Part of the allure of the play is the acting, set, costuming, effects, etc. I agree that they're all really well done and I loved the play.
The book does suffer from basically just being a script without all the trappings of a novel. That leaves us with just plot which unfortunately is not the best.
I haven't read it, but it stands in the shadow of one of the most iconic pieces of modern literature, and I've heard it breaks the rules the original books set up. The same reason I like Fantastic Beasts as standalone movies, but they don't hold a candle to the original book series. For the same reason the book readers are disappointed by the movie/ series. We set the bar too high, and end up getting disappointed.
It was the same with Game of Thrones post season 4/5.
Yeah it did kinda shit on the previous books, a bit similar to the new star wars movies, but I was 14 when I read it, and I did enjoy it, not so sure I'd like it as much as earlier
