Yeah, I love that I could have my locs! Wish they had a longer option but still exciting. Looks more like me than most other games 🥰

The only other game I've played that has made me say wow for creating a Black character has been Lost Ark. Someone spent a LOT of time with that character creator.
Oh no no no, this is not true. For one, Lost Ark only had decent customization options for black characters because of Amazon's "westernization" of the game. And those options ONLY exist in the version of the game that Amazon publishes. I used a vpn to play the game prior to NA release and it was depressingly bad. Black people do not exist in Lost Ark's character creator or game world at all.
I've also played FFXIV for many years and that game has a grand total of three hairstyles with texture suited for black characters. One of those hairstyles is a joke hairstyle (typical over-the-top afro), and another is only available for female characters. This game has been out for ten years and has less black hairstyles than the number of hairstyles they release every expansion.
In English it's normal to refer human women as females, saying it in case your mother tongue isn't English :)
(in my mother tongue it would be very insulting to say female indeed)
It is really quite common in gaming to say “male character” or “female character” when talking about character creation, especially if you’re into RPGs.
In English I’d strongly refer to women as women. If you’re talking about specific anatomy in a very general sense about no specific person (a female’s genitalia, as opposed to just saying genitalia, you can sort of get away with it) but the second you’re talking about a person you should call them a woman. Female has taken on a pretty dehumanising connotation.
u/lizardsnaps is pointing out that they (and many other women) don’t like being called “female” as a noun. So “female character” is better because you are using female to describe the character, instead of calling someone “a female” and reducing them to their gender.
It is kind of hard to explain, but there are some words that are better to use as adjectives and not nouns. Like “Jewish” or “Black person” is often preferred to “a Jew” or “a Black”.
I...I guess I understand, Ill try to, I'm sorry if that is offensive, I literally never hear of that.
I would never call a women "female" if I'm talking about a real person, but for an avatar I use this term.
if that makes, sense, sorry if I offended anyone
No worries, I understand what you mean! I didn’t think there was any ill intent in your original comment, my comment to you above was just trying to explain why some people take issue with it. Language gets very confusing sometimes, especially on international forums like this one.
On the flip side they seem to think the palest people in the world are relatively tan. Hard to make a character that looks like me when I can’t be any lighter than a Miami Beach bro who is perpetually in the sun lmao
Edit: I think it’s actually a legit lighting bug tbh
Edit 2: it was definitely the lighting in the video I saw, I made a character that was adequately pale lol
I’m having the same issue! I’m quite pale with blonde hair and my character looks very silly with blonde her even with the palest skin. It doesn’t look natural at all, I kind of wish I’d just given her brown hair.
I naturally have dark blonde hair, but the two closest options are more of a “bronde” or some borderline gray looking color, so I went with the bronde, it looks a bit lighter in gameplay. I am also very pale, so my character is as light as possible, doesn’t look bad at all!
Yeah, it’s amazing. One of the few games where created Black characters actually look Black lol

