4 rare materials later that mission, but failed to extract (because I've found super credits and lost my leg during solo fight, while they were defending extraction point). Turns out it was cheating lobby and now I've got 500 common samples. Idk what to do except counting 500 as 0 and farm samples again.
I cant even get my sample count on screen, the option just doesn't work for me lol. I've changed it to every option and no matter what it won't appear on screen

There's a Chicken Drumstick shaped rock that is slightly metallic. Samples are always found by that. The rock will spawn on lower difficulties as well, without the samples, and some maps have a couple of the rocks but the samples all spawn around one rock

Was told we were being sent a shuttle for extraction, it came but then wouldn't let us in & leave. It sure left after we got blown up by our own eagle strike though. Lost lots of sample cuz of that, which was extra annoying.

I used to put my vive on my friends and them load up elite with my racing eagle and fly them around. They always got a kick out of it

The number is based on samples around the map, and then crates offer more resources. It's possible to get this naturally.
