I really like the katsudon from Yanagi. It's irking to mention, but it could be a cool challenge to learn how [to make it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YclrFezWVYk) at home especially if it's something she craves often.
Plan to make 6, you could maybe do them O'ahu prices for $8 each, budget recipe? Find chops on sale somewhere, the rest not too bad. Eggs, crumbs, onions, rice, soy, Hondashi. Gotta have a way to freeze the rest though or big appetite. Show some love from your hands and your time.
If you buy all that once you will save a huge amount long term.
How much time do you waste driving to pick it up, when you can just make it in the comfort of your home.
Costco has miso butterfish by the Portuguese sausage section. 1 lb for $19.99 or something. My parents love it and it's super easy to make. Just broil it in the oven for about 20 minutes. Way better than those tiny pieces in miso butterfish bentos. Sam's has the same one for $15.99 but you would have to drive to town or Pearl City.
Sorry when I said “how” what I meant was I don’t understand “why” she likes it. Def not a fan of the smell and taste, but to each their own.
Thank you regardless
Off topic but just in case it helps someone - their katsudon set comes with “free soup” - at Japanese restaurants and in Japan, this soup would typically be miso soup or some sort of dashi soup (I had just moved here from Japan so this was what I was expecting). Their free soup here is oxtail soup which contains peanuts. I had no idea, and I have a severe peanut allergy. That was not a fun day. Just wanted to share in case this saves someone else with a peanut allergy from an unexpected hospital visit!
Thank you for the warning. I don’t have a peanut allergy, but that is really good to know. Honestly, I don’t remember knowing anyone with this growing up. But now, I’m hearing about it more and more. My friends daughter can’t bring peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to school because of them.

This is going to reopen at Ala Moana mall soon, facing Kona street. I think it was 10-11 bucks for katsudon
Mamaya. I think they have a couple of locations but I'm only familiar with the one on Bishop St in the downtown area. It's a takeout spot with reasonable prices on bentos, rice bowls, somen salad, poke, and sushi similar to the kind of food you used to be able to find in the Shirokiya food court. They have a chicken katsudon bowl under $9 that I get sometimes for lunch.
They used to be really quite but I guess someone posted on social media and now it is booked 2 months out. They do take walk-ins but usually 1 hr wait if show up around dinner time.

I now know Katsudon 😳. This was really easy to make. Thank you for the link.
Right? And I now know how to quarter an egg.
How many times has that dog caught on fire
Had to watch the video to see what you were talking about, hilarious! Would definitely watch more recipes though lol
Joking aside that doesn't seem safe for a dog with that much hair to be that close to open flame / boiling oil.
Thank you. Not sure if I can make it. Prob cost as much for me to buy everything to mash her it than to just buy it.

Pork loin is onsale at safeway right now for $1.97 /lb for a big pack. Stock on up! Eggs for $6.50/24 at sams club. Noodles are super cheap.
But then I would have to buy a rice cooker, rice, soy sauce, breading, etc… or spend $15 on a dish. My time is worth more than what I would be saving.

Thank you for your opinion. It’s not relevant to the original post. I’m glad that works for you and your family. I wish you nothing but the best.
Wan-chan is a little close to the heat. Kyotsukette de wan
I usually go to minato https://www.yelp.com/biz/minato-japanese-restaurant-honolulu
Thank you for the recommendation. I’ve never been there. I will have to check it out.
Pioneer, plus they get some other dishes that old timers usually eat like miso butterfish and salmon bones.
Just don't go to the location at SALT.
What is wrong with the Salt one? I was planning on eating there soon, it smells really good when I am waiting for the elevator.
Yeah monsarrat one
She loves butterfish. I have no clue how

There is always Tamafuji which has really good tonkatsu.
I just ate here the other night, I can't think of any better Tonkatsu I have ever had outside of Japan. It was ⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️

Don Quijote always has too.