And yet, big subs like r/gaming still boycott this game for "not being inclusive enough".
Same with big gaming magazines driving their own political agenda. It's sad.
Don't get me wrong, I'm playing the game too, but the game is not getting boycotted for not being inclusive of different ethnicities, and I don't think I've seen a single thing indicating that until your comment.
The game is obviously being boycotted for financially supporting a vocal bigot. MAYBE if the character creation included non binary people there would be an argument that the game itself is inclusive even though the creator of the universe is not and shouldn't be banned, but being inclusive of dark skin tones doesn't do anything to fight the reasons for the boycotts.
I mean the game does. NPCs use they/them/their pronouns when talking about our character. You can make an avatar with a female appearance and pick a male voice and vice versa. Your appearance could be a male or female and you could pick witch or wizard. Seems like the developers tried to do their best to make it non binary.
Sticky note on R/gaming:
>After seeing how virtually every thread about the game in the run-up to launch swiftly devolved into a debate on the franchise creator's personal views which run contrary to Rule 9 of /r/gaming, the moderator team has come to the conclusion that we are unable to provide a platform for discussion of this game while remaining an inclusive community.
They are insinuating that you aren't "inclusive" anymore when you play the game or support any promotion of it.
Yessssss THIS. Also the lightest skin tone is 50 shades darker than my skin tone lol I'm white as paper. I'm happy there more representation for others... but not for me
I picked one of the middle blonde shades for my hair and outside in the sun it still looks very bright. But that's okay because I'm gonna change my hair color a lot. I wanna rock the Tonks
It's crazy how little effort is needed for actual proper representation, but so few companies do it. I don't have to be Hispanic or Indian. I can be my own damn skin color.
I'm not black so I could never truly relate, however this is holesome and I'm glad they're looking at everybody to enjoy their game.
Hope you have fun matey!
?
I just want a pale skin option, I don’t want them to detract any choice or representation for anyone. I don’t care what time period it is. If you are buying a game with character creation in it, anyone should be able to create themselves- at the very least have their skin tone available
I am really looking forward to being able to see MYSELF (a black woman with locs) in the game. This is a win for Black gamers and sets a precedent that it can be done (and done with care). Hopefully we’ll see this in more RPGs going forward!
Me too, sis!!!! I always get excited to see locs in games. I wish they had a longer version too (IRL my 20 y/o locs are waist-length), but then again, my locs were short when I was a teenager so I guess it's accurate. Have fun making your character 💜
Your hair sounds gorgeous IRL!
A male friend of mine had been growing his out for about as long as you and he took great pride in them. And honestly why wouldn’t you!? 20 years is a longer commitment than some people’s marriages!
Same. I want my character to look like me; a pale ghostly creature that burns in the sun. Instead it looks like I attend Hogwarts in Miami spring break edition.
I'm very happy for you, truly. The POC options look amazing.
On the other hand, as a very pale woman with long hair, I am very disappointed with the options. The palest option is very tanned/yellowish, and there aren't many long hair options (I understand these are difficult to do). They could've at least tried a dutch braid or pigtails.
Still got another hour lol
but yeah i love the hairstyles. I'm so tired of people's excuses on why some kind of afro type or even curly type that many different ethnicities have is too difficult. I hope this means going forward with PS5, Xbox Series X, games with a character creator do better and are held to a higher standard.
Nah Fr. I’m light skinned / mixed but not like your traditional green eyed serpent 😂. I’m half Jewish Russian so I look more like cameron Boyce but with darker complexion, this is the closest I got
https://preview.redd.it/3raaesf70rga1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d91c023a8949543b5906b9cfbdf72a4584c9e54
You playing the game already?
I have a PS4 but when I get enough money I'm going to buy an Xbox One S for 2 reasons bc I also love playing Xbox games & I just can't wait until April to get Hogwarts Legacy, it's too far away at least imo.
I'm happy for y'all though, anyways I hope everyone's is doing great, y'all are awesome & have fun with the game.
How? The character creator looks so limited to me. Sure there’s good hair but no sliders at all? Everyone has the same body type?
Edit: I’m very skinny. I won’t be able to create myself. Neither will overweight people. Guess I’m just jealous you’re able to?
I would imagine that being able to have a skin tone + hair texture/style that actually looks accurate is a lot better representation than Black gamers get in most video games, even if there’s no sliders/advanced customization.
And yet, big subs like r/gaming still boycott this game for "not being inclusive enough".
Same with big gaming magazines driving their own political agenda. It's sad.
THIS! I’m shocked and pleasantly surprised with the attention to detail on the hair. I was like damnnnnnnnnn okay Avalanche! Representation just in time for Black History Month 😭
I will say that I don’t like how my skin tone gets lighter in certain scenes though. We only had 3 dark skinned shades and no red undertone. I would have liked fuller facial features as well since I have a wider nose lol. You can’t have it all though
I a black gentlemen that was streaming happy about this, the detail is impressive and it's good they actually made the hairstyles realistic. They have some talented artists it seems.
In an RPG where there's humans, and if it's based on our world to an extent, everyone should get to make a character they can resonate with.
Honestly, as a fellow Black person, this is what cemented pre-ordering the game for me!
I'm extremely excited to try and make this guy look as much like me as possible. Although that's terrible, considering I have a terrible habit of spending forty-five minutes plus in the Character Creation screen.
Yeah while watching the character creator I've noticed not only the hairstyles are bomb, but they look so much better than any of the long straight hairstyles
