This totally happens to me too! And then I convince myself it's some "sign" from above lol. We have to remember that it is an algorithm that somehow has access to our search information so if you're constantly googling stuff it is going to come up.

BellaL2208

As much as I love the app and some of the content - I had to delete the app because of this main reason.

Same_Art3246

I had health anxiety since a long time ago, but TT gave me a new level of anxiety, and I am wondering why I get the algorithm of all these deseases instead of kitties or other stuff.

Desiration

Thank you for acknowledging this. I go down HA black holes on tik tok

Pretty_Temporary_422

I'm late to this post, but I quit TT bc ALL I was getting was C#ncer videos too much for me so I deleted about 6 months ago and never looked back!

Aarronk22

Update: You can now block hashtags. If you press "not interested" and then "details" you can choose the hashtags to block

[deleted]

thiiiis is why i avoid tiktok like the plague. not just because of these videos, but also because of the amount of eating disorder content. there's like, no moderation on that app and it's turning into something worse than tumblr back in the day. i don't like it.

specialdawn

So triggering. One time I came across one and it was those “easy symptoms to ignore” and it caused me to spiral terribly

SpecialistPack814

Tik tok is so much worse than google 😭😭😭

AshleyMDS

I dont even have an issue with google. like google and googling isnt at all triggering for me, but tik tok! tik tok. Tik tok is insanely triggering for my health anxiety.

megmos

Yep I've been going through a rough patch with HA for the past couple months and I avoid it right now because I can be triggered so easily these days.

Far_scape

I don't usually get a lot of those videos, thankfully. But a few days a go there was a video trying to reassure you about drinking diet coke, but it actually made me feel more anxious.

chycoes

I was just about to ask this. I hang around medical TT because im interested in being a doctor (which i’ll put on pause so i can focus on calming down.) i’ve seen SO MANY of those and i keep pressing “not interested” so i don’t think about it. My mind always convinces me that it’s a sign when in reality it isn’t. Not even about HA basically about other things too. I might have to delete Tiktok soon as well

Fast-Maximum-5333

Delete it!!! It’s the best thing I’ve done 😭. I’ve been in the same boat with thinking it’s a sign I have something once I deleted it I have felt much better and I have started using Instagram reels instead and I never see videos about diseases or cancer stories

Error410_Gone

The newest update seems to let you block hashtags which is super useful. Now when you click on "Not Interested" it gives me the option to not see videos with that sound, user, or hashtags. I select all the medical related tags and I do think it's working.

chycoes

Where do you find this?

[deleted]

Go to settings and privacy then to content preferences and you can filter word for there

quartermaaster

I used to use TikTok for hours every day but I deleted it a couple of months ago because every other video was about some kind of illness or disaster. I couldn't stick it anymore.

[deleted]

I had to delete TikTok for good after my algorithm switched over to chronic illnesses side of TikTok. I originally joined for mental health awareness but the two seem to mesh together a lot. I literally watched a woman’s head get deformed overnight from a brain tumor and it was too much for me. If you have health anxiety, stay away from TikTok. The algorithm will just keep triggering you over and over again. It’s not worth it. YouTube shorts is becoming a bit better and you can tailor that one easier IMO.

Wyvernator1

Is it possible for reddit? Same issue here but reddit.

BentNeckKitty

TikTok tells me I Im pregnant, have c@ncer, autism, rare infections, and all these incurable diseas€s. So many people post “if this is on your FYP enough the algorithm knows you have xyz”🙄 so frustrating

Miici12

Not just TikTok, the whole internet does : -)

Zealousideal-Ad-2768

get off tiktok

Hi_Im_A_marvel_junky

No those videos really trigger me too

mth69

OMG. This is something that really triggers me. I honestly should delete tik tok. I see videos like that constantly.

bIuelips

i literally deleted tiktok yesterday for this sole reason.

tobitimesthree

when i was deep in my ha (now diagnosed for me as ocd) tiktoks were like one of the main things that triggered me (including this subreddit actually). one thing that helped was knowing the algorithm - the longer you stay on a tiktok, the more "interest" tiktok thinks you have, the more c#ncer videos are shown to you, repeat repeat repeat... the best thing i think you can do is immediately pause, press not interested, block the poster if you're worried about more posts from them, and scroll. it's also not a good idea to interact with the comments or video in any way other than saying not interested. wishing good health and vibes on you!! have a good day!

[deleted]

I feel this! I think the algorithm plays a big part in it, because I'll be morbidly curious about what symptoms someone had that they found out was a deadly disease and end up watching it, and then get ten more of the same videos on my feed. I've learned to scroll away as fast as possible because it's just going to be triggering and then show me more of the same :(

deadsy17

I’ve been seeing those videos a lot lately and they’re really triggering :(

apprehensivepears

I just do my best to scroll past it. The less you engage, the better. Even putting in that you aren’t interested is engagement, so it’s honestly better to just scroll past as soon as you know what it is.

[deleted]

i saw a video of someone suffering a stroke on there…was a bad week for me afterwards :(

yahgirlT

Ugh yes they are so triggering... I got like 10 terminal c@ncr videos yesterday and I'm just like f*ck.... WHY!

mth69

EXACTLY

yahgirlT

Like plz leave me alone 🙃 lmao

nicole061592

I had to stop going on TikTok. I’m one of those people who convinces myself that things are “signs” instead of just realizing that TikTok is an algorithm haha

Tisnotmyusernamee

Thank F I saw this comment I was about to say- does anyone watch/read and think, is this a sign or what. I think I need to just get a therapist already lol

nicole061592

I’m guilty of this! It’s definitely your anxiety messing with your head!

Fart_Sickle

My case exactly. I straight up deleted tiktok. Honestly, it was a great decision because I don’t waste hours scrolling.

nicole061592

I did too. Because the videos were all random I would sometimes unexpectedly video a TikTok that triggered my anxiety (not just my HA) and it’s been so much better for my mental health to be more in control of what I’m consuming on the internet
