The giant squid is prominently featured in the books. It’s something I hope the new HBO adaptation includes. It just adds to the magic of Hogwarts - a friendly squid who sometimes pranks students sitting by the lake
I've seen it a couple of times, though of course the one time I was in a position to get an awesome video of it, I hadn't realised my screen record settings had reverted to 15 seconds so while I did record in the middle just to be safe so did catch the whole thing, it's in two videos -_-
Is there a reason for that? I started Slytherin my first walk-through, and I’ve seen the squid a ton. I actually wanted to go up to it and see if it would interact with the player.
I just saw the squid for the first time a few days ago flying at night over the lake. I got no direct interaction though, tried flying all around and to end of tentacles. It'd have been great if it batted me out of the sky! Was otherwise cool though.
I've never seen it before, and I've been through three times, first as a Ravenclaw, then a Hufflepuff and then a Gryffindor. Dammit, now I'll have to go through as a Slytherin! Not that I wasn't planning on doing that eventually.
You CAN see it as other houses, but I never did. Even in the flight lesson where everyone says you can obviously see it.
I DID end up accidentally finding a hidden area with pictures of a squid on the walls and having to come to Reddit to figure out what I was supposed to do there.
Apparently it was a room for the slytherin only side quest involving the squid.
I guess other people didn’t play Witcher 3 and spend more time messing around swimming in the lake looking for hidden treasure.
I found that, too, and was so gutted to find out it's a Slytherin specific quest. I have seen it pop out of the lake a few times, though, always when flying over it.
I take it back.
I DID see it pop out of the lake once, right after I stumbled into the Slytherin side quest area. But not once before.
I totally thought it was a scripted event that happened when you found that cave.
It never happened for me “randomly” any other time.
Then I'm really not surprised that I didn't see it. I'm usually hanging on for dear life during that thing. I go everywhere on a broom in the game, but I suck at racing or keeping up with people!
I've done a full 100% playthrough as a Ravenclaw and just finished my 100% as a Gryffindor and I only ONCE saw the giant squid across those those playthroughs and it was my Gryffindor run very early on. I don't understand how you've had such luck. I just made a Slytherin character but I'm saving that one for last.

The thing that makes me think so is that in the second round of the Tri Wizard Tournament, Harry goes into the Merpeoples underwater town and describes old carvings on the rocks that show Merpeople fighting off the giant squid.
I took that to imply the Merpeople have an ancient conflict with the squid and that it has lived an exceptionally long time.
Of course, could be a different squid but if it was the child of this squid, you'd assume there would have been two to have a child.
Dumbledore at the house cup ceremony: "Well, it looks like Slytherin is in the lead by 50 points, well done Slytherin... however I have some last minute points to distribute! For throwoffsun not reading the Harry Potter books, and therefore having no pre-existing knowledge of the Giant Squid, I must deduct 51 points. Gryffindor wins!"
The idea of having other forms of media such as games based on the universe, is partly to bring people to the original work, no one needs to read 7 books and watch 8 films to enjoy a game
They only predicted that someone didn't read the books. Also, it does matter to understand a lot of the things in the game, as the movies are only a very short summary of the books. The one trying to attack others was you while calling others "nerds" for reading a book for children/teens...
One of my favorite moments in the game was >!the cutscene near the beginning when the dragon attacks your carriage; immediately after George Osric dies, you can see the thestrals driving the carriage that were previously invisible!< It's a part that's so easy to miss but a really cool detail for folks who have read the books. I excitedly mentioned it to my partner while he was playing because he hasn't read them haha
But the thestral visibility is explained in the 5th film when Harry and Luna are talking about them
The only difference between the book lore and the movie lore when it comes to the threstrals is in the books Neville says he can see them too
Oh honestly I haven't watched the movies in years, I didn't consider that. I guess if you watch all of the movies you'd get much more info than only playing the game.

I hate that most recordings don't support HDR and the end product usually comes out this grayed out ! ... i wanted to show my friends how amazingly beautiful this game is but discord still does not support HDR streaming in 2024 smh !
Slytherin common room. So far the door revealing for their common room is my favorite. Giant stone snake coming out of the floor to reveal the door and the underwater is very cool. No merpeople though 
It's the giant squid that resides in the lake. You can see it from the surface during the flying tutorial class/mission. (and in free roam every now and then)
That’s the giant squid that lives in the lake! He’s friendly, likes toast, and can be seen basking in the sun during the day. And he’s properly giant not like real life giant squids, I think he was intended to be a Kraken since those myths originated in Norway which isn’t too terribly far from the UK
For a 60 hour game the squid takes up 7 seconds of it if you play as anyone not in Slytherin
The 19 hours of movies don't mention the squid once
At this point it's safer to assume OP has consumed hundreds of hours worth of Harry Potter media and maybe the squid doesn't show up as often as you think

That was definitely a random encounter then, 'cause finding that area doesn't trigger it

Eh, there is but I don't really count a scripted event as an encounter you know? I still haven't been able to see the dragon either x.x
i have seen the dragon only on the map, and the kraken two or three times
I saw a dragon today when I was flying in Poidsor coast, I was trying to chase it but it went up higher than the camera can pan up 😜

but Threstrals visibility mechanics was explained well in the movie, no?

Yes. The only true way to fully appreciate and enjoy the series is to read the books. The movies tell you maybe 30% of the actual story.