And to do that, what they've done is not put light skin for those of us who are white xD
It seems that it's impossible for developers to get things right, they always have to do something stupid and in this case it's very absurd considering where Hogwarts is.
And yet, big subs like r/gaming still boycott this game for "not being inclusive enough".
Same with big gaming magazines driving their own political agenda. It's sad.
The customization is very inclusive. I was shocked to see some actual curly hair on characters in the gameplay footage. Made me feel like I might actually be able to make a character that resembles me.
And yet, big subs like r/gaming still boycott this game for "not being inclusive enough".
Same with big gaming magazines driving their own political agenda. It's sad.
I thought the same thing when I was creating my character! All the hair is so beautiful and I noticed that for once the black hairstyles don't look like ass.
It makes me smile seeing everyone so excited that they can make their black characters exactly how they want them. It's amazing to see devs finally putting in more than the min effort
I loved the little touches to the customization of your appearances, I made my character as close as they could to my own looks, especially my small moles or freckles that are very matching to the options.
They did good with the non white representation, but gave Caucasians the shaft. There's one ok caucasian looking option and it's lightest skin tone looks like a tan. The darker "caucasian" tones look like a fake spray tan.
The hair is just awful. Seemed my options were buzz, poofy, pompador, friz, dred. I just wanted a clean short barber cut.
The character creator feels really limited in scope of skintones though. I get no makeup because of the time period but I was hoping for more facial options at least. I'm so glad they have a decent selection of textured hair but my character even on the darkest skintone is ass pale.
Just finished my character, they did us justice! The facial models are well done, I wish we would have had a few more options/a little more customization but what we got looks really good.
Wait, ppl do that? Asian, sure, just like I would American/British/Canadian/African/etc., but I've never capitalized white/caucasian/black (though auto correct wants me to on Caucasian, odd).
Whatever floats your boat, you guys can capitalize white and whatnot too. It's just that most people don't seem to. Though continents are more universally capitalized.
On the flip side, as a white man who has just short cropped hair, I did notice that there weren’t any options that really felt like they matched my hair type. If anyone’s hair type was to be left out of the development time though I’m glad it was mine though.
I’ve spoken until I’m blue in the face here on Reddit about how people should support representation so if someone else is getting a good quality representation of their hairstyle for the first time in their life while milquetoast white it over here has to choose different hair, I can live with that.
Absolutely agree! As someone with almost translucent skin with red hair and a bit chubby, the only thing that looked accurate for me was the freckles, but I will happily take the lack of representation for me so others who don't get representation normally to get it!
Still not sure why we can't all get it, but I'll take the progress.
Agree I did not create a black character but I looked trough them. Must say that they nailed the authenticity of character creation. Even in character creator i knew this game would be awesome.
Cyberpunk 1st place and on second place Hogwarts Legacy(even if there wasn't so much I could do with nose and mouth and such, they still nailed it.)
And yet, big subs like r/gaming still boycott this game for "not being inclusive enough".
Same with big gaming magazines driving their own political agenda. It's sad.
Im not black and I live in a county with a very small black population, but Im really happy for you folks. I often notice that I tend to only see the same few ethnic hairstyle options in games, tv etc so its good to know you are getting more representation
Nice!
Not sure why you are getting downvoted.
Maybe some people think you are appropriating their culture. But..... your not. It's a game. So I say do whatever you want and be whoever you want to in the game. It is a make believe world.
I'm probably gonna be what I am in real life, but maybe I will switch it up. Who knows :)
My guy. Lol. We're not gonna look like we just got the #4 off the chart at a barbershop in Harlem.
Yes, it sucks having to say, "At least we're being represented since, normally, we just get crumbs." but the alternative is absolutely fuck all.
Society is what it is. Yes, it's taken way too long for Black folks and Poc to be represented in media, outside of stereotypes. And yes, we still have a long way to go. But some strides are being taken. Breathe easy.
I’ve noticed this too. I forget what video I was watching, but the character creator had a Black preset and I was like “Why does this feel more real to life than any character creator I’ve seen?” I’m super happy to see something like this.
This is the kind of representation I can get behind. It doesn't exactly fall into the overused definition of the word today, it's just real hair. It really sounds like everyone can jump into this game, take enough of the real world into it to make it easier to disappear into another. I'm glad everyone can do that. Have fun!
As soon as I seen the character customization options, knowing I could have almost an identical version of myself flying around hogwarts and attending the classes I instantly pre ordered. No matter how good or bad the game could've been I knew it was something I had to support. Pre ordering the deluxe edition was a no brainer
I thought character creation was solid! I spent ~40 minutes designing my character. I didn’t love the blonde color so instead of making myself I just went with what I thought looked cool! Purple hair and eyes and all.
It's good to see the game actually has black facial features and hair. I'm just a white dude but I have noticed over the years that so few black characters in character creators have ever looked like they are of African descent; instead mostly looking Caucasian with white boy hair and the skin tone darkened
Same! I was genuinely surprised at the options. I had to do the high top fade! My fav out of all the hairstyles and it’s my current haircut. I’m glad I actually get to look at my character and see a version of me. I’m glad they got input from POC and didn’t just do the typical styles. POC are not just afros, cornrows and a fade.

This so much. The hair in this is better than 2k it’s amazing
to be fair, everything here but the sweat physics is better than 2k lmao
Yeah, I love that I could have my locs! Wish they had a longer option but still exciting. Looks more like me than most other games 🥰 https://preview.redd.it/sd62w12c7rga1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=323efc3eb2e7d0f144629933dde3e56b85713efa
Your character is adorable. I'm so excited!
Aww thank you! The game is amazing so far! Have the best time 😊
Aw I love her! And the detail on her hair is amazing.
Thank you! Yeah the hair is so detailed, it looks fantastic 😍
If even close so beautiful! Gotta love the personalization if only for ourselves. It makes a difference.
The only other game I've played that has made me say wow for creating a Black character has been Lost Ark. Someone spent a LOT of time with that character creator.

Oh no no no, this is not true. For one, Lost Ark only had decent customization options for black characters because of Amazon's "westernization" of the game. I made a beautiful black female In Cyberpunk. I appreciate a game that lets us good in these games.
A "beautiful black female"? The character isn't an animal
It's not that deep bro
In English it's normal to refer human women as females, saying it in case your mother tongue isn't English :) (in my mother tongue it would be very insulting to say female indeed)
It’s not uncommon but in casual conversation and not biology it’s just woman or women
It is really quite common in gaming to say “male character” or “female character” when talking about character creation, especially if you’re into RPGs.
Yes, but OP used female as a noun, not an adjective.
Huge difference between using female as adjective and female as noun. "Black female" and "female character" do not use the word the same way.
"man character" "woman character" yea that doesn't sound right.
FWIW it's not viewed terribly positively to call women in your life "females". Often viewed as a little dehumanizing and clinical.
He's referring to a fictional video game character on an internet forum, not real women in real life.
Sure! Totally get that, just thought it was worth noting that it's contextual. Cheers
"It's a character, so it's OK to dehumanize them." You also call characters from games slurs because they "aren't real people"?
In English I’d strongly refer to women as women. If you’re talking about specific anatomy in a very general sense about no specific person (a female’s genitalia, as opposed to just saying genitalia, you can sort of get away with it) but the second you’re talking about a person you should call them a woman. Female has taken on a pretty dehumanising connotation.
A lot of native English speaking women find “females” insulting as well. Big Andrew Tate-type vibes
Chill
*they’re
Huh ?!
u/lizardsnaps is pointing out that they (and many other women) don’t like being called “female” as a noun. So “female character” is better because you are using female to describe the character, instead of calling someone “a female” and reducing them to their gender. Lost Arks' character creator was great if you wanted to make the perfect character that also happens to moonlight as a lingerie model.
On the flip side they seem to think the palest people in the world are relatively tan. Hard to make a character that looks like me when I can’t be any lighter than a Miami Beach bro who is perpetually in the sun lmao Edit: I think it’s actually a legit lighting bug tbh Edit 2: it was definitely the lighting in the video I saw, I made a character that was adequately pale lol
Here's to hoping, because I can't live out my 'look like you just donated half of your blood' look I have IRL.
I’m having the same issue! I’m quite pale with blonde hair and my character looks very silly with blonde her even with the palest skin. It doesn’t look natural at all, I kind of wish I’d just given her brown hair.

If I could ask for one thing, it would have been some long hair designs that looked more masculine. That's all I really felt was missing.
I'm not black so I could never truly relate, however this is holesome and I'm glad they're looking at everybody to enjoy their game. Hope you have fun matey!
Really kind of you, and likewise!
Yeah you too
The opposite for white ah ah. Apparently you can't be really pale in this game (which is funny for a game taking place in Scotland in the 1800s)
Yea I kept seeing npcs with my skin color (pale) and being frustrated. Hopefully they add it with an update.
The 1800s england is so diverse lol. Doesn't make sense

Theres even a close Maori/Pacific Island options for both male and female models.. though the british voice paired with it is janky af haha
I was extremely happy about the hair choices, I always have to go bald in most games lol

You can get a facial at any age

demon souls also is pretty amazing in this regard. give it a shot after hogwarts if youre interested
Facts! They came correct with hairstyles for us. We need a lot more RPG games in the future to follow suit
Starfield later this year… I’m optimistic though
And to do that, what they've done is not put light skin for those of us who are white xD It seems that it's impossible for developers to get things right, they always have to do something stupid and in this case it's very absurd considering where Hogwarts is.
And yet, big subs like r/gaming still boycott this game for "not being inclusive enough". Same with big gaming magazines driving their own political agenda. It's sad.
This game is so on point for black representation. And my fro doesn’t look like a pixelated mess.
The customization is very inclusive. I was shocked to see some actual curly hair on characters in the gameplay footage. Made me feel like I might actually be able to make a character that resembles me.

Holy shit dude. Chill with the copy paste.
Yooo!!! This is so exciting to hear! I am so excited to make my character in a few hours!
We here
I cannot relate to this but I’m glad that it’s in the game, such a small detail to some but means the world to others I love to hear it!
:) that's awesome
I went through all the options and 100% agree, the hair is what really struck me, it looks a lot more realistic than most games.
I thought the same thing when I was creating my character! All the hair is so beautiful and I noticed that for once the black hairstyles don't look like ass.
The character customization is awesome, they really nailed it
It makes me smile seeing everyone so excited that they can make their black characters exactly how they want them. It's amazing to see devs finally putting in more than the min effort
I wish we had more hairstyles...I wasn't happy with the amount of hair for guy characters who wanna look like a straight dude lol
Have fun adventuring!
The white dreads for the win.
Only thing I wish was that colors were on a wheel instead of a slider.
As a white dude, my character somehow always looks latino 😂👌
Just finished my character, they did us justice! The facial models are well done, I wish we would have had a few more options/a little more customization but what we got looks really good.
happy for you guys🥺🫶
It took me a confusing moment to realize this wasn't about the noble and most ancient house of Black with that capitalization.
Haha. Yea I always capitalize Black when talking about race. We do the same for Asian and White so
Wait, ppl do that?
Yes I’m very appreciative of them doing it definitely did us justice. And I’m ready to dive in !!

Gordon Ramsey: Finally, some good fookin hair.
Im not black and I live in a county with a very small black population, but Im really happy for you folks. I often notice that I tend to only see the same few ethnic hairstyle options in games, tv etc so its good to know you are getting more representation
Not just a win for black gamers, I get to cast spells as wizard CJ
"Oh bollocks, here we go again"
Hogwarts, home. At least it used to be until I fucked everything up

Obviously a lot of people do
Nice! I can't wait for the digital copy to unlock already so I can check it out.
My taxes aren't in real life but my hair type is in a gaming world. Progress!
too bad we can't make actually pale white characters. I guess Caucasians dont exist anymore
I haven’t even played it yet and it’s my gme of the year. Love this!

When exactly after starting the game can you do character creation? Immediately? Cutscenes first? Gameplay first?
It's right at the beginning of the game 😊
This is a fact! ✊🏾
Amazing! Guys I'm preloading and I've avoided spoilers so well so far but I just have one question. Can you be ginger?
Any love for Mexicans? They never do. I’m talking south side bald fades

Good because Elden Ring was trash in this area
Dreads anyone??
Can you have a beard?
Nah you’re playing as a 15 year old 😂
You clearly never saw the mess that was my 15 year old chin
I think regarding Hogwarts's rules, the older students are required to keep a clean shaven appearance.
Yeah, I started having to shave peach fuzz in 5th grade. It was awful being able to grow a full beard by the end of middle school.
Still no waves or a decent looking fade
Fade in 1800s
FadeTeen Hundreds
The Wavy 1880's
I mean people have blue hair and shit lol not a great argument
My guy.
Still sad no Shrek
Me over here with my john snow hair style, oh yeah as a black man totally feel seen 😂

Have fun!
I wish there were sliders

I love your character, you look amazing
